Pepperoni Rolls Are a Classic Dish in the Rust Belt and Appalachia | Eater

"Recommended by Hal B. Klein of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tomaro’s is prized for its Italian bread — particularly good when it comes straight out of the oven — so get there early if you want a pepperoni roll for breakfast." - Danny Palumbo

Great place. LOVE their pepperoni rolls! The woman who helped us said she's been working there 36 years! She was really nice, apologized for the construction chaos when you exit the highway (even though none of that is in any way her fault).

Google
First time visiting as we were driving through the area. We are so glad that we stopped in. Unfamiliar with the bakery we were looking for some sweet breads. Unbeknownst to us they specialize in white breads and rolls. We ordered dinner rolls and two hot pepperoni rolls. The dinner rolls were very fresh and the pepperoni rolls were hot fresh and delicious!! Even though the bakery was extremely busy they were friendly, kind and patient. If you want awesome Italian bread/pepperoni rolls... this is the place to go!

Google
Such good Italian bread and pepperoni rolls! We've taken these to relatives all over the eastern US. The last time we were there the rolls were hot out of the oven and the best ever! Well worth the trip!

Google
Love love love the pepperoni bread! Staff is so friendly, met one of the new owners, and he was thrilled to talk to us. We stopped by because I remember eating Tomaro's when I visited my grandparents many years ago. The food tastes as good as I remember!

Have been coming into Clarksburg since 1998 and ALWAYS make it a point to visit Tomaro’s Bakery for their famous pepperoni rolls … simply Heaven! Now we’ve brought our grandkids to experience hot pepperoni rolls right out of the oven!

Google
Their pepperoni rolls ruin you for any other. We live out-of-state and plan our trips to visit family so that we can stop here.

I have been enjoying this bakery since I was a small child. There are no pepperoni rolls like these. Made fresh daily and you better get there early! My favorite part is they now ship! So even though I do not live there, I can still enjoy their fresh bread, rolls and of course their pepperoni rolls! It is family owned and ran for over 107 years. These people know their stuff. You won't be disappointed. I highly, highly recommend this establishment.

Yelp
Stopped in Clarksburg at a Bakery that started in 1914... I purchased through the window a package of Mini Pepperoni Rolls and a loaf of Soft Crust Italian Bread pre-sliced OMG made fresh this morning and if I could buy a candle with that scent....yummy

Yelp
Pepperoni rolls and more. Everyone has said the same old thing for years, IT'S GREAT ! Plus finding the place is easy too. Personally I like the minis. This size is a great snack for dipping. Can say the shipping if you wanted to, VERY expensive as it deterred me from that direction. Country Club bakery in Fairmont ships free...and they don't jack up the price for a dozen to do this. However the Tomaros is the great food. Well worth the stop off of I-79.

Yelp
Best pepperoni roll ever. Large selection of other breads and baked items. Always a line, but definitely worth the wait.

Yelp
This Italian bakery has only one rival in the town of Clarksburg WV. It can always be counted on to provide quality products to more than satisfy the consumer's palate!

Surya J.

Yelp
It is a small store in the Italian neighborhood of Clarksburg. I drove from Morgantown in an hour to taste their famous pepperoni breads. It was a wonderful and delicious experience. I liked the taste when they came right off the over and the bread was warm with the Pepperoni sticks. It was also a different but good taste when the bread was sitting for a few hours. They close early on Sundays. Quite a few people were coming for the bread.

Yelp
5 stars. What does that mean when you see it from me? It means "this place is worth going out of your way or making a special trip for because the quality of the product or service warrants it." And Tomaro's bakery is absolutely a 5 star place. With the 5th generation of this family run business, they serve up the regional West Virginia specialty treat, the "pepperoni roll". I have been asking around "where is the best place for pepperoni rolls?" Since I "rolled" (I will not apologize for that pun) into town and this place is always at the top of the list. So I came and got one. And luckily it was straight out of the oven. A true working man's treat, this is exactly what it is named for. Sticks of pepperoni, cut into quarters lengthwise, and baked into fresh Italian bread. The bread has a very VERY slightly crisp to the outside that immediately yields to a well developed flavor and a toothsome texture. The grease from the pepperoni gets into the interior of the bread without making it soggy, so you get a serious burst of flavor from that, and then a well-balanced "meat to bread" ratio with the pepperoni itself. It reminds me of something my grandmother might have made for us kids on the rate occasion where "snack" DIDN'T mean "4 course meal made from scratch". I had already eaten, but I came in and visited with the owners a bit, and ended up eating two of these pepperoni rolls. They shared several ways to make them "doctored" up at home with mixed peppers and cheese, but rest assured these morsels stand up all on their own in the flavor department. A rock-solid, slammed out of the park 5 stars for this bakery.

Yelp
Working in a prominent auto dealership in Clarksburg, we had a tradition on Friday mornings of getting hot, fresh, just out of the oven pepperoni rolls from Tomaro's. Still really warm with a hot cup of coffee was the perfect way to start the day! Best I ever had!!

Yelp
I can never pass Clarksburg without stopping there and getting their pepperoni rolls. Of course I end up with two bags full because after my friends find out, I have been there they will come to my house and steal my supply so I must have enough that I can hide and share and I live in a place where pepperoni rolls are not a thing, but they're are now. Which is about 350 miles away from them.

Yelp
We go there all the time on Sundays for hot fresh pepperoni rolls. They are hot fresh and to die for.

Joyce F.

Yelp
Best Italian bread! Idk pepperoni rolls aren't as good as they used to be!!! New owner needs a refresh course in making the dough. Taste different!!

Michelle Q.

Yelp
I was born in Clarksburg, grew up on Italian bread and pepperoni rolls. Moved away and still continued to visit to get pepperoni rolls. Now in my later years I have orderd them off Gold Belly and always been happy UNTIL NOW!!!! They have changed the pepperoni and its NOT good. The rolls I just got through Gold Belly are SO DRY you choke trying to swallow them. I am so upset. These have been a part of our lives forever. Couldn't wait to get a SOFT roll with pepperoni and if you are lucky the grease from the pepperoni creates this wonderful part of the roll that is the best. i ALWAYS LOOKED FOR THE ROLL WITH THE MOST RED ON THE BOTTOM !! The pepperoni in the rolls we just got is so dry and roll is so dry.... don't waste your money!!!! Can't find anywhere to put review and of course no refund available on Gold Belly These rolls are awful. !!!!!!!!! I have got better ones at the gas station lately.

DeeAnn S.

Yelp
Since the bakery has switched ownership the pepperoni rolls are still as tasty as before but they are half the size for the same price. The taste is so good but the size is so small.

Yelp
When I think bakery, I think breads, cakes, cupcakes, pies and other tastebud inducing desserts. This is not that, what Tomaros is however is a place that serves up some great pepperoni rolls, italian bread and pizza shells. Service was friendly, this isnt a sit down place but more of pop in and pop out kind of place. A pepperoni roll is $1.50 and if you are hungry 3, will fill you up. I didn't see it so I'm not sure if it is available, but what goes great with bread and pepperoni? Cheese of course, I would take one with colby, one pepper jack, one mozzarella etc. If they had them.

Megan G.

Yelp
Don't let location scare you off. It's like walking into old North End of Boston. The bakery door is easily spotted. Parking plenty. And yes you can smell the bread baking from the sidewalks. I ordered four pepperoni rolls and a bag of mini pepperoni rolls. The regular size rolls were hot in the bag and worth every dangerous hot and steamy bite. The pepperoni flavorful and not greasy. Bread was proofed perfected and not heavy until the last bite. My boyfriend grew up in WV and went to school in the area but first time at Tomaro's for him; and he's given it the seal of approval as definition pepperoni roll

Sam J.

Yelp
When I was a kid, over 20 years ago, my mom would take us to Tomaro's after church let out every Sunday and we would get a loaf of bread. I know it sounds silly but I used to think it was weird when people didn't have Italian bread at their house, specifically Tomato's. It is the best bakery in town, hands down. The pepperoni rolls are amazing and cooked fresh and so is everything else they make. I couldn't recommend a place more to pick up this type of stuff more than here.

Yelp
I come here every time that I go home for a fresh pepperoni roll for myself and a bag of mini ones for my coworkers. They only take cash so be prepared. I used to also always get their fresh hard crust bread uncut. They have very fresh food that is always delicious. The place doesn't look like anything special from the outside but trust me it is well worth going inside. Their pepperoni rolls are so good that all my coworkers beg me to buy them some.

Chris N.

Yelp
The best pepperoni rolls in the area. Get them when they're hot. Get more than you think you want, you'll eat them. Try the Italian bread also! And take cash, they don't accept cards. Very friendly people. No seating, so plan on taking your food to go.

G S.

Yelp
the best pepperoni roll in WV if you live in fairmont, drive to clarksburg to get the best

Yelp
Ridiculously tasty bread. I prefer the hard Italian load because of the texture not to mention the taste. I believe that it's this same recipe that they use for their famous pepperoni rolls. These pepperoni rolls hot out of the oven are worth their weight in (1980's) gold.

Yelp
These are the best Peperoni Rolls around. I have tried them all and this Bakery has got it right. Tasty!

Yelp
I am from Wv and these are the best pepperoni rolls . My son lives in Cali and all he wants for his birthday is Tamaros pepperoni rolls , so this mom is shipping them to California .

Robyn L.

Yelp
OMG !!! An old school bakery....the scent is intoxicating and the staff was awesome. My Dad's family has lived in the area for decades and visiting always meant "pepperoni rolls" a regional treat. Sort of like a soft yeast roll will lots of pepperoni baked right in the middle of the roll.......they do not disappoint......had to buy 3 dozen pepperoni rolls before we left, to take to other family members in SC and VA. They do not take anything but cash, so make sure you have some to sample these delicious treats, looking forward to our next family visit !!

Yelp
I receive an order from Tomaro's Bakery every Christmas from a dear friend. My whole family looks forward to the delivery of delicious Italian bread and wonderful Pepperoni rolls that we can not get in Orlando, FL. Happy 100 year to a great bakery and family.

Rick V.

Yelp
The pepperoni rolls are worth going out of the way to get. You will find it difficult to stop eating them once you start. We didn't even get them particularly fresh out of the oven and they ere amazing. Totally worth going out of the way if need be.

Diane H.

Yelp
Excellent pepperoni rolls AND the other breads. When my friend comes to Virginia Beach he must bring a few dozen. Best I ever ate. Diane
