"The tonkatsu is savoured with demi-glace sauce. Though the tonkatsu gets top billing as the restaurant’s speciality, the demi-glace, simmered for a full 10 days, surely deserves equal mention. From his mentor, who trained in yoshoku, the second-generation owner-chef inherited not only the flavouring but also the old-school dining-hall feel. With the retro building, plate-glass windows and shop-worn chairs, time seems to have stood still. It’s no surprise that Tonkatsu Ichiban was founded in 1960." - Michelin Inspector

We arrived around 6pm the restaurant was full but there was no queue, a queue started to form shortly after. Speaking to people behind us in the queue they had been recommended the restaurant by friends who have been previously. We were welcomed openly and seated quickly when space became available. The service was quick and the food was amazing. If you're looking for good quality food in Kyoto I couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough. They also have a Michelin star so this was the first Michelin star restaurant we have ever eaten at and it did not disappoint nor did it break the bank.

Really loved this place , it's small and cozy and definitely a friendly atmosphere. The food was mouth watering , we had the japanese tonkatsu and it was super soft and delicious. We arrived at 5.30pm and got seated instantly but as we left around 30 - 40 minutes later there was a small queue but they are quick at serving so I'm sure it would be a long wait and even if it was it would definitely be worth the wait

This is a popular place even amongst the local. We came here because it's very near our hotel. The set lunch is cheap and good at 800yen. The Chicken Katsu Don is very tasty. Chicken is tender. There's salad and miso soup in the set. They give us warm handkerchief to clean.

We found the place on the map while looking for dinner options. It's located on a quiet street, not far from Kyoto Station. We had to wait for 20-30 minutes, but it was worth it! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff was super friendly. I highly recommend it!

🇬🇧 Arrived around 6pm on Sunday evening and were given a table after queueing for less than 10 minutes. Food and service was excellent. We had both pork and chicken katsu which were both great. Real authentic Japanese katsu curry. Thoroughly recommend.

This is a Michelin starred restaurant located in a small and unassuming building. Inside, it feels very 1960s. The specialty here is the tonkatsu which is amazingly good, crispy on the outside, thick and succulent on the inside. The hamburg steak is also a must try. The restaurant has very limited seating, and is an easy 15-20 min stroll from Kyoto station.

One of my favorite place in Japan. The place is super authentic, and the food extremely tasty. The place is full of locals. We loved the tonkatsu and the vibe. Price is really decent. Better come early as you will probably need to queue outside to get a seat.

Small restaurant that specializes in tonkatsu. You should absolutely eat here! The food is godly, the service is super friendly and the prices are super affordable. This is without a doubt the best tonkatsu ive had in my life.
