I have now been here 3 times with a group of friends, and I don't understand why they like this place - or did. The first time I had the flautas and it seems like the grease was old and/or they left them sitting if not hot enough grease. When served they were sitting in a pool of grease. Ok, no biggie; one time I could forgive especially since they were extremely busy on the Sunday I went. The next time I went in the group's regular Tuesday dinner there, and I tried the Chicken Fajita tacos al carbon. The chicken was dry and there wasn't much flavor to it. For the price I was expecting a really good tasty dinner but that wasn't the case. This week I joined the group for Tuesday dinner and tried the shredded chicken enchiladas on corn tortillas, and this time they nailed it. Unfortunately I was the only one happy with how things were going. All were complaining about their margaritas and the two major differences than how they used to be (the reason they had decided to make their Tuesday group dinners at Tony's). First and foremost was the taste: they complained that the margaritas no longer taste great. The second change is the alcohol content in the frozen margaritas was such that the drink tasted only of too sweet mix and no alcohol. Then, for a group having come almost every week for years, they couldn't get a white wine - and when one was found it wasn't chilled (and even after being told they still wanted it, it was never put on ice).
With so many options for Tex Mex restaurants in Houston, customer service is the one thing that can make a difference - and evidently the margaritas and customer service used to be spectacular. Listening to the group members, they made comments about another place that they preferred the food and margaritas, but the customer service here used to be so great the group preferred here over other places.
Our server was amazing! She was able to delicately take care of the table even with all the grumblings, but the ownership management has definitely changed in the loss of quality customer service compared to the older generation of ownership that used to own the restaurant. As one group member said as we were leaving: this just isn't the same Tony's we used to enjoy coming to. Since I drive an hour to come join them - I have to say other than seeing my friends, Tony's isn't worth the drive.
