Lincoln Park’s Taco & Burrito Palace No. 2 to Close After More Than 30 Years | Eater Chicago

"The Roscoe Village burrito restaurant at 1957 W. Belmont Street quietly acquired the Lincoln Park operation about five years ago and will become the new workplace for the outgoing staff: all five employees will move there and the location will take over the space on August 13. The business plans no name change and does not need to close during the transition, providing continuity for patrons who want to follow the team and their offerings to the new neighborhood." - Ashok Selvam

Google
What a great place! We tried several dishes: chimichangas, pastor tacos, and a steak burrito, and everything was a solid 9! The only downsides were the lack of truly spicy sauce and the fact that soda refills weren’t allowed while dining in. Other than that, this place is fantastic for satisfying your munchies!

M D.

Google
The food was so bland, both the tacos de asada and torta de milanesa. The salsas were also bland and not spicy at all. For almost $5 a taco I expected better, I'm also surprised it has such great reviews. There’s better tacos and Mexican food in Roscoe village.

Google
It has been great since 1990’s when Chicago had the best nightlife scene at least in the Midwest. Back then people would flock here after the bars closed at 2am, hard working Hispanic people have been cooking the best Mexican fast food choices all night long! Unfortunately Rahm and the following mayors compromised the local economy and today Chicago is bankrupted.

Adina L.

Google
I had the Thursday burrito special with melon juice. Recommend both! Super quick and hit the spot. I cleaned my plate!

Google
This place has always been so great. The best steak around. Prices have gotten super high but that’s like every other place around. Kind of sucks paying the same as I would at a sit down restaurant without any chips and salsa.

Reed S.

Google
Service was friendly, prices were great, and food was excellent!! I ordered the veggie burrito and it hit the spot. Everything else on the menu looks delicious as well. It is within walking distance of the Beat Kitchen so if you’re catching a show and hungry, for sure stop by here.

Google
Somehow, I have lived in this area for almost 2 years, and just came here to get carry out for the first time! After a 15 minute walk home, the food was delicious. Taco dinner was well-worth the price, and you know a place is legit when their salsa is to die for. 5/5!!!

Drew K.

Google
Best Al pastor tacos in Chicago. Simply amazing with a great price, quick service, and friendly customer engagement. Highly recommend for anyone in the area to stop in.

Yelp
Very well executed Chicago style taqueria (you already know the menu). Friendly no nonsense neighborhood vibe, with a burrito that rates. Tepalcates down the street is also worth considering. They have higher end ingredients and a less conventional menu, but with higher prices to match. Ditto Mis Moles. I'm doing my best to keep them all in business!

Yelp
I haven't had it in a while, but I remember it being very good very fresh. I would highly recommend this restaurant I believe I got the chimichanga and it was fabulous. Service is pretty quick. Ambiance is nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
Fast service and really good food! We tried the loaded nachos, steak taco dinner and enchiladas. All were amazing! The only thing missing that they should consider is picked jalapeños, but overall solid spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid Mexican place. Unassuming, quick and delicious. Met our expectations. The fajita burrito has fresh veggies and high quality meat. I git the small and couldn't finish it. Serving sizes are ample. We ate in and there were two salsas available, both were delicious and spicy. I'd go here again for a quick bite. We went before a ticketed event at Beat Kitchen and this spot was just a 3 minute walk from that venue.

Yelp
Tonys has been a staple Burrito Mex restaurant favorite of mine since I've lived in the area for the last 8 yrs. I recommend the Chimichanga platter, and a large Hibiscus juice

Yelp
We just stopped here because the traffic on the expressway was brutal. But we were pleasantly surprised. The food was excelent. Which is rare for a food critic like me to say! I ordered the Flautas dinner. It was soooooo good. Ask for the extra spicy sauce if you like the really good stuff. My husband ordered the Torta de asada. Also very good. The place is reasonably priced too. We will be back!

Yelp
Easily one of the best Mexican spots in the city. Obsessed with their food, the ambiance is cozy, and not to mention, it's super affordable and clean. The service is great. I'm sold! I'm leaving with a full belly and looking forward to my next visit--and it's in a super convenient location! I loved every moment of my visit today.

Susan E.

Yelp
This is our "go-to" for Mexican in the neighborhood! Great folks working there and food always excellent. Never miss a chance to try Tony's.

Kurt K.

Yelp
Tony's always has quality freshly prepared Mexican food. I especially like the el pastor tacos. Their service is fast and friendly too. Overall a great deal!

Yelp
About a 2-2.5: Tony's Burrito Mex is another favorite local spot for their chimichangas; the menu also includes breakfast platters, chilaquiles, appetizers (such as guacamole and chips, nachos supreme, etc.), tacos, tortas, tostadas, burritos, sopes, and dinner combos. We came here to have lunch, and we all ordered the large Chimichanga dinner plate - you have an option to go for a small or large size, and we opted for the latter. This deep-fried burrito is stuffed with your choice of meat (steak, chicken, pork, ground beef, or chorizo, in which we chose the steak and the pork), refried beans, tomatoes, and cheese, and topped with sour cream and guacamole. We opted out of the tomatoes, just in case we had any leftovers and didn't want any weird heating situations. The chimichanga itself looked like it was fried well and it was definitely large - could have been split between two people or so. The flavor, however, was just okay; the meats could have been more flavorful, and some of the steak pieces were too cartilage-y and tough. The pork was also on the bland side, and the salsas that were served were too liquidy and watery, and barely had any heat. The refried beans had almost like a metallic taste to them, which I was surprised as it seemed like it was made in house? The platters were served with a side of more refried beans and rice, which were both forgettable. Service was very friendly and kind, and even though there was a line, it moved along quickly. There is a handful of seating inside, but most seem to get their items to go. I'm glad I was able to give Tony's a try, but wouldn't return. Limited street parking in the area. +runny refried beans +watery salsas +friendly service +limited street parking available

Yelp
This place is the real deal! Fresh food, great service and you know it's good if Chicago's finest eat here.

Zack M.

Yelp
Been going here a couple of years -- fresh, high quality, and consistant every time. I love the carne asada tacos plus the guys who work there/run it are incredibly kind. Will always come back to Tony's!!
google avatar

Clayton C.

Yelp
Fire fire fire. They had some loaded up nachos out for me in 5 minutes. Meat was sizzling. Will be back for the reasonable prices and seasoned chips. Delicious. Good looks Tony

Yelp
1) Amazing Mexican food. 2) Quick service. Started working in the area about 10 months ago and ever since nice I moved to the goldcoast, there are no authentic Mexican restaurants anywhere. It's refreshing to have great Mexican food daily. Staff and Hugo are also welcoming
google avatar

Dixie W.

Yelp
Great take out Mexican spot. The food is always flavorful and fresh. The green sauce specifically is super tasty on the burrito! Their red Mexican rice is perfect!
google avatar

Desiree M.

Yelp
I live in Logan Square. For anyone that knows there is Mexican food, Caribbean, just a lot of variety. Tonys Burrito Mex (despite being introduced to it by a long ago ex) is still my favorite. Quick service and just plain delicious. Why go anywhere else when ya need a quick delicious bite?!
google avatar

Alison Y.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood Mexican joint. Prices are reasonable, service is friendly and food is tasty. They recently updated their menu with prices but this is to be expected with COVID and cost of food prices increasing. Quality and portions of food remain a good value! Love their tacos especially the lengua tacos. Their chicken is a bit bland for me but pairs well with their salsa.. Burritos are also a solid choice especially when I get it with everything. Haven't tried their other items yet but I anticipate they will all be tasty as well based on my positive experiences so far. Will definitely have a place in my list of rotating local businesses to support!

Yelp
Came in and there was a long line at the counter. Ordered the burrito supreme with chicken for dinner but needed to eat only half because I was playing softball at Hamlin field down the block. The service was great and for $12.00 the burrito was really good. They have a small dining space. All was really good burrito was excellent!

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Service was quick (like 30 seconds to make my burrito order) but overall was meh. It was kinda bland and won't be back most likely but not inedible.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Close to the house, been going there since it changed from Rays. Solid simple tacos, prices higher than ever but understand the struggle to keep a small venue going and glad they are there for the neighborhood. Always a friendly smile and good service. Tip well my friends. I'll take extra green sauce. Thank you:)

Olenka S.

Yelp
Best burritos in the city! My fav is the carne asada! The staff is so welcoming and friendly. Small place but cozy! Never come out dissatisfied!

Gerald W.

Yelp
Delicious food! Courteous staff! Decor is ok. Older building but I'm going for the food
google avatar

Mario C.

Yelp
Tastes like my old go to Taco Burrito Palace which was my favorite burrito. Nice well done tortilla and the steak is muy delicioso
google avatar

Joel R.

Yelp
One of my favorite burritos there is. Reminds me of the old TBP2! I know some workers went over there when it closed so that is why I tried it in the first place.

Tony T.

Yelp
This has been a regular spot as it's as good as it gets for tacos! Al Pastor tacos, burritos, tortas are all perfect flavor. It's hard to find better tacos around. Gentlemen at the order counter always on point and provide excellent service. Cards are accepted with a minimum order of $5. The only downside it that they raised their prices so it is more expensive now and I cannot visit as often as I would like.

Nate B.

Yelp
Food was other worldly. The most incredible authentic Mexican. Service was polite and quick. Cheap prices with amazing food.

Chuck S.

Yelp
Always a great food and a good deal in my opinion. We visit Tony's once a week on average. Steak and pork tacos are great
google avatar

Mia S.

Yelp
This bisnuess is usually good but today the fries erre wet and soggy and small. They are usually big and juicy and thick and crispy. Do better Tony's mex!!! But I lov u anyway
google avatar

Yelp
This has been my go to spot for late night Mexican for about a dozen years now and they haven't lost a step in all those years. My favorite is the chicken burrito with everything - get extra napkins if you order it, especially during covid times if you're eating in your car. It's a great burrito but impossible to eat it without it getting a little messy and juicy. The fries are good too if you're really hungry. The chilaquiles are always a good option too, or a huge order of chips and their super good guac. They aren't open as late during the pandemic but the food is still good and the staff is usually pretty nice. Also they have coke not Pepsi if that influences your decision.

Sel B.

Yelp
#1 takeout restaurant of all time. Idk what can be better than their burrito supreme with ground beef and orange rice. I think they serve Tonys in heaven, it's that good

Lauren W.

Yelp
Delicious food, great prices, good number of options, and service was quick; I'll definitely be coming back here in the future.

George G.

Yelp
Great place, food is consistently good. It's one of the best Chicago late night spots!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Truly my favorite in the area. Tacos, burritos, tamales, tortas- truly soooooo good that I keep coming back. Always fantastic food and friendly service!

Bill H.

Yelp
This place is fire no cap Pro tip: they be fast, but this place gets crowded so call ahead to pick up

Yelp
I am from California so I know what good Mexican food tastes like. I think Tony's is definitely a contender as one of my favorite Mexican spots in Chicago thus far. Tony's is a small place so be prepared to sit at the counter or wait for one of the four booths to become available if you plan to eat there. Otherwise, to-go might be the better option. Also, they had good horchata! It was just like back home. To be fair I haven't tried a ton of Mexican restaurants in Chicago because the few that I have tried haven't been that good, but I plan to keep trying. Tony's refritos (refried beans) and rice were delicious; the rice was soft and fluffy like it should be. I would've liked a bit more flavor but it was fine as-is. I ordered the Combo #2 which included a steak enchilada, taco, and tostada. I thought the taco would've been a hard shell but it came in a soft shell instead. Food was also flavorful as you'll see in the pictures but they do skimp on meat portions and size. Overall, the meal was authentic, flavorful, and hit the spot. Service was also good. And did I say cheap? I paid $6.45 for my meal...so you can't beat that for a meal that sticks to your ribs.

Yelp
Every time that I come to town I stop in. Wholesome authentic Mexican food. Home made, nothing frozen tasting. There was even a bay leaf in my Ranchero Sauce. Love it! This place also turned me onto Horchata. A cinnamon rice drink. Love that too. Sometimes I'll make my own. Quick friendly service.

Yelp
We have been on the hunt for good, authentic, Mexican food in our vicinity and thanks to Yelp, we were able to find Tony's Burrito. Since Burrito is in the name, we had to get burritos. We ordered a large steak fajita burrito, a chicken burrito, an order of beef nachos and agua Fresca (cantaloupe). Everything was delicious! My husband wasn't a fan of the fajita burritos because he felt the veggies overpowered the rest of it. I thought it was fine. We both agreed that the nachos were the best. Only wished it had a bit more cheese. The agua Fresca was refreshing, sweet, and you could tell it was made with fresh fruit. All this food for less than $30! We had enough for another meal the next day. Tony's has become our go-to Mexican place!

Yelp
These guys are the best. Not only great Mexican food, but the service is A+++. I'm a local and eat here at least once a week and every time I am impressed. I've had it all; tortas, burritos, taco dinners, chimichangas, tostadas, tamales, etc. An extra big shout out to them in this review. I went up to the door around 3:45am, this morning and asked if they're done for the night. The same friendly gentlemen you'll see most times in there waved me in to place a to-go order. You guys are the absolute best, and serve the best food!
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
This place is still serving awesome Mexican food - take out only for now during the pandemic. Everything I've ordered for her has been great, especially the steak torta and steak fajita burrito.
google avatar

Mandy B.

Yelp
Neighborhood favorite. Back in the old days it to be my favorite place to have an Uber drop me off to grab food after the bar. These days I grab it for dinner and still love it.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Always a crowd pleaser in my house. Great prices great tasting food and the guys behind the counter always greet me like a regular even though I know they have no clue who I am . The best choice for fresh food served fast!!

Yelp
I love this place! I stop here for lunch every time I'm in the area. Very tasty food for good prices! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Good "ol Tony's. This place has been around awhile. Conveniently located by Fellger Park, we definitely ate a substantial amount of Tony's when our kids were smaller and we would clock hours at Fellger Park to separate our kids from their screens. It's a serious bang for your buck. Most everything on the menu is kinda great. Caveat warning! So, there is a guy who works here who is really grumpy. That could be charming, but he's kind of mean. He often is taking orders too, for some reason. He probably needs to be put in the back of the house. (I believe that's how restaurant people say "work in the kitchen". ). So, yep, it's a mixed bag here, for sure, but I do love their foo. So this is an official update. The food is pretty good and the prices are crazy good. Glad to have you around, Tony's.
google avatar

Yelp
Counter Service. Excellent less than $10 meal. VALUE FOR $$: with $2, you can enjoy a 6-pc Chicken Nugget. $2.50 for hamburger. Perfectly prepared BEEF TONGUE TACO. Loaded default add-ins. STEAK TACO was disappointing as it was hard and lacked flavor. Clean and organized VENUE. Caution: NO public restroom. I look forward to Chili Relleños, and Tamales.
google avatar

Trekforbeer B.

Yelp
Cheap solid authentic Mexican food. This will become a quick lunch staple for me.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This is a perfect quick on the go spot! My favorites are the steak quesadilla and steak fajita burrito! I have been here after a night of drinking or when I'm craving a quick taco! They are not shy on their meat and it's very flavorful!! You can not got wrong with anything steak! For sure a must is the steak quesadilla! The flour tortillas with cheese and steak is the perfect snack! You must dip it in the green and red sauce for extra goodness! Steak fajita burrito is juicy with flavor. Something about those grilled veggies just adds the perfect touch to this yummy burrito! Steak tacos are also yummy- I usually just add cheese and cilantro. Just be specific with what you like on your taco because I believe it comes with cheese, lettuce, and tomato usually.

Chloe H.

Yelp
The taco dinner of my dreams. Great place for fast pick up for a satisfying meal on the go.

Braulio P.

Yelp
Service was quick and pleasant. The guy taking my order was polite and the place itself was neat with a few seats to eat in if needed. I decided to try out a Burrito Al Pastor yet it wasn't the best burrito I've ever had. Maybe a bit too much sour cream for my taste. Still, it was pretty tasty and a good bang for my buck. I'll keep this place in mind.
google avatar

Joseph Emily K.

Yelp
It's good but it is no where near as good as Taco Burrito Palace 2. Sadly, our hopes were up that it would carry the torch that was dropped when TBP2 shutdown. Same family... just doesn't execute as good.
