"A Japanese cafe from Ryan and Elena Roadhouse — the team behind next door’s omakase, Nodoguro — Tonari was originally slated to transition to a bar in the evenings. It would be an understatement to call Tonari inviting; we were virtually hustled in off the street by the very friendly staff and walked through the menu, which is somehow both bewildering and comforting. Intense flavors - big mackerel slices, enough salmon roe to restock the Columbia, the fattiest beef tongue - are combined in ways that make what are often challenging dishes into food you would never have thought would be this comforting. The presentation is well thought out and they have their pandemic schtick down like no other restaurant I've seen. Overall a great dinner and, while certainly not cheap, money well spent.

Impeccable service! Outdoor seating available. Food is very delicious, presentation looks traditional Japanese yet tastes like the Chef has put a twist in every dish we tried. Interior aesthetics is a zen gem! Set changes, but not sure how often.

The whole experience of eating here was great. The portions and prices are small enough that you can try a number of dishes — all of which we tried were scrumptious. Try the shortbread cookies with a pot of tea. Service was very friendly and all the pottery everything was served in was beautiful. Plus their bathroom has a bidet and a heated toilet seat! Couldn’t ask for anything more.

I ordered take out from here last Thursday was impressed! Everything is neatly packaged and separated for great presentation and it all tasted great even 30-45 mins later at home. I look forward to being able to in-dine at the restaurant in the future! My only suggestions would be to have bigger bags to fit everything in, instead of having to juggle several small bags and carrying trays. And labeling the condiments and toppings that need to be applied at home with their names would be very helpful. Not gonna lie, I had no idea which dried thing to put where 😅 Thank you guys for the great food and being flexible and accommodating in this trying time! Hope to see you all on the flip side.

Best Japanese food I've had since living in Okinawa. Great owners who are unfortunately being forced out of their space by unreasonable landlords. I sure hope they land somewhere close.

It's rare to find a restaurant where I want to order everthing on the menu. The food was incredible and I will be back to try more!
