The Best Italian Subs In Chicago, Ranked - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Much like Bari’s bread, the bread at Tony’s does a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s filled with air pockets and has a nice chew, but also has just enough of a crust to maintain structural integrity without sandpapering the roof of your mouth. And while the meat-and-cheese strata taste richer and milder than other subs—which we’re guessing is because of the mortadella and mozzarella in addition to slices of capicollo and salami—there’s considerably less nuance in the overall flavor. Head to this Edison Park deli when you want your meat sandwich to taste like meat." - adrian kane, nick allen, john ringor, veda kilaru

Tried a Big T, very good sandwich. Service was excellent. Will be back to try a beef next. Update: Came back and tried the diavlo panini, excellent. This is a 5 star deli.

Google
I heard good things about this deli. I love Italian grocery stores. I got the wise guy sub and the canoli. It was great. Glad to see Illinois isn't the only place with good Italian markets. I did a review for my YouTube channel "Mailman Nick"

Google
Wow!!!!! I'm super impressed with this wonderful Italian store/deli/sandwich shop. I don't know where to begin! You walk in to such warm, smiling, and helpful staff. There's a variety of sandwiches to choose from, and they're all so good! The bread is fresh and tasty. The soup is phenominal. They also have homemade sausage and meatballs. This is a true Italain experience. You won't be disappointed!

Google
This deli doesn’t deserve anything less than 5 stars. This was our first time. Went with my husband and kids. The paninis were delicious. The bread was so fresh. The Caesar salad was amazing! Very reasonably priced. Will be back again.

Google
This Deli is top notch. I enjoyed a nice afternoon with my aunt and uncle. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the owner. He truly was a kind man. My uncle and him hit it off right away. We tried both hot and cold sandwiches, pastas, fresh octopus and Greek olives. We also took some goodies home. Everything was FRESH and I don’t say that lightly. The place was very clean and well kept. Loved the deli meat is cut with each sandwich. I would recommend it to anyone and plan to come back soon! Thank you for a great meal and great service!

Google
DELIZIOSO! PERFETTO! Tony and his staff are so nice. Food was hot, fresh and made to order. Atmosphere is warming and feels like home. Thanks Turano Bread Company for the recommendation! Next time you're in the Dyer area, stop by Tony's Italian Deli, you wont be disappointed! How you doin'

Google
Tony’s Italian Deli is a hidden gem in Dyer! Their sandwiches are absolutely packed with flavor—fresh meats, cheeses, and bread that tastes straight from Italy. The friendly, welcoming service makes every visit a treat. Whether you're grabbing lunch or shopping for Italian groceries, Tony’s never disappoints. Highly recommended!

Google
The only reason I'm giving them a 4 is because they didn't have as much of a selection as I had hoped. However what they do have was great and reasonable as far as pricing. I will be stopping in again to get my mortadella fix.

Yelp
Today was my first visit and I will be back!! The meatball sub was amazing!! Cute little market with fresh and packaged items to purchase! Worth the drive from Illinois!!! Angie S.

Yelp
The food was amazing! The cannolis are always delicious! Love this place! I'm from Chicago and i miss all the places we had this over there. So happy they are in NWI!

Yelp
Food is great. Big new location. Never had an issue with their food. I definitely would try them again in the future

Yelp
Ask for the spicy sauce sandwich made Tony's way! Wife loves the fresh turkey with red peppers.

Yelp
Everything is fresh and delicious Very clean and friendly Great for fast lunch and pickup dinner

Yelp
What's not to like about this amazing Italian Deli? The Italian Beef was a great relief after the debacle of our previous attempt. Truly, these are awesome! The cannolis are homemade and simply amazing. The prosciutto, the olives, and selections of Italian cheeses are perfect. You're paying a premium, but it's directly from Italy and are far better than anything you'll find otherwise. The vodka sauce is now a staple in our kitchen. Oh!, and the gelato- about as authentic as you're going to get this side of the Atlantic. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that the sandwiches, while very very good, are a little steep. The Italian Beef just might be worth it. And check out everything else, there's simply too much to itemize. The most authentic Italian you can find. Trust me, I've been there a few times.

Yelp
This is my all-time favorite sandwich shop! A co-worker from work took me here and I absolutely love coming here. It feels like I am dining at an Italian bistro and they sell some cool Italian products such as cookies, pasta sauces, and pasta. The cases are filled with salads and meats. My favorite sandwich is Michael's Favorite, which has lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, Roast beef and Provolone cheese. I also like the Mama B, which has lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, Mortadella, Turkey, Genoa Salami, and Provolone cheese.

Mark M.

Yelp
Excellent place the food is absolutely awesome and the staff is awesome as well highly recommend you try it out .

Yelp
One of the best specialty store in dyer Indiana definitely recommend trying the cannoli and the sandwiches are amazing along with with the meatballs
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
Yum. Yum. Yum. Get you a sub. Super Sub packed with meat. Add some biscotti for a sweet treat. Homemade pasta. Homemade sauce. Skip the olives and it's your loss. For real, the supersub on Turano is great and there are a lot of special italian treats. They have a specials board, so you might be able to pick up some house made chicken soup to go along with your sammich. You can also find the important 3 C's of delis: coffee, cookies, and cold-cuts.

Laura N.

Yelp
This place is a disappointment after disappointment. Overpriced mediocre items. Terrible business ethics and rude staff. I've tried to shop there numerous times but either they close early or the ovens are shut off. They cry on Facebook when the power goes out and they lose their freezers. Don't go here. Take 10 more minutes and head down saulk trail to dal santos where there is a respectable deli.
google avatar

Jaxson K.

Yelp
Expensive for mediocre deli goods. There's much better places that provide better quality and better specialties. Not worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place, friendly and accommodating staff We stopped here in hopes of grabbing a bite before Mid-Week service at Faith Church next door. We walked in 5 minutes from the place closing with expectations of being turned away. The staff welcomed us as we poured over the delectable display. Great tasting food, the only set back was the hoagie roll for my sandwich was hard. Attempting to eat it only resulted in tearing up my gums. I'll be sure to return

Yelp
I'm going to echo Foodie B and the level of frustration that some others have mentioned. The owners attitude should be a little less "short" and more welcoming and thankful we want to support the establishment. We are in tough times for everyone involved and it's about to get even tougher. Are they expensive? yes. Can they be nicer? yes. Should we support small businesses and agree we need to keep what we have and get more non-chain restaurants in the area? yes. For that, I say three stars. We need to keep them in business....at least those that are nice to their customers.

Yelp
I wanna say i have been coming in for a few months now and every single iv gone the food and the staff have been amazing it really is my favorite deli.

Zach M.

Yelp
Made me a fire sandwich and the staff was so friendly. Actually helped me pick out what I didn't even know I wanted. Was so indecisive and they recommended me one of their signatures and I loved it! The place itself also acts as a little Italian grocery store. A whole bunch of homemade goods.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, great service. It doesn't get better than this. The only problem for me is that I can't afford all this greatness on a regular basis. I'll let you all decide for yourselves, but if price is no object, GO TO TONY'S !
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing ... Meat and Cheese tray was amazing. It was the star of the show. Going into Tony's place was a wonderful experience. It brought back some fond memories of my dad and I going to the Italian Store 30 years ago. I met Tony and his wife and they are super great people.Tony took the time out of his busy day to help me carry all the items to my truck. We are looking forward to Tony and his staff catering future work events. I'm fact we're have one coming up in a week. I can't say enough about Tony's place except that we can't wait to try everything.... Keep up the good work.

Charlene K.

Yelp
Delicious all their prepared Deli choices are prepared fresh daily. Using the best Italian foods. The most wonderful Italian and many imported groceries sold and many fresh Italian meats and cheese.

Yelp
Great, authentic Italian deli... thus owner.. Tony takes tremendous pride in his homemade meatballs, meats, salads and do many more Italian specialties. There's not many quality independent food businesses in NWI but this place is a gem. I told Tony he needs to get the word out via Instagram! I appreciate good quality homemade food after being from Chicago and living in NYC. I'm not a fan of DQ, Subway or any other substandard fast food and that why I was so happy to come across this authentic deli with homemade sandwiches, soups, salads and an extensive selection of olive oils, sauces, breads, pastas, chocolate, Italian cookies, etc. What a great place to get a delicious sandwich, salad or take home pasta. I'll be back! And it's super clean, nice space to sit and eat in.. the owners really take pride in this deli

Yelp
Really authentic Italian deli, excellent food, huge portions, super clean, very gracious, professional, polite, helpful staff, and excellent selection. A hidden gem!

Video M.

Yelp
Good food but a little pricey. But these days what isn't. They have good sandwiches and I have even gotten meals to take home for dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. Tip: bring cash and check the hours before you come. We love so many things here: the Parma ham, the pasta, the sauce, the cheese, the deli counter and the sandwiches! I love the vodka sauce, the gnocchi is awesome, the feta is delicious, I love the olive mixes.

Fernando C.

Yelp
Do not drive past this place. Give these guys a try and you will not be disappointed. Me and my hungry son will be back!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
I was hungry for a GOOD Italian sub. Subway? Nope. Jimmy John's? Nope. Tony's Italian Deli? YEP. The "Super Sub" was just what the doctor ordered. Beautiful in every way.

Tony B.

Yelp
Overpriced, overrated food. Small is too small and not worth the drive. D&D and Dal Santo's are way better!

Rp P.

Yelp
Great place for freshest Italian deli. The best meatball sandwich I ever had, soft bread, great sauce with tender meatballs. Definitely try this place if you want the best capicola and volpi salami. Pricing, I work for a food service industry and food prices of items, has skyrocketed. Some iems have increased up to 120%. Just like any food service business, they are keeping their prices leveled from the increases from their vendors.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally tried Tony's deli...wonderful addition to Dyer. The sandwiches are delish! We had the Italian and Tony's panini and a Mama B sandwich. While waiting for the paninis, Tony made a pizza and shared it with us! Loved the potato salad and sampled some of the largest olives I've ever seen! We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Probably the best place to get your Italian fix on! Beef sandwich unreal! Italian sausage sandwich mind blowing! And the meatball sandwich.....melts in your mouth. We've gotten trays of cannoli and they are hands down the best around. Tony's brand gravy is delicious. The service is better than anywhere around. We start here when planning a party. I highly recommend it.

Dean K.

Yelp
Finally had lunch from Tony's today. Coworker ordered hot roast beef and I ordered meatball sandwich. The beef was unbelievably good. The meatball is succulent with excellent red sauce. Will be visiting here often.

Yelp
Finally a deli in Dyer that we can be proud of! The quality of the sandwiches, deli meat, sauces and oils is what you would expect from an authentic and upscale, yet reasonably priced deli. Their sandwiches are freshly made with just the right amount of meat that will leave you satisfied and wanting to visit again quickly. Their soup's are all freshly made daily with only the finest ingredients resulting in a soup better than your grandmother ever made. The cannoli's will have you sneaking back to the fridge for another one before your spouse or children beat you to it. Do yourself a favor and stop over! Note: I have no connection to this business in any way shape or form. This is just my honest opinion after a few visits over a few weeks.

Luis C.

Yelp
If you're looking for good and reasonably priced Italian food this is the spot in Dyer. I've been gone for a couple of years. I was on active duty and got back recently and I can't stress how good the meatballs are here. The food is amazing and the service is outstanding. Tony makes you feel at home and he supports other local businesses.

Yelp
My wife and I just stopped in for the first time this afternoon. One of the cleanest deli's I have ever been to - and Ive been to a few in my time. The Owner, Tony, was conversational and has a great story. We each had the 6in Wiseguy sandwhich - my only mistake was not getting the 12in. Everything was fresh, including the Turano bread. Also, do yourself a favor and splurge on the made-fresh-daily Cannoli; they make about 50 a day and always sell out, so grab a few. These guys opened late 2019 and endured the pandemic so get out and support this hidden gem of Dyer.

Margaret T.

Yelp
Purchased some homemade Italian sausage & marinara sauce to cook at home. Both the sauce & the sausage were fantastic! The sausage has so much more flavor than any store bought sausage. We also picked up some lemon gelato for home & that is great also. On top of being a really nice guy, Tony puts out quality too. Will definitely be doing more shopping there; I can't wait to try some of the other products.

Hector Jr C.

Yelp
Every time I go Tony's, it's a good experience. The food is great, and the owners and staff are very friendly, and welcoming. I highly recommend this place.

D C.

Yelp
Called in order for two beef sandwiches. Arrived to pick them up and was told it was $26+. Asked how could it be that price when the sandwiches are $9.60 each... employee points to a small sign stating there is now a $2 surcharge per sandwich for increased costs. Reluctantly completed the purchase and brought them home. Opened the sandwich to find about 3 large peppers and about 2 slices of meat. Absolutely shocked at the lack of meat and exorbitant prices. I like to support local businesses but the quality was poor and prices extremely high. Would not recommend and will not be back.

Barbara B.

Yelp
One of the best Hot Italian Sausage I have ever had. We come from an Italian family that made our own years ago and this brought back wonderful memories. Thank you!

Lyn H.

Yelp
Customer service was terrible. I had a few minutes and wanted to see what was offered inside so I stopped by and was pleasantly surprised at the deli selection. I decided to grab a bottled water and bag of chips (for my kid who was with me) and waited near the register. One of the workers (one of the owners) ignored me as she continued to wait on others (making them sandwiches) that came in while I was waiting (the deli line was separate). She would then check them out (where I was waiting) and then would continue on to another person that wanted a sandwich. There was no one else to check me out as this was their process apparently- to make a sandwich for a customer and then check them out. One customer finally said that I was there before them and she rolled her eyes. I was starting to get upset because she was blatantly ignoring me and I didn't understand why as I was waiting patiently. I said loudly I had been completely ignored for 5 minutes and at least 4 people had been waited on that came in after me. At this point and the male owner then told me that I didn't need to 'act like that'. He basically belittled me, although I never lost my composure, and all I wanted was to pay and leave since my kid was fixated in the chips and I just wanted to leave. I will never ever come back based on the treatment I received from both of the owners.

Susan W.

Yelp
Great little italian place! You can stop in on the way home and pick up dinner! They havE a nice asSortment of dry goods as well as many fresh pastas, and sauces. They have gelato too! The staff is very friendly aNd helpful. I picked up some fresh italian sausage; it was great. They also have pasta salads and sandwiches made to order. Great addition to the neighborhood!

Foodie B.

Yelp
So I drive way out of my way to check out Tony's. I was walking towards the door when a man setting up chairs says "were not open yet" Then he says 11 o clock. For a local deli to not have a little personal touch is poor. It was 10:30. Do the slicers not work until 11. He really couldn't take a few minutes out of his busy schedule to cut me a few pounds of Italian ham. I miss Capri Imports! They always had that personal touch. Been going there since they were in cal city in the mid 80s. Now I'm looking for a new place and this guy wouldn't let me past the front door. Not driving an extra 10 miles for this kind of treatment. Hope that extra 30 minutes was worth losing my 30 years of business.

Jo B.

Yelp
Very high prices. For example dried black olives are $13.99 a pound and at most places like Shop and Save they are $3.99 a pound
google avatar

Randy D.

Yelp
The deli is superior to anything within a ten mile radius and will grow exponentially as we resume a normal way of life here in Northwest Indiana. Give them a try, I promise you will be glad that you did.

Barbara Q.

Yelp
Tony's Italian deli in Dyer Indiana is absolutely the best Italian deli in North West Indiana and the South suburbs. Go in there and look around and buy all of the fabulous items they have to offer. Check out the menu and try some of the wonderful options.

Frank P.

Yelp
Absolutely spot-on! Being of Italian descent I have been eating this type of food all my life. The super sub sandwich was everything I had hoped and expected it to be. Packed full of meat and cheese and as fresh as you would want it. The meatballs are some of the best I've ever eaten. The sausage is reminiscent of what my father used to make. Properly done with a distinct fennel taste to it. I drove from Illinois to get there and will go back again. Great Italian delis are hard to find. Dyer I envy you.

Traci G.

Yelp
Delicious sandwich and conveniently located but the prices prevent me from giving more stars. Ridiculously priced!! Cost me $30 for 2 sandwiches and 3 small bags of potato chips. One sandwich didn't even have meat. I cannot recommend or return until they adjust the prices. IT'S A SANDWICH, NOT A STEAK!
