Best New Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Prolific North Carolina restaurateur Giorgios Bakatsias continues his coastal expansion with Tomiko-San in Lumina Commons. The restaurant specializes in sushi and traditional Japanese dishes, including chicken teriyaki, pork donburi, and Japanese curry. For sushi, there’s a la carte options for snapper, tuna, scallop, sea urchin, and more, along with signature rolls like the Baltimore (cucumber, lettuce, scallion, jumbo lump crab salad, ponzu, and avocado crema) and the Shogun (spicy salmon and mirin glazed carrots rolled in chicharron crumbs and topped with crispy garlic chili oil). The omakase service is available at the bar by reservation only." - Matt Lardie

Our first time there was all we hoped for. Got there a bit early to our table at the back near the bar. Todd was great with drink recommendations and headed straight to the kitchen to check on vegan options for my mom. Before our friends arrived, he already had a special meal mapped out for her. The tea service was beautiful and full or aromatic flavor. I loved the special ramen. Because who wouldn't love a blue crab broth, crabmeat and mushroom ramen, really? It was the perfect hearty meal on this cold evening. Everything about Tomiko-San was warm and inviting. This will definitely be a regular stop in our new hometown.

Wilmington’s first Omakase experience and it exceeded our expectations. We consider ourselves foodies and this restaurant is a must try for any sushi connoisseur. Chef Nash goes above beyond with his creations and his passion for sushi shines through the food. We were impressed with his homemade soy sauces and seasonings plus the presentation of each fish adds to the overall experience. Whether you’re at the sushi bar or at a table this is one of Wilmington’s top restaurants!

We went for a sake pairing event. The food was divine, the chef went over each dish wonderfully. This is my first experience with a chefs menu in Wilmington, and let me tell you they blew it out the water! Each dish was paired with a unique sake that went beautifully with each dish. The reason I gave 3 stars instead of 5 is because the event was supposed to be prepaid, at least that is what was stated when I purchased the reservation. We stayed an extra 20 minutes after they finished the closing speech. There was no talk of checks or tipping, so we got up and left. To find out the next day that they charged my card after and chose their tip which was almost 30%. The service was wonderful and I most definitely would have tipped but since there was no talk of payments/checks I thought it was included in the original payment. I’ve never heard of a restaurant choosing tips either, especially when nothing was stated on the event when reserving. I emailed and got no response which is why I changed my review. So because of this I will not be back.

My wife and I stumbled upon this place when looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary, and what a joy that we did! Our server, Andrea, was attentive, friendly and wonderful. Our drinks were great, we both tried one of their signature cocktail and both were inspired and flavorful. We decided to order off the omakase menu, and the chefs' creation truly blew us out of the water! I've eaten a lot of sushi in my day, and this might still have been some of the freshest and best nigiri and sashimi I've ever experienced, and the specialty roll was inspired. 100% will be back, this is going to be our new #1 sushi spot in Wilmington!

My husband and I ate at Tomiko-San 1/2/26. I ordered the chicken Sui Mono (chicken broth based soup) and chicken teriyaki. I developed a terrible case of salmonella food poisoning later that evening. My husband did not eat any of my food and did not get sick. I have had food poisoning a few other times in my life from other restaurants but never this bad. It has lasted over 2 days, most recently easing up/disappearing for several hours and then returning. I called and reported to the health department. Beyond getting food poisoning, I would not recommend this restaurant for various other reasons. I consider myself to have a very low bar when it comes to liking food. And I can say, I did not like the chicken teriyaki. The chicken was visually very unappealing and did not taste good. The rice tasted like a dirty kitchen/mixing bowl. The food is incredibly expensive. They do not offer soy or rice paper as an alternative to seaweed. And they do not offer any specialty vegetarian sushi rolls.

We love Tomika-San. We typically come once a week and sit at the back bar. Todd knows our drink order and has it practically waiting for us by the time we walk to the back. Fish is fresh, our order is perfect every time, the manager always greets us with a smile, and we have never had a bad experience. The sushi is excellent, the menu is limited so everything they make is *chefs kiss* and the service is impeccable. We have tried several sushi restaurants and this is by far the best in Wilmington.

We absolutely love Tomiko San. The sushi is consistently fresh and beautifully prepared, and even the rice stands out — you can tell they took time to source from a high-quality supplier. Sitting at the counter is our favorite; the chef is friendly, thoughtful, and a joy to watch. The Geisha roll is our go-to, but every dish we’ve tried has been excellent. Add in the beautiful ambiance and it’s easily the best sushi spot in Wilmington.

Everyone should try out this place, it's really good! First off, the vibes are immaculate - my favorite atmosphere of any of the sushi places in Wilmington. Subdued lighting, quiet, but with a great sushi bar if you want that experience. Atmosphere 5/5 Food, very good. I had salmon roe and eel nigiri, plus a spicy tuna and a futomaki roll - all excellent. A tablemate had the miso soup, which he reported was divine. We shared the two desserts, the apple cider sorbet and the sesame caramel gelato, and they were SO GOOD. Seriously, go just for these desserts if nothing else, some of the best ice cream in Wilmington. My wife had the Donburi, which was tasty and more than enough to save some for tomorrow's lunch. Food 5/5 Service was perfectly fine, 4.5/5 Overall a great experience and I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
My wife and I moved here from the SF Bay Area recently and - as good Californians - we love our sushi! We've tried 95% of the sushi restaurants around Wilmington and this is by far the best! First of all, freshness of fish and design of the menu options are paramount. All fish is flown in from Japan! It's great to have Japanese sushi and nigiri fish options. The menu options are great from rolls, to nigiri, to sashimi. Chef James is onto something and I think this place will be very successful. The service is very good and they have outdoor seating too. We loved the ambience when we walked in the door. One thing that we also liked, is that this restaurant is completely dedicated to the sushi experience - they're not trying to merge in Thai or Chinese food onto the menu. They're committed to their craft. My one complaint is that they don't have Japanese tea, specifically green tea. I know they're working on this but I think this is a miss, but something I could overlook because everything else was pretty exceptional. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Second visit was total opposite from our first visit. The food wasn't that great. Seaweed salad didn't have much flavor. Ramen is not listed on the menu, but they have a weekly rotation. Spicy Shrimp Ramen was the Ramen of the day. Shrimp and marinated egg were both good, but the broth was way too salty for consumption. The only good decent tasting dish was the Japanese curry. I didn't like the skin that was left on the thinly sliced sweet potato, which arguably, could have been cooked a little bit more. We ended up just getting everything to-go. And then to add offense, they did not have proper containers for the Ramen. So they had to be put in several "containers" that leaked everywhere, causing a big mess. It was many of the one cup cardboard like containers and foldable brown paper boxes. Pretty embarrassing visit. Not sure I'll come again, but if I do, I'll just stick to the sushi.

Yelp
Nigiri was excellent, everything else was mediocre. Def not worth the price paid. Service was slow.

Yelp
We sat outside to celebrate a birthday. It was perfect! The waiter was attentive, friendly and helpful. The seaweed salad was so delicious with bits of mango. The rolls were so fresh and pretty. Don't miss the amazing gelato with sesame drizzle.....amazing!

Bob N.

Yelp
Overpriced with nothing to hang its hat on. Tuna app was fishy, Baltimore roll was dry and not terribly flavorful. On the other hand the salad and salted caramel ice cream were good.

Yelp
Exceptional sushi, very limited menu (from your usual Japanese place) very good service and friendly all around...high end on prices, so bring your big adult wallet!!!
