The Best Italian Subs In Chicago, Ranked

"Much like Bari’s bread, the bread at Tony’s does a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s filled with air pockets and has a nice chew, but also has just enough of a crust to maintain structural integrity without sandpapering the roof of your mouth. And while the meat-and-cheese strata taste richer and milder than other subs—which we’re guessing is because of the mortadella and mozzarella in addition to slices of capicollo and salami—there’s considerably less nuance in the overall flavor. Head to this Edison Park deli when you want your meat sandwich to taste like meat." - adrian kane, nick allen, john ringor, veda kilaru

Tony's Italian Deli & Subs Review - Edison Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This family-owned Edison Park shop is a neighborhood institution, selling everything from prepared foods like casual red sauce dishes and frozen pizzas to housemade cannoli. That said, this is a classic Italian deli, which means they have every kind of high-quality meat you could imagine (and plenty of imported goods), and also some of the city’s best subs. The stacked menu is full of great sandwiches, like a classic Italian or a muffuletta—you can’t make a wrong choice here." - Veda Kilaru

. Step into Tony's Italian Deli & Subs and you'll feel like you've been transported to Italy. The atmosphere is sure to make you hungry, with the mouthwatering scents of fresh-baked Italian bread and a variety of homemade sausages. The atmosphere of the deli is homey, welcoming and filled with the friendly chatter of locals. The food that they offer is quite impressive. Their Italian subs are especially impressive, with the perfect combination of delicious Italian meats, cheeses, and other ingredients like peppers and onions. The bread is always fresh and fluffy and holds the ingredients together perfectly.

Have been to Tony's hundreds of times. All the food tastes amazing. I have 1 issue. I bought a Meat Lasagna and paid $40. It didn't lack anything but meat. There was a few pieces here and there but it was mostly cheese. I was thinking there would be at least 1 or 2 layers of meat, but it looked like they took some meat and sprinkled it here and there on top.Again, it tasted great but I would have just bought the meatless one for cheaper. Not a big reason to stop going there but will think twice when I want to buy a Meat Lasagna for $40. But again...it tastes amazing.

Google
Whhhaaaaat. I've had many a sub at this place over the years. Very tasty. Today I decide to get an Italian on focaccia. Game changer. Easily feed a few. Best sandwich ever. Chocolate tiramisu was also so delicious. In the neighborhood it's a legend. If your not close..... trust me this place is worth a cruise if you want authentic Italian.... anything.

Google
Beautiful store. Family owned by wonderful people. Best Italian sausage and sandwiches. If you're looking to feed a crowd the catering is a good idea. We have ordered Lasagna and salads and the food is always a hit with guests! Holiday parties, Weddings, and any function really. They have nice imported painted dishes and linens, cappuccino cups and all sorts of Italian items.

Google
Needed last minute catering order for a family reunion. Needed some sub sandwich. The ladies every time I called were super helpful super sweet. More than enough food which we were very grateful for. Pricing was perfect. Super excited to get the espresso shot at the deli. We came all the way from Arlington Heights and we're very grateful for everything they've done for us. Everybody at the family reunion was asking where the sandwiches were from because they were so good

Google
Great place with delicious subs and so much more. Definitely more of a local place, but for 1st timers, I recommend heading to the deli counter, grabbing a number then checking out all the other goodies on the shelves and in the coolers. Pay attention though, because you'll be amazed how quickly they get the orders out. Family owned and run and really reasonable prices.

Always a great experience at Tony's! The variety of Italian imports is incredible and the store's team are friendly and helpful. I stocked up on some goodies for Easter early.

Google
Tried the Italian sub. I'm older and have grown up in the area and lived here all my life, I've tried out all the well-known places. Their sub doesn't even come close. Very little meat, hard bread, the dressing was decent though. Much better places around, like Al and Joe's. I also ordered an arancini for later, when I got home I noticed they didn't give me any marinara sauce with it. Great, a dry arancini for $4. Heck even Rex's on Harlem is better than this place. The older lady cashier was very nice though. I won't be going back.

Google
Super super cute family owned spot! Not a lot of great deli’s in the area but this was an awesome stop. The staff is SO kind! Although we only tried the deli food the market was well stocked and I look forward to getting supplies to make an authentic Italian dish! Highly recommend

Yelp
Great place for Submarines. Being born and raised in Chicago there are just a few great submarine shops available and Tonys Deli is one of them. Freshly made sandwiches and pastas for the choosing. Great place to grab a sandwich for lunch or a fresh made pasta for dinner. My daughter turned 15 and is having some friends over for dinner and she loves their pasta! Here's a tip - if don't want to pay the metered parking - walk a half block north and there is a free parking lot for Edison Park shoppers - located at 6720 N Oliphant

Yelp
Serendipitous find; I saw posted on some of the local Facebook groups that this business was no longer taking Christmas dinner orders. There's a similar place in Norridge that my SO's brother really likes and we decided to give this place a try. The sub sandwiches are really good and freshly made; my SO actually preferred the bread here to the place in Norridge. This place also sells pre-made lasagna (and I think other things too) and since lasagna is just something that is too finicky for me to make I may buy one sometime to give it a try, since I do love lasagna. I also really want to try their tiramisu--I'm sure they must have it! Parking is street only but it's Edison Park so I'm not sure it's usually all that hard. Worth a visit if you're around, and if you're not wanting a sandwich from their deli they're a small grocery as well with lots of high-quality brands and ingredients so worth a visit either way.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Wonderful for lunch, prepared dishes and my go to for family parties. The party subs are delicious and very reasonable.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Love Tony's. Love the Italian subs, the lasagna is great, I like that you can get stuff at the deli and desert. It makes for an all in one stop meal. They do a great job kicking it all out there.

Yelp
Incredible options, service, food and people. I had the arancini and hot beef sandwich. Also some cookies to take back to California. I even got to say hi to the boss himself, Tony. It's a short trip to/from ORD and highly recommend.

Yelp
Stepping into the past with this quaint deli and market. The service was excellent, variety was interesting and the flavor of their deli sandwich was terrific. It kind of reminds me of a place I would have walked into from the "A Bronx Tale" movie.

Yelp
I had the Soto sangwich I saw the sign for it ... and wondered what it was ... Roast Beef Turkey pepperoni, lettuce, and tomato provolone hot Gardieria a little bit of hillbilly butter( mayo ) ... i was swept away to Sicily... I felt as if I was at the same restaurant where Michael had some wine and met Apollonia's father for the first time... I felt the warmth of the Mediterranean moist air upon my face ... I felt as if I was five years old again eating the greatest sandwich my grandmother could ever make... It was a religious experience. Try this sandwich it will change your life.

Yelp
Great spot for Italian Deli food (pasta, pizza sandwiches, deli meats etc.) people who work there are very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh. Go to the back of the grocery store, it's worth getting a sandwich there

Yelp
Went to Tony's to get sides for my family's BBQ. Staff was friendly and gave good recommendations on amount needed. Food was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Tony's is the real deal deli. We love going there to grab a quick take and bake meal for dinner or to grab a sandwich for lunch. Everyone is friendly, all of the time. I'm a big believer in consistency in my local spots and Tony's has it. I've been 5-6 times in the last year and I know I will be getting exactly what I ask for, every single time.
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
Best place for a prosciutto sandwhich or meatballs. Hands down. Even the sides like macaroni salad and their cold pasta salad are phenomenal. Staff is always super kind and I swear there is magic in this food because it's amazing. We take everyone here to try the food. There's tons of great food to buy that's been prepared.

Yelp
Local staple for Italian deli meats. Fresh bread and wonderful service! A must see! Family owned and operated.

Yelp
Excellent deli sandwiches. I ordered ahead for take out. They were delicious and good size. I ordered 3 for a group of 10 people and had plenty to go along with tossed salad and side of potato salad. Service was good. Gets busy in there but orderly service

Yelp
Love Tonys deli ! Everything is always so fresh. The bruschetta is my favorite and is seasoned to perfection & the sub sandwiches are yum too.

Melissa T.

Yelp
Got there 10 minutes before they closed. The second I touched the door handle an employee locked it and pretended he didn't see me. I stood there for a few minutes (confused) and then waved at another employee. She came out and said they were out of bread (kinda rudely). I wasn't there for bread but....ok?!! There are WAY too many other places to go in the Chicago area so it's best to move on.

Quanisha P.

Yelp
Tony's deli is fantastic! My only criticism is the olive salad $8.99/lb I bought. I didn't notice till I got home but it was basically olive oil with a few olives. Seriously??? I paid for oil yuck! That was a ripoff that will NOT happen again.

Eddie C.

Yelp
Great Italian deli! Sandwiches always served fresh with the highest quality meats. Wonderful selection of pastas, treats and other Italian foods.

Yelp
I moved to Edison Park in May but this was the first time I stepped foot into this authentic Italian establishment. I ordered a regular Caprese sandwich. It was good but it left me hungry for more. I forgot how regular in Italy is a small in America. OR...I just have a big appetite and there's no shame in that! I also bought some tiramasu for dessert but saved it for dinner. Im not really a fan of tiramasu but this was so delicious that I ate half of the cake. The people/workers I encountered were really nice. The place is super cute and seeing all these Italian products takes me back to when I was in Italy for my honeymoon. Im glad I visited this Edison Park staple and plan on coming back more often considering I can walk there in 3 min!

Yelp
Great family deli everything is old school the way family stores were run ! Can't find places like this they're been here forever or they don't exist I just wish this place we're in my naberhood but happy to go for a ride well worth the trip thanks for keeping these places going hat's off to the people who keep this place up and going!

Debbie G.

Yelp
Extremely good Italian sub. Also has groceries, Italian, and spices. Deli counter has a wide range.

John H Z.

Yelp
Tony's got the balls!! Meatballs, that is! I had still been driving down to Bari's near downtown for my subs! Now, that I. Know Tony's is much closer, my trip will be shorter, as I live near the HIP! It couldn't have happened at a better time! Things have changed, and so has Bari's quality. Tony's has the variety of meats and dressing needed in an Italian sub! The meatball sandwich was hot and satisfying to my tastes!! Edison Park is much closer to me, and now I will be able to pick up authentic subs more often!! Thanks for the great lunch!!

Yelp
Family owned and operated in my neighborhood my entire life. Great homemade dishes and the BEST pepper and egg sandwich (lent only) in the city!
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
Food Ambience and service is great! My son took an Italian sub on his Washington DC trip and could barely fit it in the overhead!!! Classic homemade food and deli. Definitely recommend!!!

Yelp
This was one of the best Italian subs I have ever had. This place is the real deal and it was pretty inexpensive. I literally had 10 minutes to go out and grab something before heading back to work and I spent less than 5 minutes at the counter watching them make it.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Great pasta sauce, I like it with the meat. There are some subs ready to go if in a hurry or made to order exactly how you like it. Very friendly and cozy inside.
google avatar

Yelp
Best lasagna in town! If you need a party catered, Tony's is the place to go. Foot long sandwiches and all sorts of delicious sides. Highly recommended!

Rich H.

Yelp
As the best-, if you like a home style Italian place with top quality and service- you'll love Tony's! For 15 years their food has blessed my local landscape and l am forever grateful. We all want to recommend a great place for others and now l'm getting to do it! My favorites are homemade frozen dishes and subs! But the groceries from Italy are amazing!

Yelp
Let me start off by saying that Tony's is good and worth the trip from the western suburbs to here. My best friend learned about the placed from her brother down in FL and we decided to check the place out for him. We got the eggplant parmigiana, meat lasagna, meatball sandwich, italian sub, strawberry dot and lemon dot. The italian sub was very weak of flavors and sauce. I won't get again. The strawberry dots were nasty. Never again. Now, all the hot meals we got were excellent. My best friend raved over the eggplant. The lasagna was perfect, OMG!!! So much flavor and melts in your mouth. The meatball sandwich was delicious. A "must come back for" sandwich. The lemon dot sealed the deal with a sweet finish! Lastly, while we were there they gave out samples of italian sausage. That sausage was some of the best sausage I've ever had. We ended up buying 2 lbs. of the stuff. I can't wait to grill them!

Yelp
My wife and I live 5 minutes from Tony's, and go there all the time! You won't find a more authentic Italian experience outside of New York or Jersey. Italian spoken here! Both customers and owners/workers! You're not seeing double, they really are identical twins behind the sandwich counter! Subs are prepared to order, reasonably priced, with local Turano breads. Good selection of the typical Italian pastas, olive oils, balsamic and such, considering the small size of the place. And if you want a Mario Lanza, Jimmy Roselli or Sinatra CD, they're right behind the register, which is run by Nonna! There are a small number of tables if you want to dine in. But we get our subs to go unless we have friends from out of our neighborhood.

Yelp
Best example of a meal deal. They are the hidden gem for Italian subs. You can not beat their subs. For their value. My favorite thing to get here is the Caprese Classico. I doubt you can find a sandwich that good around with their price point. They also have plenty of good stuff as a grocery store. My favorite item here are their Italian Ice, mango. They have it by the quart and it is house made. Definitely a must have on the way home. If it is not my lunch break I am definitely bringing this on my way home. Parking for the area would be intimidating at first but the street behind it has plenty of spots for you to park. Don't be fool by the pack main street parking. Still a popular area people go to. A real local place is when the local customer knows the owner on a first name base. An institution of the area

Steve K.

Yelp
Hands down the best subs in Chicago. Stand outs are the Italian, Caprese Classico (tomato, basil, fresh mozzarella, and prosciutto), and the meatball sub. Without doubt one of the best meat balls and sauce combos I've tried. Definitely visit this Chicago institution.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
Great subs. Probably the most reasonably priced meal you will ever eat. Great catering too.

Julie G.

Yelp
Wonderful sandwiches soups and Italian cuisines . Highly recommended and so unique in this day and age.

Yelp
Great beef sandwiches... great subs!! Let me rephrase that.... the Best sub Sammie's in the city. The beef sandwich is to die for!! The line at the deli is always busy.... that's where they make your sandwich. I love their to go meals too.... broccoli and pasta is my all time fav. Lots of other meals handmade as well. Tony's has been there forever... love having a local Italian deli in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Amazing food. Great staff. Prices can't be beat. Would give more stars if I could!!!!!

Yelp
I divorced my ex-wife in 2013 and it took almost a year to finalize. Among many reasons, for yelp purposes one of the hard thing to let go was the quality of Italian food that her mother would make on a regular basis. You can imagine my surprise when I moved to the area and discovered this place had almost to the tea the exact same recipes that my ex mother-in-law did. In other words, this place is fantastic! I especially like the hidden gem that is the deli in the back. Super friendly people works there and most important, it is the only place in the area you can get a fast casual sandwich to go or sit in the restaurant real quick and be on your way. We're talking 15 minutes max. Now, every Sunday I try to pick up one of their spaghetti sauces or their vodka sauce because they are a 10 out of 10. The people are always friendly and I recommend you stop in :-)
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
We catered Tony's for my daughter's baptism. The food was great, but more importantly, the owner took time to speak with me to make sure everything was set up exactly the way my wife had asked. Great food & service from local business. Will be happy to continue going back!
google avatar

Sal C.

Yelp
This is a must stop shop for all your sandwich needs! And not to mention the variety of Italian imported foods they have. The staff is amazing and the owners have a heart of gold. Go check them out you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Winston T.

Yelp
This place is a definitely a staple in the Edison Park neighborhood. Soon as you walk in you feel like you belong in the family, you see everyone just having genuine conversations with one and other. They have a variety of Italian items from meats to pasta sauce to pizza. I usually get their arancini spinach & cheese rice balls with a caprese sandwich. Ending it with a cannoli, forget about ittttt!

Nina L.

Yelp
Amazing staff and amazing deli! I promise nothing in the store will disappoint! If you're in the area you've gotta stop by!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
This was an awesome place! The deli is in the back and you could tell it was good food by the line they had. I got the muffuletta and I can't wait to get it again! The sandwich was the size of my face and tasted great with every bite. And I also got a meat stuffed rice ball (not sure what it's actually called) but that was amazing too next time I'm gonna try the spinach and cheese one.

Yelp
I drive down Northwest Highway all the time and go right by Tony's Italian Deli @ 6708 Northwest highway in Park Ridge. I was actually looking at this on Yelp Saturday and almost drove over here, but didn't have the time I stopped in tonight (Tuesday) and Holy Moly mostaccioli I got a 15" Italian Sub for $5.99 what is it still 1980 prices in Park Ridge. Such a deal I have for you. A good Italian sub sandwich w/capicollo, mortadella, salami, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, dressing. Dudes & dudettes I ate half the sandwich now and have half for another meal. Tony's is a cool little family owned Italian deli that has a large variety of meats and cheeses and inexpensive sub sandwiches that can be prepared to your own specifications. They also have a grocery section that carries a lot of Italian foods like capers, olives, olive oils, dry pasta, frozen pastas, frozen pizzas... Very helpful staff, very accommodating. In the immortal words of Arnold Schwarzenegger "I'll be back"
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
HORRIBLE deli jk it's bomb as hell man go here if you want one of the best sangwiches on the north side you fillin me????

Kat C.

Yelp
What everyone else is saying. This place rocks! My hands down favorite for subs and all things Italian. We as a family have used their catering services on short notice and are continually pleased.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Wow! Heard about the sandwiches here, from a friend. Wasn't sure what to expect, but prices on the website looked good... so off we went. Okay, simple Italian deli, but these folks a quick! Ordered a turkey for myself which was good... maybe missing a smidge on flavors, but is otherwise good. Husband got an Italian sub and said it needed mustard and mayo.. this was after he'd devoured half of his 15 inch sandwich. He added both and damn near inhaled the other half. At the register picked up 2 Napoleons and some Gelato... haven't tried the gelato yet, but the Napoleon was so delicious! We will be back! Without a doubt!

Marie T.

Yelp
Family owned business. Very nice people. Fresh subs Overall a great addition to Edison Park

Yelp
Love this neighborhood spot. Great sub sandwiches. Be sure to try the homemade lemon cookies.

Yelp
I have been going to Tony's Deli since I was born. Vito took over for Tony over 40 years ago and never looked back. We drive 20 miles without hesitation just to come in and get homemade Italian sausage and pecorino romano cheese. While we are there we pick up some deli meats, bread, olives, and a sandwhich or 2. There are a lot of homemade meals frozen and ready to take home. We purchase all of our Italian specialty items from Tony's as well. Tony's deli is an extension of our Italian household. If you haven't been, you need to go. But be prepared, they are always busy! (as it should be). I am hesitant to even post this because they will be even busier!
