Best New Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Prolific North Carolina restaurateur Giorgios Bakatsias continues his coastal expansion with Tomiko-San in Lumina Commons. The restaurant specializes in sushi and traditional Japanese dishes, including chicken teriyaki, pork donburi, and Japanese curry. For sushi, there’s a la carte options for snapper, tuna, scallop, sea urchin, and more, along with signature rolls like the Baltimore (cucumber, lettuce, scallion, jumbo lump crab salad, ponzu, and avocado crema) and the Shogun (spicy salmon and mirin glazed carrots rolled in chicharron crumbs and topped with crispy garlic chili oil). The omakase service is available at the bar by reservation only." - Matt Lardie

We went for a sake pairing event. The food was divine, the chef went over each dish wonderfully. This is my first experience with a chefs menu in Wilmington, and let me tell you they blew it out the water! Each dish was paired with a unique sake that went beautifully with each dish. The reason I gave 3 stars instead of 5 is because the event was supposed to be prepaid, at least that is what was stated when I purchased the reservation. We stayed an extra 20 minutes after they finished the closing speech. There was no talk of checks or tipping, so we got up and left. To find out the next day that they charged my card after and chose their tip which was almost 30%. The service was wonderful and I most definitely would have tipped but since there was no talk of payments/checks I thought it was included in the original payment. I’ve never heard of a restaurant choosing tips either, especially when nothing was stated on the event when reserving. I emailed and got no response which is why I changed my review. So because of this I will not be back.

My wife and I stumbled upon this place when looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary, and what a joy that we did! Our server, Andrea, was attentive, friendly and wonderful. Our drinks were great, we both tried one of their signature cocktail and both were inspired and flavorful. We decided to order off the omakase menu, and the chefs' creation truly blew us out of the water! I've eaten a lot of sushi in my day, and this might still have been some of the freshest and best nigiri and sashimi I've ever experienced, and the specialty roll was inspired. 100% will be back, this is going to be our new #1 sushi spot in Wilmington!

Such a fun date night spot! This place is a 10/10! Everything we ordered was super fresh, portions were perfect. Their cocktail menu was very, very unique. The manager introduced us to a delicious Sake that has now become one of our favorites! Everything was super clean, attention to detail is definitely there. We can’t wait to come back to this beautiful establishment!

Everyone should try out this place, it's really good! First off, the vibes are immaculate - my favorite atmosphere of any of the sushi places in Wilmington. Subdued lighting, quiet, but with a great sushi bar if you want that experience. Atmosphere 5/5 Food, very good. I had salmon roe and eel nigiri, plus a spicy tuna and a futomaki roll - all excellent. A tablemate had the miso soup, which he reported was divine. We shared the two desserts, the apple cider sorbet and the sesame caramel gelato, and they were SO GOOD. Seriously, go just for these desserts if nothing else, some of the best ice cream in Wilmington. My wife had the Donburi, which was tasty and more than enough to save some for tomorrow's lunch. Food 5/5 Service was perfectly fine, 4.5/5 Overall a great experience and I'll definitely be back.

Went with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner, we’re both big foodies and love trying new things. First, we got the worst table in the restaurant, right near the front door. Our server came to greet us with water, said “hi”, poured our water and left, which was a weird start. We get our first round of drinks and our starter very quickly, and it was very flavorful and beautifully cut so we were excited! We ordered several pieces of sushi and sashimi and two rolls to split. We waited over 45 minutes for our sushi to come out, and our waiter was chatting with someone for 25 of those minutes while we were waiting on water and a refill of our wines. Our server never once mentioned anything about the wait or any apology about our drinks. First, the quality of the fish is excellent. We had the blue fin toro and it was melt in your mouth delicious. Then onto the sweet shrimp and wagyu nigiri, the shrimp had no seasoning, and tasted like cocktail shrimp you would get at Harris teeter, and the wagyu was seared, but cold. It was also chewy and tasted more like a sirloin or a ribeye, and had no flavor whatsoever. The Wagyu was listed at “market price”, but two pieces came out to $25! Our two rolls to split were incredibly small and not flavorful at all. Our waitress asked if we were ready to order more, but we took the check instead. Even though we were still hungry, we didn’t want to wait another 45 minutes. All in all, I’ve had better sushi in several places around town, and while they do have some high quality items, the whole meal lacked flavor. We were so excited to try this place but were so disappointed it didn’t live up to our expectations. The worst part was the cost and the service. I would have had no problem paying as much as we did if the service was stellar, but I wouldn’t pay that amount for subpar food and service again. We spent $170 and left hungry, so we went next door to Portland Grill and had an appetizer and dessert to finish our anniversary. Overall, small portion sizes, lacking flavor, extremely unjustifiably high cost for the quality, and horrible service. Save your money.

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Tomiko San this weekend. We enjoyed every bit of our meal starting with the drinks. My husband had their take on a dirty martini (the name escapes me) and I had the cucumber shisojito. We both enjoyed these signature cocktails and moved on to cosmos to have with dinner. We had a mix of sushi and the sashimi/nigiri for dinner. We enjoyed every bite and we specifically can’t wait to have the Geisha’s Gaze again, this roll was absolutely delicious. The quality of all the fish was top notch. For dessert, we had their take on the espresso martini that included sake. We shared the miso caramel gelato with a square of sesame brittle and the apple yuzu sorbet. We loved both desserts as well as the martinis! So looking forward to the next time we go back!

The sashimi was excellent! I had to get a second helping of Chu-toro! "The Shōgun" roll was super flavorful. Jessica was a great bartender/server. Do yourself a favor and get the Ohmine sake, it is so delicious!

Tomiko-San is an absolute GEM!!! From the moment I walked in, I felt the warmth and hospitality that made the entire experience unforgettable. The atmosphere is inviting, beautifully curated, and immediately transports you. Every dish was bursting with flavor, fresh, vibrant, and thoughtfully prepared — you can taste the passion and authenticity in every bite. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and cared for, and their recommendations were spot on. I had the Lavender Bloom cocktail, Madai, Botan Ebi and Sui Mono and it was out of this world — perfectly balanced and truly memorable. Tomiko-San is not just a restaurant, it’s an experience. I will absolutely be back again and again! If you’re looking for food that delights all the senses and service that makes you feel like family, this is THE place. I would like to personally thank the incredible hostess who greeted us, Scotty M and Kyle C who provided the most incredible service that anyone can ask for!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!

Yelp
Made reservations online through OpenTable. This new restaurant used to be grand cru. There is indoor seating, including seating with the chef making sushi kind of in front of u (bar height). There is the old grand cru outdoor seating but didn't seem like they were using it and it wasn't an option on OpenTable. They said they didn't have any high chairs yet, but they ended up borrowing 2 high chairs from another restaurant for us. All of the seafood is currently shipped overnight from Japan. Eventually, they would like to have some local sources. We ordered miso soup, Baltimore sushi, Shogun sushi, Sake (Scottish salmon) nigiri (2 pieces), and Chicken Teriyaki. Everything was flavorful and fresh. I would order all of these again. I would suggest getting both an entrée and sushi or more than one sushi roll order to make it a filling meal. My baby and toddler both immensely enjoyed the torched jumbo lump crab salad topping from the Baltimore sushi. I loved the Shogun sushi with the crunchy ground Chicharron topping and the touch of spiciness from the fried garlic chili oil. The chicken teriyaki with the homemade teriyaki sauce was finger licking good. Chicken had crispy skin. Loved eating everything with the white rice. Whether you order nigiri or as sashimi, both are the same price and both come as two pieces. Nigiri his fish over rice or sashimi is just the fish by itself. Sake drink menu was interesting. We tried the sake Hoyo Sawayaka Summer Breeze Junmai, which was good, a little fruity tasting, but not overly sweet. Dessert options were miso caramel gelato, yuzu gala apple sorbet or lychee sorbet. The yuzu gala apple sorbet was refreshing, slightly tart, and sweet. It was a perfect small amount to share with my partner and toddler. The staff and manager were nice, welcoming. Our waitress Kaylee was wonderful, patient.

Yelp
My wife and I moved here from the SF Bay Area recently and - as good Californians - we love our sushi! We've tried 95% of the sushi restaurants around Wilmington and this is by far the best! First of all, freshness of fish and design of the menu options are paramount. All fish is flown in from Japan! It's great to have Japanese sushi and nigiri fish options. The menu options are great from rolls, to nigiri, to sashimi. Chef James is onto something and I think this place will be very successful. The service is very good and they have outdoor seating too. We loved the ambience when we walked in the door. One thing that we also liked, is that this restaurant is completely dedicated to the sushi experience - they're not trying to merge in Thai or Chinese food onto the menu. They're committed to their craft. My one complaint is that they don't have Japanese tea, specifically green tea. I know they're working on this but I think this is a miss, but something I could overlook because everything else was pretty exceptional. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We sat outside to celebrate a birthday. It was perfect! The waiter was attentive, friendly and helpful. The seaweed salad was so delicious with bits of mango. The rolls were so fresh and pretty. Don't miss the amazing gelato with sesame drizzle.....amazing!

Yelp
Overpriced with nothing to hang its hat on. Tuna app was fishy, Baltimore roll was dry and not terribly flavorful. On the other hand the salad and salted caramel ice cream were good.

Yelp
Exceptional sushi, very limited menu (from your usual Japanese place) very good service and friendly all around...high end on prices, so bring your big adult wallet!!!
