Tomoyama sushi

We celebrate Father's Day on Sunday here at this nice restaurant. Very nice atmosphere. It's located on the second floor of the shopping center. Easy parking. The fish were very fresh. Good service. We thought it was going to be very crowded because of Father's Day, but it was ok. No waiting. Great place to relax.

Mediocre at best compared to other places I have been. Service terrible, no bussing, having to flag down for anything when it was quiet and fully staffed. Food fine but did not stand out for me. And they charge for green tea refills which I have never seen. Cute place, however.

We have been going here for 8 years. Latest menu and/or chef update is subpar. Signature dish adagashi is no longer silky soft tofu but has some chalky consistency while the sauce is sour and watery. The langostine roll is wet, runny syrupy. The vegetable tempura roll is unremarkable. The fried fish filet is thin and overfried. Most of the menu items are no longer happy hour discounted, including side dish fried rice, and our all time favorite chirashi bowl. The wait from back kitchen was noticeably longer than before. I know the owner will correct all these changes since we love to support local businesses. Our previous 5 star review is as follows: Best quality, value and service in north county. The adegashi is delicate and crunchy. The sushi beancurd is balanced and done right, without being over-stuffed with rice as most other places. The rice is chewy and flavorful. The avocado roll is savory from the high quality sea weed. The tempura is delicate from using fresh rice oil, bringing out the subtle vegetable taste. The veggie fried rice is pure umami without being oily. My wife always order the chirashi bowl, heaping with fresh fish, every single time. The green tea ice cream is so yummy and creamy. The happy hour discount until 5:30 is a great deal.

YUM! Very good sushi in Carlsbad, the servers were very attentive and the sushi was great! I got the Carlsbad roll and loved it! Great spot to stop at after a visit to the library!

Their vegetable yakisoba was very yummy, the noodles had a nice texture and the pickled radish was very flavorful. Went during Happy Hour so the prices was half off but I would've happily paid in full, it was very delicious :)

Nice relaxing music! Sushi was very fresh and taste was great! Was are first time here and it’s definitely a place to keep coming back to. The rolls were huge. Are server was prompt and explained everything we asked about. Gave us time to look at the menu. Really good service!

Service is pretty quick during happy hour. All wait staff are very friendly. Their sushi and Bento box is delicious and at a great price. Everything seems fresh and the restaurant is clean. Large parking lot with 2 EV chargers.

Happy Hour is such a good deal - pretty much everything is 50% off - apps, sushi, special rolls, entrees. Only sashimi, drinks and a small section of the rolls are not on sale. the yellowtail nigiri I had was super fresh. Crispy rice was excellent! Rolls are huge! But not in a good way. I like traditional size that fits nicely in your mouth in one bite, but they have american size rolls, oh well.

We've been coming to this place for years and it is constantly good and I would say, improved! Great rolls, nice service, awesome location close to everything! Great spot for date night and a movie with Cinépolis next door! Also, a super fun spot for birthdays! They turn up the music, turn down the lights and make it super special!

Delicious sushi and generous slices of fish on sushi and rolls. Fresh tasting and well prepared. Had the lemon roll, TNT roll and 3 combo bento. All great deals because we ordered before 5:30pm!

Solid happy hour with practically everything 50% off the menu from 3:30-5:30 (food only, drinks aren't on special but still decent prices for beer and saki.) Most of the speciality rolls have krab so if that's not your thing order the basic rolls, sushi and nigiri, which is also half off during HH. We like the Carlsbad roll, the Washington roll, blue fin and salmon nigiri the best. Good location upstairs and next to Uptown Cheapstake for post-sushi deal shopping. Would recommend as a go-to weekday or casual sushi spot to bring the kids.

The sushi is fresh and quite good! The shrimp tempura is pleasantly crunchy and light with a breadth of flavors. The sashimi melts in your mouth and the popster and other specialty rolls have a great mix of flavors! The servers are attentive and quick to bring out food or respond to requests. We were seated in a side "private" dining area because of the kids, and they said it felt like a VIP experience. Great atmosphere!

Great food, good prices. Excellent happy hour daily. This is our favorite sushi spot in North County.

They have signs stating if you check in on Yelp you can get a free ice cream so that might be why this place has so many positive reviews. The rolls here were very mediocre... the best thing we ordered was the garlic edamame. I got the mango roll which was advertised as having avocado in it & the roll came to the table without a trace of avocado and it seemed like the shrimp tempura was a bit undercooked. Not to mention my roll was falling apart because the rice was sticking to the plate in huge chunks. The restaurant itself is very dark with dim lighting even in the middle of the day. On the other hand, service was great and our waitress was super nice and kept checking on us.

I always enjoy coming to this spot with my family, but I want to emphasize that one of the things that has been consistently awesome is the service. Our waiter today, Quinn, was super pleasant and helpful and it is so nice to know that when we visit from out of town, we can rely on being treated so well by staff like him.

It's been a while since we've eaten here and it's still as good as we remember. Love their happy hour deals!

We tried this place a few weeks ago for dinner and service was good, food came in quick. We really like the cucumber salad and sushi was good. The restaurant looked clean and good ambiance.

I visited on a Monday afternoon around 12:30. The place was empty, so we chose to sit at the sushi bar. Menus were promptly brought to us, and the sushi chef took our order right away. We ordered bluefin tuna and octopus sashimi, yellowtail nigiri, and I had the Hawaiian roll. The fish were incredibly fresh. We also ordered a bottle of sake, bringing our total to around $90. While the fish was excellent, the specialty roll selection was somewhat limited, and we weren't given water alongside our sake. On the bright side, they offer great lunch specials, and parking is plentiful.

Last Friday night was my first time there. I don't know how long they've been there but however long, I which I'd gone there sooner!! The hostess, Aria, was amazing and so patient with all my questions as I don't eat much and I'm not a Sushi eater (I wanted to order from the children's menu but unfortunately, I'm way beyond the age cutoff.) She suggested a few different options for me and I went with one of her recommendations and it was absolutely delicious. It was sesame chicken appetizer and the portion was still too much for me but it reheated well. I sat at the Sushi bar, that was fun environment and entertainment watching the chefs. I met a few fellow patrons there, watched golf and even got to me the owner who was extremely fun and friendly. I will definitely be back.

I've been to a boat load of Sushi spots .... but finally a Sushi spot where U can sit at the Sushi bar and watch SPORTS ( 2 TV's ) . My happy place ... And the food and service were TOP NOTCH ! SASHIMI was stellar and fresh. I will definitely be back .

Our favorite sushi spot in Carlsbad! They have a great happy hour with half off deals on rolls! I always look forward to tomoyama for date nights or work lunches with co workers. Can get busy on weekend afternoons but worth it.

Horrible service , drove so far in the pouring rain and for her to say they weren't going to seat us one hour before closing.

A delicious fantastic sushi restaurant. The food is amazing the staff are super friendly. Great atmosphere. I love every time I visit Tomoyama Sushi. Highly recommended.

We came here for lunch on a Friday around 11:30. We were seated right away. We ordered the Sesame Chicken Bento box and the Kitsune Udon. Both were just okay. The chicken in the bento box was more crunchy than expected and the sauce was sweeter than I would prefer. Speaking of sweet, the rice on the California rolls was also sweeter than most rolls I have had. For the Udon, it was very average. The tofu was a bit chewy. The servers were very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable. Good amount of seating.

Food was fabulous. Service and ambience were great. I have eaten there for over 15 years and recommend it highly.

It was fine, just ok. Had weird vibe. Zero interaction with chef while at bar. Weird, because I was only one there. Something also weird I noticed was that the green tops of their soy sauce containers at their sushi bar looked like it was 10 years old and had been through a 1000 battles with their dishwasher. Even had pieces chipped off it. It made me think "Ewe!" Next thing I thought was "I wonder how many people a week, sit in this chair and start their meal with thinking "Ewe!" Bright Side: Their happy hour is a good deal. 40% Off from 3:30-5:00pm.

Had the dragon roll and tnt roll and they where great. Would come back again. I recommend to try the fresh chopped wasabi.

Had the Carlsbad roll, delicious! With crab and shrimp tempura topped with lots of fish (salmon, yellowtail, and tuna) and crab with tobiko and crunchies, yum! Very friendly service, and free ice cream for writing this

Our experience was great! We tried happy hour. Almost all menus were 40% off that was amazing in such a high price period!! Sushi is very thick and tasty. Dish garnishments were so pretty and professional. The waiter, a young man, was super kind and gentle. I am living in Los Angeles. I wish this same restaurant will be open at my place.

Had a very nice meal consisting of miso soup, a Crunchyroll, green tea service was excellent. The food was tasty. It was a very enjoyable meal, some green tea ice cream thanks man.

Food is always so so good here and service is so kind. I love love LOVE the Miso soup, Crispy Rice, and Spicy Garlic Edamame.

We came for a family dinner and everyone loved it! The service was great & food came out really fast. The table favorite roll was the Carlsbad roll. Excellent!! My husband also loved the short ribs. We will definitely be back!

Friendly staff and decent restaurant. I recognize coming from Los Angeles it's challenging to find sushi outside of LA that's any good. Not the best here, but not the worst. This place was just ok but it fit the function. It's located in a shopping plaza next to (at time of publish) Jersey Mikes and near a movie theater. I enjoyed the protein style menu and the Ex-Girlfriend sushi roll. It came with a hefty salad serving which was a nice touch to make a complete meal. The cons were the food was just ok and the salads were drowning in dressing and tasted a little watery. I tasted three white wines? and after disliking them all I quit and didn't bother to order any. Kids were happy with their tempura appetizer which was crisp and hot. Green tea ice cream was delicious and a good closure to the meal.

This is the second time we have come and we have had such a great experience! We came for my husband's birthday and had the best time. The food was delicious and the happy hour was great! Super fun atmosphere and clean place. The service was great. Every one is so friendly. When i had called the guy who answered the phone was so nice and it made me very excited to come in!

Sushi is normal quality, in line with most places but nothing special. They have a happy hour special for 40% off, but my last two ventures found that somehow the 40% was forgotten or miscalculated. I don't think I'll go back because it happened twice, which leans toward bad business practices. I do recommend that if you decide to go, and again, the food is okay, just not exceptional, that you check your bill.
