The 15 Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Houston

"Tony’s Mexican Restaurant in Garden Oaks keeps recipes super classic, like their ground beef enchiladas. Their greatest hit is the peppery al carbon mini street tacos that magically melt into the flour tortillas. And most importantly, the frozen margaritas here taste like candy and happiness. This no-frills spot has been open since the ‘90s, is filled with longtime regulars, and at least one of them will be at least one group celebrating a birthday at any given time. But even on your first visit here, the formally dressed staff wastes no time making you feel welcome, like you’ve been coming here since they first opened their doors. Haven't been in years, very loud and my drink Paloma did lack any good stuff. Food was bland and plain. Outside patio was very hot & there was no fly control. Great music playing out in the parking lot 🎶 😁

Houston Guy

Google
The service is good but the food is very bland and ridiculously over priced. If the food was delicious then a high price is understandable, but the tiny portions and flavorless dishes here are just a waste of money. However the staff is friendly and very attentive. The interior theme feels like a wood box and doesn't lend at all to a Mexican restaurant dining experience. Save your time and money, go somewhere else.

Google
The food and service were great. We came here after another restaurant told us the wait would be over an hour. Here we were seated very quickly. The margaritas were strong, and the fajitas were great. The only fluke was I ordered guacamole as an appetizer...it was really a lot of guac but not a lot of seasoning. The atmosphere was pretty loud between the people and the tvs. All you can do is eat because you probably have to yell to hear each other. On a weekday, I imagine it might be calmer. Overall, a great restaurant!

Google
Came for a quick bite and drink. Jumbo margaritas were delicious and hit the spot, which was recommended by my server Mynor. He recommends the beef fajitas and the meat was really tender. Mynor took good care of us. Will definitely come back!

Google
Checked out Tony’s recently and tried the beef fajita enchilada—and wow, it hit the spot! The beef was super tender and flavorful, and the enchilada had that perfect smoky, savory taste you want in a good mexican dish. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned. The service was great, too friendly, and made me feel welcome right away. It really added to the overall experience.

Google
They screwed me today. I got finished early at work, had my wife call in lunch and I picked it up. When I got home they left my plate off the order. I called them about it and the manager thought it was funny. She couldn't care less that they left my plate off the order. I ask to order the plate they left off and went to get it, the manager was too much of a coward to come out and discuss the matter with me. They cost me my afternoon and didn't even care. And they got paid good money to screw me around. Order tale out at your own risk.

Family met here to celebrate my mother's and brother's birthdays. Food was great, service was excellent.

Yelp
The food I get there is very flavorful and delicious. The prices could be lowered a little bit. It's a little pricey, but overall good.

Yelp
I am updating Tony's and giving it 2 stars. The food is the same, but the owner, who used to make the ambience like going to church, now has added 70+ inch TV screens EVERYWHERE. You cannot escape it. We will NOT be going back. What the heck, dude???

Yelp
Love this place. Flies under the radar but good lord is it good. The food: started off with a chile con queso. Solid. Different. (Ask for extra jalapeños). Usually go for one of the combos, but today went with the Tony's Parrilla (with side of taquero sauce), cheese enchiladas, and an "El Coerver" for the table (kids cheese burger with chile con carne, grilled onions & jalapeños- do not miss this!). Finished with the churros. The flour tortillas are also great, corn could use improvement, but not enough to dock points (I prefer flour). Service: great. Glasses never empty, margaritas were flowing, prompt. Efficient. Ambiance: a classic tex-mex joint, through and through. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I'm so glad I went yesterday. It's been a long minute. Sooooo good! The salsa is warm and delicious. I couldn't stop eating it. I ordered the first thing off the lunch menu. I didn't get the name. It came with a crispy taco, puff with queso, cheese enchilada & guacamole. I was a little sad that it didn't come with rice & beans, it was good the way it was & it left me room for dessert. Everything was delicious and fresh. The guacamole was creamy and delicious too. I opted for the tres leches after asking the attentive server and it was good, not the best in my opinion but not the worst. Staff was very attentive. The only thing was the music seemed to be really loud. Or maybe I'm just getting old. Lol Will definitely be back.

Yelp
On May 7 I took my son to Tony's for dinner. He was in town for medical follow up appointments and had requested to go to Tony's for dinner. We arrived and my son had a small apple juice bottle with about an inch of apple juice in the bottle which was his cancer medication that he needs to take at dinner time. He was told by the manager that he could not take the bottle in with him. My son said "it is my medicine", the manager said "well I can't allow you to take it in". I looked at the manager and said "he has cancer and it is his medicine". His reply was "I can't allow you to take it in". Needless to say we will not be returning to this restaurant. Horrible customer service!!!

Yelp
Great Tex Mex food and service. Really enjoyed the experience. Prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Food was great but the people who works there they judge you for everything I feel very unwelcome, I feel that they need to teach them manners. Very nice place but people like that make it ugly.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Not really out vibe... food was okay but expensive vs the quality / flavors. The restaurant reminded me of the family style restaurants I'd go to as a child in the 90's, meaning it's a good spot if you have a young child / or family. Service was pretty good.
google avatar

Lou C.

Yelp
I ordered beef fajita enchiladas and was very disappointed. First, the meat was NOT recognizable as fajita meat; more like cubed round steak. Second, the enchiladas were drenched in cheese sauce nullifying any chance of tasting the alleged fajita meat. Third, the refried beans were runny and tasteless. Lastly, the chips were stale and tasted awful. On top of it all, I've never eaten in such a depressing restaurant environment in my life!!! Sorry for all the negativity but that was my experience. I wish them well but I'm amazed that they have stayed in business as long as they have,

Yelp
Visited this place during my lunch break with some coworkers. The hostesses were super friendly from the moment we walked in greeting us with a warm welcome. They walked us to our table where immediately a server came over and got our drink order. We ordered skinny margaritas to start off. My margarita was perfect but my coworker said hers was too strong. The waiter noticed her reaction and offered to fix the problem for her. Super nice! They bring complementary chips and salsa but we also ordered queso. I was surprised at how good it was! Super flavorful and came with a side of pickled jalapenos. So good! For my entre I ordered the pechuga poblana stuffed with shrimp. This is a huge dish! This shrimp stuffed chicken breast comes smothered in the most delicious and creamy poblano sauce. It also cames with white rice, homemade tortillas, and some of the best black beans ever. The black beans were the highlight of the entire meal for me. This Mexican spot really nailed the beans!!! I have a small appetite so I ended up taking half of my plate to go. It tasted just as good for lunch the next day. My coworkers also really enjoyed the food here and we have decided to add this to our frequent lunch spots. 10/10 service and food quality so you really cannot ask for more!
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
Complimentary chips and salsa? Check. Margarita specials? Check. Good service? Check. I've passed by this place before but haven't been able to try until recently. It's a great place to burn off some steam over drinks with good people. I enjoyed my 1/2 and 1/2 margarita and the chips and dip are on point. I also enjoyed my Heights Combo, it has birria flautas, chicken quesadilla, and a cheese enchilada. It was all delicious. I'll be back for more drinks and good food.

Yelp
Came to this place with some co workers that live around the area and they recommended it so I decided to check it out. When I walked in, I expected it to be an older place and not so well kept but it looked good on the inside. I requested a table for five and I was shown to my table right away. They were having happy hour until 6pm, $5 margaritas. I had a half mango, half strawberry with a chamoy rim. It was strong! It wasn't the best but best bang for your buck for sure. I also ordered a model after that and they served me the beer with a nice frosted mug, I liked that. The chips and house salsas were good and the chili con queso was great as well. Didn't take a pic of it. For my meal I ordered the nachos, half beef and half chicken. The cheese was a generous amount and tasted good! It came with jalapeños and sour cream and Guacamole. Over all the food and drinks weren't bad, it's not expensive either and service was very good. If you're in the area, stop by!

Yelp
This review is mainly for Uber eats. Loyal customer usually go once a week but when I'm sick or busy we Uber eats... All 3 times they keep forgetting my margarita & they usually try to blame the driver. This time we specifically told the driver 2 drinks and once he showed up he said nope they said you only ordered a Dr Pepper. Talked to the manager and he said once your husband gets there let's see what I can do for him..I guess what he did was leave my margarita in front cause the front hostess had no clue & said the manager told her nothing. Geeez not even throw in some free chips (that are usually free) anyways lost 2 customers that tip pretty awesome.

Yelp
Best neighborhood mexican joint in Houston. Cheese enchiladas or brisket enchiladas... dealers choice!

Ivy G.

Yelp
Always friendly; courteous and happy staff! Food is excellent as are the unlimited chips and salsa; guacamole and cheese dip are wonderful as are their margaritas! Come before 6:00 on Fridays as the restaurant fills up really quickly.

Yelp
Ive been going to Tony's since it opened in 1992. Its my fav! We love Tony's! We always go for our families birthdays!

B M.

Yelp
Ok so who doesn't love a Tony's margarita?? Exactly everyone comes here for the margs but the food is great too! Love the staff & how fun it is here however I will say I do tend to stay away during holidays it is too much! Other than that nothing bad to say about Tony's
google avatar

Neema M.

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a Friday night without a rez and we were told it would be 25 mins, but it was only 5 mins before we were seated!! They have plenty of parking and there was a band outside to keep you entertained while you wait. Ambiance It is loud. We could barely hear each other and sounds seemed to echo. Service Very fast service and friendly staff. Food/Drink The drinks came out quick and were tasty. The skinny marg was strong. The brisket enchiladas were no bueno like we couldn't eat a second bite. It was burnt and dry and just funky. The fajitas were yummy though!! Enjoyed the beef and the flour tortillas. We ordered the churros and they absolutely made up for the gross enchiladas. So good!! Overall, I would come back for the fajitas and the churros. Maybe just order out to avoid the noisiness.

Emily W.

Yelp
Pros: plain cheese queso, staff, margaritas, green salsa, vibes, fajita chicken, kid friendly Cons: flour tortillas (too thick of dough), fajita steak tougher than preferred.

Yelp
I have now been here 3 times with a group of friends, and I don't understand why they like this place - or did. The first time I had the flautas and it seems like the grease was old and/or they left them sitting if not hot enough grease. When served they were sitting in a pool of grease. Ok, no biggie; one time I could forgive especially since they were extremely busy on the Sunday I went. The next time I went in the group's regular Tuesday dinner there, and I tried the Chicken Fajita tacos al carbon. The chicken was dry and there wasn't much flavor to it. For the price I was expecting a really good tasty dinner but that wasn't the case. This week I joined the group for Tuesday dinner and tried the shredded chicken enchiladas on corn tortillas, and this time they nailed it. Unfortunately I was the only one happy with how things were going. All were complaining about their margaritas and the two major differences than how they used to be (the reason they had decided to make their Tuesday group dinners at Tony's). First and foremost was the taste: they complained that the margaritas no longer taste great. The second change is the alcohol content in the frozen margaritas was such that the drink tasted only of too sweet mix and no alcohol. Then, for a group having come almost every week for years, they couldn't get a white wine - and when one was found it wasn't chilled (and even after being told they still wanted it, it was never put on ice). With so many options for Tex Mex restaurants in Houston, customer service is the one thing that can make a difference - and evidently the margaritas and customer service used to be spectacular. Listening to the group members, they made comments about another place that they preferred the food and margaritas, but the customer service here used to be so great the group preferred here over other places. Our server was amazing! She was able to delicately take care of the table even with all the grumblings, but the ownership management has definitely changed in the loss of quality customer service compared to the older generation of ownership that used to own the restaurant. As one group member said as we were leaving: this just isn't the same Tony's we used to enjoy coming to. Since I drive an hour to come join them - I have to say other than seeing my friends, Tony's isn't worth the drive.

Marilyn C.

Yelp
The food is consistently great. We had a party of 15 for lunch on Christmas Eve. It was the first time that 13 of our party had been there. Everyone loved it. My son-in-law and grandson are beef fajitas lovers. They said Tony's was the best they had ever eaten. The service for our large group was so wonderful too. They are definitely a five star Mexican restaurant Also we all loved the Bible versus all over the restaurant
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Really, really good Tex-Mex. Guess I've gotten lucky every time here because I'm pretty baffled by some of the bad reviews. The tacos Al carbon are tender and flavorful. The cheese enchiladas had a nice scald on the cheese and the chili con carne was serviceable. The chips are standard and the salsa is served warm so no issues there. The rice and beans were good as well. My daughter got a chicken enchilada with a verde sauce that was delicious as well. The extra tortillas were good. The service has been consistently good without being smothering. They are also very accommodating with allowing to order pretty much what you want a La carte. Just a very good experience all around every time I have been.
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
New owner, smaller portions, broken chips, avocado stem in tiny portion of guacamole for $9.50, 3 tortillas for $1.30 and deafening LOUD. Listen to the attached videos. NOT the same! Won't be back!!
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
Carne Asada was one of the best I ever had. Better than getting a steak at any of the high end restaurants.
google avatar

Shanna S.

Yelp
Last year, my mom was assaulted by a female at this restaurant; the manger and owner refused to remove that person from the restaurant. The other female was too busy drinking to manage her loud children. My mother and I were treated horribly because we didn't want to move outside when we were in the resultant first. The owner refused to turn over the footage to the police. Used to be one of my favorite places to eat.
google avatar

Juhi B.

Yelp
Great food and amazing service! They have free valet service and it's definitely a good go to for enchiladas!

Brett G.

Yelp
I went to Tony's about a month ago with some friends on a Friday night despite being advised against going due to this business owner's alleged notorious homophobic tendencies. I did not encounter anything of the sort when I was there, however, I did encounter music that was way too loud the whole way through the meal, making it impossible for us to hear to each other when talking at the dinner table. I also found that the refried beans were extremely soupy, almost as though they had been watered down. The fajita chicken enchiladas had a very cheese-whizy flavor that left me feeling a little bit sick to my stomach. The fajita chicken to cheese ratio was more canned cheese than I could handle! The service was good, despite the shortcomings of the food and the music being too loud. I did ask the waitor at one point if he could turn down the music and he said, "this is every Friday night here," which also left a bad taste in my mouth. We were in a mexican restaurant, not a night club. It didn't quite make any sense.
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Sometimes I reflect on my past behavior and I'm so ashamed. My name is Tom and I'm addicted to chile con queso and tortilla chips. I can't stop. I attacked the chips and queso with the ferocity of a crackhead. Salsa was ok. Beef and chicken fajitas were on pernt. Everything from the bar was good. Service was good. We had a fun time here. Fantastic concert on the patio. I'll be honest with you, I had too much to drink. I remember it being a really good restaurant. Four star level.

Sandy C.

Yelp
Enchiladas were great, I got the cheese and hubby got the beef. Loved both! We even ordered some to take to the in-laws. Service was good, our food came nice and hot, our glasses were never empty, and the waiter was very friendly. The place was packed so it was very loud but would not reason enough to keep us away. We like that it's bright inside.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Very busy place and can get quite loud. The service is very good. Margaritas are strong 4/5 We ordered the Chile con queso 3/5, guacamole Mexicano 4.5/5, brisket enchiladas 3.5/5, chicken fajitas 4/5, flautas de birria 4/5, and carnitas street tacos 4/5.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Food just ok. Nothing special. Drinks very watered down seemingly cheap tequila. Not sure I would need to go here again.

Gina A.

Yelp
Good food and attentive staff! What a great place to spend your meal. The food is delicious. The chips and salsa are never empty. The employees are so nice and attentive!!
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
service was good. we asked not to be bothered until we called him!!!! we like to take our time. He was good for this part We ordered the number 1 and the number 4 combos The ground beef tacos were horrible. The ground beef was dry and unflavored.....very bland. The bean tortilla had almost no beans on it!!!!! I couldnt believe it! I scraped the beans off the tortilla and got less than a half teaspoon. The queso chip, was 95% chip and 5% cheese. What a waste of our money!!!!!! we went without a refill of water the entire time,,,,,, And they want a 20% tip??????
google avatar

Bino A.

Yelp
The best food ever. The atmosphere is so nice and service on point. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming that they make want to eat and drink and come for more. We've been going there for years, our favorite place to eat Mexican cuisine, the warm salsa is a must

Valerie H.

Yelp
Best staff and food! I have been going to Tony's for many years and they never cease to amaze me with their great food and excellent staff. I really like the fajitas and the Margaritas are the best. I would definitely recommend Tony's to anyone who enjoys authentic Mexican food and great ambience.

Bonnie B.

Yelp
This has been my favorite mexican restaurant since the 90's, but the last few times I have been there I have been disappointed. Their Taco Salad shell was inedible, and when I asked they said they changed the recipe. Please go back to the original Tony's recipes because I really miss you.
google avatar

Susy A.

Yelp
They would not sit me bcs i was a single person. The bar was full, and they had plenty of open tables -but that seated 4- AND an open booth, yet they would not sit me bcs i was alone...very unfair. They wanted to put me in the cold covered patio, which i refused...i was not going to freeze just for a taco and KNOWING that there were plenty of open seating inside. Def. Felt mistreated as a single person.
google avatar

Deborah A.

Yelp
Food had no flavor whatsoever. I was very disappointed because you just don't find Mexican food with no seasonings. This restaurant used to be a lot better than this. Thankfully I was their to attend a retirement party. So no money lost.
google avatar

Sergio C.

Yelp
Super gross food. Would not recommend. Store bought chips and watered down unflavored tomato paste salsa "Fish Tacos" are actually just heated up fish sticks in a microwaved corn tortilla Just all bad......
google avatar

Mauro M.

Yelp
Go on have margaritas and chips They are awesome skip the food as it's overpriced junk!! No seriously!! Don't even try to talk to a manager specially this guy Manuel which shows no experience at its job skills Any ways overpriced food good margaritas and terrible service and management. Tex Mex Combo Plate

Roy M.

Yelp
Margaritas are weak and too sweet. Informed management several times. No changes. Bye

Gerard S.

Yelp
Just caught Tony M e x I c a n restaurant drinking siding, trees and a bunch of trash on the townhouse properties next to their parking lot. You should haul that away for being so religious you are doing something that is illegal dumping. Have pictures and the license plate plus the video of the old man saying he had permission. Will be contacting the city Tuesday. Fines start at $2000 per the city website

Dylan G.

Yelp
They could improve literally everything. Rip off prices, crappy food, terrible service. I once got pinned for a $600 remainder bill on a party of 25, come to find out there were tons of items on our bill that nobody had ordered. Same thing happened to another poor guy on cinco de Mayo the next year in our party (I knew not to pay last). The management is nasty, you can order 3 large queso's to go but you will NEVER get more than 1 bag of chips without paying extra for it. The workers are also dumb as a box of rocks. It's literally the worst Mexican food establishment in all of the heights. BUT the ambiance is very great and it is really a fun environment inside. Be careful of the margaritas because they use everclear so they will f*** you up beyond all recognition plus give you the worst hangover of your life.
google avatar

Gilberto V.

Yelp
The food is good, though it seems that more often than not I get into some odd discussion with a waiter on what I want my food to be. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back as I literally step in for lunch and I wanted a specific combo meal and to add refried beans (a single +$1.50 charge). This should not be that big a deal. However, the waiter then proceeds to try to sell me another combo (mine had all beef items, the one he suggested had chicken) and he goes "Sir, this one has refried beans." So I said: "Yes, but then I have to switch the Chicken to Beef for $3 more, but with the way I want it, I just order all beef and then add the Frijoles for $1.50." He stops and goes "Yes, sir, but this one has the frijoles." After an unusually long and uncomfortable pause, I go back and explain it all again. He then goes, and I quote "Yes sir, but the Chicken one has the refried beans." And then, and here I was a bit of a jerk because I was hangry and losing it, "I don't f****** like Chicken on my TexMex. Please just give me what I want. Plus it's cheaper!" I ended up apologizing, though let's be real, this was highly avoidable. My bringing this up is simply because we have had a few waiters (we being the times that I go in with my wife) in the past who have tried to steer us to other combinations when we know what we want and we see what the costs are (kudos to Tony's for ALWAYS being direct on the menu) and so we do NOT wish to be steered to something else. The food is great, the live music Fridays are awesome - someone just needs to train the waitstaff to understand sometimes the customer just wishes you to execute on how THEY want the food.

Ms L.

Yelp
Loved the food and the atmosphere. Such a great place for a family dinner. Ms. Linda approved.

Xicana V.

Yelp
First time and it was just ok. The food was average nothing special. I would even go back but probably won't due to the extreme noise level! My husband and I went for dinner and were trying to talk which was impossible! The tables are also tightly packed in and waiters are flying behind you the entire time seating was a mess. The big parties were super loud !! We just ate quickly and left so yeah won't be back a shame because I thought of bringing a big party but we are not that damn loud super irritating. Loud is one this yelling is another !!

Yelp
The most underrated Mexican food place in Houston. Wow! So surprised. The service was amazing! We ordered and only a few minutes later the food was out and hot. Everything we ordered was amazing and the drinks are so strong so be all careful. The wait staff (Yohel) was great and very nice. I love that you pay from a handheld machine so split checks are super easy and fast. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
Oh Tony's ... how long have I loved you? I can't count the ways or the number of times I have been to your establishment, an interesting mix of strong margaritas and the Israeli flag. Last week once again I headed to my favorite Mexican place to partake in some well priced Mexican fare along with a good old Tonys marg. At some point in the "up until this point" rather uneventful evening, the marg. got me thinking that I needed to pee so off I went to "Los banos". However and this is where the story takes a sharp left turn, or maybe a hard right turn, somewhere around the point of the evening, as I stepped off the carpeted floor and onto the slick black uneven flooring you all may refer to as the "bar area" ... I slipped and fell. I zigged when I should have zagged, I cut right when I should have cut left, whatever I did I did in the name of turning back to retrieve my mask from which I had forgotten on the table .. when all of the sudden I found myself hitting the ground... hard... right on my knees. So hard, that the bar table full of people looked with fear as they said "we knew that was going to happen we just told them the floor was wet but they did not clean it" ... um what? I immediately looked at the bartender and another person standing there and gasped as in "I just ate shit" however, they both looked at me as if I had two heads - they clearly witnessed the entire saga? - why so surprised by my reaction? I then told the server and he said it was being "handled" - just not exactly sure what that means - not even a quick "hey I'm so sorry" from the manager on duty? Or maybe just maybe she would comp my churros so I would feel as good when oI left as I did when I walked in? Nope - not a word Honestly, at 50, hurting my ego (or getting embarrassed ) is not at the top of my list of things to worry about , but hurting myself ... well that is! And I did! And someone else is going too as well! Someone who eating shit may mean something a lot more serious than bruised knees. Sad part is, I've slipped on that floor before as have my friends (pre Margs.) so it's clearly become the norm. Do better Tonys! Just do better - I am going to give my usual 4 stars because I won't stop enjoying the enchiladas or the Margs., but I will never walk on that slippery, uneven, bar floor again... and I suggest you don't either. OUCH!
