My dining experience at Tonno was disappointing and underwhelming, to say the least. Being Italian and from a neighboring town, I was SUPER excited in thinking that this modern restaurant, which has sister chains in the north end, would be my new go-to spot for the summer.
Driving down North Ave., my three sisters and I could see people enjoying intimate meals next to lit heater towers on the outdoor patio; we had to try it!
We greeted the hostess and asked to be placed inside. Seeing that we did not make a reservation, she threw us outside even despite my warning her that I did not want to freeze outside on this windy evening on June 1st. (Gotta love NE). We were seated outside, nevertheless, and assured the fire pit would keep us comfortable during our meal. We went with the flow. We got there at 7pm and were not served our meals until 8:45pm. By that time, people were leaving the interior of the restaurant but we were still being seated outside, freezing and hungry!
The menu options and variety were disappointing. We each ordered a pasta dish in a half size at half price at the recommendation of our waitress, Sam (who was a sweetheart and the reason we stayed); bucatini alla carbonara, tagliatelle bolognese, spaghetti and shrimp fra diavolo, and the orrechiette rabe and sausage. Upon receiving the check, we saw that we were charged for 4 full size dishes.
The pasta was over cooked, a rookie mistake as homemade pasta cooks quickly. My sister's bolognese sauce was acidic, bland and the meat was dry. The spaghetti fra diavolo and shrimp came with only three shrimps, all of which were overcooked, a sauce that was not spicy and that did not taste or have the aroma of fish in it at all. The carbonara I ordered was extremely bland, used a substitute meat when pancetta should have been used, and had zero pepper. Sam said eggs were used, but that is questionable. The rabe and sausage again was bland. We had to ask for extra cheese and pepper but by the time it came, our pasta was already cold from just being seated outside.
We didn't know how much longer we'd have to wait to put in orders for the second plates so we decided to cut our losses and leave. I had such high expectations because Tonno should have been as delicious and authentic a restaurant as you would expect to find in the North End. It certainly is just as expensive as the North End!!! After this experience, I can confidently say that the North End is worth the drive!
Thank you for reading! Happy dining!
