Tonkatsu Daiki

"‘Daiki’ was the full name when the owner-chef’s parents ran it as a teishoku restaurant. The second-generation owner-chef switched to specialising in tonkatsu. Pork from Kagoshima is deep-fried in salad oil to provide the batter with just the right crispness. His experience in Chinese cooking comes to the fore in the piquantly spiced mustard sauce He pays special attention to the rice, too, cooking it in small batches." - Michelin Inspector

The best tonkatsu we had in Japan! A delightfully crunchy exterior, with the most succulent cut of pork. The chef was fantastic and accommodating, and helped us pick out a cut we would enjoy best - and he was spot on! You must try with salt first, then tonkatsu sauce, then mustard. And for those adventurous, double dip the tonkatsu and mustard for the most flavoursome bite! We waited around an hour in the queue, and received the final seating. We weren’t rushed out, but were encouraged to savour every bite. This is a place I will most definitely come to again. (I started eating before I took the photo - it was way too good to wait).

Out of all the tonkatsu spots I tried in Japan, Tonkatsu Daiki was hands down my favorite. The wait was about 45 minutes, but absolutely worth it. The chef was incredibly kind, helped us order, and his recommendations did not disappoint. The pork was perfectly cooked with just the right thickness, and the service was warm and welcoming. An amazing experience from start to finish.

I almost didn't go in because looking through window it looks like there are no clients. I went anyway and so glad I did. There are only a few tables in the back and a few bar seats. I ordered the lean pork loin #2 after reading another review, 180 grams. It was so good. Despite being lean, it was cooked just right so it was so soft and juicy. It tasted great. Of the 3 dipping sauces, teriyaki, mustard, salt. I enjoyed the first two the most. The pork didn’t need more salt. In fact it was so good without any additional sauce, but the sauce just gave it a bit extra. I don't have Tonkatsu often because I'm trying to reduce fat. This was lean and the coating was light and crispy and was not oily. It was so good, I have to go back!

Had the best tonkatsu ever. It was truly an awesome experience and would visit again in a heartbeat. There was a line out the front and it took forever to get inside, so the lesson for next time is to make reservations. Once inside things went quite well, so not sure what happened with the other negative reviews. I do not speak Japanese either, but did not have any issues communicating with the staff. Itadakimasu (いただきます)!

Knowing Tonkatsu Daiki's fame from Michelin guide, I came prepared with cash. They open at 11am and I arrived at 10.32, I was already the 6th person in line. The doors open at exactly 11.00 and we were ushered in to our designated seats and given the menus. The place was quite small and I was lucky that I made it into the first round of customers to get in. There was no English menu, but it's nothing a translation app can't solve. Additionally, the staff speaks English well and is very helpful. I got the no. 2 hire katsu (tenderloin pork cutlet) set and chose the 120g size, due to my preference for leaner cuts in pork and sometimes eating a large amount of fried food could cause me headaches. The order was made at 11.05 and was delivered 30 minutes later. The gorgeous thick cuts of meat came with refillable rice, salad, and soup. They also provided some condiments such as tonkatsu sauce, mustard, and salt. I was blown away from the first bite as it was the cleanest tasting tonkatsu I've ever had. It had none of those annoying odor when pork was not prepared well. Texture was tender but firm, it was lean but supple and easy to chew. Until the last bite, it was not greasy at all. My favorite combination was of the meat and dipping salt with a little of their salad. To answer all your FAQs: Yes, it's worth the wait. Yes, 120g size is fulfilling enough, but I would indulge myself and get the 180g size next time. No, I didn't know I'd still dream about it until today.

My first tonkatsu in Japan, and may end up being the best I'll have. Went twice at lunch on different days, first time for the lean which had no wait, second for the fatty where I waited approx. 45 mins. Both times the pork was extremely, incredibly tender, taking no effort to chew but having enough bite that its satisfying in the mouth. I got the largest size for both which were incredibly light despite what you would think, I didn't leave feeling heavy or overfull, just fully whelmed. A must try in Osaka for tonkatsu lovers.
