"A bistro offering a blend of American and French fare, known for its French onion soup, sandwiches, salads, and garlicky escargot. It faced an identity crisis from the beginning." - Beth D'Addono

11 Essential French Restaurants in New Orleans

"This Algier’s Point bistro has undergone plenty of changes since it opened with the oddball moniker Tonti’s Hand in March 2023. Now Tonti’s Cocktail Bar & Bistro, this tucked-away gem serves classic French bistro fare from chef Chet Henderson. Open daily for brunch or lunch and dinner, the menu dishes faves like escargot en coquille, rabbit terrine, French onion soup, and tartines at lunch with steak frites a star at dinner. Where to Eat in New Orleans’s Algiers Point Neighborhood

"Situated on leafy Verret Street in walking distance of the Algiers Ferry Terminal, Tonti’s is a swell cocktail bar and bistro adjacent to the park. Chef Freddy Augustin commands the kitchen, offering well-executed versions of traditional dishes like French onion soup, escargot Bourgone, and coq au vin pot pie. There’s a creative cocktail menu and reasonable wines by the glass, too." - Beth D'Addono

My husband and I took the ferry from downtown NOLA to the utter quaintness of Algiers Point. We both wish that we had known of this quintessential area sooner! After a short stroll from the ferry, past all of the darling houses and the kids' park, we came to Tonti's. We walked in and were seated immediately. Our waiter was welcoming and answered any questions we had. We started with the bread service, which was delicious. I also ordered a Hemingway - yum! - and it was so good I had another before we left. My husband ordered the Shrimp Provencial and I had the Steak Frittes. Both were PHENOMENAL. We completed our meal with a delicious Creme Brulee. We can not recommend Tonti's enough!!! The food, service and atmosphere we all fantastic!!!! Please do yourself a favor and visit Algiers Point, and especially, Tonti's.

Had Mother's Day brunch here. The food was excellent. I had Eggs Benedict. The orange colored yokes indicate super fresh, local eggs, and the hollandaise sauce had some special sauce which added a lot to the flavor. My husband had the shrimp and grits. The grits were cut into wedges and deep fried to a marvelous crispiness! Son-in-law had the smash burger and said it was great. We also tried the shredded brussel sprouts: nice. Everything was great. To top it all off, we tried the purple cocktail. Yummy!

Despite what you may have heard on the "other side," Algiers has some awesome local food joints. Tonti's is one of them! Unique? Yes! Friendly? Absolutely! Give this place a try! A few pointers: the menu is not huge, but that's the point! These smaller places focus on great food, made as ordered. Sorry, this ain't a chain restaurant that mass produces. Good food takes time. If you are looking for a quick meal, perhaps consider somewhere else in Algiers. Take time to relax and enjoy the ambience here. They have inside and outside dining, a nice bar, clean restroom, and friendly servers. If you like bourbon, they are one of the few places that carries Willet (including rye). The portions are big, but they do not sacrifice quality to produce large meals (too common in the restaurant industry, in my humble opinion!) So, hop on the ferry, walk a few blocks, and enjoy this adorable french bistro! I gave the food a 4 because 5s across the board are cliche...and you wouldn't read the review, would you? Food is a 5!

Google
Cozy spot tucked in Algiers, New Orleans oldest neighborhood - and vest kept secret ;) As of Sept 14 2024, they are offering brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Brunch standards include omelettes, tartiness, and poulet and waffles. Some dinner items have spilled over into brunch and include the classic French onion soup and Brussels salad. Prompt service with well executed cocktails with a great beer and wine selection add plus to the experience.

Google
It's our first time exploring Algiers Point (we usually just stay in the Quarter when visiting New Orleans from Los Angeles). We were coming to check out Tout de Suite for a late Sunday brunch, but we didn't realize it closed early. Tonti's Hand French Bistro is down the street, and we are so happy we ate here instead! Ordered the Pain Perdu brunch special (omg, so delicious on all levels) and their L'Smash burger with fries (and duck fat aioli). We enjoyed everything. The ambiance is lovely, and the service is stellar (thanks, Anthony)! Would definitely come back on our next visit! Also, they whipped up tasty mocktails for us (with homemade grenadine).

Google
AP has a gem on their hands with Tonti’s. Everything from the soft-opening to now has been fantastic. The new Chef is talented and really knows how to plate. Everything is as gorgeous as it is delicious. Great neighborhood vibe, quality service and food, nice bar menu. Curated cocktails with seasonal garnishes and sugar rims make it fun and happy hour is always inviting. Keep it up! A+

Google
Decided to have a fantastic meal instead of bourbon street food. I was not disappointed, excellent food in a great atmosphere. Took a ferry from canal street then walked through beautiful neighborhoods for a great meal. Thx to Jamie for making it a fun meal.

Ruby G.

Google
Worth taking the ferry to cross the river. The caprese salad is amazing and I wish I would have added chicken to it and ordered it as my meal. All entrees were yum and prices were not outrageous.

Yelp
I had a fantastic time, the food was delicious, and the service was exceptional. What a great New Orleans experience! It's one of the few restaurants my local friends are excited to recommend, and I plan to return when I visit again. The wine list is extensive; the cocktails were good too.

Yelp
Man, such a bummer. This place had a great burger. I guess they changed their menu and the burger and fries are both different. The burger I had tonight was basically a small hockey puck in between thawed buns. The fries came out like they had fallen into a puddle of water. The staff project a defeated vibe. Something might be plaguing this establishment. I think it must just be hard to do something like their promise in a place like Algiers Point where people just heat up frozen pizza at home. I am sad for them and for the refugee plates that emerge from their kitchen.

Yelp
Tonti's Hand French Bistro is a neighborhood French restaurant which specializes in classic French cuisine. Tonti's Hand is located on the Westbank of New Orleans in the historic Algiers Point neighborhood. Tonti's Hand opened up back in November of 2022 and has quickly become very popular in the area for their great food, drink and ambiance. This restaurant is named after French General Henri de Tonti who had a prosthetic hand which earned him the nickname the "Iron Hand." General de Tonti was a contemporary of the brothers Bienville and Iberville with Iberville founding Louisiana and Bienville founding New Orleans. This is a popular neighborhood restaurant that has joined a growing number of other restaurants in Algiers Point while Tonti's Hand is currently the nicest restaurant of all of them so far. This is a great spot to enjoy a New Orleans traditional French food feast where you can enjoy some classic French bistro classics. My video review of Tonti's is here: https://youtu.be/u_23dSaNE7Y

Yelp
I feel lucky to have such an amazing restaurant just a few blocks away from my house, which offers a daily happy hour. Today, I tried their spring fling cocktail, which was beautifully crafted and tasted so good. I also tried their version of an espresso martini, which I absolutely loved! The staff at Tonti's is always friendly, and the French-inspired theme of the place is so cute.

Yelp
I live in Algiers and I am always really excited to have a new local business in the area. Welcome Tonti's Hand! Anyone's mad about a traditional French Bistro moving in to the neighborhood???? No never. It's a sign that you are doing everything right in your life if you have a casual neighborhood French spot to visit and have wine and mussels on a Sunday! This place is lovely. A casual French-style bistro. The cheese board is epic and the wine comes in carafes. Come support this little Algiers gem with your sweetheart!

Yelp
Great Restaurant Wonderful Ambience Everything fresh no cans No reservations taken Nice white tablecloths Old fashioned cloth napkins with the blue stripes Beautiful candlelight by local artist Rosetree The Restroom has a unique French paper collage covering the wall Menu has Gluten Free Vegetarian and Vegan options Loved the onion soup DELICIOUS I ordered the Mushroom Bourguignon but I can't eat the cauliflower rice so they kindly placed it on a separate dish so the others at the table could enjoy it The mushrooms and spices are full of flavor Crème Brûlée served with raspberries blueberries and strawberries for dessert So far I am enjoyed everything The wait staff is very attentive courteous and cordial I enjoyed everything this evening I plan to return

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. First impressions were positive. A family of three came in after is approximately 10 minutes after we were seated. The same waitress who seated us went to them first and took their order, while we sat and waited. Their drinks were starved to them before we were asked what if we would lie something. They received their appetizers after which she can and took our food order. My wife said don't worry about it be cause you can't control it. True I can't control the service but I can control how much into and the review that I write. Hopefully the owner will take this as a learning opportunity. Two hours to get our food. Just when we were leaving it came. Algiers is a small community that doesn't have the tourist traffic of New Orleans proper. Alienating new locals is not the way to stay in business long. Disgusting experience!!!

Yelp
This place is great for date night ! Candle lit and cozy if I had to describe it in two words. Upon entry you are greeted by a Maitre, who was super friendly. The mussels and fish almondine are absolutely divine, I was also told the chicken is amazing. I highly suggest trying everything ! Sitting by the window is an added bonus.

Yelp
The food, service and drinks are always excellent. I eat here often because I live around the corner and literally have never had 1 complaint about the bartender, server or food. We eat here for lunch I've never visited for dinner time.

Yelp
Service was 11/10! I loved our server- she was attentive, patient and very sweet. Food was 8/10 we loved our entrees and the drinks were an added plus! Atmosphere was 9/10 only because tables were sort of close to one another --but very cute restaurant overall!

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere! Love this place! Definitely will come back here next time we come to New Orleans.

Yelp
This has been a long time coming. Another restaurant on the Point. Serving weekend Brunch, lunch and dinner. It's currently a limited menu, but I overheard the owner tell fellow patrons that more deliciousness will follow. Smart.... start small and take off big. This dinner did not disappoint. The whole vibe was casual french bistro, a place to grab a glass of wine or beverage, enjoy a great meal and meet up with friends and new visitors. Reservations just make things easier folks, so do them a favor. its pretty easy online these days or just call. They did have room to accommodate everyone on this busy night, those with and without reservations. Onward.... a Mai Tai for this polynesian gal and she was perfect to start the evening. We ordered 2 salads, the escargot and the French Onion soup. Simply delicious, the dressing on the Lentil Salad was so memorable, I'm still thinking about it...even had my son grabbing a second helping. That alone speaks volumes. The BEST shaved salad in New Orleans is what you'll experience in the Bruxelles salad, like wow to the texture, so delicate. I heard the French Onion soup sold out, we can attest it was fantastic. It was busy and by the time we ordered the mains the trout Almondine was sold out (oh well, there's next time!). We opted for the L'Smash Burger, a healthy 2 patty monster and frites; I ordered the Croque Madame which was so grand that she had to go home with us along her court of frites. We were full and stuffed, but we squeezed a bit of room for the dessert option which was of course.....Creme Brûlée, served with a side of jam which I found to be a delightful lagniappe. A crackling sugar top protected the sumptuous creamy vanilla layer. Oh Heaven! Overall we are so thrilled to embrace our newest neighborhood restaurant. I can see many a meal here, with fam, friends, or just a getaway. While we were waiting for the bill, a couple seated at the window table near the bar approached the owner and made reservations to return. Their enthusiastic request completely summed up the quality, service and vibes just perfectly. Bravo Chef Freddy, you shined beyond expectations and this was day 2?!!! To the owners and management, a resounding Merci!!!!

Yelp
Great ambiance either inside near the bar for fun cocktails or an intimate meal or go outside for Al fresco lunch! Service was good, but our server seemed very young (inexperienced?) and I have a serious food allergy so I have to make sure they communicate well with the kitchen. Fortunately, they have gluten free items marked on the menuI wouldn't recommend the fries if it's a shared fryer. I got the trout with veggies and it was perfect. Hubby got l'smash burger. We got mai tais for cocktails and they were the best! Lovely place that we plan to revisit.

Yelp
Excellent food and wait staff is polite. Their desserts are absolutely delicious too. Everything we had was great!!

Yelp
I thought I already left a review, but I might have deleted it. I have been probably 20 time now and have never had any issues. Usually go at off times when it isn't very busy, but all the employees and management are always super friendly. Things I love and would suggest are the lentil salad, brussle sprouts, escargot, ham & cheese croquettes (happy hour), croque madam, smash burger, trout almandine, and the mushroom dish I can't remember the name of. Only thing I've ever actively disliked was the tuna nicoise. Not sure how it's supposed to be, but dry tuna isn't my thing.

Noelle K.

Yelp
Absolutely love Tonti's! Been here a good amount of times and every single time they blow us away with their immaculate food, creatively tasty drinks, their amazing customer service, and their ambiance. Decided to do take-out tonight and, wow, our taste buds are happy. Had the L'Smash burger, which was flavorful, juicy, and delish, and the key lime pie, which was THE best key lime pie I've ever had. Don't pass up this awesome gem!

B L.

Yelp
The food was excellent the service and atmosphere were outstanding. A short ferry ride from canal street, a pleasant walk through a nice neighborhood for a great meal. Well worth the pleasant walk to get here.

Ruth B.

Yelp
We had a 7:30 reservation and we were seated right away. We came for the mussels but they were out of them. We ordered another appetizer and we were told the fish and chip entree was also not available. We waited 1hour and 15 min and still were not served. Granted, they comped our 2cocktails but we left very disappointed and hungry. I hope they can fix their staffing problem because Algiers definitely needs nice places to eat.

Yelp
Cute restaurant Second time eating here First time had the French onion soup & mussels which were both delicious This time tried the Tuna Nicoise which was terrible. Tuna was so dry almost inedible Canned black olives Disappointing !

Layna J.

Yelp
Excellent spot. I am super recited about this addition to the neighborhood. It's the kind of spot where I can bring friends or roll solo. Those are the best in my opinion :) The food is fantastic and the service is above and beyond. I could go on and on. Wonderful restaurant.

Yelp
This French bistro is so perfect for a casual meal. Refined and delicious yet comfortable. Everything we had was delicious. The wait staff is attentive, and the decor perfectly matches the ambience. Cannot wait to return!

Yelp
The Food: (The) French Onion Soup, melt in melt in your mouth escargot, saffron mussels were all cooked to perfection, trout, mushroom dish, all yummy! I will keep going back. The only drawback in food was the bread (tasteless). Service: they have got to fix the non-reservation first come first server issue. The General Manager is adversarial. He knows what he is doing. I can tell by the way everything flows, but he is just plain rude to customers who want to eat and tell their friends about it. Ambiance: perfection a little French bistro in a little French neighborhood

Diana A.

Yelp
Delicious food! We had the cordon bleu sandwich and the fish and chips. I would visit again just to get the cordon bleu sandwich. Everything was fresh.

Brooke R.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Several very French bistro style things on the menu. Well executed! The service was excellent, not fussy, but attentive. Everything on the menu was attractive and appealing. I had escargot and mussels in white wine, my friend had French onion, soup, and the beef Bourgogne " pie". A great experience all in all.

Yelp
We had a reservation for 11:30, which is when the restaurant opens for brunch. My party arrived 5 minutes early (we walked in through unlocked restaurant door) and were made to feel like we were inconviencing the staff because we arrived on time. We were told numerous times that the kitchen wasn't ready and they couldn't take orders until "the shades on the windows were raised." We were fine with waiting (we wouldn't have ordered before 11:30 anyway because we weren't even seated yet), but felt we'd done something wrong because we walked in tbrough the open door. Staff was brusque when I had a quick question about the menu ("Is the entire menu available, or just brunch?"), and irritated when my husband asked if we could be seated away from the music speaker (at time of seating, we were the only customers). The food was decent, but we weren't told about special St. Patrick's cocktail, my Benedict sauce couldn't be served on the side, and there are no to-go cups for coffee (only option for coffee is French press, and we didn't want to leave a third of it behind. A 22% tip was automatically added to the bill, so we had no way to tip what we felt the service deserved. None of these issues alone is a big deal, but they added up to an unpleasant experience in what's supposed to be a neighborhood gem. Too bad, because we were looking forward to showing our out-of-town guests Tonti's.

Leianne E.

Yelp
Food was decent but service was horrible. Waited 90 minutes for food and watched others that came in 45-60 minutes after get their food before or at the same time. Server never attempted to communicate throughout the wait. When the food came, we expressed our frustration. The server claimed the kitchen was at fault and never attempted to apologize or acknowledge the situation. Having been in food service, I understand that things happen: the kitchen gets backed up, new staff are training, etc. It is still the server's responsibility to manage the customers' expectations through communication. This server must have been so conflict avoiding that she created unhappy customers by failing to communicate. I was never in a hurry and would have completely understood the situation if I had been respected enough to have been acknowledged and informed.

Terry L.

Yelp
The roasted chicken was perfect. The whole experience was perfect. Try it. You'll like it.
google avatar

Tracey S.

Yelp
Amazing lunch today. Felt like I was back in Paris. Mussels with saffron garlic and chicken with peas & carrots with steak frites.
google avatar

Eddie B.

Yelp
Tucked in beautiful Algiers Point Tonti's is a quant neighborhoods restaurant. Atmosphere is warm & inviting. I couldn't decide what I wanted on their inviting French influenced menu. Lizzie helped decide. I chose the special Duck Four Ways. It did not disappoint. And there is enough left over for an omelette tomorrow! The staff is friendly & accommodating. Chef is not only on point but humble & friendly. I highly recommend the quick drive across the river!

Jared T.

Yelp
This foot is absolutely excellent. I was visiting New Orleans and decided to visit here instead of the pricier , touristy French Restaurants in the quarter. Wow. What a treat. Maybe the best chicken I've ever had and everything else was also wonderful. Can't recommend it enough.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
Had dinner this past weekend at the restaurant for first time. Service was attentive and quite pleasant. Cocktails were good. Both of our appetizers were solid. I had the filet served with potatoes and beautifully prepared carrots. No complaints. This is a terrific addition to the Point

Yelp
Great food, cozy atmosphere. Right across from the playground so I have a drink while my kids play.

Susan B.

Yelp
Restaurant is not closed!!!! Name changed. It is a wonderful local place with great food and service.

David M.

Yelp
This bistro is a great addition to Algiers Point. We've heard nothing but good things about Tonti's Hand since we arrived in January. Our dinner tonight proved those rumors true. Service by Rachael C was excellent, food was beautifully prepared, portions were large and prices very fair. This place has it all together. We'll be back!

Katie M.

Yelp
Good food, very cute inside, and really affordable! Service was ok. We will be back again!

Brandy F.

Yelp
Very disappointed in my first pseudo experience. My boyfriend and I have been wanting to try this local place for quite some time. We called ahead, and unfortunately, there were no reservations available. The person on the phone said we were more than welcome to come sit and eat at the bar. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very rude man immediately informed us that there were no tables. When I told him that we came to sit at the bar, he replied with "Well you can sit at the bar if you like, but we don't serve food there" Needless to say, we are very disappointed and don't even want to give it another shot.

Sharon S.

Yelp
I had French Onion Soup and Mushroom Bourguignon at Tonti's Hand. Both were absolutely delicious! I loved that one of the cocktails supported the near by Confetti Park, a playground for young children. The service was great and chocolate mouse made a perfect finish for my meal.

C C.

Yelp
Hot, hot, hot. The dining room, the food, not so much the service. And what's with chopping the cheese on the cheese board so small that it can't be spread or hardly even eaten? I'm talking tiny cubes, so small you can't stab them with a fork? It should never take 1- 1 1/2 hours to get entrees out. And please get your air fixed, in this heat it really ruined an evening. It's hard to eat when you're sweating.

Laura L.

Yelp
Whenever I eat out, 9 out of 10 times I can never finish my meal and will need a to-go box for leftovers. But not at Tonti's Hand. My meal was so good, perfectly prepared, and beautifully presented. I could have licked the plate! In fact, there were six of us dining, and everyone ordered something different. Nothing was left on anyone's plate! If you have not tried this quaint French bistro, it's a must. You will not be disappointed.

Johnny P.

Yelp
Walking in, I thought it was going to be really good. We were promptly greeted and seated. Then we waited and waited. Staff whizzed by over and over without ever making eye contact. Another table was sat and drink orders taken along with appetizer order. Finally, I had to wave a server from across the room to be acknowledged. Service was slow. Lentil salad was delicious, escargot was mediocre and the smash burger was okay. I was really hoping that it would have been better.

Trudi R.

Yelp
We were so excited to see a new restaurant in Algiers Point. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Food Service was the slowest we have had in decades. We arrived at 7 & didn't get served our entrees until 8:30. Trout was small & saturated in oil. Mussels were beautiful but uneatable. They were so salty u couldn't taste anything else. Our server was gracious & knowledgable. It was obvious that management was not prepared for the impact Gambit Magazine can have on a new business. We wish them the best, however our first impression was far from what we excepted.

Alison L.

Yelp
So good. Love the atmosphere and the food is incredible. Highly recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
