St James’s Market in Central London Poised to Welcome New Gastropub | Eater London

"A London ramen chain that experimented with an upmarket concept and a proprietary pop-up closed its St James’s outpost in January. The closure, after earlier attempts to diversify with a more upmarket brand, underscores the difficulty of sustaining casual and concept-led dining formats in that part of central London." - Adam Coghlan

Google
Okay... so I want there on recommendation of a friend... I'm not sure what they were thinking. DO NOT RECOMMEND... The ramen was the saving grace here... the hand rolls are expensive and the smallest I've seen... tasted like canned tuna... I could make better hand rolls...NOT worth it in the department. The Ramen was good. Not real warm... in fact, somehow, the eggs were COLD... presentation of food was good, but the whole place stunk worse than a fish market in summer! It was very smelly and didn't seem all that clean...

Google
This was a quiet spot and not very busy when we arrived, although it was on a Sunday and close to closing time. Nice restaurant. Staff was super formerly and inviting. I tried the WTF is wrong ramen, and not only was it unique, it tasted equally as amazing! We also got gyoza, and they were fried perfectly. Overall, this was a great experience, and the food tasted amazing!

Google
WOW I have never had WORSE ramen! Broth was bland and salty at the same time. Ordered a Katsu cutlet and it was stringy and hard inside with no flavor. The Charsu pork bun was HARD as a rock no pillow fluffiness like it’s supposed to be .

Google
We love the ramen here! The tantanmen ramen is especially good but I like to get it with chicken katsu instead of pork belly and ground pork. The katsu curry ramen is another favorite as well as the curry and chicken katsu but be sure to get it with a side of kimchi. The restaurant itself is a vibe. I love the lighting and murals. It was very busy on a Friday evening, which is a shame because this is the best ramen house we have found in the valley. At least it was quiet and we have never had to wait for a table.

Google
It was okay. The spicy ahi hand roll was good, and the chicken curryramen was sub-par. The vegetables weren’t cooked through and the broth was too thick for my taste, the chicken was good though. They were busy in the kitchen and it took a while to get a water, overall was just an okay experience.

Google
Delicious food and great service. Highly recommend the Tonkatsu Ramen and Tonkatsu rice plate. Dinning room is a little small. Clean facilities and friendly service. Tonkatsu Ramen Bar and Tonkatsu Shabu Shabu are separate but connected on the inside. Give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed. 😁

Google
Honestly best ramen place I’ve ever been to. I also had three rolls. The salmon was my favorite one. You can taste the freshness and the quality of it. Definitely coming back

Meg P.

Google
The ramen was pretty good. I mix 1/2 shoyu and 1/2 tonkotsu for my broth. I also ordered edamame- it needed salt terribly so that was a bummer since I was in a hotel and didn’t have access to much. I will say the packaging was good and everything arrived as I ordered it. You must try the spicy sauce- it was very good- and hot!

Yelp
The ambience is nice. The seats were maybe up for a good scrubbing.... But the decor is nice and welcoming and chill. The service was great, she helped us decide what to get and we were all happy with our choices. The food was so good! I got the tofu curry udon and the flavor was on point! I didn't think it tasted curry-y but everyone else did. I love curry too! Haha the noodles were so yummy and flavorful. Our appetizers were also just as delish! Edamame and spring rolls you can't go wrong. We would definitely go back!

Yelp
The service was perfectly fine. But my mom really disliked her food which makes me not feel inclined to give an amazing review :\ I liked how all my food tasted. Nothing extraordinary but still good. But my mom really did not like the beef brisket noodles for her. She said they were way too salty. :( It's a shame because in the past she's said they are really good but this day they weren't.

Yelp
Honestly just don't waste your time or money. Apparently the ramen bar and sushi place that is CONJOINED are two different establishments that share a name. Upon walking in they asked " are you here for sushi or ramen"? Well both. Waitress looked annoyed and told us to "just sit". It wasn't until after we ordered and were ready to leave that we were told our card was going to be ran twice. Once for ramen and once for sushi. then had the audacity to ask "is that okay"? As if we had a choice. The ramen noodles are DISGUSTING!!! I'm talking under done mush. Such a shame cause the broth was actually good. All the sushi was hand rolled which I normally have no issue with but this was just sloppy and ugly. Overall they should be embarrassed. 10/10 don't recommend and won't be back. 0 stars.

Yelp
Great place to stop by for some good ramen. Whenever a restaurant doesn't invest in menus and force you to scan the QR code and read the tiny print on your phone, they lose a star from me. It is not convenient for the customer and actually takes longer to order because you cannot see the entire menu at once. Luckily; since it is Ramen, the food arrives quite quickly. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen which was a bit expensive for Ramen and I had to pay extra to add corn. The ramen itself was good, not amazing. The egg was whole not cut in half, but still cooked right. The plaza is small and not a great amount of parking, but I came at a good time. Once you enter, it is quite dark in the front of the restaurant, since they put a cover/wallpaper over the front windows. Likely because of the summer sun in the evenings. Service was excellent, very friendly associate who helped me, big smiles and very attentive, making sure my water glass was full. That is important to me... :-) The gyoza; well, you can't really mess those up. The dessert was really good with the green tea ice cream strips on top of the sponge cookie, whipped cream on the outside. Very good, light and unique! This place is worth a second trip.... if I bring my reading glasses to read the tiny print from their menu in my phone.

Yelp
Pretty expensive for what you pay for. Though their bowls have a lot of attributes that are in ramen, I would say this place isn't very authentic. Their broth was more on the salty side and their Tonkotsu and Miso broth tasted almost identical. I would also say the miso ramen did not come with a lot of protein. However, the service at this place was great! Everyone was really nice and the food came out fast. The server attended to us frequently and constantly checked to see if we needed more water. Also, the overall ambiance was nice. It was not too loud. Overall, this would not be my first choice for a meal but I would come back if need be.

Yelp
Personal experience: The decor here is so beautiful. I went in while it wasn't busy and had such an amazing experience. They do have a QR code for you to scan so that comes really useful. I did like how they came with this device where you were able to pay at the table! Food: My friend and I ordered the Veggie miso ramen and we loved it! The broth was delicious and the noodles were well done, and we did order other foods which were really good and I absolutely loved they had a lot of choices for non pork items. Service: I can't complain! She was such an amazing server and got our food pretty fast!

Yelp
As I've mentioned in my previous review, their ramen isn't very authentic. Every bowl taste about the same except for their Beef Brisket Dry Noodle. About the only thing I went there for. Over the last couple of months I've been here, even their quality for that has gone down. The meat is less meat and more globs of fat. The price has increased by 15% since last year. Where other restaurants are focusing on quality (while balancing price) to keep their customers, Tonkotsu Ramen Bar wants their customers to be satisfied with an ever increasingly bland tasting menu, and cheap quality utensils. They went from good wooden chopsticks to cheap non-reusable chopsticks that break before you even use them. I think my last straw with this place is their lack of self-reflection and respect for the customer's money. Their automatic tipping recommendations start at 18%, 20%, 25%, and then **30%**. In Japan, Tonkotsu ramen is a comfort food. In West Valley City, 'Tonkotsu' has forgotten its roots and just wants your money. Despite this place being right near my home, I rather go further out, wait in traffic then visit here again.

Yelp
Delicious as always. This place is very mellow and relaxed for an atmospheric vibe, and the servers have always been kind and helpful for first timers. I ordered the karaage (fried chicken thighs) and the pork gyoza (potstickers) for appetizers, and they were served flaming hot and crispy and fresh out of the kitchen. Damn good, the both of them. Neither appetizer made it home, haha! For the entrée, I got their signature Tonkotsu ramen and it was delicious. I docked a store only because I prefer my pork belly on the softer side and this time it was a bit too firm for my liking, but I ate the whole bowl with no complaints. It's a great safe option for folks who want to avoid something spicy and want something savory. Be warned though: the bowls are deceptive. They don't look large, but they will fill you up for sure. If you want a great ramen spot, Tonkotsu is worth the attention! I'll continue to come as often as I can. Tip: getting to the parking here can be difficult, so make sure you pay close attention to where you are able to pull in!

Yelp
The beef in the udon unpleasantly dissolved in my mouth, but everything else we ordered was good. This included the tonkotsu ramen and the Japanese creamy soda which we were surprised to find at the same price as you would at an asian grocery store. We were too full to even finish the gyoza. The menu is quite intriguing. I wanted to try the gyozachos, beef bulgogi fries, and brisket dry noodles...Who knows when I'll be back :( The painting of the wave on the wall is super cool. The customer service was the best part of the meal. Great host.

Yelp
Tasty food, Cozy restaurant & bar, Good price. Not taking so long after you order it until it serve to the table.

Yelp
The restaurant smells like bathroom, the waiter is extremely lazy and non attentive. She seems to be doing homework on her laptop instead of paying attention to customers. I asked her what the noodle options were and she said there is a wide ramen noodle, when it came out it was udon noodles. She didn't disclose this at all when ordering. The broth was watered down and the chicken Karrange was chewy and dry. It came out a few minutes after we ordered it so I know it was already made. There is also a 4% fee for using credit card that they don't disclose. What type of restaurants still pass this fee down to the customer? Lastly, there is a sign that says 15% off if you give them a 5 star review. So you def can't trust their ratings, even when incentivizing their customers they still have a subpar rating. I'd avoid this place.

Yelp
Lovely hot pot restaurant. Meat and veggies are fresh, broth is great. Service is attentive.

Yelp
My husband loved his brisket ramen which was flavorful from what I tasted. However, the tonkotso ramen did not agree with me at all. There was an off taste that should've warned me but my stomach has been upset ever since.

Neeh B.

Yelp
Still one of the best Ramen places in Salt Lake City! They're consistency and attention to detail the second to none and I appreciate their amazing take on Ramen! I had the shio it was great! Really liked the chicken curry as well!
google avatar

Tracie L.

Yelp
Not the best ramen I've had, but not the worst for UT standards. I would say this is slightly below Jinya ramen, but I like going here because there is no long wait and it's conveniently connected to their shabu bar next door in case I change my mind from wanting ramen :) The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty cool and service is always on point. The waitress always comes around filling our waters and checking in on us. Food usually comes out fast too! We've pretty much tried a variety of things on their menu Takoyaki - pretty good, I like that the size of each ball wasn't huge and they gave you a good amount. Tebasaki - chicken wings were a decent size and I LOVE the sauce on it. If you've ever had San Tung's in SF the sauce is very similar and it's bomb. The wings were light and crispy when fresh. Would order again Gyoza - just like average gyozas Bulgogi fries - they sound better than they taste unfortunately. I thought the concept was cool, but I think it would be better if they had regular fries instead of waffle cut fries. The beef wasn't tender either. Beef & Shrimp Udon - I had high expectations since I was expecting it to be somewhat close to marugame udon. Not even close lol, but it's a good sized portion and the egg was poached perfect. The beef again wasn't tender. Tonkotsu ramen - MUCH better than the udon. Big portion, the broth could be more hearty, it tastes like it hasn't been simmering long enough. Not super fatty rich broth that I'm used to at other places. I like their char siu here it's a good balance of fatty/lean

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places to get ramen. Always such great service here and we always come back! The ambiance is very dark and moody which I like at night. It's really cool. Food is always great! Would highly recommend!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the curry ramen. Not salty, but hot and deelish. I ordered a cup of hot water to pour into it so I can savor the rest of the broth lol!! I was drinking it up.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
The Ramen here is the absolute best in the state. I recommend the Tantanmen and the Takoyaki! The service is also phenomenal as well.
google avatar

Mae W.

Yelp
For those trying the ramen or rice plates aside from the shabu shabu, food is ok. I honestly feel like the food caters to those who cannot handle spice at all. Katsu curry bowl was very bland. Curry came out barely lukewarm and the spices in the curry was barely present. Rice tasted soggy (too much water added when cooked). Katsu is bland and not crispy. The chicken wings was like the only good tasting dish. It was crispy and the sweet sauce paired well. The karaage dish tastes good with the dipping sauce, but without the sauce its ok tasting. It was definitely not crispy either. I'm used to eating karaage that has a crunch! Customer service is fine but food is ok.

Tessa P.

Yelp
Used to be my favorite but now it's not worth it... expensive low quality ramen. And pretty sure their music is just someone's Spotify liked songs. We heard Cotton Eye Joe club mix then a smooth jazz O Holy Night.
google avatar

Yelp
Tonkotsu is so good . It's great quality Ramen I was very impressed and it has a beautiful atmosphere with nice lighting and paintings on the wall. The service was fast, we didn't wait at all. The ramen here is actually very filling, it's full of flavor and milky in consistency. Overall, the components of the ramen were in perfect harmony, creating a truly memorable ramen experience. Laa the manger of the Ramen spot came by to greet us and was very sweet. 5 stars from me Ryans food Adventures on .

Yelp
Been craving ramen and my wife and I decided to try out Tonkotsu. We started with the Takoyaki (octopus balls), and they were much more appetizing than they sounded. They did not have an overpowering fish-taste or smell and came topped with picked ginger. Tip: eat the takoyaki with the picked ginger. Also, the sauce complimented the octopus very well. 5/5 I ordered the Tonkotsu, and my wife the Curry Ramen. Sad to say, the ramen was a bit disappointing. The boiled egg was a bit cold, as if they were chilled before serving, the ramen wasn't as flavorful as we hoped, and the giant tonkotsu was dry. That being said, the takoyaki was amazing and I will come back just for this appetizer and I'll try another dish.
google avatar

Kadee C.

Yelp
The service was good, but the food was just okay. The noodles were good, but the flavor of the broth was very bland. The facility is clean and the atmosphere was great. Happy with their service.

Yelp
Been craving some warm soup/ramen over the past few weeks, especially with this cold weather we've been receiving. I tried Tonkotsu this week with a friend. Service was quick when we first sat down, but after we got our food no one really checked on us for drink refills or anything. Staff was friendly. We both didn't love the noodles, they were so tangly & hard to break apart. I had the veggie miso & overall I really enjoyed it! Flavors were great. I added an egg to it & the egg was cooked perfectly. The mushrooms were terrible though. I couldn't cut them & they were so rubbery. I kept wondering if it was octopus instead of mushrooms! I know it wasn't but it freaked me out enough that I pulled them all from my soup. My friend had the tonkotsu ramen. He loved the menma (bamboo shoots) in this dish. Was a little hesitant at first but ended up really liking them. We also tried the veggie harumaki. These are essentially veggie egg rolls. These were delicious! Great flavor! The sweet chili sauce was really good paired with these.

Yelp
First time eating here. Totally disappointed with this place. I had the curry chicken rice bowl The curry tasted like starchy/corn-starch, with a hint of curry. Not what I would consider curry, not a good flavor at all. Three carrots pieces, and same with the potatoes. I don't recommend this place, nor will I be going back.

Shania S.

Yelp
Egg was very disappointing and cold in the middle. The egg is always my favorite part in ramen and this one was bad. The pork in the ramen tasted microwaved.
google avatar

Ruby C.

Yelp
Worst ramen I've ever had. I got the curry ramen and it was horrible. Waste of money, I had to throw it away. Fast, friendly service however.
google avatar

R Y.

Yelp
This is the most overrated ramen shop in slc. It was MUCH better when it first opened years ago. Yes service is terrible and food quality is average at best. Look elsewhere.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
This place is great! The gyoza were incredibly flavorful. The tonkatsu ramen was delicious. My picky kid told me it was one of his favorite meals in recent history. The service was prompt and efficient. We will be back again soon.
google avatar

Timmy D.

Yelp
Tonkatsu ramen is one of my favorite ramen bars in Salt Lake City. I only get one type of ramen here and it's the Tantanmen. It's their most spicy menu item but it's really not that spicy. The egg is perfectly soft boiled and the pork is always melt-in-your-mouth tender. The broth is heavier (in this item) but it's not overly heavy and it is possible to sip down to the bottom of the bowl. Environment/Service: Modern rustic. Nice ambient lighting during the day and low light at night. Great service and always friendly. FYI First timers: The "ladle" next to your chopsticks is indeed used as a spoon. (I've been asked more than once)
google avatar

Elias M.

Yelp
Such a good place!! Vibes were good. Food was very tasty! Beef bulgogi fries is a must. Super appetizing. Tonkotsu ramen was good as well! And the ice cream mochi really did hit the sweet spot!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Ramen for dinner and the young lady who served us was awesome. I ordered their namesake Tonkotsu Ramen with no customizations but Mom made a few alterations. Our waitress was great with recommendations since Mom doesn't eat pork or beef, so we managed a bowl with a chicken broth base and a big piece of katsu chicken breast and then she was even able to substitute the ramen noodles for udon noodles. Mom was ecstatic. My ramen was delish. Rich broth, plenty of flavor, lots of delicious noodles and a tasty slice of roast pork with a nicely soft-boiled egg. Yum. Definitely worth a stop if you're up for soup.
google avatar

Hugh S.

Yelp
More terrible food. If you eat in this neighborhood this is what you can expect the food everywhere is terrible the Mexican food, the Chinese food I'm staying at the sleep in and everything in this neighborhood is blah.
google avatar

Gemini U.

Yelp
We were greeted right away when we walked in, and was seated promptly. We were handed a menu in a timely manner. The waitress came over to take our order. I explain I've never been there before, and she gave us a handful of pictures of some of the menu items along with a description of the most popular items on the menu. We ordered according to the pictures, and when our food came out, it look nothing like the pictures, and it tasted awful, I'm sorry to say. My Raman had a layer of grease laying on top of the soup broth, the meat was fatty, the noodles were wheat noodles, and they were very Al dente. I won't be back it just was not a good tasting lunch.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
Tried the bao appetizer--the chicken one was my favorite. I got the Tonkotsu ramen which was really tasty. The server was super helpful and nice. She recommended my partner try the udon noodles which are much fatter, and he liked theM a lot. The restaurant is really cute inside as well with wall murals and fun vibe.

Carrie K.

Yelp
Service wasn't good and food was mediocre I don't think there is 50 word to say about this company it's just so forgettable.

E M.

Yelp
We got the Katsu curry bowl with Tonkatsu. There are literally just 4 pieces of meat. And they are dry. The curry doesn't have any taste. Wouldn't come back again and can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I'd give them no start if it's an option.
google avatar

Branden W.

Yelp
Food was ok, but the overpowering smell of nail polish remover made it taste terrible. Beef Brisket Dry Noodle had lots of meat and good noodles.

Yelp
Mixed feelings about this place - the interior is trendy and beautiful and the service is friendly and fast. Appetizers were solid, but half of our party left dissatisfied with the mains they had ordered. We stopped in around 8pm on a weeknight and the place was pretty empty. (To be fair, Tonkotsu does close at 9pm on weeknights.) We ordered the wings and edamame to start - the wings were pretty tasty and had decent crunch; the edamame was fresh, but was salted with table salt rather than flaky salt and could have used more salt in general. One of our party ordered a torikatsu curry rice bowl at a ramen shop (which was probably her mistake) - we knew she wasn't enjoying it when we asked if the deep-fried meat was crispy and she responded, "I'm not sure." The curry was also a little too sweet, even for Japanese curry. Onto the ramen: since our mains and appetizers all came out at the same time, it's possible that the noodles in the Tonkotsu ramen overcooked in the time it took me to eat two chicken wings. But they just didn't have that chew that I enjoy in my ramen noodles - they weren't quite mushy, but were very, very soft. (This is partially my preference: in general, I enjoy thick, textured noodles over thin, straight ones.) I can usually polish off a whole bowl of ramen, but at Tonkotsu, I ended up leaving half the bowl behind. I did enjoy the pork belly, the broth, and the soft-boiled egg, and also did hear from another member of my party that the Tantanmen was good. All in all, I'd say Tonkotsu is worth a shot - it's not my favorite ramen place in SLC/Murray, but the interior is really beautiful and service is great. Though it's not high on my list of places to revisit, if they offered thick chewy noodles for their ramen, I'd give them another try.
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
This better than average ramen spot has a lot to choose from, including several variations of ramen. If you are looking for something different, try the "wrong ramen". It has many of the delicious flavors you may look for in a traditional ramen, but mixes them with some "Hawaiian" style ingredients including a fried egg, spam, and bacon. There's even large chunks of BBQ pork. Let's just call it porkalicious. Very tasty and the closet thing to "breakfast" ramen I've ever had. Overall, this place has a good vibe, attentive service and good prices. Definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Pretty good ramen! I had a spicy ramen and added spam. The menu is creative and has something for everyone! Not quite my favorite ramen place, but definitely give it a shot if you're in the area.
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Ramen restaurants. So good! I cannot remember what I got though, but I enjoyed them.
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
The chasu on top is very nice. The egg was great, the ramen was great, but the price is a little high compared to oath top ramen houses.

Malcolm H.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Great ambiance! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! It was good. I liked it.
google avatar

Diamond K.

Yelp
Love how you get your own personal shabu so you can customize your broth to your own liking. Downside is it's not "ayce" so you order one type of meat and pay extra for any other protein/noodles. Every time I come which is for lunch pretty early, they've ran out of udon. Or I have to pay extra just to ask the next door restaurant to order it while having to run my card on two separate transactions. Service is really slow but they're nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Here comes "Judgmental John the Ramen Snob"! A friend of mine from my grade school days in Japan let me know to check this spot if I was in the mood for 日本風ラーメン. It's location is not the easiest to get to, especially if the road next to it is busy. But there's enough parking in front and nearby, so no issues with that. Our first hostess was really nice but was a bit too busy mingling with friends when we first arrived, so we stood at the hostess stand waiting aimlessly for a couple minutes. Once she noticed us, we were sat and given some ice cold water right away. (NOTE: She may have been a family friend of the business who didn't actually work there.) I ordered their signature Tonkotsu with extra chashu, while my lady ordered the same but without the extra chashu. From the time we ordered to the time we received our bowls was a whopping two minutes. So, points for speed. And we were served by a different waitress/hostess, who had been a little busy behind the counter when we arrived, but once finished she was taking care of most of the customers. She was really on the ball. The dish itself was good. Not the best but I'd eat it again if friends wanted to go. Portion size was reasonable, although I can see some Americans bitching about it. The noodles were cooked somewhere between "futsu" (普通 - regular) and "katai" (硬い - firm). The broth was not as rich as I prefer, but the flavor was good and uniform throughout. I found the toppings below the placement of the noodles, which signals to me they were probably refrigerated (I could tell when I bit into the bean sprouts) and put under the noodles to be heated by the broth. As a ramen guy, that was a first for me at a ラーメン屋; toppings are usually... Well... On top. Presentation! The "ajitama" egg was flavored well and only a tiny bit overcooked. (I should've ordered an extra egg because I love that flavor.) The chashu pieces were very thick, which I really appreciated. There was a little bit too much fat on the slices, but that worked for me. Total cost for everything plus tip was about $30. So, fair prices for a place like this in Utah. I will have to come back through for the "shabu shabu" (しゃぶしゃぶ) hot pot though. I don't care if it's summer, hot pot is good to me any time of the year.
google avatar

Penny M.

Yelp
The food here is delicious. The presentation of the food is unique and very nice. Makes you excited that they put more time into making the presentation of your meal Look nice too. Overall great experience and great people.

Ed C.

Yelp
The owner should stop parking in Handicap parking ! Consent and the food is good ! It could be a little cleaner The employees should stop handing around the rear bar area There was smoking near the door by employees I will still go there but a few improvements need to be made
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
There were 4 of us, and I ordered the konbu sauce, but I should have ordered the tonkatsu sauce, which everyone else in my party ordered. Everything was good though, although I wish they provided more noodles (hidden at the bottom).
