The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"This tiny storefront restaurant next to a pawn shop in the Spenard neighborhood is always slammed, and there’s good reason. Tommy’s burgers do not disappoint — as evidenced by the fact there’s almost always a wait. The patties come griddle-smashed and seasoned with Cajun spices. The aloha burger, with teriyaki sauce, pineapple and grilled onions is a classic, as is the stella blue, with blue cheese and mozzarella in the pattie. There’s also a full menu of po-boys and cheesesteak sandwiches. Don’t miss the dessert case, where you’ll find Cajun delight, made with whipped cream cheese and pudding in a butter-pecan crust from the Double Musky Inn in Girdwood. Very limited indoor and outdoor seating." - Julia O'Malley

We stopped here for lunch after collecting our rental car from airport. Its 10 mins nearby. A bit of a 15 minute wait cos it was lunch time. Burgers are super good.

I am a long time customer of Tommy’s and usually I have loved everything about this establishment. The last 2 times I have purchased my favorite (Chicken Philly) there has been barely any meat. I even wrote them on their website and sent an email saying I was disappointed and no one ever even responded. The pics speak for themselves and although I love this place I can’t justify paying this much for what was received.

Google
Just amazing burgers and onion rings! We stopped in and had a great lunch! There is limited seating so we are in our car as did others but it was worth it! This burger is one of my favorite burgers ever so tasty and the I rings were awesome too!!

Google
Massive burger for what costs like a lot but I'm not from Alaska. Found this place on tiktok when I got here and was really craving a good burger so I finally got the chance almost 2 weeks later. Called to get pricing and was even told about weekly burger specials that come with fries. Regular menu burgers come by themselves. Definitely worth a try if you've never been or want a good burger!! Posting menu for prices and items.

Amazing burgers and friendly staff. A small and quaint burger stop you have to try when you’re in town

I had the great fortune of being able to go to Alaska for a friends wedding. During my time in Alaska I had a lot of great food but, at the end of the day there is something about a great burger that really satisfies! Tommy's Burger Shop is exactly that - a darn good burger! Tommy's is a small and very eclectic burger joint, the staff is very attentive even though they are (from what I could tell) really busy all the time. My Dad and I were simply in the mood for some regular cheese burgers but, after looking over the menu we we're both astonished to see that they had a Cajun Style Fired Shrimp Po-Boy which we could not turn down. We both settled on 2 Burger Stop Burgers and a Shrimp-Po Boy for desert. Once we ordered, and since we had no place to be we went out to the small patio and sat down awaiting our meals. To say we were ready to eat is a huge understatement at this point. First and foremost the pictures you see online do not do this burger justice, it is a massive patty and the Lettuce, Tomato, Onions and Pickles were extremely fresh. The burger itself was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. It can be hard to "rave" about a burger but- this one here deserves the hype. After scarfing down the burgers we turned our eyes to the Po-Boy... Knowing full well that there was no way in heck we would finish the whole thing, we split one of the half's down the middle and had at it. The flavor of the Po-Boy was spot on - there was a perfect crunch from the well prepared shrimp and and paired with the Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, and Fresh Lemon made it well worth every second (even though we barley could move from our seats). Needless to say, we kept the other half for later. So at the end of my sermon here, I just wanted you to know that Tommy's is a fantastic spot for a burger and I imagine if you had one of their specialties it would be amazing. So if you are in the area do yourself a solid, and stop on by! And, Tommy's keep doing your thing - it is just splendid!

Craving one again now lol! I went Sunday with my husband. He was raving about this place for awhile so when he asked me where we were going I picked Tommy’s. I generally like all burgers, I don’t discriminate but I have to say this was a really good one! Juicy, big portion. Love the fries. And the two ladies working there provided great service! I’m not sure their names but the lady with the lint dark hair who was working the till and the other one that was running food. She had her eyebrow pierced. Will definitely be back! Fun place. Looking forward to hitting this place up in the summer.

Yelp
Their original location and the best in my opinion. The food is always piping hot and tastes simply amazing. The Cajun seasoning on the fries makes them where you can't stop eating them. The food is pricey, but you get a large amount. The weekly special for $18 is where it's at, as you get the fries included, and I have not been able to finish both the burger and fries so far. Some of the weekly specials have been the best so far, which unfortunately means you cannot get them unless it's the special, as they are not on the standard menu. The staff is always friendly and takes your order within seconds of walking in after greeting you.

Yelp
I'm sad to have to do this, as Tommy's is somewhere I've been going to for years, but last night's experience was so disappointing, that i don't want to go back anymore. I have literally NEVER had anything from Tommy's that I left most of, but I did last night. Normally I leave some fries as I'm too full to eat more. Last night, i left over half the meal, because it was awful. I ordered a Philly Cheese Steak, with Cajun Fries. When it came, the fries were almost cold, and the seasoning was erratic - some had been seasoned, some had no seasoning at all. The sandwich however, was hotter than the surface of the sun, and i couldn't eat it. When something is THAT hot, I can tell that it's been microwaved, an opinion that was confirmed by how tough and chewy the bread was. This was not a fresh piece of bread, it had definitely been microwaved, (i know this from microwaving bread rolls at home, how they get if you go a few seconds over) and judging by the internal temperature of the filling, i think the entire thing was microwaved. Because the bread was so tough and chewy, the filling just squished right out of it when i attempted to take a bite. My husband ordered the Hot Chef Salad, which normally comes with 2 pots of salad dressing, he specified at the counter, that he wanted Ranch. His salad came without any dressing, and when he asked one of the girls who were walking around, she seemed surprised, and brought him 1 of the small pots of Ranch. We have, between us, had this salad dozens of times - IT HAS ALWAYS COME WITH 2 POTS OF DRESSING because it's a big salad. The price of food here is not cheap, and i don't appreciate disappointing food on date night, so i doubt I'll return. Whether they were having an off day, or training a new chef, i can't say, i wasn't made privy to such information. The lady at the counter staff was as good as always though.

Yelp
Went there two days ago & I was standing there for at least 15 minutes behind a guy and the cashier skipped me and helped the four guys behind me. My order was a pickup order and that was unacceptable. The Philly was mediocre and the bread was almost the re warmed it up wasn't fresh and the fries was trash!
google avatar

Yelp
Do not order DoorDash form this place. Ordered a burger and chicken strips in which the photos clearly show fries in them but got no fries. 40 bucks for a burger and strips is insane. Don't waste your money. Very average food
google avatar

Yelp
Very good burgers. Definitely a place to stop if in Anchorage. 4 tables inside a few outside so generally "to go."
google avatar

Shirin P.

Yelp
We sat outside as we devoured our huge burgers. We went in a little later in the day, between lunch and dinner, so I don't know if they're typically busy or not but we went right to the counter with no wait and the food came quickly. We visited in the summer and were able to sit outside, but I don't know how they accommodate people in winter when you can't really use the patio. The inside of this joint is tiny but the portions are huge!

David W.

Yelp
I went there yesterday and while standing at the register to order a girl came up and said something and started cleaning a short fridge by the register. About 4 or 5 minutes later she finished cleaning and asked what I wanted and l said well four minutes ago l wanted to order food but I had to watch you clean, she said l told you l would be there. l said you should have taken my order first as the customer pays your salary and she told me l could leave as she was refusing servic, and that is the last time I will go there.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The neighborhood and look of it from the outside could easily give you second thoughts but it was the highlight of our brief stay in Anchorage! It has eclectic decor that is immaculately clean and gives it a fun whimsical feel. Almost every burger item is Cajun seasoned but not spicy. I had the Stella Bleu Burger and I don't think it could be replicated anywhere else, it was delicious. The fries were crisp and seasoned perfectly. I don't think I'll be back to Anchorage but if I am I'll be sure Tommy's Burger Stop is at the top of my list of things to do/places to visit.

Yelp
The halibut strips tasted no better than frozen grocery store food, and the petite burger reminded me of something from Carl's Jr. The fries were decent, but unfortunately, they were cold. Overall, the food is overpriced and overrated--I wouldn't recommend it! This building also needs better ventilation according to my Aranet monitor.

Tricia R.

Yelp
This has been one of our favorite burger places in the past, but the last time we ordered we were not thrilled. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger, kids burger, and a mushroom Philly, small order of onion rings and an order of fries. It was $80 and the tip was a mandatory 10%.. the Philly was completely soggy with grease. The burgers were good, but for a family of 3 to get burgers for $80 we will not be going back. Super bummed.
google avatar

Yelp
Tommy's is a hole-in-the wall that serves delicious Cajun spiced burgers and other sandwiches at good prices. It is tiny with maybe three tables, so don't plan on dining in unless you are prepared to get chummy with the stranger next to you. But the onion rings are great, fries are tasty and the burgers are delicious. Prices are affordable. This place is a keeper!

Yelp
This is my favorite burger stop in Anchorage. Hands down. Their a cajun style burger joint that goes out of their way to make sure that the food is to your liking. The spices that they put on the fries and the burgers are a combination of a lot of different cajun spices. The fries are one of the many things that keep me coming back because they're so addicting. I still have yet to try their Po-Boy and a few other items on their menu. The burgers are pretty hearty and filling. My favorite is their mini stop burger. It's one of the smallest ones that they have. The service is very attentive and professional. The ladies that work there are really nice and will make sure your needs are taken care of. The building itself is pretty small, so there's very very limited seating inside...but the vibe is packing! You get the sense that their affiliated with the local roller derby scene because of their style and decorations (because they are). You can tell they love Alaska and they show it with pride! Overall, it's a fun place to enjoy a burger at, especially during the summer time when they have seating on the outside.

Yelp
Had a delicious meal here. My husband and I picked up some burgers on a Friday night- they were very busy but the food was cooked to perfection! The burger was juicy and perfectly seasoned. The fries were crispy and delicious. We also got an order of the halibut and we were not disappointed-the fish was crispy and perfectly cooked. For dessert we ordered a Cajun delight and the carrot cake-both were amazing and some of the best desserts we have ever ordered. We will be back!

Yelp
Best Burger in Anchorage!!! I work up here about 3 weeks every month, and the day before I fly up my mouth starts watering in anticipation of my inevitable stop at this wonderful spot. It's small, eclectic, and "Spenard weird" (a good thing!) The burgers are cooked to perfection, loaded with fresh condiments, and very fairly priced. Great be it a try.....you will be bac

Yelp
This business is very constant in their food, flavor and taste! Their service is always on point and the setting is real laid back. My family and I have been to both shops and we love it! We always recommend this burger deliciousness!!!

Yelp
I will just throw my 5 star rating for this place on top of all the other ones that they got. This place is amazing. Their food is life changing. They do not have indoor dining. They only have outdoor patio dining and carryout. Either way, I recommend you save some time and call your order in ahead. They have an adequate sized private parking lot and upon first look, the place does not look like much. However, that could not be anymore far from the truth. They have some exotic burgers and shake choices and I love exotic so I ordered an Aloha Burger and a Fruity Pebbles shake. I called my order in and got it to-go. It took about 30 minutes for my food to be ready. And they do something that I have never seen before to let you know your order is ready. They write your name on a big white board in the window. I guess so that people are not crowding inside, since it is kind of small in there. The staff there is very friendly, courteous, and helpful. They were really awesome. The food did not disappoint. It was very tasty. I would put the burger up there with the best of them. The shake was awesome too. I am definitely going to try and make it back here. Especially after seeing their Donut Burger that was not on the menu. I highly recommend checking out this local staple. They have grade A service, top notch food, and an amazing atmosphere. Over 500 people cannot be wrong. This place is amazing. You will not be dissapointed.

Yelp
A solid burger spot that boasts a vast menu of different burger varieties. Needless to say, I got the aloha burger, which has pineapple and bbq sauce. It was pretty good, nothing that stood out, but definitely hits burger craving. Just a delicious amalgamation of flavors that satisfies!
google avatar

Yelp
Tommys, a local favorite, a Spenardian staple! Don't forget to lock your car. Tiny interior. Always busy. It's best to call-in your order ahead. I've eaten inside, outside on the patio, and I've taken orders to enjoy at home. The Spenard burger, philly cheese melts, and cheeseburger po boys, are a few of our regular orders. Tommy, is the son, of the owners of Double Musky Restaurant. His family's' popular desserts (pies) are known to be available for purchase. Highly recommend Tommy's for delicious quality burgers and sandwiches.
google avatar

Pete V.

Yelp
Blue cheese burger but ask them about their make it spicy special (can't remember what it's called). Chef's kiss!
google avatar

Abigail W.

Yelp
Fun, eclectic spot in Spenard! The interior is small with 3 tables that seat up to four people each, but they open up fairly quickly. We ordered and hung out for about 20 minutes, right as we sat our food was ready. The burger was delicious with great toppings. All the choices looked delicious! Ended up going with the western style burger with homemade onion rings on top. Super tasty. The only negative was that the bun was a little on the dry side. Will definitely be back to try the cheesesteaks!
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
Awesome lunch stop! Visiting the area from Texas and was looking for lunch stop with the family. This place hit the spot. burger buns had the perfect level of toasting to still be soft but have a slight crunch on the edges. Great seasoning on the patties and fresh toppings. And the fries?? *Chef's kiss* Loved that Cajun seasoning on them. Definitely recommend visiting!
google avatar

Kenzie D.

Yelp
On this young summer afternoon we feasted. The exquisite double double with bacon, pickles, onions, peppers & cheese while drizzled with bbq sauce made for an elite lunch. The fries were just as good with top tier seasoning the workers were pretty dope as well 5/5! Even with the pickiest eater of all time in the car all positive things were said about this place.
google avatar

Patricia H.

Yelp
By far the best cheeseburger I've had in Anchorage. I've always said, go to the small hole in the wall for some good food. I got the basic cheeseburger with bacon, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, and tomato's. So juicy and delicious It's a little out of the way from where I live but it's worth the trip every time.
google avatar

Madai P.

Yelp
I'm sorry but it's just not "it" for me. The coziness inside was nice for me and hubby. The onion rings are decent, fries are basic. We had the Aloha burger and the Gunner burger. Gunner was tastier by far. Aloha burger was a sad fail for me. I had high hopes for this place but they didn't deliver in my opinion. Another thing I noticed was burgers were well done which is not my preference. Honestly burger fi or smash burger waaayyyy tastier!!

Mark C.

Yelp
Bought a burger. They handed me a hamburger that was singed brown on the outside and completely raw on the inside. I took it back. They cooked me another hamburger. I spent the next 24 hours non stop on the toilet. No thank you and never again. Btw, I don't do reviews unless it's an epic fail.
google avatar

Rhett F.

Yelp
Very cute and small, but not the first place I would recommend. If you want a cozy space and a decent burger it's not a bad choice to support this local business.

Scott C.

Yelp
This is a review for the new location off Dimond. I just went to the soft opening and it was fantastic! Tommy's has always been my number 1 burger joint but getting to eat inside is a rarity given the lack of space. The interior of the new place looks great and the food is absolutely on point! They're still trying to staff up but they're off to a great start, loved the service! I'll definitely be visiting again soon!

Yelp
Super slowly working our way through the must haves of Anchorage and Tommy's was way up there on that list. After deciding the night before that burgers were the answer to that age old question of 'whats for dinner Thursday night' we gave Tommy's a call. The lady manning the phone was polite, cheerful, and informative - giving us the estimate of 15 minutes for our order to be ready. We headed out the door, got there about 12 minutes later to discover our name was on the whiteboard! They have a nice and simple system of putting the names of those whose orders are ready up on a whiteboard in the front window, definitely effective! After we got the order we rushed home, the smells absolutely took over the cabin of my truck - a plus I think. The burgers were juicy, well seasoned, and come with a great selection of fixings for us at least. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo and onion... not much else needed! The buns held up nicely, and both the potato roll and sesame seed bun were great! The fries were a bit of a let down, super duper salty. My wife who loves salt maybe more than me felt they were a bit much, although ketchup made them a lot more palatable. They weren't very crisp either, but this is nitpicking - we still ate them all up, although knowing what we know now we'd probably opt for a small fry to share and not a large! The double musky? Idk what it is, but there's meringue, brownie, pecans(I think?), wedged out in pie form and it was delicious way to end the meal. I'll be back to work my way through the menu, shrimp po-boy I've got my eye on you!

Yelp
When I travel I try to visit the places that most tourist don't go. I found Tommy's Burger stop today and was so happy I did. Very unassuming spot with a great location and super friendly staff. When I walked in, the gal behind the counter asked if I had ever been and gave me a quick rundown of the menu, shared some specials and made it really easy on ordering. As I sat there and waited for my food which didn't take very long, I heard a gentleman taking phone orders with absolute appreciation and graciousness for every single call that came in. The staff were polite not only to the guests but to one another as well. You could tell that they were like family to one another. The burger and onion rings were really good. Ordered the burger "The Spenard Way" which is made with an egg. Do yourself a favor and just do it.

Yelp
This place makes the best burgers in the world. The service is always run by this witty group of women that make you feel like your part of a club that you are really not cool enough to be apart of. They are so kind. The environment is hip, it feels like a classic burger stop. I want to name my first son "Tommy" because of this place.
google avatar

Carmen L.

Yelp
I was really excited to try Tommy's Burger Stop, especially because holes in the wall are usually pretty good. Overall, I wasn't blown away by Tommy's. I had the Mini Stop and it tasted alright, nothing special, not even a special house sauce or anything. It comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and cheese. I also had the onion rings and they were okay--lots of breading and not much onion to them. I'm glad I stopped at Tommy's but I don't think I'd go out of my way to eat here again. Plenty of parking for this hole in the wall. Four tables available in the patio.
google avatar

Karl A.

Yelp
I had just gotten off the plane and I needed food. Tommy's was the recommended first stop. We called in our order from the parking lot per the instructions. When the order was ready, they posted our name on the board. I had the Papa D Burger and onion rings. The burger was amazing. It was bursting with flavor and was cooked perfectly. It had the right balance of heat, where it was flavorful, but not burn your mouth kinda hot. Totally worth the stop! This is the classic old-school burger joint I love!
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Well, I updated from a 4 to 5 because of the great service. Really enjoyed my second trip back today. Cheesy fries, great Philly cheese sandwich and bottled Coke. And every dessert offering is absolutely great.
google avatar

Carol R.

Yelp
Holy guacamole. The black bean burger made with papa D toppings, add fried egg was absolutely amazing. The staff provided awesome service and super friendly. Will definitely recommend this little hole in the wall gem to everyone!

Monika H.

Yelp
Great burgers and service in a fun hole in the wall kind of way. Burgers and fries were both great. I would go back.
google avatar

Karla M.

Yelp
Fast. Fun. Simple. Yet a lot of menu options. I went with the Bacon Cheeseburger and side of Cajun seasoned fries. They were so good. I got the lettuce, tomato, onions and I asked for extra pickles, on the burger. It was perfect. Since it was Mother's Day I got myself a treat for afterwards, a Cajun (something) Pie. LOL It had a shortbread crust with pecans in the crust, and a cream of some sort, with chocolate pudding and whipped cream on top, sprinkled with chopped pecans. It was very good. Not too sweet. Hit the spot. I really enjoy their burgers. I think I'd like to dine in next time. :) I got my order to go.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
At Tommy's Burger Stop, prepare to indulge in generous portions and mouthwatering flavors that will leave you completely satisfied. Their extensive menu offers a delectable selection of nicely portioned delicious burgers that are guarantee to fill you up. When you go to Tommy's you'll leave with a fully contented belly.

Yelp
If you're looking for some bomb burgers or bomb phillys, I highly suggest coming here. They always have the best chili cheese fries I've ever tried in Alaska. So good! Tommy's also has the best milkshakes in anchorage. All the food is well worth the $ spent !! Excellent customer service too.
google avatar

Raven M.

Yelp
Generally I am not really a burger sort of woman. But Tommy's is something special! A very cozy atmosphere with a fun and eclectic atmosphere -get there early as limited seating and super friendly fun staff. The burgers are incredible- the veggie burger my fav! Tasty Onion rings and fries makes this my favourite place to go when super hungry!
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
Let me start by saying, whenever I visit Alaska Tommy's Burger Stop is a must stop (yes, the pun is intended). My go to is the Stella's Bleu Burger. Which I couldn't recommend more for any bleu cheese lover. The provolone bleu cheese mix they use adds a delicious flavor that stands out from any burger I've had before. The signature burger patty has a good flavor and texture and the bun is always fresh. Even though this is my go to, there is a multitude of options for any burger loving person. Outside the burger, their beer battered onion rings may well be my current favorite out of any place I go. Always cooked to a perfect golden brown, they bring back the taste of childhood. Most recently I tried their BBQ sauce which was unique. It had similar flavors of cocktail sauce on the front of the tongue (as well as a similar texture) but had a little zip on the back of the tongue, more signature of a classic BBQ sauce. I highly recommend giving it a try. The building itself sits just off Benson, and is rather small. It has three small tables with six total benches squeezed in the front. However, I think this is what makes Tommy's feel so special. It feels like a slice of Americana and a hidden gem of Anchorage. The hostess, one that I seem to always interact with, has always been a pleasant and sweet individual, exuding the vibes of a mother happy to help you figure out what you want for lunch or dinner!
google avatar

Terah L.

Yelp
This place is so small, the 3 tables that they have inside put the diners seated there right in the middle of the ordering action! They are always busy, they are always delicious, and if you didn't know they have a connection to the Double Musky in Girdwood! Can you say "Double Misky pie"!**If you are not a fan of close spaces and those in line staring at your food with "I just want a bite" puppy eyes then you simply call in your order. When your cook to order burger is complete they wrote your name on a dry erase board that faces the parking lot. Dash in and dine in your car or if you choose to wait to devour the cooked to perfection, juicy burger and hand cut fries that is up to you, I will say I admire dedication to to patience. Mmmmm so many tasty things! A must visit if you're in the Anchorage midtown area! ** if you don't know what Double Musky pie is, it is a game over, mic drop, slice of awesomeness that actually has saltine crackers in the crust! Don't deprive yourself, indulge in all of the delicious goodness that Tommy's Burger Stip is!

Yelp
I'm new to Anchorage and on a quest to find the best burger place here. For the first time in 34 yrs, I've had a burger that had a crust on the patty, seasoned perfectly. It's very rare to find! I had The Spenard, with the fried egg. The fries were excellent as well. It will start my Top 10 list at the top. For comparison, the 'Big O' at Otto's Cafe in Pittsburg, KS was the last place that had the crust on the patty. It's something to behold!

Ethan J.

Yelp
The burgers are SO GOOD, went here again last night and got the Bacon Cheeseburger and oh my... amazing. Pretty fast at getting your food and amazing service.

Yelp
What cool little place with so much character. We were looking for a good burger place in Anchorage and came across a Reddit with a ton of people recommending this place, some saying that "if you suggest anywhere else is better, you're lying" so we decided to try it out. Super friendly staff and amazing burgers that hit the exact spot we needed it to. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Tommy's Burger Stop has definitely exceeded my expectations. The burgers are absolutely amazing. Juicy, buns are Devine; everything just complimented each other very well..making it a very delicious burger. The staff is very friendly and genuine. Gives the whole comfortable "home" feeling, which unfortunately is hard to come by these days. I should've placed the order ahead of time because there was a little bit of a wait. Though, completely worth it and very understandable. It gave me the opportunity to admire the interior throughout. Overall..I had a great experience here. In an odd way it reminds me of a great cafe in Manitou Springs, Co. Anyways, the burgers are hands down one of the best..if not the best here in Anchorage. The service is awesome! Definitely making this place a regular burger stop. Side Note: Onions Rings (Mmm you won't regret it)

Yelp
The best burgers anywhere! I'm hooked on the Spenard Burger. I go there way to often lol. Usually a fifteen minute wait, just call ahead. I totally recommend Tommy's They have a great menu.

Yelp
Really excellent chicken Philly and fries. Add jalapeños to the Philly and it's perfection!

Yelp
Awesome burger and shake. Takes a while because they are so busy. Best burger I've had in a while.

Yelp
Best damn burger in town. Hands down! We were craving a good burger. Yelped it. And found this gem. Grabbed an order of onion rings and a couple of chocolate shakes too. Goodness. Our craving was definitely more than taken care of!
