The Best-Value Cheap Restaurants In East London

"A hearty plate of jollof rice with beans and plantain is always a good idea from this West African restaurant in Hackney Central. There are plenty of staples like efo-riro and ayamase stew on the menu at Tomi’s Kitchen and, if you’re going rice-heavy, just make sure you get a decent ladle of fried tomato and chilli sauce on top. Together they’re the perfect mix of savoury, salty, and spicy. A tenner or so will go far here but a bag is recommended too. If we come for lunch, we tend to leave with dinner as well." - team infatuation

I’m at times really weary about trying Nigerian foods at restaurants because I always compare them to my mum’s cooking (lol) but this is the first ever restaurant I give my endorsement. Food was banging!!! Here are the things we got: Meat pepper soup Gizzard Plantain Jollof rice with meat Chin Chin Beef Suya All were honestly deliciou!!!!!

The food here is of poor quality & sometimes smells like it's gone off or going off. The customer service is also very poor. One of the staff, who mostly serves me, is rude, never pleasant and she always overcharges me despite there being an actual price list advertised on the wall. The hygiene is very very poor. The kitchen does not appear to be clean & tidy. I once caught one of the staff using her bare hands to serve some plaintains I had ordered. Prior to taking my order, she had served another customer & had handled money & touched work surfaces but didn't bother to wash her hands or wear disposable gloves to serve my order. The ambience is always drab with an offensive lingering smell. I would have given zero stars if it was possible. I would not recommend this eatery.

I ordered some food from here for the first time today. It was the worst aya mashe I've ever had. It was extremely oily and they didn't even fry the oil till it was clear so it just smelt and tasted like palm oil. It was so red I thought it was stew at first. I will not be ordering from here again.

The Egusi here is really not up to par. If this was my first taste of Nigerian cuisine, I wouldn't be eager for more.

I had the pounded yam, okro soup and assorted meat. The assorted came with one piece of shaki, roundabout, kpomo and meat. The pounded yam and soup potion was very generous. The food tasted fresh like it was homemade. The spice level was just right. The Aunty that served me was very friendly and courteous. I definitely enjoyed my experience and I’d. E back and this time I wouldn’t forget to take pictures.

Overpriced, but was too hungry at that moment. 10 pounds for a small drumstick and 6 pieces of plantain and rice. Not sure if quality and quantity is worth that. Wont try African food again in a long time.
