Best New Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Prolific North Carolina restaurateur Giorgios Bakatsias continues his coastal expansion with Tomiko-San in Lumina Commons. The restaurant specializes in sushi and traditional Japanese dishes, including chicken teriyaki, pork donburi, and Japanese curry. For sushi, there’s a la carte options for snapper, tuna, scallop, sea urchin, and more, along with signature rolls like the Baltimore (cucumber, lettuce, scallion, jumbo lump crab salad, ponzu, and avocado crema) and the Shogun (spicy salmon and mirin glazed carrots rolled in chicharron crumbs and topped with crispy garlic chili oil). The omakase service is available at the bar by reservation only." - Matt Lardie

My wife and I stumbled upon this place when looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary, and what a joy that we did! Our server, Andrea, was attentive, friendly and wonderful. Our drinks were great, we both tried one of their signature cocktail and both were inspired and flavorful. We decided to order off the omakase menu, and the chefs' creation truly blew us out of the water! I've eaten a lot of sushi in my day, and this might still have been some of the freshest and best nigiri and sashimi I've ever experienced, and the specialty roll was inspired. 100% will be back, this is going to be our new #1 sushi spot in Wilmington!

Such a fun date night spot! This place is a 10/10! Everything we ordered was super fresh, portions were perfect. Their cocktail menu was very, very unique. The manager introduced us to a delicious Sake that has now become one of our favorites! Everything was super clean, attention to detail is definitely there. We can’t wait to come back to this beautiful establishment!

I really liked this place!! This is my new sushi spot. They focus on omakase and traditional Japanese hot dishes. The decor is modern, yet warm and inviting. We sat at the sushi bar where the chefs work their magic right in front of you. It was really cool watching them craft each piece of sushi right in front of you. I was really impressed with the quality and variety of fish. The signature rolls are creative and delicious. I had the Geisha Gaze, this was my favorite roll. But if you’re looking for something truly special, go for the omakase, it’s a journey of flavors and textures that showcases the chef’s creativity. Their version of a Moscow mule was delicious too! Tomiko-san is an experience that I found yet in Wilmington. Try it out you won’t be disappointed!

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Tomiko San this weekend. We enjoyed every bit of our meal starting with the drinks. My husband had their take on a dirty martini (the name escapes me) and I had the cucumber shisojito. We both enjoyed these signature cocktails and moved on to cosmos to have with dinner. We had a mix of sushi and the sashimi/nigiri for dinner. We enjoyed every bite and we specifically can’t wait to have the Geisha’s Gaze again, this roll was absolutely delicious. The quality of all the fish was top notch. For dessert, we had their take on the espresso martini that included sake. We shared the miso caramel gelato with a square of sesame brittle and the apple yuzu sorbet. We loved both desserts as well as the martinis! So looking forward to the next time we go back!

The sashimi was excellent! I had to get a second helping of Chu-toro! "The Shōgun" roll was super flavorful. Jessica was a great bartender/server. Do yourself a favor and get the Ohmine sake, it is so delicious!

Google
Best sushi restaurant in Wilmington, easily. They are very sensitive to any allergies you might have as well! We really enjoyed sitting at the counter as we were able to talk to James as he was making our meal. Highly recommend this restaurant, we will definitely be back!

If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would! 12/10 recommend — this sushi spot is an absolute must-visit. The fish is incredibly fresh, the rolls are flavorful and creative, and the vibe is the perfect mix of cozy and modern. One of my favorite starters was the Sunomono Salad with octopus — light, tangy, and incredibly refreshing. The octopus was tender and perfectly marinated, making it a standout dish on its own. The miso soup here is also worth mentioning — authentic, comforting, and rich with umami flavor. You can tell it’s made the right way, not some watered-down version like you find at other places. And don’t leave without trying the espresso martini — unexpectedly one of the best I’ve ever had. Smooth, bold, and the perfect way to end (or start!) your meal. The staff is so welcoming, the food is next-level, and the experience is unforgettable. Whether you’re a sushi traditionalist or love bold rolls, this spot delivers every time. Just go — trust me.

Superb, authentic-style sushi in the old Grand Cru space. Expertly prepared sashimi, nigiri and rolls. Full bar and assorted beer. Reservations recommended.

Yelp
Made reservations online through OpenTable. This new restaurant used to be grand cru. There is indoor seating, including seating with the chef making sushi kind of in front of u (bar height). There is the old grand cru outdoor seating but didn't seem like they were using it and it wasn't an option on OpenTable. They said they didn't have any high chairs yet, but they ended up borrowing 2 high chairs from another restaurant for us. All of the seafood is currently shipped overnight from Japan. Eventually, they would like to have some local sources. We ordered miso soup, Baltimore sushi, Shogun sushi, Sake (Scottish salmon) nigiri (2 pieces), and Chicken Teriyaki. Everything was flavorful and fresh. I would order all of these again. I would suggest getting both an entrée and sushi or more than one sushi roll order to make it a filling meal. My baby and toddler both immensely enjoyed the torched jumbo lump crab salad topping from the Baltimore sushi. I loved the Shogun sushi with the crunchy ground Chicharron topping and the touch of spiciness from the fried garlic chili oil. The chicken teriyaki with the homemade teriyaki sauce was finger licking good. Chicken had crispy skin. Loved eating everything with the white rice. Whether you order nigiri or as sashimi, both are the same price and both come as two pieces. Nigiri his fish over rice or sashimi is just the fish by itself. Sake drink menu was interesting. We tried the sake Hoyo Sawayaka Summer Breeze Junmai, which was good, a little fruity tasting, but not overly sweet. Dessert options were miso caramel gelato, yuzu gala apple sorbet or lychee sorbet. The yuzu gala apple sorbet was refreshing, slightly tart, and sweet. It was a perfect small amount to share with my partner and toddler. The staff and manager were nice, welcoming. Our waitress Kaylee was wonderful, patient.

Yelp
Exceptional sushi, very limited menu (from your usual Japanese place) very good service and friendly all around...high end on prices, so bring your big adult wallet!!!

Yelp
Overpriced with nothing to hang its hat on. Tuna app was fishy, Baltimore roll was dry and not terribly flavorful. On the other hand the salad and salted caramel ice cream were good.
