The Best Butcher Shops In Boston

"Right down the street from Quality Meat is Tony’s Market, an Italian specialties store that doubles as a butcher shop. Tony’s is particularly well-known for their house-made pork sausages, but there’s a decent selection of red meat available too. Of course, there’s cheese, cold cuts, and chicken parm sandwiches as well, just in case you get hungry while waiting for your steak to be sliced." - joel ang

Tony-thank you so much for the wonderful meats for our charcuterie boards. The wedding was beautiful and the boards were a hit. Jan Schaffer

I'm so glad I found this place. The meat and poultry products are superb. Fresh cuts or special orders, Tony will be happy to do it for you. The store had a wide assortment of olive oils, condiments, frozen appetizers, pasta, etc. Friendly and helpful staff make this a little gem in the neighborhood.

Google
Tony's market is the best. I always buy the chicken cutlets. When I make them my family all won't miss being at the dinner table! I have been a customer for over 35 years! The best anywhere! Mimi ❤️

Google
One of the best neighborhood meat markets in Boston. Tony, the owner, his wife and great staff are always friendly, helpful and offer top notch service. Oh yeah, they also carry the best selection of meats, cold cuts, cheeses and home made foods.

Google
The best Italian sub and cannoli I’ve ever had. For the Italian sub, the ration of meats, cheese, toppings and vinegar is perfection. The cannolis are far more superior thank Mike’s and Modern. I think the key is the fresh citrus. Incredible.

If you need quality meats, cheeses, or imported Italian shelf stable goods look no further. Tony and his staff are absolutely incredible. They are so friendly, the first time I walked in I felt like I was a regular. They only stock the best quality products and are very helpful whether you are looking for specific or to try something new. Everything is priced fairly and they regularly have sales that keep my freezer stocked with a weeks worth of meals at least. I always keep some homemade hot sausage on hand in case I'm in a pinch and if you need an easy weeknight dinner, Tony's weekly dinner specials are great. If you can't tell I really can't say enough good things. Tony's Market really is a gem of the neighborhood and city. There aren't many places like this around these days which makes me and my family even more greaful. Thanks Tony for keeping me and my family well fed and happy. We look forward to the next time we stop by.

Google
In about 3 minutes I bought some great hamburger, steak and sausage, some delicious lemon cake, and a quick lesson on how to cook the meat. Very charming and helpful staff. The store is clean and beautiful. 10/10. I'll be back for some pointers on cooking better pasta.

Google
The Italian is a game changer, ingredients are amazing, the meat portion is perfect. The sandwiches are definitely quality over quantity but it’s 100000000% worth it.

Yelp
Stores like this one are a uniquely East coast experience. Owner owned and operated, bringing you quality flavors and experiences from Italy. Hand made sausages, great cuts of meats and other goodies to pick up to cook with your purchases. Very knowledgeable staff here and questions are encouraged. Couple of things to make your shopping experience better: Parking is tight and there is no parking lot. Be ready to walk a block. During the daytime you will have no problem. This place is popular and they will sell out of popular items around holidays. Plan ahead!!!! (Those sausages are amazing!!!!)

Yelp
Always a pleasurable experience at Tony's. I needed pork and beef to make Bolognese - he ground the meat while I waited - fresh ground meat on a busy Saturday before Christmas. That's service!

Yelp
Love Tony's! Such a great neighborhood spot. We've moved out of Roslindale, but still make a special trip there to pick up our meats. Great quality items and a lovely team!

Yelp
I stop in for a sandwich when in area.. Excellent sandwiches and always fresh meats ... I then have to buy his homemade sausages as fresh and outstanding. I wish he made more flavors like a Chinese or garlic and cheese or spinach or chicken ... excellent meat market run by 85 year old Tony for 60 years ... need I say more... Quality product, quality service, and the number of people buying only from him for decades... my meat ball sub with melted fresh provolone today... not getting a homemade meatball like that taste anyplace else... All Italian cold cuts high quality...

Yelp
Old time butchers still exist and his name is Tony. Prime meats are the norm here and Tony is all too eager to offer advice as to how much you need or best cut to order for your party. BTW opera night occurs every week in the store in the evenings!!

Yelp
Went here for the first time after looking for a butcher. Picked up a brisket for an amazing price per pound and had some suggestions on other meats. The people we're awesome and we ended up getting the spicy sausage after their suggestion. It is great!! Really looking forward to smoking this brisket on Sunday. Will probably buy my meats that I care about from this place from now on. TLDR: great amazing small neighborhood feel; better prices than you'd get at you're grocery store

Yelp
I ordered a 4 rib prime rib for New Years dinner. I was absolutely the best prime rib my guests have ever eaten. It was an absolute hit! Quality, trimming, taste were complete perfection!!!!!

Yelp
A true gem in the neighborhood, we're so happy they exist- great food, nice people, long-standing local business, they've got it all. They're known for their butchery/meats and Italian goodies, but their sandwiches and prepared food offerings are actually really good too- my favorite thus far is their chicken parm, because their cutlets are huge, fried very nicely (perfectly GBD), flavorful on their own, but even more so paired with their not-bland marinara sauce and their tasty pasta, and it makes for an excellent, easy, reasonably priced Friday night dinner. We got a turkey from them for Thanksgiving which was solid, and even their desserts are excellent. I almost wish they had more of a full market, because then we could spend alllll our $$ here.

Yelp
Tony's Market it Great. Their meats are top quality and they offer a wide variety of meats and sandwiches and prepared dishes. I'm a customer for life.

First time as a shopper and this place is spotless. Staff was kind and friendly. Food varieties and fair prices. Enjoyed coming here. Excelent environment. Will be back!

Yelp
Awesome! Old time butcher shop. Knowledgeable. Cares about what he is selling. Quality!

Yelp
Yest another great trip to Tony's Market. Like going home, Tony always provides a warm welcome. Picked up a Sirloin Strip, cut by Tony the way I like it. Been going here for years and always great and warm greeting. As far as the steak goes, the best I've been able to find anywhere. I'm sure I have enough to get me at least into the holidays, maybe beyond. Thank You once again Tony

Yelp
The best meats around. Reasonable prices and great sales as well. Worth the trip! My go to for steaks, tips and sausage.

Yelp
Tony's is a staple in Roslindale and we absolutely love them! We particularly like picking up pasta from Italy, homemade sausage, and even whole chickens. It's easy to call ahead and ask for what you need. Tony and his staff are super kind and approachable, willing to answer any question you may have about their offerings. During COVID-19, Tony's has been a particularly important resource for the community and has taken considerable precautions to ensure safety, including marking out places for individuals to stand to make sure shoppers and staff do not get within 6 feet of one another. Additionally, they are limiting the number of people in the store at anytime. Tony's is amazing, but it's particularly important to support them during these difficult times. Please join me in doing so!

Yelp
Stopped in for a real deal Italian sandwich. Not disappointed. Excellent. Thin slice tasty cold cuts on a wonderful soft fresh Italian bread. 2 sandwiches and 2 Italian sodas for $15 and change. Quick service and friendly staff. Many other items available. Very nice owner Tony shared some of his stories. Coming to America from Italy on a ship with the actor Brazzi who starred in film South Pacific. Fascinating. Can't wait to return. Smiling thinking about it.

A J.

Yelp
The absolute best. Excellent meats and Italian pantry staples with friendly service.

Yelp
Had the turkey sandwich. The turkey is cooked the night before so no preservatives! Had it with sirracha mayo, lettuce, and tomato. Very good! They also sell duck, beef, and a host of Italian groceries. Was attempted to buy the chocolate bars but resisted. Service is friendly and fast. Will return next time my wife gets a haircut.

Yelp
We are newcomers to Tony & Deb' special place; love the history, tradition, service and superb quality. First purchase amoung several items was a Prime, Prime 9 rib cut! My first time cooking rib roast and was pleased with the wonderful outcome. Prime, prime means something, Tony may be able to explain my term. Not all prime roasts are cut from prime grade, surprise surprise. Tony's is, hallelujah! Prime / Choice / Select - in that order Next I'm waiting for a pork rib roast, com'on folks get an order in so Tony can bring 'em in!

Yelp
Thank you Tony and Orlando for the fabulous veal cutlets. I was able to make, for the first time, wonderful Wiener Schnitzel for friends. I recommend Tony's Market without reservation for high quality products.

Yelp
Went there late yesterday afternoon. No doubt,...Tony's has the best sausage we have ever tasted. Trust me on this one, we have tried a ton of places as well and nothing has compared to "Tony's" !!! We had a chance to talk with Tony and his helper as well, and the are both great guys. Will be going back again for his "USDA Prime" cuts of steaks as well. If your looking for "The Best Sausage" then Tony's the place!!! www.tonysmarketroslindale.com

Yelp
The best!! Seriously the best butcher in Boston. We discovered Tony's on an Off the Beaten Path Food Tours tour of Rozzie and now travel here from Somerville for their delicious meats and cheeses, imported goods, prepared foods, and cannoli. Sue is an amazing chef and Deb and Tony are delights. They are professional and source high quality foods, and they're a lot of fun to learn from as well. Enjoyed the Opera music in the shop. Just an all around fantastic place!

Yelp
Great little Italian deli located in Brookline. Tony is an old-school guy with a great Italian accent. Very friendly and helpful. I went there for a variety of charcuterie and mozzarella. Ended up leaving with much much more. LOL Convenient location to me and is my new go to place for Italian meats and pastas.

Yelp
I have to admit, Tony's Market was superb. I really love Tony's Market especially the ambiance they have set up. Every single thing that we ordered was super fresh and yummy. The service was amazing. They were fast, reliable, and got everything right. Good luck Tony's Market.

Yelp
If you haven't tried the hot pastrami sandwich he offers, you are missing out. It was like a bite of heaven. It came on a perfectly toasted deli roll, with melted cheese, mustard, a little bummed out they didn't have pickles, but everything else made up for it. The pastrami was so lean and juicy, it melted right in my mouth. I didn't want it to come to a end. My 7 year old took a bite and I had to fight with her to get it back.

Yelp
Time and again the Italian sub- simple but meats soooo fresh!!!! Tony and his small crew are very accommodating. Some day when on way home would love to try the meats!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing butcher! Patient and friendly staff, if you have a big order it's best to call ahead. They have amazing prosciutto, pastas and the best sea salt crackers!

Yelp
Love this place! Tony and his staff are always friendly and generous and their sandwiches are delicious. Today we got a curbside pickup and we're so grateful for their hard work to help us have delicious food in these strange times.

Yelp
I love Tony's Market! They have amazing food, variety of products and great prices! Just came back from Italy and compared some prices...I was amazed because some prices are cheaper with him than in Italy!!!! And well....I have to say that Tony and Deb are super sweet and kind people!

Yelp
Can't believe that I have not reviewed this place yet. We've been getting meat and mozzarella here for a long time. What tickled me to write this review was a Saturday purchase of some sausages for a spur of the moment grillfest we were planning back home. The sausages were *incredible* - easily the highlight of the meal and they were also the first leftovers to go as well in later days. We'll be back for a much larger order very soon. The other reviewers are right about weekend shopping - since they don't open on Sunday they start clearing out the fridge case by Saturday afternoon. Always best to hit them on Sat. morning or call ahead if you really need something in particular.

Yelp
Tony's! What else can I say. Awesome people in there, meats are delicious Pricey but well worth it Thank you Tony

Yelp
Wow, real food from folks that have a continental palate. There is a meet market with fine cuts. Good for a little Italian food shopping, butcher or American sandwich.

Yelp
If you notice something right away it's there are two three star reviews the rest five. 21/23 that pretty darn good. The Delmonico steak cut is better then Capital Grille's (in-fact it just makes them look bad.) plus it is 1/4 of the price. Sausage read below they are on the best sausages I have had in my life. Lamb, Turkey, are all excellent. As something you can bring home and serve for Thanksgiving or Easter. The cold cuts are excellent too Ham, Prosciutto, and Salami! It's worth traveling from NH for. Thank you Tony!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This guy is great. My mother-in-law was in town for Thanksgiving and wanted to make an old Cajun recipe and got the exact cuts of beef and chicken that she needed to make the stew and it turned out great. This past weekend, we smoked a bunch of meats at my house and he convinced me that I needed pork butt and promptly cut up about 4 pounds of pork butt that were the goddamn shit! We smoked that in a smoker grill for about 7 hours and it was AWESOME! I'll definitely come back.

Yelp
I've loved Tony's Market for 30 years. So important to my family & our Roslindale community. I've produced many memorable family Sunday dinners thanks to his prime quality meats. So adaptable and still managing to offer prime meats during COVID-19. My favorite rib-eye steaks, lamb chops & leg, pork steaks & sausages. Curbside delivery and in-store experience are quite good, but I do miss my chats with Tony sitting next to his carving table. It can be hard between the two of us to fully hear/understand each other with masks on. But I'm grateful for and fully understand our precautions. God Bless Tony and the whole Market team!

Yelp
So cool! Places like this make me appreciate living in a city. I felt like I was transported to Little Italy in NY the moment I stepped into Tony's. Maybe is was the coziness of the shop. Maybe it was the romantic Italian music playing softly in the background. Maybe it was the wall of pasta and sauce and jarred olives. Maybe it was the aroma of imported pancetta. Or maybe it was the unbelievably accommodating and knowledgable shop owner behind the counter who reminded me of Robert DeNiro. The customers who were in with me were obviously all regulars (they knew what they wanted and Tony knew who they were). I love that - it's a sign of of a really great spot. They had some samples out and my, oh-my, it was all amazing. I went home with a couple pounds of deli-meat, some Sicilian olives and some handmade pasta. I can't wait to go back, I keep missing them before dinner time for steaks and stuff. They close rather early, between 3 and 5 most days. Must try and then you will keep going back!

Yelp
There's really nothing more to say about Tony's other than he is a master at his craft. You don't get to run a successful business for 48 years without doing a lot right and that man has definitely figured it all out. From fresh veal, pork, beef, and chicken to some of the best imported cheese and cured meats that will rival any shop in the North End, quality and service are the hallmarks of Tony's Market. If you can't find what you want on his site, or in the store, ask him if he'll order that hard to find item and if for some reason he couldn't, he'd probably tell you where you could find it. More often than not, he'll have it. I ordered whole rabbit, duck, house-made sausage, smoked pancetta, and everything for tiramisu for Christmas. Call ahead to see if he needs time getting something. Chicken is Bell and Evans. And pastas are made locally, in Hyde Park - excellent stuff! If you live close by, there is absolutely ZERO reason to not be shopping here for meats. It's not even close to debatable, unless you really just don't care and if that were the case, you probably wouldn't be reading this right now.

Jay L.

Yelp
Nobody has cheese and sausage like Tony's! Their sausages are heavenly. So much flavor! Be aware that if you get fresh mozzarella in the water, it, like all other brands, lasts only about 2-3 days in the fridge. I love supporting the small locally owned shops, and Tony's is a standout.

Yelp
What a great guy! - and what a beautiful little market. This is the kind of place that makes city living worthwhile, and the Rosi Square neighborhood such a surprisingly civilized and comfortable part of Boston. Don't be shy about introducing yourself as a new customer - Tony is sincerely warm and friendly. I agree with Katie's review that Tony's sausage is great - worth dropping in for by themselves (they freeze well too). He carries the basic cuts of meat, and he'll custom cut as well, although if you're looking for something big like a whole butterflied leg of lamb, it's essential to call ahead. His meats are very good quality. As far as the standard Italian deli meats/cheeses (eg parmesan reggiano, proscuttio, linguica, etc) - I find they're always available. And if anything, he carries so many different choices of Italian dry/canned goods that it can feel intimidating at first. But it's all of superior quality and pretty darn close to supermarket prices The store is not open on Sundays or Mondays (like many small businesses in Rosi Square... or Italy). But Tony's nephew is helping him out these days, so the stores hours have re-expanded a bit for the rest of the week. In particular, he's open on Saturdays for a decent chunk of time, which I find very useful during the summer when the Saturday morning open-air farmer's market in Rosi square is around. Some sausage from Tony's, some basil and a few heirloom tomatoes from the farmer's market, a loaf of fresh peasant bread from Fornax - the makings of a Tuscan feast!

Yelp
This is our go to meat shop. The family treats you like you're part of it and he quality is on point. Tony was out of burger meat and he ground some fresh for us... even though he was about to close. Love the new location (and the sausages)

Jean R.

Yelp
Where to begin...this market is just awesome! Tony treats his customers with great customer service and top notch products. He makes the best Italian sausages and delivers the greatest veal cutlets...so tender! The best prosciutto and mozzarella cheese can be found here too. His meats and cold cuts are always fresh and ready to be sliced to fit your needs. At his new location he has begun selling some of his family's own prepared foods. His meatballs and gravy are a good choice on days you don't feel like cooking. If you haven't visited Tony's Market you are missing out on a great neighborhood gem! Kudos to Tony's Market

Yelp
Every week: his handmade Sausages, cold cuts and cheese

Joe G.

Yelp
Great local family market. Neighborhood joint, its been around for decades. Friendly service. They make their own sausage, and it is excellant.

Nina V.

Yelp
If you haven't been here: GO. Great sausages and other meats. One of the few local places you can get butcher shop services. Great selection of Italian foods.

pAUL C.

Yelp
Tony, is the man.. a veritable monument in the Rosi hood and what a beautiful store! Obviously he could be sipping vino somewhere else but he does what he loves and it shows!

Yelp
Stopped in at Tony's new location yesterday for some extraordinarily delicious filet mignons and thin veal cutlets. Great to have a butcher who carries local farm-raised meats. Prices are comparable to Roche's or Whole Foods, but the quality and service are much better. The new store is beautiful and parking is easy. They are doing prepared foods now, too, and it smelled delicious. They also offer a very wide selection of imported Italian meats, cheeses, pastas, etc. Great place.

Yelp
The sheer magnitude of Yelp love for Tony's sent me there yesterday, where I found Tony alone, slicing meat, and whistling along with the opera blaring from his boom box. He let me browse in peace, then we had a great chat about food, loving what you do, and the origins of his much-loved meat products. He told me the secret of his famed sausages, but I'll never tell. I will certainly frequent his shop, especially since I live relatively nearby. I only bought a few things -- sumptuous imported prosciutto, two balls of fresh mozzarella, and some canned Italian tuna in oil, all more than satisfactory quality. I hesitate to give five stars only because I wish that his meats were sourced locally and not from massive meat corporations. I know many customers are happy with the quality of the meat, but my policy on meat-eating forbids it. But I will return, and will buy his other products gladly, and hum along with 'Nessun Dorma' whilst ogling the shelves laden with Italian goodness.
