My colleague and I had lunch at Tom's Oyster Bar yesterday, and I was very much looking forward to the clam chowder as she told me how good it was. We sat at the bar, and the first thing I noticed is how nicely appointed the bar and restaurant is. The bar stools are a very nice leather in a light blue color with nailhead trim, and the surrounding booths are covered in diamond tufted black leather upholstery, which looks really elegant. The shelves of the bar are back-lit which illuminates all of the spirits inside the bottles and looks beautiful. The bartender who served us our lunch was awesome. He was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable about all of the menu items.
They have a special lobster menu (we were told only for another day or week) which has so many delicious sounding items on it such as lobster bruschetta, and lobster mac and cheese. We ordered the clam chowder, and the lobster carbonara, both of which are on the regular menu. The lobster carbonara was delicious in every way; the pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was creamy, light, and filled with Pecorino Romano cheese which is what real carbonara sauce should be made with. The lobster pieces were succulent and generous throughout the dish. It was one of the best seafood dishes I've had in a long time. I would return just to have that dish over and over again. It was absolutely perfect in every way.
Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing for the clam chowder. I was disappointed for the following reasons. To begin with, it was not freshly prepared. I could tell it had been prepared in advance and reheated. It had thickened to the point of a pudding-like consistency, the potatoes in it were overcooked, and the temperature was just warm. The flavor was good, but the temperature and texture were bad. In my opinion, a restaurant that specializes in seafood--and is known for their clam chowder--should serve freshly prepared, steaming bowls of chowder every day they are open for business. If the chowder was freshly prepared, I absolutely would have ordered some to take home. I cannot recommend the clam chowder, but I can recommend the atmosphere, service, and lobster carbonara. I also want to return for a lobster roll, which is reasonably priced, and sounds delicious.
