Café Tomate is the kind of place you want in your neighborhood - no fuss, no frills, just great all-day breakfast that hits the spot. It's not fancy, and it doesn't try to be, but what it does serve is solid, satisfying breakfast food at any hour. My personal favorite is the salmon lox scramble with salad instead of potatoes — it's filling and flavorful without feeling too heavy. Everything feels freshly made, and the portions are very generous. Bonus: they have outdoor seating, which is a huge plus, especially on a sunny day. If you're looking for a reliable spot to grab breakfast (or lunch that feels like breakfast), this is it.

I've been the last year on the hunt for the best breakfast burrito around. And although I felt satisfied previously with what I've found out there, without a doubt. This is the best burrito in the Bay area. I had the Baja breakfast burrito that was huge in size and portions inside. Perfectly cooked with excellent service will be coming back. And the coffee is incredible

Food was good and very well priced. Very comfortable to hang out for a little while as it was midweek and not too busy. Only quibble, I don't like thier home fries; oddly sweet.

We went to this place for brunch and really enjoyed ourselves. It has a dog friendly patio with lots of chill doggos. You order at the counter and the waiters bring the food to you. We ordered the lox scramble, the pesto omelette and the French toast with fruits. I was especially surprised by the omelette in a good way. Somehow the way they cooked it (with cheese a little browned on top) produced the perfect texture and flavor. The spicy potatoes were also very lovely and succulent. Loved my rye toast. I liked the lox scramble, personally a bit salty, but still delicious. The French toast was a bit more milky flavored than eggy...and I would have preferred a bit more eggs but still okay. Overall very happy with the food especially the pesto omelette 👌

I had a omelet, but it was a scramble instead, they tossed cheese on top, with no flavor and very expensive, bagel and omelet was over $40

The food is ok. The portions are not that big. Ordered 2 eggs+... but the egg was over cooked and probably they used the same pan as the one they used for the sausage and so the egg was smelling a little like burnt cooking oil. The coffee was good and I enjoyed it. Price was not bad .

The food here was not good. It tasted burnt and undercooked. Don’t know how that’s accomplished. I bought the food and just left it there. I got a latte and it was fine but just wasn’t that great either. The service was okay, but they definitely don’t go above and beyond. Do not recommend.

Average brunch experience. The lox scramble was a solid 3/5. Potatoes not cooked all the way, way too much onions in the egg scramble. A lot of the menu items you see in pictures on Google and yelp are no longer on the menu. Nice outdoor dining

Sweet, local cafe and restaurant with family-owned vibes. I ordered a chai latte (ehh ok) and a serving of zucchini pancakes (yummy potato-herb dish!) Pros: - good wifi and charging port availability - calm, laidback atmosphere - less busy on weekends Cons: - closes at 2pm - lack of non-coffee drink options

We were craving breakfast burritos so we made the quick trip here. The space is cute. There is also outdoor seating options for nice day. You order at the counter and they give you a number for them to bring the food out to you. Alas, service is a bit slow, so please be patient. Coffee is self serve.

A great day for French toast and this little place never lets me down. Good French toast, eggs over easy and a nice Arnold Palmer. Peaceful atmosphere and service. A Big YES I will come back and YES I I do recommend this to friends.

The staff is always kind to me. I go every other week. It's $$ and the food is like okay but it's fast, they're really sweet and always helpful. I have gotten the Turkey cold cut sandwich....I don't usually do cold cuts. Wouldn't order again. The chicken burrito is delicious!! The chicken sandwich okay. A lot of options have pork so I can't go here as often.

Food and service were okay, and the restaurant is in a nice location with relaxing ambiance. However, it was way too overpriced for what it was. Like a lot of things these days, high price without much value.

How has my mom not been here? She would love it. I came with my dad at least once, possibly twice. The food is very good. It's breakfast food, nothing extraordinarily innovative, but it looks and feels very clean, which is something I don't normally notice or comment on. The real attention-getter, the reason you come here, is its surprisingness and quaintness. You don't expect to find a place like this where it is in West Berkeley, but it's here! And you're not imagining things. I'll definitely be back, but I tend not to think of Berkeley anymore, which is understandable and sad and justified, but ancient. (Make mine a 99.)

Great service and great price for the food quality! Great greatness and service. Super friendly! We are in town visiting our son. We brought our furry baby. I searched "dog friendly restaurant" This one came up near us. We went everything was great. No signs on the door about dogs. We order and decided to sit inside as the wind was picking up. We got our food and one of the servers asked is we had our dog papers.... I said papers!? She replied yes to be inside. We told her yes but I was still confused. My husband then told me, she is asking as if she's a service dog.... Omg I felt like an idiot. Anywho. She is not a service dog. I do suggest for at least to put out a sign by door. Anyway.... Everything clean and ver organized!

The burrito used to be 7$ couple of years ago now it's 17$ hmmm why this price jump nothing has changed in the item expect the price

If I could give a minus 5 for terrible service, I would. Had a meal, wanted to buy a gift certificate for a friend that lives near by, was told that they don't know how to do it in the restaurant, and to use their website and the Toast function on their website. The gift certificate was never emailed to a friend, and after 3 calls, got to Claudia the Manager who doesn't know how to access Toast and the Owner Jack never had the decency nor respect to call me to clear up the situation. So, cancelled the over $100 transaction AND ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING A GIFT CERTIFICATE HERE. Their customer service sucks.

Veggie burrito a must try, very delicious and filling, service excellent, fast hot and fresh!

Stopped here for a Saturday afternoon lunch. The food quality is solid. Although it is pricey, with $17 sandwiches and $7 (mediocre) iced coffee, the portions are generous so you can easily split a dish. What I like most about this place is that there is never a wait, the food comes out fast, and the indoor and outdoor seating are both comfortable. Dog-friendly too.

Cute little cafe, with enough tables and space to fill overcrowded. Also has outside seating to enjoy as well. Food was fulfilling and tasteful but nothing crazy. Maybe because I went with a basic meal. I will say service was extremely quick and the employees were extremely nice. Please take your dishes to the designated area to help the employees and cafe clean.

Great salads, fast service and a cute outdoor patio. It's family owned and the staff is very kind, polite and always smiling. Although I did happen to try some of their sweet baked goods and those were okay. This salad place is definitely much better than the Italian place nearby.

The breakfast/lunch here is simply amazing ! I love it ! Customer service is really good and they make you feel really welcome every time you step foot in here .

Very clean and pet friendly outdoor seatings. Food was just okay. Very ordinary American breakfast. Portion was small. Some dishes are available in half portion for small eater. Self served water station available. Pet water bowl was by the entrance. Bathroom is clean. There's a extra sink right outside of bathroom for those who only needs to wash hands.

Never try to make a reservation here, the manager LIES. I had said my group of 12 were coming weeks ago and they took my name and number. Never got a call and they made a reservation for 40 people over mine which I find out the day before. I will not be coming to this cafe again, many other spots in the east bay can accommodate my group.

I had lunch here with a friend today. Not our first visit. I hesitated when my friend chose this place, but she thought the patio would be nice. This time I had huevos rancheros and they were just weird. Greasy tortilla, odd sauce, like no other huevos rancheros I ever had. My friend had a turkey sandwich and potato salad. The sandwich looked very ordinary and my friend complained about the potato salad, which she said was very heavy on the mustard. The bill came to more than $35 (no drinks, just the food). Overpriced for what we got. I doubt I'll come for a third visit.

Great sandwiches here. Lovely outdoor courtyard. Popular lunch spot for many nearby businesses. My coworkers and I enjoyed lunch here one sunny afternoon.

Finding delicious Huevos Rancheros is not easy as many of you know, so if you're looking for a delicious hearty breakfast look no further. Living in a current world of inflation and outrageous pricing, Tomate for being in Berkeley has food options for everyone. We were part of the first wave of customers who dined-in on Sunday. Although, we were not greeted as we entered the restaurant, we enjoyed our dining experience and will be coming back. Especially after learning the outdoor patio is dog friendly, can't wait to have breakfast with our dogs outside once the weather gets better. The restaurant was clean and spacious, the food was delicious, coffee was freshly brewed, and have a self-serve water station with cups.

OVERPRICED is an understatement. We landed on this place because it was a Sunday and we didn't want to wait in brunch lines. Now I wish we had. I ended up only getting chicken apple sausage, 2 medium dry links, $6.95 and two pieces of toast, barely an any butter on the toast, $4.95. I asked for a bowl of fruit, $11.95!!!! TWELVE BUCKS FOR A BOWL OF FRUIT and SEVEN BUCKS for dry and dense chicken apple sausage. I cancelled the fruit once I saw it on the register screen and was like are you kidding me. The service was unfriendly, my total for 2 likes of gross sausage, which I didn't eat (had 3 bites), 2 pieces of toast and an almond milk cappuccino was $25 bucks. Never again will I come to this overpriced, unfriendly and frankly tasteless restaurant.

I felt like having breakfast foods, so I decided to order delivery from here. - Jumpstart Breakfast: It came with scrambled eggs, veggie bacon, a huge pancake, and syrup (you can customize the items that go into it). The veggie bacon doesn't really compare in crispiness or sharpness/saltiness to meat bacon unfortunately, but I did enjoy the pancake and syrup. The scrambled eggs were done fine too. - Black beans: They're pretty standard, I think it's hard to get beans wrong. I thought it was fine, they weren't really spiced or flavored but they aren't too mushy. - Zucchini potato cakes: They provide two of them, which as you might guess from the main ingredients, isn't strongly-flavored, but I still found them savory and flavorful enough for my liking. Their size makes them a nice appetizer. Overall, I enjoyed all the dishes and this would be a nice spot for a breakfast, brunch, or lunch if you're out in west Berkeley.

The food is normally decent, but the prices are high. Good spot for a quick sandwich and a cup of soup if you're in the neighborhood.

I love that it's easy to park here and has comfortable seating inside and out. Today I tried huevos rancheros, which were served on two fried corn tortillas with black beans and topped with fresh avocado. There were breakfast potatoes and chicken sausage on the side. The crispy tortillas and salsa were great as was the sausage. The beans were flavorless and unsalted and the breakfast potatoes had a great texture but the flavor wasn't too great. For $18 for the plate I don't think it's a great deal.

Came on Memorial Day - it was pretty slow. Food is okay for the price point, I was hoping for something better. Spent close to $50 on an omelette, bagel with cream cheese and avocado, coffee and a small orange juice. The food and ambience are nothing to write home about. Service was decent.

Great place for brunch!! Everything is filling and delicious. Loved my breakfast burrito here! I decided to try it with the bbq pork and I honestly really liked it. Others in the group got the sand which, omelets, or other breakfast burritos (all of which were pretty large) and they were all good and filling. Prices here were also good. Seating was available indoors and outdoors. Street parking all around.

Wide ranging menu with lots of diverse choices. The eggs and bacon were quite good. Coffee is weak, though.

I have eaten lunch twice at this location and it's a great low key place! Never too busy, always clean, food has always been good, and the prices are very reasonable. I will surely come here more often

DO NOT BE DECEIVED this place looks so unassuming yet their food and coffee surpassed my expectations (they were admittedly low). Their coffee is REAL COFFEE, flavorful and complex, deliciously brewed, without any added sugar or creamer. Their Baja burrito was filling and the perfect size. I heard that the bacon was crisped to perfection as well. The staff was a bit lackluster but overall I enjoyed it. It wasn't too busy so we got a bit more of a casual breakfast that felt really comfortable. I'll definitely be back!

Great accidental find. Certainly not as busy as the other end of fourth street, and great outdoor and indoor ambiance. The food was solid comes quick. Coffee was good without adding sugar, reminded me of Nawlins. If I'm in the area I will remember this as a not too busy alternative.

I came here for breakfast and ordered a classic breakfast of two over medium eggs, bacon, rye toast, and potatoes, which was $16.50- a bit pricey for a basic meal. I also ordered a latte which was $6.50! I'm not sure why. The food was okay. I asked for the potatoes to be well done and they were served so soggy and mushy. I did not eat them. The eggs were a little runny and the bacon was pretty good. Mediocre breakfast, over priced.

Outdoor dining available during COVID-19!!! Gf and I met up here a while ago - yay for outdoor dining!! She enjoyed her vanilla latte and I enjoyed my roasted potatoes and zucchini cakes (were yum but over time became a little sour/salty) - total came to $11 Love supporting local businesses especially during COVID-19 And again..outdoor dining!!! Happy to visit if I'm ever in the area and need a place to catch up and something to grub on

Life Savers for Business! I had ordered from another vendor from GrubHub for a business meeting today. They cancelled my breakfast order two hours before the meeting (insert panic attack here). Tomate Cafe not only took my last minute order for 8 people, but it was on time and my senior leadership was absolutely RAVING about the quality of the food and coffee! One attendee said the potatoes were "sublime!", "breakfast was The BOMB!" Thank you Tomate Cafe - you are absolute life savers! I've shared your information with about 30 executive assistants in my organization.

The best clean breakfast in Berkeley! I love the huevos rancheros, black beans, eggs any style and bacon with avocado. They have a delicious lentil soup that is perfect for an over cast morning. Their smoothies are delicious and made with quality ingredients to order, I love the green smoothie! Their fresh squeezed orange juice is one of the best I've ever had! Thirst quenching!

Came to Tomate Cafe for the first time last week, and I came out of this experience surprised at how good the food was! There were a lot of options on the menu- from breakfast foods, Mexican, salads, and sandwiches. For food I tried the Harvest Breakfast, A1 Steak Burrito, and Iced Latte: - Harvest Breakfast: I loved every bite of this fish, and the caramelized apples were such a wonderful touch to the dish. The sweetness from the apples balanced out the savoriness of everything else. Eggs were cooked perfectly-- I really have no complaints. - A1 Steak Breakfast Burrito: Had a few bites of my boyfriend's burrito. Steak bites were tender and plenty, though we both felt that The A1 steak sauce was more prominent in the burrito. - Iced Latte: not good or bad, but was refreshing nonetheless. Definitely looking forward to the next time I go to Tomate Cafe to try the other dishes they have!

Ordered delivery from grubhub today. The almond milk latte was decent. The fresh squeezed orange juice was great. Unfortunately though, the the lox scramble was a bit weird, the lox were cooked - no longer smoked salmon. I appreciate that a bagel came with the meal (I chose an everything bagel but received a sesame bagel though). Also, the meal didn't come with butter or cream cheese or anything for the bagel which would have helped. Also no napkins or utensils and the container was soggy/flimsy. No delivery protections either - no sticker or seals on the bag or either of the drink.

Spent $40 bucks on breakfast from here & it was a complete waste of my money. I'm sorry but it was horrible. The French toast was so slimy I couldn't help but gag after eating some. The portions were super small for the price. My bacon was so undercooked I'm sure it wasn't safe to eat it. I was very disappointed and so was my husband. Before even opening the to go box he warned me I would be upset and he was right. I wish I could get my money back! SMH

We stayed at a local hotel and figured based on the reviews that Tomate was a better option for breakfast. The breakfast burritos were expensive but I will say they were at least good and hearty. The price for the basic breakfast was certainly not worth it. My daughter and son had the pancake and French toast. They were lucky if they had two teaspoons of egg in the box. Underwhelming and that certainly brings my review down.

Tomate is a simple breakfast spot if that is what you are looking for. It is a small little spot that may be easily missed if you are not looking for it. Parking is street parking, there was plenty of parking when I came around brunch time on a weekday. I tried the Banana Strawberry Smoothie and French Toasts with berries, eggs, and sausages plate.

You ever look at a sandwich board on the sidewalk and say to yourself, "Hey, I think I'll walk over and try this place," without knowing a thing about it? That's what happened when Jamie W. and I stumbled out of a tasting at Takara Sake. It was shrewd of the cafe owner to place the board in front of the factory since they offered no munchies as we downed multiple shot glasses of sake. It was a further walk than we expected, even though it was less than three blocks but keep in mind, our motor skills were infused with rice liquor. It was about 1:30PM, and you could tell the staff was anxious to close up as they were starting to rolling up the patio furniture. We both ordered the $10.95 Tofu Scramble because it featured broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, cabbage, cherry tomatoes, and green onions. Mixed with the eggs and tofu chunks and accompanied by whole wheat toast, we both agreed the result was bland and lacked enough seasoning to make much of a flavor impact (photo: http://bit.ly/2vqpRaN). The by-the-numbers food just wasn't alluring enough to draw us back. The food is good, as always, but the prices are crazy. For $17.50, I expect table service at least. Add in coffee, tax, and tip and you're coming up on $30 for breakfast. And that's too rich for my blood.

According to the take-out menu - it looks like the full jumpstart breakfast is $14, but that you can choose half. So one assumes that half is less than $14. But in fact $14 is for a half jumpstart breakfast. For comparison a full huevos rancheros is $14. Please see the attached screenshot to see how easy it is to get confused. If I would have bought everything separately I would have paid $3.50 for 1 slice of french toast and $2.50 for the 1 slice of bacon for a total of $6. That would leave $8.00 for 1 poached egg? So I really don't get why I had to pay $14 for one slice of french toast, one slice of bacon and a badly poached egg. But a restaurant can of course charge whatever they want, and we could have decided not to buy it, but my complaint is that your online advertising is misleading. Please see the attached screenshot. Sour sausages, crusty eggs, cardboard french toast...also the french toast was pictured with fruit but did not come with any...would rate less than 1 star if I could, clearly this place only exists to make a quick profit

This place is terrible. My $14.50 BLTA measured 4.5" square. It was meh at best. My girlfriend's $14 breakfast order was three ingredients and undercooked toast placed vaguely near one another on a pate. If a friend served this kind of food to you at their house you wouldn't describe it as bad so much as feel bad for them as they obviously eat this way every day and don't know how to combine ingredients together to make a meal out of it. Our bill was $36+tip including coffee, which makes it a 1* yelp destination

I've driven by this cafe for years so I was really excited to try it, plus the reviews were pretty good. I ordered pancakes, French toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes and cookies. I ordered over the phone and arrived at the restaurant about 15 minutes later. The food was ready which I appreciated and the cashier was really nice. Everything was bland except the French toast and sausage. It's a little pricey, so I felt it was a waste of money. I wouldn't recommend ordering the breakfast. When I walked inside I noticed the environment had plenty plants and nice music so this would be a nice location to eat inside at. Just needs better breakfast food.
