On the Grid : Tom Dixon's Water Tower

"This disused water tower has been renovated by Tom Dixon along with Peter Harris from studio SUSD, extending the circular structure in order to celebrate its brutalist form. It was built in the 1930s and used to store 5000 gallons of water in case a nearby gas structure caught fire. The tower now has three floors of living space connected by spiral stairs and offering views of Portobello, Trellick Tower and Kensal Green cemetery. The project was intended as a design exercise and has previously been listed on airbnb." - Effection

Tom Dixon shop, an undiscovered treasure near where I live. Really nice place to browse for all sorts of good bits and pieces. Some really trendy furniture with some excellent designs. Even better after a good look around, and yes you will end up buying something some really good food to eat in the restaurant. Visit and enjoy, you will!!

I went here by chance for an Etsy workshop and was really impressed with the shop, cafe and restaurant. We ate in the cafe downstairs, which was lovely. Surrounded by Tom Dixon's designs, you can sit and watch as all the quiches, cakes and various other delicious dishes are produced from the oven in the open kitchen. The restaurant upstairs is again designed really beautifully and looked well worth a visit although obviously pricier than the cafe. It had a very nice atmosphere and the menu looked excellent. The shop is great too and has a nice range of items.

Beautiful and style furniture and decorations. I ordered a wonderful table and dining chair set. We were very excited about receiving them. I was able to log into the website to get status of the order the first time. Then, after several days of no status, not even a delivery estimate, I emailed and called them. I kept trying to log into the website but it said that the password was wrong or my account has been disabled. I try to reset the password, but no email to reset it would be received. I actually called them 3 times so far separated between several days. I talked to them and they all said they will call me back. I have never received a call back. I have also never received an email response to any of my queries or concerns, particularly about delivery status, expectation and website issues. I also received another invoice that requests for prepayment in cash... even though I have already paid for the furniture online. Tom Dixon's customer service is absolutely dismal. Aminata, and manager Emma Hamilton have no care about their customers. They are completely unprofessional and they all speak in a demeaning fashion. Not once have they verbally apologised for delays, inconveniences or the stress that I, the customer, have experienced. This is one of the worst customer experience I have ever had. I love the art and designs, but Tom Dixon's customer service needs to be up to par with its reputation and style. Update 10 April 2018: I spoke with Ollie in the morning and promised to call me back. He called me at 445pm, near close of business. I'm glad he didn't forget about me. He provided the info I needed to gain confidence that the process is moving forward. We will see if I will receive the phone call from the delivery people in a couple of days.. Update 11 April 2018: Was contacted via email to coordinate delivery date. I'm happy that it is moving forward. Update 13 April 2018: I received an email of apology and promise to fix their customer service to ensure what happens to me doesn't happen again. It feels that they were very authentic with their attempt to fix it. Apparently, they have a new head of customer service, so that's a good move forward. I received my new furniture on time. They were courteous since they gave me a specific ETA when i asked on the day of delivery. They arrived on time. The delivery people delivered the furniture in boxes, assembled them, placed them where we wanted them, cleaned up and departed once confirmed everything was satisfactory. I increase the rating from a one star since Tom Dixon has initiated actions to fix their customer service problem. Update April 17, 2018. Received a second shipment of a candle and soap dispenser. This was much smoother than before as I received an immediate notification of it being sent to me. There was also a notification of when it will be expected, date and time. And the products arrived exactly as notified. This must be the way it should be, as expected from such a renown brand. Thank you Tom Dixon.

Yelp
My Tom Dixon allegiance comes from admiring and seeing his work for the first time in WSJ magazine. His design production runs the gamut from recycling metal cooking utensils into furniture to co-oping with German company, Trumph and their laser edge technology for his metal stamp lamp. His commendable small carbon footprint emphasizes design, production & distribution in one spot, a return to cottage industry. If you're lucky, you might be the recipient of one of his giveaways wherein the masses become caretakers of his cutting edge designs. I'm wishing, hoping, thinking, praying.

Yelp
No point going if you're actually hoping to buy something. I visited the shop to look at a bar stool I'd seen on the designer's website. When I couldn't find it, I asked the shop assistant, who informed me that the stool is not on display in the shop. Won't be in the future, either. And no, it's not on display anywhere else that carries Tom Dixon's items. If I wanted the (rather expensive) chair, I would have to take my chances and buy it online, sight unseen. I then enquired about a lamp that was on display. 'Oh,' says the assistant, 'this one's been discontinued.' But it's on display, with a price tag? 'Yes, but it's out of stock and won't be in stock again. No, you can't buy it.' So, to sum up: a showroom that doesn't stock items that are for sale, and doesn't sell the items it stocks. How very useful.
