I’ve been ordering and going to this place for years. It is my favorite sushi in the city! M was our waitress for this particular occasion and she is the sweetest person ever! My favorite rolls are the Alaskan, Mexican and Bagel. And the gyoza is always delicious too. I got ramen for the first time and it was a nice hearty portion bursting with good flavors. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Stepping down into Tono, I'm greeted by a friendly, "Hello!" and a calm atmosphere. Nice, simple decor on the walls, an old carpet attests to the longevity of this place. There's a few parties here, but not too many. We're early for dinner and it's a weekday. The two of us take our seats, around 5:45 and begin to order from the menu. Happy hour lasts from 5 to 7:30, more than enough time for us to devour about 60 pieces of sushi at $1 apiece. The pieces are modest, but adorned with a generous helping of fish. The salmon is just the right amount of fatty, the yellowtail fresh and delicate. I tried the Anago and marinated mackerel, and loved both. The Tamago is, without a doubt the absolute best I've ever had at any sushi restaurant. Service was quick and attentive. Different generations of a family hard at work. We eventually waddled out a little after 7, bellies full and palates satisfied, joining the throngs of diners enjoying the Woodley Park summer evening. We are lucky to live so close to such a good sushi spot, and which offers great deals through its happy hour. I would recommend that you come on a weekday or earlier in the hour to avoid a wait, as I'd imagine the place gets full on a prime night.

Google
I love this place. Come here often for happy hour sushi and it’s always satisfying. Good beer prices and the happy hour special always causes me to over order!

Google
I love good sushi restaurants and this one is okay. I sat at one of the dining tables instead of the sushi bar which was full. I can tell that the owners are in tune with the seasons as evident with their December roll. It's a neighborhood establishment and the staff provided a comfortable dining experience. If I lived in Woodley Park, I would visit at least 2 to 3 times a month.

Google
Absolutely fantastic happy hour (shhhhh don't tell!) $4-5 boozy drinks and $2 per 2 pieces of nigiri! That fish tastes fresh and sizes were decent. Excellent customer service even tho they were busy. Highly recommend

Michael Ensor

Google
The happy hour is legit. It’s $2 per sushi, which is actually 2 pieces so it’s still $1 don’t let the menus confuse. The fish is honestly some of the more fresh fish I’ve had for sushi. Also with $4 house saki this is a can’t miss chill happy hour in DC Adams Morgan area

Google
I was craving sushi… I stumbled to this place and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is good. I had a miso soup, the dragon roll, and several nigiri pieces (salmon, tuna, squid, and shrimp) Oh I was so happy!

Oludotun Babayemi

Google
I like the customer service. I always look forward to the Lunch Menu especially the Set number 1 under $12 for such a healthy food. I so like their miso soup. Also a great place to have dinner.

Yelp
$1 sushi. We came here for HH and it was actually very good. They had a special going on with $1 sushi. Let me tell you I wish I ordered more.

Yelp
affordable sushi that didn't put me in the hospital? rare and found here! - to state the obvious look at that mountain of a roll, the volcano roll was insane. a california roll stacked on top of eachother, covered COVERED in kani salad. this was amazing - the other rolls are the shittake mushroom roll (which was tasty but strong teriyaki flavor), the tuna and avocado, crunchy salmon, and eel somethin roll lol - the fish was great quality and did not break the bank. the rice was soft and the rolls with avocado were stuffed with large chunks of perfectly ripe avocado - the inside of the restaurant is fun, low seating and lots of decor, but definitely not the most aesthetic/fancy/focused on quality service. also the happy hour deal is seemingly not real (still good prices in general)

Yelp
I do not have the adequate words to explain just how wonderfully happy we are with this place! The cleanliness, the quaint ambiance, the selection and The STAFF! Oh! By the way. The food was A May Zing! Quit reading and go there!

Yelp
We came here for the happy hour, but the website supposedly isn't updated. Based on the server, the happy hour page on the website is pre-covid , so like 3 years old The only happy hour is really their drinks, since I think their sashimi is always priced the same as well. We got a couple rolls, some sashimi, and drunken noodles. The drunken noodles were bland, feels like there was no flavor. One positive was that the veggies were fresh and had plenty of chicken. We added soy sauce and The sashimi was good, we got the yellowtail. The rolls themselves were not that good either unfortunately. Lots of rice with each bite, and I didn't think they had much flavor either.

Yelp
After seeing the ads for their happy hour which sounds like a great deal I decided to finally check this place out. I must say I was disappointed that despite advertising their sushi happy hour outside of their restaurant, on their website, and on their menu they actually only have drinks as part of the special. I was told that their happy hour only applies to drinks. I got a lychee cocktail for $5 which was pretty good and had fresh lychee in it. That being said, I kept an open mind and tried an entree and some sushi. I was unfortunately disappointed by both. The drunken noodles were over cooked and too sticky and missing serious flavor.. even with adding soy sauce and sriracha it tasted pretty bland. We tried a couple rolls and nigiri and felt the rolls all had too much rice and the fish did not taste fresh. If you're looking for good sushi, I would probably skip this place. The service was pretty good and we were able to get seated without a reservation right away.

Yelp
I rarely write bad reviews, but I am a bit upset with this place. I'll start with the bad then the good. At the end of my meal, I was told that gratuities was already included. I asked how much, and the waitress said 20%. Mind you, I was dining by myself and didn't even get a chance to tip what I thought was fair. Except it wasn't 20%. It was 35% and they were trying to pull a fast one on me. To say the least, I'm upset. In terms of the good, I had Tonkatsu ramen, spicy salmon, and gyoza. All which were okay tasting. But I was in a rush and didn't have time to argue the bill, poor service, or the fact they automatically put a 35% tip on my tab. Very poor business. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The food was okay tasting, but the service was poor and the restaurant automatically added a 35% tip to my bill, even though I was dining by myself. I would not return to this restaurant.

Yelp
I live nearby this restaurant and frequently walk past their $1 per piece sushi happy hour sign so I decided to try it out for this reason. Upon sitting down it turned out that it was $2 per piece and the deal was strictly for nigiri. I found this to be a bit misleading and upsetting. The actual sushi we did get was fine but nothing amazing. Service was nice and ambiance was cozy.

Yelp
Love the variety of their menu that placates my entire family from parents to kids. Very friendly service. Outdoor seating when the weather is nice.

Yelp
Quality/taste: We tried the fresh salmon, fresh tuna, yellowtail, snapper, marinated mackerel, shrimp, sea eel, and salmon toro sushi. The salmon toro was not part of the HH special but we got it anyway because I love toro. It was so good, and probably my favorite part of the meal! We got two orders of the salmon toro because it was so good! The other $1 sushi that we had that stuck out to me was the fresh tuna and fresh salmon sushi! They were both super fresh and melts in your mouth type sushi! I definitely was impressed with the quality of cuts these were especially with it only being $1!! Everything else was also really good. No complaints on the quality. They definitely don't skimp on the portions/cuts either, which I love! Everything tasted fresh and good. We also got the Japanese crepe and matcha ice cream dessert at the end to finish our meal and that was also delicious! Service: Good service. Our server was nice but we did have to flag her down every time we needed something. She didn't come to our table to check on us enough, I'd say. Although she was very accommodating since our dessert came out wrong and she fixed it by giving us a free matcha ice cream! Environment: The restaurant was kind of underground/basement vibe. I liked that and it gave it a more authentic feel to the experience. Everything was clean. Price: My friend and I went specifically because of their happy hour special from 5-7:30pm. We weren't sure if the promotion was only for those hours or not, but when we got there, we were told it was only 5-7:30 everyday! The deal was for $1 sushi (only the ones on the list) and $4 beers! We thought it was a great deal so I think it was well worth the visit at these awesome prices!! Must try if you are thinking about coming here! Come during their happy hour! I think the quality of sushi was really good for the happy hour deal. It exceeded my expectations.

Yelp
Our favorite place but recently we weren't able to get their phone to connect or order online. We're worried it's closed

Yelp
Delicious sushi in a cute Woodley Park restaurant. The service is very friendly, and the happy hour deals are good, but the $1 sushi only applies to certain pieces on the menu--a little misleading. Pretty prompt service and very tasty sushi! Especially loved the crispy salmon roll.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this place and our waitress was so great! We ate outside and ordered 2 types of ramen- both delicious. The Drunken Noodles were full of flavor and the beef was perfect. I ended up eating it all even though I was full. My friends have gotten take out from here and a few times and always enjoyed it, but were excited to find it was even better in person. We got cocktails and they were yummy. They were the kind you only get one of because they are so sweet, but a good indulgence. Kind of like a jolly rancher. Our waitress was attentive and sweet enough to offer to take our picture when she saw us struggling for a selfie. Definitely visit! *This was a last minute stop so I didn't check Yelp before I stopped- a rare time I'm glad for it because we really did enjoy our food!

Viv C.

Yelp
Recently started coming here. Friendly servers and tasty food. Love their happy hour list of sushi. The rice is good and the fish good. Great prices. It is not super fancy by any means and seems to be a place for the neighborhood to come in for a bite. A go to place me now!

Yelp
Very disappointed, the app states that they are open, drive 30 minutes to the establishment, find parking on a crowded street, walk to the restaurant sign says open so I walk in they tell that they don't open till 5pm. So why would you advertise that you're open at 3pm and then not officially open till 5pm. Wasted gas and my time just to try a sushi spot that is rated 4stars to be disappointed and turned away. Not cool to waste folks time and gas.

Mar I.

Yelp
I am vegan and came with non vegan friends. They enjoyed their food and I was happy my vegan meal as well. The staff were able to make some of their sushi rolls vegan for me (dragon roll with sweet potato inside and avocado on top).

Yelp
I am usually not a fan of East Asian restaurants that try to broaden their appeal from their central national cuisine by including a handfuls of dishes from other East Asian countries, so my hackles naturally went up when my wife, having decided that we simply must have sushi this evening, took us on a walk to Woodley Park and then here because the place I had targeted turned out to be takeout only This place was OK. We had the sushi dinner, a reasonable collection of items albeit a bit long on the California Roll, and the negimaki appetizer although I would rather have expected an appetizer to come BEFORE dinner rather than at the end of it. Very weak beer list, OK collection of sakes
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
I have only been here once but came away with positive memories about the food and experience. Located in Woodley Park, this is a perfectly nice destination for some sushi and Japanese fare.
google avatar

Olivia I.

Yelp
Unmatched prices for DC sushi during happy hour. While the inside can get crowded, the patio usually has open seating and the sushi is well worth the price. I'd recommend any of their nigiri and their spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls are great too.
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
Its my first time dining at this restaurant, and first impressions really are everything! The place is small as hell, it took my waitress 15 minutes to greet us and another 5 mins to even take our order. She never asked if we wanted appetizers or anything to drink. Just sped off so i yell to one of the workers so i can place my appetizer order. IF YOU ARE HUNGRY DONT COME HERE YOU WILL WAIT FOREVER!!! My food never came im pissed and i will not be back

Alex B.

Yelp
Yummy! And great service. Cute spot. Enjoyed our date night and will be returning for happy hour.
google avatar

Debra K.

Yelp
So slow. Great happy hour specials but soooo slow. The waitress finally brought us some edamame as a peace offering. I always have high hopes for seafood and sushi when I am near a coast. Honestly, I've had better in Oklahoma.
google avatar

Luana C.

Yelp
I tried this place exactly once and not since then. I am suspicious of the quality of the ingredients and reluctant to risk my health. The taste was also meh towards bad (bland, boring, a little off), the service was slow, and the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. I am surprised this place is still in business, given that right next door there is a better sushi place and most high-end grocery stores carry superior sushi rolls to what you can find here. Beware!
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Toni sushi is great for a basic traditional sushi fix. Prices are reasonable, portions are on the larger side, and service is spectacular. The staff are very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Their happy hour special is unbeatable.

Vivian C.

Yelp
This place was great and I'll definitely be coming back! My SO and I ordered 4 rolls, 4 pieces of nigiri, 2 appetizers, and 2 drinks (happy hour) for ~$70. We went on a Saturday evening and had no wait. The only thing I didn't love was how much crunch they put in their crunchy rolls, but I still enjoyed everything I ate!
google avatar

Heather Irene H.

Yelp
Every time I am in the neighborhood I order sushi from Tono. It's delicious and reasonably priced. My favorite is the Hamachi Maki with added avocado. The Ikura is also much fresher than other restaurants. I also like the fun, underground vibe of the restaurant--and they have a fabulous happy hour!

Michael A.

Yelp
Great sushi! Great service! A local sushi spot that does great takeout and has a committed local following in Woodley Park.
google avatar

Mary G.

Yelp
What a wonderful place to eat after a long day at the zoo! Loved the happy hour sushi.

Ang H.

Yelp
They have a great happy hour deal. I always order a bunch of salmon nigiri and it always taste great.
google avatar

Roya B.

Yelp
We ordered the edamame, wasabi pork shumai, and crunchy tuna avocado from the $3 tapas menu, 4 pieces of assorted nigiri, and the ramen with breaded pork. We added a couple things to the ramen for additional charges. Everything came out at a good pace. The edamame, crunchy tuna avocado, and nigiri were A-OK. Nothing blew me away. The pork shumai and the ramen were misses.

Yelp
An authentic, busy Japanese restaurant with very slow service. Quality and quantity of bento box and grilled yellowtail jaw were good, but very slow. Do not come here if you are in a hurry. They do not take reservation either. It's first come first served, and there's always a line at the door (including people waiting for take out). Do NOT sit at the "tatami" seats by the window unless your legs are strong. These aren't those seats that allow you to "cheat" (as can be found in Japan) where there is a space under the table for your legs to go down (thereby creating the illusion that you are seated cross legged on a tatami, dining casually, while in reality you aren't bending your legs on the floor at all). Dinner there can be quite a challenge. They look comfy in photos but are uncomfortable in reality.
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
4/5 stars because the happy hour deal is so good. I came with a friend and we were seated immediately. The sushi also came out pretty quickly given how crowded it was. The nigiri was my favorite (I got yellowtail and eel), and it was only $1 per piece!! Would recommend sticking with nigiri because neither of us were huge fans of our rolls

Mj G.

Yelp
I have been a regular at Tono for a few years and can't recommend it enough. It's a super friendly place, with delicious (and cheap) happy hour drinks, and great food.

S. E.

Yelp
We had such a great experience here that we went 2 nights in a row. The food is exceptionally fresh and good. The vibe is local neighborhood and the owner and staff treat you as such. Everything we had was delicious. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely return.
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
THE SUSHI IS $1! YES YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY! ONE DOLLAR! Ok so here's the deal. Daily Happy Hour from 5:30 to 7:30 where nigiri is one buckaroo. There's a SOLID HH menu with tons of apps for $3 and sushi rolls for less than $5. The selection was pretty freaking stellar. Let me see if I can remember everything I ate. Spicy baby octopus, seaweed salad, crunchy tuna avocado, edamame, grilled tofu with miso dressing, tuna nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, snapper nigiri, bagel roll, spicy crunch tuna roll, and dragon roll. I think that covers it lol. GET THE CRUNCHY TUNA AVOCADO! If there's one thing you take away from this review, freaking get the crunchy tuna avocado, it was amazing. Everything I ate was really really good, the sushi was very fresh and everything was just so flavorful. Our server was great and we never wanted for anything, she was the perfect amount of attentiveness that we needed. This was one of the best sushi meals I've had in recent memory. My one friend doesn't even eat sushi and she was pumped with the non sushi selection that was also very very reasonably priced (she went with pad thai in case you were wondering). I will absolutely be back here. The. sushi. is. one. dollar!
google avatar

Tabitha P.

Yelp
Pretty good sushi. Nothing blew us away (especially for the prices) but it's a solid place.

Kim B.

Yelp
Tono has been a consistent neighborhood asset offering good sushi and other Asian specialties. I like their Yakisoba and several of the sushi choices can elevate your taste buds. They survived the pandemic and deserve to prosper. Try them out.
google avatar

Hannah T.

Yelp
On a snowy day I ordered sushi from a random sushi place that had came up on my nearby search and it was the best sushi I had had in DC since moving here from New York. I took a photo and logged it for later. Months and months later, today, after leaving another sushi restaurant out of town, I reminisced about this place, drooling over the special roll I ate that day, not remembering the name. No joke- my boyfriend and I just spent 30 minutes digging through our text messages, my emails, my credit card history just to remember the name TONO SUSHI. Now it is saved in my bookmarks and I will never make that same mistake again. Eat here. and order the Double Salmon Roll.
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
I was slightly disappointed with the food here. I had shrimp pad Thai and the sirarcha tuna sushi. Both of which were just ok. The space is like a hole in the wall style which was great, the food just not
google avatar

Cat H.

Yelp
I've eaten and taken out from this place. Several times and have been very happy. This last time we had tonkatsu and some sushi rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious. The Toniatsu was crisp without being greasy. The vegetables were pickled which was a nice fresh change. Prices are inexpensive for the area. Service was very attentive. Sushi was delicious. FYI, there are two Japanese restaurants in this building. This place is downstairs. .

Yelp
Eli our server really made our visit as the food was ok. They offer a great variety for Happy from 5:00pm - 7:30pm with $1 select sushi, $3 rolls, $5 house wine, beers & speciality drinks, as my gal pal got the Lychee Mojito, she was pleased. The food comes in nice size portions, yet some items didn't slap me in my sushi palate. Towards the end, I saw other patrons eating stir fry, drunken noodle & curry dishes, so good to know there is a diverse of Asian flare to offer. Whether HH or regular dining Tono seemed to have a steady flow of customers, even with the presence of teenagers...never too young to expand your taste buds. A quick hop, skip & a jump from the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Metro, & there's parking after 5pm on Calvert Street. Patio seating provides you a non-stop people watching view & if you are able to request Eli, do so...he has the personality of a Comedy Show MC with his effortlessly coolness.

Yelp
Cute place. It's a sushi, bento box place: food is good, satisfying and service is genuinely polite. I'd, definitely, dine here again.

Yelp
Considering that weather has changed for the better, my friends and I decided to take a stroll out at the zoo. Afterwards, we walked along Connecticut to find a place to grab something to eat. We have heard some great things about Tono Sushi so we decided to go there. When we arrived, it was after lunch hour. When we asked to sit outside, the server suggested that we should sit inside. It seemed like he did not want to go in/out of the restaurant and preferred to stay inside. When we spoke with the manager (Pete), manager told us that we were able to sit outside. So we did. They offer a HH menu on Sundays, all nigiris are $1. We thought we would try some along with other dishes. I also got the tonkatsu ramen with charsiu. When we got the nigiris, they looked like a huge joke. They were tiny bite-size pieces that were laughable, with barely any fish on them! When I asked the manager, Pete, about it, he said that is what is provided at HH price. Nowhere on the menu does it say that the sushi would shrink during HH. As if I went to an American restaurant and got a burger at HH price, I would get a slider instead?! In addition, the ramen was way too salty. The noodles were overcooked and soggy. They charge $2-3 for anything extra! Even things that are supposed to come with ramen, such as bamboo shoots, nori and naurto. The worst part is that no one even attempted service recovery. They brushed us off and gave us "this is what you get" kind of attitude... very discouraging! To me, management and leadership is very questionable at this restaurant. This was a very disappointing experience. I am assuming it has gone down hill and is no longer like the old days. I do not plan on returning again

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood sushi restaurant. A huge plus is the EVERYDAY HAPPY HOUR from 5-7. The menu is also pretty expansive, which is nice for someone who likes choices. Generally the sushi was quite tasty- but the spicy tuna was a tad too spicy and the wasabi wasn't that soft. The eel roll is a nice combination as well as the Alaska roll with its crunch. All in all, a pleasant experience with above average service. Can't beat the happy hour prices & variety! One negative was the women's bathroom. They are shaped like boxes - whereas most stalls have an opening above the door- so I nearly snapped my finger trying to close the door from the top. Not a huge deal, but a bit of an odd construction. A renovation would do wonders for the bathroom!

Yelp
!!!DO NOT ORDER FROM LINK ABOVE. RESTAURANT IS RUNNING A SCAM!!!! You will not get your order but you will be charged!!! Not one to typically write reviews but just had an awful experience w Tono. Tonight my girlfriend and I visited website listed above by Yelp (and confirmed by Tono) ordertonosushi.com. We placed our order on this service and were charged immediately by the restaurant for our order and told to look out for a confirmation email. We received a confirmation email with order # that said look out for another email when ready. That email did not come so we contacted the restaurant via the phone number listed on ordertonosushi.com. The restaurant said that they "no longer use that website", had no record of the order and the owner would contact us shortly. After about 15 minutes the owner, Peter, called and said that their website has been hacked (?) and that there was nothing they could do for us. When we informed Peter that the website is linked on all food service websites and that we would like either a refund or our order fulfilled, Peter said that there was nothing they could do and that they would not be honoring the order FROM THEIR OWN WEBSITE or issuing a refund. Peter then said that it is not his fault and that we should contact our credit card for a refund. It seems like a scam they are running claiming to not run a website that (is linked on all sites, has their phone number listed, and has their most recent menu) and taking customers money with no intention of fulfilling their order. Even if Peters claims of 'hacking' were true, which I truly believe it is not, this all could have been avoided had Peter admitted that this was his fault and that he should ensure that his websites listed to order food from are up to date and that they would either A) issue a refund or B) fill the order. Nope. Peter insisted this was our fault (?) and that it's our responsibility to get the website changed and attempt a refund from the "scammers". DO NOT ORDER -- FRAUD I have screenshots that show the website listed, the ordering options (including their most up to date menu listed), and the confirmation of charges and confirmation of order email. Reach out if you want to see the confirmation emails, again we never write reviews so I'm not sure how to link them to this post.

Yelp
Loved this cute sushi restaurant in Adam's Morgan! Went with my two roommates and we got 29 pieces of sushi: salmon with avocado roll, Mexican roll, spicy tuna roll, Alaskan roll, shrimp tempura roll. Our favorite was the Mexican roll!! Would definitely recommend
google avatar

Parisa M.

Yelp
This sushi restaurant offers excellent service, fresh fish and creative sushi combinations. I was pleasantly surprised after eating here and will come back in future. You have to try the kimchi tuna and unagi roll. Why? Well because the kimchi adds a creative level of spice to the tuna which complement one another. The unagi is eel with crunchy flakes on top which was flavorful and had sweet element to it. We also ordered spicy tuna tempura which in my opinion was not that great because the roll is deep fried and in process the tuna is cooked. However, I don't like cooked tuna so if you like cooked sushi this would be perfect roll for you! The spicy scallop roll was also really good- they used large quantity of fresh moldy sweet sea scallops. Lastly, you must try the soft shell crab roll if you like soft shell crab! The crab was crispy. We ended up ordering 2 rolls! They also had nice section of beer and saki. The atmosphere was laid back and they even offer traditional Japanese seating.

Sarah W.

Yelp
A good time with good food. We went in thinking about sushi on a crisp December evening (at least crisp for this Californian), and I was immediately drawn to the ramen. My husband and daughter split several rolls and the tempura veggies and squid. The squid was not as much like calamari as we thought it would be, but still good, and there was a good variety of veggies. The rolls were great, and the ramen was fantastic. It had full flavor and great noodles and the egg and fish cakes were excellent.

George S.

Yelp
I was with a group staying at the Marriott across the street and we had a craving for sushi. We took the short walk over to Tono's where they more than satisfied that craving. We tried multiple rolls & all were fresh & delicious. The service was great, drinks cold & the atmosphere perfect. The price was extremely reasonable for DC! If you find yourself in the area w/ the same craving, please give them a try!

Yelp
The $1 sushi happy hour is the star. They even expand their $1 hours on Sundays. Lord help me I love this place for it. Their sushi is fine; it's not going to win any awards but you can get it for a buck at HH so it's my favorite place to get my fix. You can get so much of it! Their ramen is eh, ok. I wouldn't make a trip here for it, but it's ok if you just want to start with sushi. Selection of beer and sake is solid for the price. Service inside is a little harried but the sushi chefs are really amiable (helps if you speak Spanish) and they get the sushi out quickly.

Yelp
Happy hour prices were awesome!!! 1 dollar sushi!! Say what? but the taste was a lil different... I think I'm too fancy for dollar sushi.
