First time coming here and they did not disappoint! The carne guisada is the best I've had in a long time. The tortillas are fantastic and fluffy. Bean and cheese with bacon was delicious, potato and egg with cheese were on point. Definitely recommend this place. The waitress was sweet and helpful. Love the artwork up around the place.

Google
We always get stale chips, the kind that just bend & are greasy. The puffy taco shell softens quickly after being served. We appreciate the welcome entering the front door! Salsas are good. Service, for most part, is good.

Google
2025 UPDATED: I STILL AGREE w/ my review!!! I’ve been coming to Tommy’s since 2009. I’ve tried many plates over the past 15 years. I’ve had the caldos, enchiladas, Barbacoa and my personal favorite: CARNE GUISADA w/ CHEESE. I just love the atmosphere and food.

Tony Specht

Google
UPDATE still has soft puffy powdery tortillas! Service was great. Timing was quick from the kitchen and always delicious. Do you like "brown gravy" carne guisada? This is your place. Always judging on tortillas and these make the grade.

Google
I enjoy the daily lunch specials - the quality of the food, the quantity (food portions), and they absolutely have the best iced tea in San Antonio. The entire staff including the manager and all the waitresses & the cashiers are all so friendly and helpful. I sure can’t wait for Maria to come back. She is my absolute favorite waitress there. I don’t even have to give her my order, she already knows what it is and is always greets me with a huge smile. If you haven’t tried Tommy’s on Wurzbach, give them a try. You won’t be disappointed. You will be back for more.

Google
Chose this spot due to good ratings and location. Authentic Tex-Mex with home made corn tortillas, tasty fresh salsas and some of the best picadillo meat I’ve had. Most of the staff is Spanish speaking which cause a bit of a barrier when I ordered and it came out as a to-go. Not a big deal. I didn’t love their chips which came in handy when I didn’t eat 2 baskets before my food showed up. Plenty of parking and seating. Very clean.

Eduardo Gudino

Google
Very pleasantly surprised of the quantity and the quality of the food, although the tortillas were little fat and a little too tough, but still a good consistency and flavorful, not allowing the meat to have any kind of blowout. $18.42 for three tacos, two with cheese and a coffee! I don’t know if that’s why they were only four tables in the restaurant Occupied😳 I made a comment to someone in the restaurant that I knew that will back in 20 years from now and say remember, we can get three tacos with cheese and a coffee for almost $20🤣😂🤣

Foodie Time

Google
I use to love tommmys I thought they had the best carne guisada but I was so disappointed and then the extra 2.00 for avocado and to get slithers is upsetting. The sauce was all over the outside of the tacos it was a mess. The waitresses were rude. Not enough seating for to go orderers

Yelp
The service ,food and ambiance were spot on ! The wait staff was attentive and polite. Food was delicious and plentiful . Restaurant was clean

Yelp
Disappointing... Seeing as I'd been dying g to check them out for a bit now... Started out with almost $9 for 2 egg white & bacon tacos. But I thought ok... I opened bag grabbed taco removed foil to see that they use Disgusting either velvets or American cheese!!! That was the COMPLETE STRIKE OUT!!! Terrible! Threw both away!!! That is way too AMERICAN for this San Antonian! Cheddar is DEFLY BETTER! Or rather the BEST!

Valerie L.

Yelp
I ordered the Chicken Puffy Taco. It was ok. Not the best but decent. The Chicken was dry the taco was "ok". I've had better. Most puffy tacos are nice and crispy, these were more rubbery and bland and aren't they supposed to come with yellow cheese, these had white cheese... not what I expected.

Yelp
Ordered two chorizo and egg tacos and two carne guisada with cheese. The carne guisada wasn't bad but when I unwrapped the chorizo and egg tacos the tortillas were orange from all the grease. That's super disgusting and immediately my appetite went away.

Yelp
So, I'm from San Antonio but live in the Daytona area now. Because I miss breakfast tacos and all-around Tex-Mex food, Tommy's is the first place I go to when I land in San Antonio. I very much enjoy their carne guisada, especially on their homemade tortillas. I personally like their salsa verde more than their red one, but that's just me. The atmosphere of the place is very family friendly and the staff is always nice and friendly and quick. I've taken a few people here who have never been and they have said they've gone back a few times because the food is really good. The flavors are excellent and pricing is on point. Tommy's has a great product and I ever get a chance to get any of their recipes, I would guard them with my life.

Yelp
So it's been a while since I've had Tommy's so i had a craving for it but everything went wrong. It took way too long for my order to be ready even though it's only three tacos and a tea. Anyways i get my order after verifying my name twice. Every taco was wrong and no straw in my bag. Just very frustrating, i had no time to go back
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best Tex-Mex restaurants around. Fresh flour tortillas, chips and salsa are very good. Old San Antonio Special is a great choice for big appetites ( see photo). Prices are very reasonable with a friendly staff.
google avatar

Anna Marie S.

Yelp
Got 2 bacon & egg with extra cheese, 1 potato & egg, and 1 bean & cheese. You call in your order and wait in line until you get to the front door, not the best setup. The line blocks several parking spots, and exiting is a bit of a challenge. A worker asked for my name, went inside, then came back out with a bag with my order. She took my card and took my food back inside as well. She didn't bring the food or my card (and receipt) back until after she brought the food for the car in front of me. Kind of strange thing to do.

Yelp
Stopped in here one weekday for lunch... this place was packed at lunch time and people kept shuffling through for carryout too! They have pretty friendly and helpful service, which is always nice. Their menu is standard and very reasonably priced. I tried puffy tacos for the first time and they were great! The tortilla that was fried was perfect, not too crunchy to where it would fall apart, just perfect! The meat in the beef was decent, but the meat in the chicken one was bland. Their nachos are unique, as they are individual tortilla chips with each one topped with meat, etc. Salsas was nice - spicy and fresh! Overall, I liked Tommy's and can see returning!
google avatar

Erica V.

Yelp
Always a hearty and welcoming experience. You definitely get the biggest bang for your buck on everything on the menu! Texas taco staples and homemade style tortillas are hands down the best quality and the reason I'll never be skinny! The staff treats everyone like a regular and they keep calm even in the busiest times! The food is always consistent and goodness for the tummy!

Yelp
I picked up a To-go order, then when I got home this is what I got. Not sure who approved this Country and egg taco. This is horrible!

Yelp
Breakfast, lunch this is the spot to be at! There was about a 15 min wait but not bad considering it was a Sunday. The hostess had us seated within that time frame and brought us our drinks, our waitress was friendly and never let our drinks go empty. I had 2 tacos and the flour tortillas were so fluffy and delicious. The barbacoa was juicy and full of flavor definitely some of the best I've tried. Parking is a little snug but do able. Definitely will be back !!
google avatar

marco a.

Yelp
Good food all around... Like the barbacoa tacos and the migas... you will not be disappointed...

Gloria M.

Yelp
The parking lot is small. They put a table by the window; the person behind me couldn't get out. The menudo was good

Yelp
**For this review and more follow my insta @dish_360 The Good: I love Tommys I'm a big fan of their carne guisada with cheese. If you're looking for a soup their menudo is a good choice too.Serving sizes are normally pretty generous and they've recently completed renovations to offer more spacious accommodations. . The Bad: We tried the lengua and I wasn't in love with it. The sauce didn't have much flavor to offer. In all fairness, it's the only thing I've eaten there that I didn't enjoy. I've been here several times and on occasion food gets served colder than it should be. It's always rectified but those inconsistencies keep it from being a 5 for me. Not to be picky but when you're hangry and you have to wait to get your stuff warmed or remade it kinda hurts The Aftermath: I love super complex meals but it's nice to have familiar comfort food from time to time. If you enjoy tacos I highly recommend this place. The servers are typically very friendly and the food is great. Expect to leave FULL. **For this review and more follow my insta @dish_360

Yelp
Tommy's is one of my favorite go to Tex-Mex restaurants in town. Their food is solid from top to bottom and hey, who doesn't like barbacoa and big red. On this occasion, I stopped in for breakfast and ordered the juevos rancheros (scrambled) with a side of carne guisada and corn tortillas. The order came out fairly quickly and looked appetizing. The eggs were scrambled nicely, the ranchero sauce was zesty, the potatoes were nice and crispy and the beans were seasoned well. The corn tortillas that came with the order were larger and thicker than most. It would be nice if they were a little bit thinner but that's just me. Our server was attentive and friendly and since we beat the morning rush we made it in and out in about 30 minutes. Needless to say, I'll be back to Tommy's and I do recommend this place to anyone craving some good Tex-Mex. Please note: the picture I attached shows the pepper I added after it was served to me. It was not brought out of the kitchen that way and I didn't want anyone to assume they use that much pepper. It is just my personal preference.

Yelp
So, the first time I came here was well over a year ago; I had breakfast tacos because I heard "that's what you do there". I can remember not being all that impressed. Don't get me wrong, the tacos were good, but for me...they fell into the "nothing to write home about" category of "good". It's tough to stand out in breakfast taco city, U.S.A. Since my first visit, the place has been renovated, and I'm glad. Pre-renovation, I just couldn't see myself going back...it was honestly about the decor and how cramped the restaurant felt before they extended that front wall.... Going in there today, the place is brighter and more colorful. I really like what they did with the renovation. Went about 7:30 this morning - the place was not very crowded. Service was fast and friendly. Opted for two breakfast tacos: one bacon and egg, and one potato, egg, and chorizo. They were both very good. I particularly liked the chorizo; it was flavorful without being too spicy. It was also nicely crumbled. The bacon was cooked perfectly to my liking - not a huge fan of overly crispy bacon...especially in a breakfast taco. Overall, I'll be going back. I need to try their lunch. Just a note - not a huge fan of the parking lot. First, I guarantee you the lot gets pretty full and tight when the place is packed. Also - saw no less than three cars this morning attempt to bypass the light at Wurzbach and Gardendale...by cutting through the lot behind Tommy's...and they really come zipping through that lot. Be careful.

Yelp
Another quest for breakfast tacos! I will say their selection and combinations were very unique. Small and limited seating. Homemade tortillas. Spicy green salsa. We ordered a bean & cheese, carne asada, egg & chorizo, and eggs and chicharrones tacos. The egg & chicharrones taco was weirdly excellent! I enjoyed it even without cheese, sour cream or salsa. The chorizo was not spicy and it was really good! Hubby ate his entire bean & cheese, but was not impressed with the carne. The waitress also rushed us out of this restaurant as well. I think San Antonio just aren't of the eat, talk, and enjoy mentality. We definitely felt hurried out of the place after we paid our bill.

Yelp
I stopped by Tommy's on Wurzbach for lunch today. My first time here, but certainly not my last. Within a minute of sitting down Luis stopped by my table to greet me and present a menu. He even helped me to decide on my meal. On his advise I ordered the crispy tacos, and it was an excellent choice. Three tacos with rice and beans. Sounds simple, but tasted like the cooks were making them for themselves. Thanks, Luis, for the recommendation and great service!

Yelp
Down right Guud!!!!!!!! Awesome Customer Service, Good Food and Great friendly staff. Try Tommy here on Wurzbach you will love it

Yelp
Go to place for fresh coffee and delicious breakfast for years. Handmade tacos, friendly service all the time.

Yelp
Food tasted weird, and low and behold I have had food poisoning going on 4 days ever since I ate here. It was the only thing I ate separate from my wife who is not sick. I will never go back here.

Yelp
A-okay breakfast tacos! My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast. The restaurant was packed with lots of people waiting for to-go orders. There is no hostess so you seat yourself and you pay at the counter on the way out. We probably waited 2-3 minutes for a table to open up. Our server was fast and efficient. I ordered two bacon and egg tacos on corn, and my boyfriend ordered menudo with a barbacoa +guacamole taco and Big Red. The food came out relatively quickly. My favorite part was probably the hot sauce - it has a great kick. The tacos were just okay, nothing to write home about. The corn tortillas were pretty flimsy and the egg in my second taco was rubbery and over cooked. My boyfriend said the menudo wasn't very traditional but it wasn't bad either. The ambience of this restaurant is kind of hole-in-the-wall and it could definitely use a face lift. The interior is pretty outdated and so is the furniture. Overall, our visit wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't amazing either. Just okay! Check it out if you're looking for a fast bite in the medical center.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The food is always amazing! Fast and friendly service! Homemade tortillas are the BEST!
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
HOLY CHEESE AND CRACKERS, BATMAN!! I have lived in the Medical Center for aprx 3years, and I have always wanted to come here. I was down the street dropping the truck off at W.T. and I hadn't eaten all morning so I thought what better reason could I have to stop by and grab some chow. The menu was decent, this is a diner kinda place so it's not meant to have a full on spread. I was hoping for a quesadilla but I looked the menu over 2 or 3 times so I am either blind or can't read lol I did not find it. So instead of asking like a respecting customer would I just ordered the "Chicken Fajita" plate w/corn tortillas....and OH MY STARZ lol it was delish, definitely hit the spot...it wasn't the best I ever had but still good. The meal made all of the missed opportunities worth it. Also the chips and salsa, red and green was superb..definitely better than some of the main chains in town. Carla was my waitress and she was so friendly and polite. I like how when a customer walks in nearly the whole staff gives the non chalant "Hi, welcome", it was nice to see.

Jessica John R.

Yelp
Can you find the meat?! I had a gravy taco :( Very disappointed again. Not only did our 3 garne guisada not have meat but they again messed up our order. This was our third time giving this location a try and they failed 3 times in a row. So sad, we PAY for our tacos they aren't GIVEN to us. #whereisthebeef smh

Tanya A.

Yelp
Great customer service and food! This particular location is small but still great.

Mark R.

Yelp
Great place great service but it's been a few times this week that it's freezing in here

Matt B.

Yelp
Tommy's is awesome about 10% of the time. 90% of the time you will wait on the world's worst drive thru only to get your order screwed up.

Ernest H.

Yelp
The owner doesn't turn the heater on, many loyal patrons are very cold at the DeZavala location. It was 48 inside
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us But yet again disappointed The food was cold My husbands Enchiladas cheese wasn't even melted His carne asada had no flavor My steak ala mexicana was cold Some of my meat was hard I always get the food you can't cook wrong But they did If you are going to run an establishment make sure you have proper help I think this place got comfortable gots it regulars And don't really care about new business
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
**Update** I recently came to Tommy's to pick up an early breakfast. This time I wanted to try a different item off their menu. Due to COVID-19 they are only doing carry out or drive thru. I decided to try their chilaquiles plate and was very impressed by their flavor and portion they put in their plate. I have many positive things to rave about- first, the amount of cheese oozing all over I'm sold because I'm that obsessed with cheese! It is bursting with flavor and the chilis. They put a very good portion of beans, potatoes, and chilaquiles that will have you full. I also ordered a sweet tea but it was hot and lacked an amount of ice. Service was great this time, they were very nice. This is now going to be my go-to plate!

Jessica B.

Yelp
Before Covid I went to Tommy's and loved it. Now we pick up and I'm pretty disappointed ordering a bacon and egg taco - biting into it and there are eggshells within the whole taco (there is more but I obviously chewed it, spit it out and wouldn't want to show that lol). Thankfully I ordered another taco which made up for it.
google avatar

Damnie K.

Yelp
Price is getting stupid high 4 tacos I spend 18 dollars but overall it's great place and there sweet tea always good
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
Was very disappointed, I would love to come here but then had me waiting 30 min for my order that was stil not placed in drive-through, it was also only for 4 tacos
google avatar

Tina F.

Yelp
I ordered a Caldo de Pollo. I received my order in a timely manner....but the liquid was brown. I guess I'm used to the coloring from the chicken stock. The caldo had a bitter tart taste work beef flavoring. I do not add salt as I will use pico de gallo as my seasoning. I have never used as much salt as I did for that bowl. I decided to stay away from the juice as much as possible but it was absorbed in the vegetables. Chicken was extremely dry as well. Did not send it back. I filled up with the tortillas (which were very delicious). DO NOT ORDER CALDO DE POLLO unless you like dry chicken, and a tart beef taste for the broth (caldo).
google avatar

Artists W.

Yelp
These tacos are to die for ! They're so big and you can taste the seasoning in every bite ! If you come here try the Carne Gusisada w cheese!!! Love love love !!!!!!!!

D R.

Yelp
We've enjoyed breakfast here several times. Food is always warm and fresh. Staff is friendly and attentive even when the place is packed.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
So everybody has been telling us we need to try these tacos and they were right! My new favorite breakfast spot HANDS DOWN! Love their tortillas and their green salsa!
google avatar

Yelp
Tommy's is usually one of my go to places. Not today. Went in with some of my coworkers. I wasn't sure what I would order. I usually go for the carne guisada plate. As I'm sitting at the table a customer nearby is being served a bowl of menudo. That made my mind up. I order a bowl of menudo everyone else orders the carne guisada plate. A few minutes later the carne guisada plates are brought out and I'm told my menudo will be next. I sit. The waiter says it'll be right up. I sit. Everyone else is pretty much done with their food and still nothing. The waiter sees me and is about to tell me something. I motion to him to cancel my order. He comes to me and says there's 4 orders ahead of me or something like that. Everyone else is done so I tell him to cancel it. So I had chips for lunch today. No one ever mentioned there was no menudo or it was on back order. No one ever apologized. I don't think I'll be going back for a while.

Yelp
I've been living on the east coast for a few years now, and there's nothing I miss more about Tejas than REAL Mexican food!!! Well, my family too, but food! So the first place my sister took me to was Tommy's cos I really wanted some breakfast tacos. They did not disappoint! You can't beat homemade flour tortillas. Omg I could just eat those alone! I ordered two tacos. Bacon & egg and potato & egg. Both delicious! And their hot sauces are perfectly spicy . They have a Big Red special where you get I think 2 barbacoa tacos and a bottle of Big Red. I almost got it, but I'm super picky about my barbacoa. Who doesn't love Big Red tho?? Yumm! I would def go back the next time I'm in San Antonio. I miss homemade food that makes me think about being back home. They should ship me some tacos to Virginia! Lol
google avatar

Gloria S.

Yelp
The food was awesome, but my niece forgot her purse on the chair, we called immediately and they kept saying it wasn't there. They wouldn't even acknowledge that the waitress worked there. All we wanted were her car keys. $47 tip to not being able to talk to her! Will never eat there again!! Dishonest people!!
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
I thought this place might be a bunch of hype, but it was really good I had the beef flakes it was spicy and good I would come back, if it wasn't so crazy crowded
google avatar

Rose C.

Yelp
Well What Can I Say About The Famous Tommy's Hmmmm! Well IT'S GREAT FOR BREAKFAST But Not for lunch. The Service to sit always takes long but of course it's cause it's always packed (which is good). Anyway breakfast is always fantastic but this time I thought I should try the lunch and well to my surprise the enchiladas did not taste homemade. Our food was cold but still good. Customer service was good except some times tables are open and some people don't get on the list and just walk in and sit at the empty tables! Which gets me upset cause hostess just lets them and doesn't tell them they need to get on list. But of course y'all need to try Tommy's when ever your in SA and Not in a hurry!
google avatar

Dennis S.

Yelp
Tommy's is definitely a San Antonio institute! It's also a rite of passage to dine on the pairing of barbacoa and big red soda. My several visits to this establishment have been consistently positive. The service is attentive and friendly. The decor is what a SA Mexican restaurant should be. Colorful walls, crowded tables and chairs, and Spurs memorabilia on the walls. The food is definitely the star of the show, though. The tortillas are fluffy and flavorful. They are not perfectly round machine-made store bought rubber tortillas here. And they are perfect for holding the delicious fillings of your choosing. My go to tacos are typically bacon egg and cheese, bean and cheese, and barbacoa with a side of avocado. I know, three tacos! But yeah, this place is that good. The prices, are reasonable for the tacos, but beware of the breakfast plate prices. Nearly $8 for huevos rancheros!
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast spot in San Antonio. The service is fast and friendly, and you always leave feeling full after spending just a few dollars. The breakfast tacos are absolutely amazing.

Jason P.

Yelp
A bean and cheese taco tells you everything you need to know about a Mexican Restaurant...... and this place is TRASHHHH. Cheap plastic American cheese, watery no flavored beans (I added the pepper) .... green salsa was ass too.
google avatar

R.J. R.

Yelp
This was our first time at Tommy's but have seen and heard so much about it . The barbacoa and Big Red is excellent savory barbacoa on a flour tortilla or corn if you prefer with guacamole and a Big Red to wash it down their green salsa adds just the right amount of heat to make it a great meal. This place is a must stop when in town if for anything just the barbacoa I've heard about their fideo too but that's for my next visit.
google avatar

Alexis H.

Yelp
Ordered online and I've eaten picked up order before too. Takes forever! Took 40 min for two tacos unbelievable! Horrible service
google avatar

Malorie S.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience. Top notch staff, food, atmosphere. If I could give more than 5 I would
