A Weekly Roundup of NYC Restaurant Closings, September 2021 | Eater NY

"Long regarded as one of the city’s best sushi restaurants, Tomoe Sushi has closed after nearly 40 years; the neighborhood destination was known for sub-$10 sushi rolls and long lines out the door, and in a heartfelt Instagram announcement ownership gave no specific reason for the shutdown but said they would post if they find a way to re-open elsewhere—loyal diners responded with shock and sadness." - Erika Adams

This is my favorite restaurant in San Jose. I make a point of dining here every time I am in town. I used to visit here every week when I lived there beginning in 2009 until I moved to Seattle in 2022. The staff are all very friendly and the quality of the seafood used in sushi is fantastic. I highly recommend sitting at the counter and mingling with the regulars and the chefs as they are a lot of fun.

Google
**updated Went again to find the quality had dropped. Sashimi has a fishy smell, Tonkotsu is over cooked so tested dry The decoration of this restaurant is very old-fashioned, with a style from 25 years ago. I ordered sushi rolls and I liked them. They were made in an old-fashioned way, simple and without too much sauce. Tonkatsu was crispy but too thin . Service is nice . I think I will go back to try other items later .

This is my favorite sushi spot! I've been coming here for over 15 years and never once had a bad experience. Actually, I don't think we've ever even had to wait for a table (they get busy at dinner but not packed). The food is delicious and I love that you can see them making the rolls right up front. My sister and I meet here for sister dates 1-2x a month so they've grown to know us and our usual orders. Not too expensive but everything is so good that we often eat a lot lol. The staff is so attentive and caring and they've remained largely stable over time so the place truly feels like home.

Google
Rolls were okay, tasted good and median prices were like $15. But a small bowl of udon priced $18.5 was a bit much, let alone a $12.5 soft crab appetizer which was just one tiny crab cut into 4 pieces..

Nam D.

Google
the space there is not big, but the service and quality is good. Sushi is also fresh and reasonable price.

Google
Wonderful place that I have slept on. Interior is decorated like the sushi places I frequented growing up which was a beautiful breath of fresh air in the Bay with how gentrified everything near by has become. Every roll and nigiri we had was great. They also had some menu items I don't see often, like wakame inside of the roll. The sushi chef, whom I presume is the owner, was very friendly and chatted with us a bit while we sat at the sushi bar, and the waitress was very friendly and nice. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality. The rice was seasoned perfectly. Additionally the rolls were very light on the sauce, which was wonderful. When I eat sushi, I don't want to just get a mouthful of sriracha mayo. I want to actually taste the great cut of fish. They use a light and tasteful touch. Highly recommend this place that has been around for over 30 years!

Google
Place is clean, quiet and service is rapid. The miso was a bit stale... maybe it was my tastebuds. I only tried the crab avocado roll, edamame, the miso and their plum wine...the wine was screaming delicious! I will definitely be returning to try out their sushi selection, it looked great.

Megan N.

Google
Good value for the price. Only problem for me was that I specifically talked to two servers about my sesame allergy to request it be left off, but then both my hamachi roll and my salmon shoyaki contained sesame.

Yelp
Came here for a nice solo dinner. They had plenty of room so I was immediately seated. A nice lady took my order and the only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the amount of time I had to wait to get my food. But once I got it, the food was delicious. It's safe to say I was done within 10-15 minutes. Cute mom and pop shop. Loved jt

Yelp
Updating my review as this is no longer my favorite since trying multiple new items from Tomo. The Bay Scallop roll is still my favorite, and they still make the best scallop roll imo, but everything else has been mediocre. The tempura is terrible. I don't even know how to describe it, but it's mostly batter and the texture is somewhat tough, which is really strange for tempura. Probably the worst I've ever had.

Yelp
Have been here many times before (me 20+ years and introduced my hubby to this place) , however; for some reason have never reviewed them...they've been here since 1995 and know what they're doing! Tonight we went on a date night. Arrived early at 430pm so we could snag the covetted sushi bar seats that we used to want but never arrived in time before the regulars. (Who by the way haven't changed since we used to come a few times per month) My husband ordered a hot sake and a large Asahi. I ordered a cold sake that they said was the most popular. It was delicious with soft pear accents and they gave me a bucket of ice to keep the bottle cold. We started out with ordering Chuka Isako (a special: seasoned baby octopus ) the flavors were amazing (a blend of flavors, almost teryaki, ponzu, mirin, umami so good, and topped with sesame seeds)...and my husband said it was one of the best things he's ever eaten!! We also order the Sashimi Special (Salmon Sashimi with Avocado and a spicy ponzu sauce) it was like BUTTER so smooth and yummy! Ordered on a recommendation from one of the regulars a Hamachi Shooter (which i was told to NEVER order when it's crazy busy because of the work it takes to make) but OMG tuna, homemade sauces with vinegar, citrus and so many flavors it's an explosion in your mouth. YUM! Another roll we ordered was a Lisa Special roll which has a "creamy scallop & avocado center covered with salmon & avocado and thinly sliced lemon" so so delicious. Before you think we ordered too much just KNOW it's an experience. Worth every bite. And worth spacing out so you can taste more things! We also ordered the Tony Special roll: salmon & fried onion rolled with spicy crab. There's also a dash of hot sauce that was a good finish to the bite. Also based on another recommendation we had a sort of steak tartare roll (Smokey bite, similar to a filet straight off the bbq with the first juicy bite) which had so many flavors i cannot even describe them. It was served similar to nigiri (on top of rice) but wrapped with seaweed. And the owner/sushi chef made us an albacore belly nigiri that was heaven! Highly recommend this place. The BEST sushi in the South Bay!! A hidden gem for sure.

Yelp
I liked the sashimi dishes I have had here. Also the many rolls i have tried.. the mamaniku is especially good.. On occasion there was a little extra piece of seafood on the plate. The customer service has ways been good. It's a sad day that Anthony the owner is retiring from the business. I wish him the very best.

Yelp
I have been eating great Sushi at Tomorrow Sushi for a number of years Long enough to know Anthony, the owner and chef great selection of most any type of Sushi, always fresh, my favorite is Hamachi Kama The service is great no matter where you sit we prefer the Sushi Bar the ambiance is awesome it is an authentic sushi bar I recommend this Sushi Bar, say hi to Anthony
google avatar

Ron K.

Yelp
This is the lace to enjoy great sushi. This is a family owned business. You are greeted at the door and seated immediately. Anthony is a professional when preparing your order. The ambiance is perfect. Especially if you dine at the Sushi bar. The selection are many. I have visited this establishment for 25 years and it is always consistant

Yelp
A little quaint place to grab a quick bite! The quality of fish was good, but nothing extremely special. However the amaebi was probably the best shrimp we've ever had! Salmon and hamachi were good as well, and we ordered two hamachi rolls--super simple but the quality of fish was pretty good! We didn't prefer the tuna though; the cuts of tuna were thin and general didn't have the expected quality that you would typically have of maguro. The unagi scallop hand roll was also just ok, as the mayo mixed in with it was too overpowering--would prefer if there was a smaller ratio of mayo mixed in with it. Overall, really cute spot--service was great and the workers were really nice and welcoming!

Yelp
Cute family run business! My fiance and I were helped by Chef Anthony at the sushi bar. I've lived in this area my whole life and never ate at this sushi restaurant until now. Anthony is great company at the bar and makes great sushi. I felt great supporting a local family business. We'll be back.

Yelp
This is place is better than Kenzo Sushi down the street. The prices are cheaper, and the quality of food is higher. I had the mackerel entrée with complementary soup salad, and my partner had the chicken teriyaki. We gobbled those up, so there are no pictures or evidence left. For dessert, we tried the deep-fried ice cream and it was amazing but definitely so much that we could not finish by ourselves. The hot and cold texture play from the fried outside to the ice cream inside is something that you'll want to experience at least once! We will definitely come back for an easy, healthy and tasty dinner, and we will be bringing our friends.

Yelp
I have been going to Toni Sushi since I was a child! I went from ordering bowl of tobiko to now rolls and sashimi. The fish has always been fresh and the staff is the best! My go to spot is booth in the back or at the bar. Open for over 25 years, 10000/10 recommend

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner on a Friday around 6pm and were seated straight away. There booths, tables, and sushi bar seating. We tried the Malcom x, Leslie special, and the crazy horse roll. We enjoyed all three! But my favorite was the crazy horse roll. It's yellowtail and unagi inside, topped with more yellowtail and sauce. It's a refreshing roll! My husband's favorite is the Leslie roll which has creamy scallop inside and salmon outside. We also tried their seared salmon belly nigiri and it was pretty good! Not the best we've had but definitely satisfies the craving. It was a little too seared for me. We will's definitely be back!

Yelp
At nearly 4 stars with 345 reviews, I really had high hopes for Tomo Sushi. My family of 3 arrived without having to wait for seating. Chairs are spacious but still provided good support for my constantly moving toddler. The menu is pretty straightforward, offering appetizers, bentos, rolls, sashimi, & nigiri. The one thing that stands out is the large array of sake. Our dinner consisted of: Garlic Edamame Sashimi Moriwase Dinner Saba Shioyaki Mackerel Dinner California Roll **dinner meals come with miso soup, rice, & a side salad** The garlic edamame was delicious. This dish was jam packed with garlicky deliciousness and flavors were spot on. Sashimi Moriwase was good- the slices of fish were fresh but a few selected pieces were obvious thinner than others. Mackerel was cooked thoroughly and still very moist. The California roll was the worst purchase of the evening- the roll didn't consist of any creamy binding ingredient which is something that ensures the roll to be moist and a preferred way for us to enjoy. I won't hold the lack of a binding ingredient against Toko- this is just their way of executing CA rolls but!! I didn't like the fact that the rolls weren't even tightly rolled. The avocado and imitation crab simply fell out of the nori & rice outter layer. Customer service wasn't attentive. Orders were taken and we were essentially forgotten aside from food being brought out. We had to request for hot tea refills, we had to flag someone down for napkins [who forgot about us/our request so we had to ask the same lady for a second time]. The 2 women running the floor seemed talkative and friendly with other tables who were obviously regulars but aside from that... nada. 3 stars. Not terrible but not good either...

Yelp
Waitresses are super nice and serve well. Typically go here for the soup only. Beef sukiyaki is good but the beef is a little rough. Other than that good nearby spot

Yelp
My go to local neighborhood sushi joint. It's cozy, but really have a lot of dish to choose from and the fish selections is fresh. The sushi chefs and crew are very friendly and always able to get seated right away. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I used to go to Tomo Sushi often when I lived in the area. Looking for a new good sushi place has been tough and made me miss Tomo more. Great food, great service, and nice atmosphere. The prices were good also.

Yelp
We came in during prime dinner time on a Saturday night and there was no guests there, that should have been my indication to turn around. Everything had an up charge, a few slivers of lemon, $1, fresh wasabi which wasn't fresh wasabi just the normal fake stuff, $2, a small side of spicy mayo, $1, a small side of watered down eel sauce, $1. Then came the real disappointment, the food itself. A few of our rolls had shrimp tempura in them. All of the shrimp tempura was cold and stale, not hot and fresh. A huge disappointment. $100 for a couple bad sushi rolls and low quality hamachi and up charge for everything, including a slice of lemon.

Yelp
I've been a San Jose native for 29 years and I cannot believe I haven't been here sooner! This hidden gem has great selection of sushi with a friendly and welcoming ambiance. The service was great! Seated almost immediately and was given great service throughout our meal. There was only 1 reason they didn't receive the full 5 stars, and honesty it's only because I'm a stickler for it. I ordered a large size Sapporo (Bottled Beer) and it wasn't as cold as it should have been. Other than that everything else was amazing.

Ting L.

Yelp
I like the rolls as they put more vegi and the ingredients are fresh. Also, not too much sauce added, that does not overwhelm the taste of the ingredients. Price is reasonable as compared to other Japanese restaurants.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
It was okay. Nothing special. Fish didn't smell. Rice could have had more vinegar. Service was eire.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Yes, it's worth a visit or more Huge selection of both standard and mixed rolls . Fresh yummy fish with all the staple nigiri and rolls you ate most likely to be accustomed to. I will return I will eat here again I'm sure. In fact I have already! The service is good too! It's an enjoyable place with good quality fish . ‍

Yelp
Such a hidden gem, one of my favorite sushi places in San Jose. The food is delicious and authentic and the service is great. Feels like a mom and pop restaurant with high quality sushi. Definitely recommend for a dinner or casual date night.

Yelp
The good: I've been craving sushi during my pregnancy and luckily this spot had a variety of signature rolls without the raw fish. I got an eel roll, shrimp tempura roll, scallop roll and a roll that had crab. I saw that the workers were making my order as fast as they could (3 sushi chefs). My food was ready in good timing and it was beautifully presented all together on one wood platform. The prices were fair. The interior felt authentic to Japanese style and I felt transported. I liked the cool mid-century modern looking Japanese chairs and the booths with the red lanterns. The workers were all friendly and sweet with my 1-year old daughter. The rolls ranged in many different prices so there was definitely something for everyone. The exterior of the restaurant is very unassuming in an older and outdated plaza that isn't very busy. The bad: They don't have outdoor dining. Some restaurants label the rolls as having raw fish or not. This would've helped with ordering. The interesting: Tomo means friend in Japanese.

Yelp
One of my favorite hidden gems in South Bay! The service is amazing; extremely friendly. The food is also really good! Good quality fish and vinegary rice.

Yelp
Came here with my friend on a Tuesday evening. Warning for vegetarians: their miso soup has bonito flakes! It was pretty empty, but that's probably because of the pandemic. So no wait, which is really nice. I ordered a vegetable tempura which came with miso soup, rice, and the tempura itself. The portion is large, which is great. Tastewise, nothing special to write home about. Presentation/atmosphere: 5/5. I can't complain about anything here, everything looks clean and the food looked nice as well. It's just like your normal local restaurant! Service: 5/5. The waitress was super nice and really attentive! I can only sing praise for her service. Taste: 3/5. What they excel in is quantity, rather than quality. I got lots of food, and it was prepared decently, but my taste buds are most definitely not craving this experience again. Everything tasted right, just not stellar. Probably won't be craving anything from here anytime soon, but if my friends bring up this place as a dining option I'd be fine with it. 4/5

Yelp
I've been coming back to this place for the sushi rolls and fresh sashimi. I keep forgetting what I order so I'm going with Malcom X and Crazy Horse rolls as recommended in the reviews here. I'm sharing some of the rolls I've had in this place but forget the name. Overall, great service and great place for sushi.

Jonathan B.

Yelp
The food was delicious, and the servers were incredibly welcoming and attentive. My wife and I enjoyed the omakase because it let us try a bunch of really scrumptious sashimi. If you're looking for a nice spot for a date or a restaurant for celebration, look no further than Tomo! You will not be disappointed.

Chef D.

Yelp
It took me years to find this place You must try the quality and service You expect from the real deal
google avatar

Elijah J.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I've been coming to Tomo for over 20years. This is the best sushi I've ever had. They have the freshest fish! The owner Anthony is great to converse with, and all the employees are amazing. If you haven't experienced Tomo you're definitely missing out.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
The ambiance is cute and the service was good. The sushi was presented beautifully but none of it tasted good. Most bites were overwhelming with the taste of mayonnaise. They have a very limited list of sushi rolls compared to most restaurants. The rolls are expensive for the quality that you're receiving.
google avatar

Bridgette F.

Yelp
Had a fried salmon roll a few days ago, spouse ordered several other things. Miso soup barely had anything in it no seaweed. The fried part could have been way better. The eel sauce was brown water. Ordered about 50$ worth of food but only three soy sauce packets were in there. 5/10 for me at best. Will look elsewhere.
google avatar

Zach P.

Yelp
Great spot in town for nigiri, sashimi, rolls. I enjoy sitting at the bar or taking friends who want to try. The owner/chef is friendly and jokes around with ya. Everybody seems to have their go-to sushi spot and Tomo is definitely mine and a bunch of us regulars.
google avatar

Michele P.

Yelp
Seems like an authentic neighborhood sushi joint which great quality fish and selection. Loved the oysters and would definitely get them again.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Yummy! Plus it's quiet and the people working are so nice. They were out or Taro Tuna, but everything we got was very tasty. Thanks!

Yelp
Last Friday, my family of 4 wanted to try a different sushi place and found this place on Yelp w/ decent reviews. We arrived around 7ish, and half of the restaurant was busy. We were seated immediately in a booth inside near the bathroom entrance. We were given the menu, and a few minutes later, we were asked if we were ready to order. We had to ask them several times to give us more time. We ordered the following: 1. Edamame 2. Salmon w/ cucumber roll: My 10yo likes it bc it's what he always orders. They are smaller rolls for the price. 3. Salmon skin roll: I like salmon skin hand roll, so this is a first I see it as a roll. My 10yo likes the hand roll, too, but he doesn't lit that it falls out, so I thought this would work for both of us. But it was alright. The salmon skin was limited and wasn't crunchy. The roll is also smaller 4. Salmon shashimi w/ side of rice: This is for my 8yo. He enjoyed it, but I felt the shashimi not served on ice made it a bit too soft to eat. But what matters is my 8yos liking for his dinner, not mine. 5. Bay Scallop Roll: I think I like this roll the best. It is very flavorful and tasty but small. 6. Crazy Horse Roll: The name of the roll sounds intense, but it tasted alright. I like the tobiko and jalapeno with the roll. 7. Omakase Chef Special: This was a big disappointment for my husband who enjoys eating sashimi. The shashimi wer just regular fish cuts and nothing special. There was a regular shrimp instead of an Ama Ebi w/ fried shrimp head or something fancy if sort. The small roll that came was normal as well. The staff are friendly and attentive to the tables. The booths were big, but the lighting was so poor that it was hard to read. I had to take pictures of the menu and zoom in to read better. I feel like the rolls were alright. The sushi was more on the softer side and not as fresh and firm.
google avatar

Megan Y.

Yelp
Went here for a birthday dinner, food was very mediocre. I got the dragon roll and it tasted a little off. Gyoza appetizer was frozen gyoza which is fine but it wasn't prepared well and was very stale. Service is ok nothing special. Probably won't be coming back here again unfortunately.
google avatar

Tanita J.

Yelp
I'm not sure how I've lived in the blossom hill area for so long and never been to Tomi! My boyfriend and I decided to swing by and avoid the crowds at kenzo last weekend and it did not disappoint! We ordered 5 different rolls, nigiri, beer and garlic edamame. Everything was delicious! I was particularly fond of the specialty roll that was recommended to us by our waitress (I wish I could remember the name.) overall we were incredibly impressed by both the food and the service. The fish was some of the freshest I've ever had. It is a little more expensive than kenzo, but you can definitely taste the quality difference so it's well worth it.

Yelp
One of my favorite southside Japanese restaurants. I love the family feel you get here. Always fresh and amazing sushi recommendations from the chef. I tell them to suggest something new, and am happy each time. The Japanese dishes are also great. The service is very friendly and fast. Check it out when you have a chance.

Yelp
Good choice of Sushi love sitting @ Sushi bar all staff are friendly Ambiance is casual & relaxing All food is very tasty

Yelp
Lame. Sushi was warm. Flavors were weird. Not a lot of great roll options. Mussels were sour. Never coming back. Sashimi was so warm ew.

Freddy C.

Yelp
Hidden amazing sushi place. Service, food and ambiance 10/10 all the way. Price are more than affordable and the portion are great. Quick and friendly service.

Yelp
Sushi is arguably my favorite food (coffee a hard second). And out of all the amazing sushi I've eaten in and around this world, Tomo Sushi is by far FAVORITE Sushi restaurant of ALL-TIME. Nothing beats your local spot. In fact, It's been my local sushi spot for well over a decade now. Not only is the sushi fresh and amazing but the experience is... Well it's home away from home. Sushi chef and owner Anthony is the most talented and genuine soul you'll ever meet. Huge golf/sports fan. I love coming in and eating at the bar, catching up with everyone, and of course watching the local sports games. Go Warriors/Sharks! Their staff and service is second to none. You're treated like family. This cozy but spacious restaurant is perfect for intimate/group settings. My favorite thing on the menu is "The Crazy Horse". If you love spicy I highly recommend it. I literally order it every time I come here. Some other favorites include; Hamachi, sashimi and other speciality items (depending on how hungry I am). The photos are from when I last celebrate my birthday back in October. Yes, I love Tomo that much I came and celebrated my birthday here. And it was the most unforgettable/forgettable experience. It's now a birthday tradition. Check out the photos. And don't just take my word for it, come check it out for yourself. The homemade cupcakes were made/brought in by my friend.

Steven L.

Yelp
Rolls here are good, but to be honest, nothing special. Omakase is a nice beginner kind, but for veteran sushi eaters, go for a better location. Has nice sake options and rolls, so don't let that stop you from trying this place.
google avatar

Marti F.

Yelp
I was loyal to the high quality of Tomo until there was several break-in's (unfortunately) and the prices skyrocketed. Yes, I do think there is a correlation here. Once they charged me $100.00 for an order that was once $70.00, I had to find a better option. Well, Akita Sushi on Blossom Hill Road, next to Trader Joe's is OUTSTANDING and HALF the price. Sorry, Tomo Sushi. This consumer does her research.
google avatar

Tristan N.

Yelp
Quality sushi for the price! Friendly staff. Glad that they offer fresh wasabi. Always a bonus
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
This place is wonderful, it is the kind of restaurant that sadly has been dying off in the bay area, to be replaced by the likes of 'Sushi Confidential' and such.. socialite-focused, and not food focused. Sushi Tomi is a lovely Japanese restaurant, with incredibly good prices with the kind of quality I miss and wish wasn't so hard to find. The family clearly cares and has good standards, I look forward to coming a lot more often.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Fresh sushi, friendly service. Has been in business a long time which says a lot. Support local! They have other options in case you have friends who don't like sushi. Reasonable prices.
google avatar

Kewai M.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and decor. Feels like a legit sushi place. The food is top notch and as fresh as can be!! The ladies are very nice and very attentive. My sister and I never felt ignored despite it being quite busy.

Yelp
They say go to the best sushi restaurant, but I say go to the best sushi chef and he will take care of you. I've known Master Anthony for a decade now and I've been coming to his restaurant to try whatever he wants to give me because we put each other's trust in one another. If you want to get his work and his stand up comedy show please I urge you to come sit at the bar. But come when they first open so you can chat with this man. He serves a good variety of fish and is not shy to make anything off the menu to make you feel welcomed.
