Tom’s Tavern Co-Owner Ron Gurdjian Has Died | Eater Detroit

"On Seven Mile in Detroit, this ramshackle but iconic dive has been a fixture since the 1970s, though its future is uncertain now that it’s been closed amid city issues and Ron Gurdjian’s passing. After founder Tom Lucas died, Ron—who stumbled into tending the bar—became its devoted steward and shaped its character: peering over his spectacles with a crooked grin, interrogating newcomers, offering laconic witticisms and florid rants, matchmaking students, steelworkers, and contractors, and dancing through the annual Babe Ruth Birthday Party with a rocks glass full of ice and Jack Daniel’s. I watched him keep the jukebox full of honky-tonk, bluegrass, and old-school soul, support down-and-out and rising Detroit musicians, serve his legendary chili from the giant ancient stove, and preside over the bar’s hallowed but uneven floorboards; under him the place felt warm, ramshackle, and distinctly Detroit." - Mickey Lyons

This place is so horrible and unreasonable and 0 knowledge of customer service. I had my expired ID with temporary paper from the DMV older than the server and yet I was denied and kicked out for not have an ID, when I have a ID. To the owner and ID is to identify people so they are not under aged. If your not from this town I suggest you don't go here. They do not like outside travlers. I asked around the area and they were shocked by my experience so was I. Save your time and money don't go to this place.

While walking out a rude and miserable looking woman walked out as she cut us off. This comes in play later. We go in and a lady in black dress serves us drinks. Our first drink goes empty as we sit and soak in this really odd environment. Figured I’d get one more beer. I waited a while and then the miserable lady comes in behind bar and the black dress lady goes on customer side of bar. The bartender had left the property because she had pulled out in her truck. A customer was filling in for her. After she came back later she tapped her finger on bar at me and just says “ready for the next?” So rude, no personality, clothes weren’t clean, she spilled a drink. This place is horrible! We left and will NEVER come back! Looked neat from the outside. Pics of our drinks as they sat empty.

We asked around to find something fun to do in Winslow. A couple people mentioned this place. No food. Total dive bar. A couple pool tables. Seemed like a place for locals and not tourists. Bartender was nice.

Best wings I've ever had. You've got to come in and try the raspberry Chipotle sauce on the wings. These wings never touch oil. There are smoked and then air fried.

We stopped at Tom's Tavern on our way to the Grand Canyon and this place reminded me of our local watering hole at home. The bartender was attentive, hilarious, and personable and provided great service. The locals were equally awesome. They don't serve a full menu, but the wings are awesome. The company and great service are worth the visit!

Awesome lil bar with live music. Good deals on drinks, pool tables and card games. Just be careful, the law frequents this spot (it's the only late night bar in town) if you drink, don't drive!! (Should be understood)

Arrived at three o'clock. Friday. One customer there. Sat down. Bartender never acknowledged my presence. No how are you doing. No what can I get you. No nothing. Not even eye contact. I laid a twenty on the bar expecting her to take my order..... Nothing. She walked behind the bar and disappeared. I waited ten minutes and got up and left. Happy that the owner has a monopoly on bars in Winslow. Anyone else opened one he would be out of business. Never going back. Going to make it a point to tell anyone who I might think is going to get close to this bar not to go.

Tom's tavern is definitely a local bar but has good vibes in the early evenings. I got to play some house poker. Which was fun. I also got to play pool for a bit and run the table. The drinks are strong the bartender was quick and nice. The people locals were friendly. It did get a little shady after 12. Younger crowds (early 20's) bounce in around then and take over.

What a cool little find. This place is massive! I was shocked such a small town had such a large watering hole. There are a few pool tables, as well as a ton of TVs, great for game day! The bar is so beautiful! That wood is just brilliant! The bartender was friendly and we had a great time during our pit stop!

Pleasantly surprised by the awesome pizza and smoked wings. The staff was very friendly and took great care of us. Will definitely be back.

Great hangout! Lots of choices for tap beers! The regular bartenders are awesome! The new DJ chip has great tunes on Friday and Saturday night when he's there!
