The History of Nevada’s World Famous Clown Motel - AFAR

"A historic graveyard that holds dozens of miners and victims of early-20th-century disasters—most notably deaths linked to mine fires and the Tonopah Plague (a pneumonia outbreak between 1902 and 1905)—it includes the 1942 grave of Clarence David, whose clown collection later became the centerpiece of the nearby motel; local lore maintains that the spirits of 20th-century miners and plague victims linger in the cemetery, fueling many of the area’s ghost stories." - Tiana Attride

If you’re visiting Tonopah then you should take the time to visit the cemetery. Unique little place which gives insight to the town’s history. Strongly recommend visiting at dusk for the amazing sunset colors.

There are some old, original tombstones, but the ones that say how a person died are not original, they were added later. It is quite a unique thing to have in a cemetery,  and some of them are amusing. You can park at the clown motel next door. Parking and visiting the cemetery are both free.

Walk quietly, be respectful. Take care not to tread where you shouldn’t lest you find yourself cursed.

This Cemetery is considered to be the newer cemetery opposed to the other one everyone talks about. The original one is next to the Clown Motel - aka Old Tonopah Cemetery. In 1911 the deathrate was was so high and the original cemetery kept being overwashed by tailings from the Mine Extension, destroying graves and headstones. So they needed a new space to lay those of the town to rest. The Tonopah Mine Extension donated the land to prevent the cemetery from expanding. A US Congressman by the name of Alexander Hardy is interred here as of 1927. Currently there are 2779 memorials. Would def recommend if your into history and learning how other towns and places of the past run things. It is free. Plots are still available for a reasonable price, offering many different burial options.
