A Critic Unearths Taco Gems on the North Side - Eater Chicago

"Last but not least, Tomatillo Taco-Ville serves a 'reliable roster of classic tacos' as well as a fish taco with cabbage and pico de gallo which are 'as unassuming and satisfying as anything you could ask for.'" - Jeffy Mai

Sula Thinks Fort Willow’s Throwback Playground is Worth Seeking Out - Eater Chicago

"It’s easy to overlook Tomatillo Tacoville but Michael Nagrant says it’s 'worth stopping for.' The Mexican 'wonderland’s' meats are 'well-caramelized and well-salted' and include al pastor, carnitas, and carne asada. A 'just right' shower of onions and cilantro are all that’s needed to make these tacos sing. Even Nagrant’s six-year-old agrees: They’re the real deal. [Michael Nagrant]" - Jeffy Mai

Taco is good. Meat little on the hard side and oily. . Flavor Is good. Rice is bad. Beans are good. But I can’t say it’s a 1 star. 3 at most.

Rachel Goat

Google
I would give it a 3.5 if I could. This place is like cilantro but not as high of quality. The burritos were pretty small and not the best tortilla quality. Overall very average.

Google
Picked up take out from here for $48 and they couldn’t even bother to give me fresh steak meat. On top of that they all barely had meat. All of my tacos dry except the chicken ones because they were braised. The tortillas weren’t even fully cooked. I also didn’t even receive the correct toppings and what I did receive was the tiniest sprinkle, doesn’t cost a thing yet everything was skimped on. So unhappy with the quality of the food and I’ve been here before just never takeout. I won’t be coming back here after the food I received. The one saving grace was the horchata and the salsa, that’s it.

Google
Dined in here to try their tacos and margaritas, their taco Tuesday special is decently priced at $2 a taco and they also have happy hour. I ordered steak and chicken tacos, they were served extremely fast like literally 3 minutes and a mango margarita which came with a chamoy rim. I personally think the steak could have used a little more seasoning but the chicken was great, everything tasted very fresh and the employees were kind. Overall it was pretty good, I would recommend this place if you’re in the area.

Google
Always great! They always exceed our expectations and are always super friendly and professional. Definitely a local favorite of ours! Edit: 3+ years later and still a local favorite of ours! Carnitas Tacos, Chorizo Breakfast Burrito, or nachos are our top choices!

Google
Good place to get some food. Food was great, new owners are really good at treating their customers from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. Definitely will be back

Juan Martinez

Google
Overall a good experience. The food makes a good first impression and looks delicious. I ordered the taco dinner (approx. $10) which was 3 steak tacos and rice and beans. The tacos and rice were good but the beans were disappointing (out of a can?). The place is quaint with a good vibe as you'll likely hear some Latin music playing in the background. Simple but authentic menu and one you would expect from a place like this. There is outdoor seating but the weather didn't cooperate. Prices are reasonable for the offerings. I enjoyed my first visit and will likely be back with others. I would have liked for the entire meal to have been satisfying... But not a bad first experience. I'm not opposed to giving them another chance. Worth a visit.

Google
Excellent taste on the Carnitas and Pastor burritos! Good size for the price as well. Another small touch is that it's grilled and sealed really well and didn't fall apart like so many other burritos.

Yelp
Best breakfast burrito! Sooo good! Great place for takeout or lovely eating there too! Hidden gem
google avatar

Yelp
Serves the least amount of food for the most amount of money then on go orders they expect a fat tip. This restaurant practices best practices for making the fattest profit. Burritos are packed with cheap rice, avocados sliced super thin like a newspaper so they are just for show. Sour cream ? You get a thin line squeezed out of a ketchup decanter. They practically count each piece of shredded cheese with a tweezer. Don't come here hungry but do come here prepared to spend $15.00 for a tiny lunch that will leave you hungry. The place was also completely empty.

Yelp
Good fast taco options! We had their veggie tacos and veggie tostada! It was decent. I liked their salsas for the added spice. We also tried their street corn and it was okay not flavorful. I liked the food overall and feel it was a good taco option for the area just avoid the corn.

Yelp
Muy bien !!! Stopped in for dinner and was very pleased. I got the breakfast burrito with chorizo and egg which was big and delicious. I always get horchata when I go for Mexican and theirs was good. Had to try the fresh guacamole, which came out pretty fast with chips and I was surprised at how much guacamole they gave Everything was really good.

Yelp
Best tacos in northern suburbs. Not greasy at all. Nice people. Clean, place nice dining area take out and eat in

Yelp
This restaurant was absolutely fantastic! I came in for lunch and will definitely be returning. The food quality was excellent and well-priced. The ambiance was very clean and festive. Customer service was nice and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Our local taco place hasn't been good lately so we decided to try somewhere new. I ordered from GrubHub so I can't comment on the service and the ambiance. We got a veggie burrito bowl and a three taco dinner with steak, carnitas, barbacoa. I thought the steak was flavorless, but the barbacoa and carnitas were good. I loved the pickled carrots. I also enjoyed the salsas and chips. I didn't care for the rice but I really liked the flavor and heat in the beans. Overall, this place was decent and had some nice touches.

Joseph g.

Yelp
Best Mexican Tacos around! All the veggies are fresh and crunchy. Tortillas are crisp and soft. Meat is well seasoned and fresh. Definitely the best taco place in a 30mile radius in my opinion. A must try!

Yelp
Definitely not worth the $9.99 which was supposed to come with beans lettuce tomato. I asked for a breakfast burrito, with their scrambled eggs and no meat and I ended up with this sad scrambled eggs, only, wrap/burrito thing. I guess you get what you paid for but definitely not worth more than $6.99 as is. Oh, and the owner jugging back beer after beer and not even noon yet. Never again.

Yelp
Tried out Tomatillo Taco-Ville for the first time last night and I was very disappointed. My wife ordered the Taco Dinner (Vegetable) and I ordered the Burrito Dinner (Vegetable). We both felt like it might have been the worst veggie taco and veggie burrito we have ever had. My burrito was just lettuce and tomato with a little rice and beans. My wife's taco had the same ingredients but had some avocado. Perhaps I should have asked, but I was expecting some veggies in my burrito, perhaps some fajita vegetables. It felt like they gave me a meat burrito and just removed the meat. Check out my picture and tell me if that is not the most non-appetizing burrito you have ever seen. I was also disappointed that you have to pay for chips and salsa. I decided to buy some in order to try them out. The chips were nice and hot, but the salsa was served cold. I didn't like the combination of hot chips and cold salsa. I felt the same with the 3 squeeze bottles of sauces we were given for our burrito and tacos. The bottles and sauces were cold and just did not pair well with warm food. I honestly cannot see myself coming back when there are better options nearby.

Jennifer R.

Yelp
First timer. I ended up ordering a 3 tamal dinner. Pork tamales were decent size and hot but some of the pork was a bit tough. Rice and beans that come with it were ...eh. Not hot and not all that flavorful. Service was a bit weird. It would have been nice if they had real silverware and not plastic. I got my food right away, but didn't get chips and salsa until after my food came. Also, I had to ask for the can of coke I ordered. Overall, ok food. I'd like to come back and try other things (tacos, tortas, tomatillo platter). The desserts are from a Mexican bakery. They looked good but kinda expensive.

Yelp
Food was healthy and delicious. The people who worked there were extremely friendly! If you go you must try the hibiscus juice!

Yelp
This place is so good! First time eating here after wanting to try it for some time now. The food is so fresh tasting and authentic. The establishment is clean and the people who work here are so warm and friendly! Makes all the difference! This will now be our go-to spot!

Yelp
Tried Tomatillo out this evening. I have to say that the 3 taco plate was excellent. I ordered a fish, 2 carnitas, and an extra barbacoa taco. Great thing was that they messed up and gave me all three carnitas and it was so good. Fish who? The barbacoa was plain and was not something I'd order again. Guacamole was fresh and home made. Excellent flavor and nice use of cilantro. What I really liked on the table was the pickled veggies. Not too spicy and boy was it a treat. Whole garlic, carrots, onions, and peppers. The refried beans were pretty standard and the Spanish rice was so so. Chips were not served warm nor were they included but the guacamole and chips were only $6.50 and worth it. If you want to get a fountain drink this place doesn't have it but they do offer bottled Coke's and such. This place is a keeper in our rotation.

Yelp
Tacos were okay. We tried a new place out and ordered carry out. They forgot to include the chips to our $7 chips and guac. I called them back and they didn't really seem apologetic. They also did not include any salsas for our tacos. A bit disappointed since the tacos were pretty decent, the service brought it down.

Yelp
I only like to review restaurants if I only have something good to say (meaning I rarely, RARELY leave a bad review) but today, I was REALLY disappointed by this restaurant. Today was my first time trying Tomatillo. Long story short, we ordered in the restaurant, and as I was checking the bag, the woman told me everything was in there, so I'm good to go. When we got home, we realized they messed up 3 things: one of our tacos was a veggie taco when I ordered fish, and they also forgot 2 of our asada tacos (which we had ordered as a meal for our youngest). We called to tell them they'd made a mistake because on the receipt, there is clearly 2 "items", but it's just blank/dashes (they must've pressed the wrong button or something?Either way, that's not our mistake.) We asked them if they can deliver our 2 tacos to makeup for it so our youngest could eat. They said they didn't charge us for it, therefore, it isn't their problem. They accused us of having forgotten to order it, when it's clearly on the receipt. They'd even asked us if we wanted cilantro/onions/etc on it, and they still accused the situation of being our mistake, saying we didn't order it at all! Also, it says they deliver, but the woman kept saying she cant deliver and that it wasn't their responsibility. She literally told me to order it on Uber Eats if I wanted it. WHY WOULD I PAY EXTRA MONEY ON UBER EATS FOR A MISTAKE THEY MADE?! I even offered to pay for the 2 tacos to get it delivered since we weren't "charged" for it, and they still refused. We weren't given an apology or anything. I've worked in the service industry for years and I've never seen such unapologetic service. It wasn't a difficult order nor was it busy. We wanted to support our local businesses, but I guess some just don't care enough for their customers. TLDR: They screwed up our order and refused to apologize/make up for it. They accused us of it being our mistake. Extremely disappointing service.

Yelp
The food was terrible. Quesadilla was microwaved. Tacos were ice cold, no flavor, best thing was the horchata. Even the chips were stale.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
I always rate a new Mexican restaurant by how good it's al pastor (marinated pork) is. It was very delicious here. I like how they give you the assorted hot sauces in the taqueria-style bottles, as well. Give this place a shot. Tasty and affordable.

D D.

Yelp
I think that this place deserves more credit. My favorite things are tacos and burrito. Their pork and steak are my favorites. Reasonably priced.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Yum. This particular intersection has lacked good Mexican food for a while... maybe forever (I've known the area for 30+ years so chances are good). Thank goodness this spot opened! Traditional Mexican food, with fresh ingredients and thoughtful prep. Friendly staff. Great al pastor, and chorizo is somewhat spicy (it never is spicy enough for me!) but not greasy as you'd often find. Fresh taco shells. Creamy green sauce I can't identify but great alternative to salsa. Reasonable prices and I definitely need to return for the tres leches.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! The food is great and the employees are all about great customer service. This is my 4th time in here and the food is just so consistent. The same amazing flavors as the other days. I ordered 2 tacos de pollo with cilantro and avocado only. The chicken is so juicy and not overpowered by spice. The avocado is always fresh and the cilantro taste like it was picked today. The tortillas they use hold up well. I'm assuming they are el Milagros. The meat to tortilla ratio is great for a taco at $2.50! The green salsa is perfectly made. Not too spicy and a perfect addition to the tacos. If you have not tried this place you're missing out. They have a special everyday of the week. When in the area, I will be spending my lunch here again!

Alla S.

Yelp
Finally tried this place. Saw it open up and have been wanting to try it. The beans and rice are vegetarian so a good start! I ordered the three taco plate which comes with rice and beans. The tacos were tasty and you get two salsas and a creamy sauce. I tried the veggie tacos and the stuffed pepper tacos. Both really good and come with a good amount of different ingredients. I especially liked the avocado pieces instead of the typical guacamole. The beans were a little spicy which made it very tasty. Had also a horchata and a churro for dessert. They accidentally gave the regular churro instead of the caramel filled but it was still good. The horchata was great and large enough to split. I'd say perfect proportions. Ate all but an extra taco I ordered of which I didn't need. Overall I'd say good Mexican food and a place I'll definitely go to again!

Yelp
I'm really confused because I've gotten food here before and it was pretty good. Today, however, was a different story. I'm not sure if it's cause COVID hit hard or what, but the only thing I liked from dinner was the tres leches cake. Although to be frank, it tasted store bought. I ordered steak fajitas and my boyfriend got the enchiladas. Neither of us liked our entree. To me, the rice and beans were just ok, but the meat was absolutely terrible: stringy, tough, and tasting of liver. My order also didn't have the tortillas that usually come with fajitas. No bueno. The enchiladas seemed slightly less inedible, but when I tried it, I got a piece of slimy chicken - most likely congealed chicken juice or fat. That turned me off real quick. Overall, a huge disappointment from the messed up order to the poor quality of food. I feel pretty bad because I generally like supporting local restaurants, but I don't think I'll be back for another go.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Liked the 3 taco dinner. Ground beef was good. Barbabcoa was ok. Would definitely return
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Ordered a taco salad (just "OK"), Burrito Meal (dry, bland and tasteless), a Taco Dinner (Seriously underwhelming, Barbacoa was wet and "slimy" tasting and El Pastor was burnt) and Chips and Salsa (MISSING!! Never delivered) for a to-go order. Thought about ordering some Churros, but they looked old and dry. NOTHING about this experience tells me that we will ever make a return trip. Missing items is a sure way to drive business away. I don't want to kill this place so soon after they opened up (and I love Mexican food), but unless they step up their game to match the other location, they aren't going to do well. I will keep an eye on the reviews and may give them another try and updated review if the reviews get better over time...
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
Omg!! Food here is sooooo delicious. Always very polite people. Amazing service. Thank you always.

Ralph M.

Yelp
Place order online didn't receive all items ,called restaurant and couldn't get credit for missing food. Couldn't get missing food delivered either. Will not be going back to this place every again.
google avatar

Yelp
Place is straight the bomb. Prices are very fair, and it is very authentic and amazing on the quicks. They hook it up with avocados in the burrito and their guacamole is literally perfect. Super nice staff, very clean, and just very homey. I loved that I brought my family with me and will continue to do so. The menu is simplistic and it makes it really easy to make a decision. Whatever you pick, you will not go wrong. HIGHLY Recommended!!! Cilantro Heaven FYI This is def. my Mexican joint. 2nd time and it was the bomb again. They forgot my fish taco salsa but quickly got me on track with plentiful pickled cabbage. I rarely write two reviews or "check-in" places. But the staff is so nice and the food is delicious, it's just a real gem! (BTW: sorry for the kids mess)

Dave C.

Yelp
The Taco Tuesday special was very good. The sauces on the table complimented the tacos and the chips. Nothing fancy - but if you are looking for tacos or standard Mexican fare, this is a good option.

Louis S.

Yelp
Good food friendly service. Wasn't expecting no table service but I guess that is the trend right now.
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Most authentic tasting tacos I've ever had in the U.S. Had the ground beef tacos with onions and cilantro on a corn tortilla-exquisite!! I also had a chicken taco, which was good, but not as outstanding.
google avatar

Alyse R.

Yelp
We have ordered here before for both pick up and delivery. Up until today our experiences have been perfect and easy with excellent tasting food. When I went in to pick up a Grub Hub order the receipt presented to me was not the same as our e-mailed confirmation. The confusion caused me to pay for an extra item that I did not see on the printed receipt. The order was then packed up in a very disorganized manner and with little confidence by the person behind the counter. A dessert item was even forgotten until it was mentioned upon leaving. At home, it was realized that more of our order was wrong. Only 1 item of a 4 item dinner was prepared and packed up for us. When I called to ask for a free delivery of those missing items, they could not find my online order for confirmation and told me they could not send out the delivery due to short staff. This was a very disappointing experience, since we've always had great service and delicious food here. Needless to say we will not be returning customers in the future.

Dominika K.

Yelp
Never thought I would think of tacos as a comfort food (coming from a Eastern European background) but that's what I get when I order the ground taco dinner from Tomatillo. The texture and taste is just right and it fills not only my belly but my heart. And talk about love - the avocado green sauce is THE best. Put it on your taco, on your rice, put it on ANYTHING if you want some flavor and heat. Yummy!
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Absolutely outstanding! Margarita was top-notch, Carnitas Tacos were world-class, cebollitas were great. Definitely coming back after I finish the two extra Carnitas tacos I ordered after finishing 1-Asada, 1-Carnitas and 2-Chicken tacos from my first order!!!!
google avatar

Tony N.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles. These are the best tacos I've had in the Midwest barring Texas. Come in for taco Tuesday and have the carnitas and the pastor!
google avatar

Greg W.

Yelp
Had a steak burrito and a pork tamale at this restaurant. Was exceptionally clean. Food was very good. Price was very reasonable. 4 choices of salsa. Tried two of the choices and both were excellent. Location is perfect with lots of parking. Outdoor seating available also.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
New Mexican place. Beautiful clean interior. They have the amazing hot avocado salsa. Tacos and burritos were decent. Guacamole and pick de Gallo were awesome. Definitely a step up compared to other local Mexican places. Ambience and cleanliness makes it that much better. Would recommend they change their outdoor signage since I originally thought it was an Italian place with a green tomato logo. Would definitely recommend this tacos place
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
The taco salad ( no rice )was ABSOLUTELY kick-ass delicious !!!! Had the Guacamole and chips and it was fresh and delicious!! Am definitely telling everyone about this place !! I will also be back for sure !!
google avatar

Christopher K.

Yelp
Family drove by and stopped in because the decor and signage was so well done. The food was even better. The Guacamole was freshly made and delicious. We tried the beef, chicken, pork, and barbacoa tacos. All outstanding! We have a new favorite here in town. Recommend this place for sure!!
google avatar

Jael R.

Yelp
Not your typical taco joint, modern yet authentic Mexican food. Been there a couple times and it's very consistent. Had a burrito de asada. Yum! Really friendly staff and reasonable prices. Would definitely come back!!
google avatar

Hubert P.

Yelp
Great Spot! Quality Meat and Great Tasting Tortillas! They have a good variety of tasty Salsas and i would highly recommend this to anyone who loves quality mexican food. I was looking for a new place to eat for Mexican after our move to Northbrook and after trying multiple places, this is the one! They also offer GrubHub Delivery!
google avatar

Morgan U.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went there for the first time today for Taco Tuesday! What a great deal $1.50 tacos! We got pork tacos with cilantro and onions honestly THE BEST TACOS IVE EVER HAD!! We might go back for dinner lol. Definitely 10/10!
google avatar

Rudy B.

Yelp
Clean establishment. Well decorated for a hole in the wall in strip mall. Great food. Friendly employees. Patio seating. Plenty of parking. My new go to Mexican food for close to home.
google avatar

Tommy N.

Yelp
So fresh so tasty. This place does everything well...had a steak chorizo burrito...the best part is the chorizo is not greasy! Love this place, they don't cut corners and everything is made and served with pride. When you come here you are familia!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. The guacamole is amazing. While we have not had the true authentic meals (tripe and tongue), we have sampled everything else. Zero complaints- it's just what you are in the mood to eat. It is all good!

Jason R.

Yelp
Attempted to try their breakfast. The store is posted to open at 10 but at 10 after door was still locked. Minutes later the staffer opened the door. When I went in myself and other customers were masked while the employee was not. The gentlemen seemed to have a hard time explaining the single menu item I inquired about and then charged me 2 dollars more than the posted price. I told him to forget it. Not opening on time, not following basic health protocol, and having issues communicating or displaying correctly price was just not worth the effort. Too bad.

Rodney H.

Yelp
Phenomenal. Steak tacos and tamales are amazing! Their Horchata is absolutely delicious and the environment (inside & out) is very nice. Food came out fast and it's very clean. Last & certainly not least, their creamy & spicy light green salsa is the best salsa I've had. Ever. I asked our awesome waitress if they sold the creamy salsa and she said yes! I bought two jars. This place blows Salsa Street & Tacos El Norte out of the water.
google avatar

Jay D.

Yelp
Family-run, premium ingredients, traditional Mexican taqueria. The digital menu counter-service belies some really well-prepared food. The service is usually prompt, and always friendly! The chorizo is do-not-miss! I'm not an avocado fan, but my wife and kids say their guacamole is top notch! The salsas are also house-made and delicious. Be sure to check out this new Buffalo Grove gem!!
google avatar

Aslhey C.

Yelp
My husband and I have been here a couple times now since they've opened. The steak tacos & steak torta never disappoints especially with they're delicious green creamy salsa! We've also tried the steak burrito and it's also really good! The staff has gotten our orders wrong a couple times but they fix it right away. I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Penni S.

Yelp
We've gone in often to support local, family owned business and have never been disappointed. The food has always been delicious and fresh and the pickled veggies on the table is a nice touch. Everyone who works here is friendly and helpful, and the dining area is always super clean. Some have complained about no chips on the table, but this restaurant is right across the street from the high school, and if they gave free chips and salsa at the table, they would've been out of business within a week. The chips and guacamole are well worth paying extra. All in all, Tomatillo's is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
