The Essential Atlanta Barbecue Restaurants and Pop-Ups

"Tookes keeps its menu tight serving up classic Southern barbecue plates of smoked chicken, racks of ribs, smoked sausage links, and pulled pork sandwiches paired with Brunswick stew, fried okra, and potato salad. There may be a wait for food here as this is a small operation, so be patient." - Eater Staff

Driving by this place and seeing the outside is what initially intrigued me. Now normally, whole in the wall, off the beaten path places heighten my interest, but after trying this food today, I now know why I always drove past this place. When I first opened the food, it didn't smell 100% fresh, and then my order was wrong. I ordered the rib, chicken, and chop combo with green beans and okra. Instead of receiving green beans, I got a double portion of baked beans. When I opened the container, the bbq sauce was spilling out, so I already knew everything was oversauced to cover up the boo boo inside. That bbq sauce was not only off-putting but 1 whiff, and I was like uh huh I'm not eating that. The chicken was bland and had absolutely no seasoning. The ribs were hard, and the smokiness on it was overpowering. The chopped pork wasn't fresh! Not only was it inedible, but it had a sordid ordor coming from the container. 1 teeny tiny bite of everything gave me an itchy throat and upset stomach, so you can imagine I will be in the bathroom later. I ended up donating the food to my favorite place, the trash! I threw out everything! If you're thinking about coming here, I would stay clear and not even stop.

I am from South Carolina, and I was in Georgia getting my truck serviced. Us South Carolinians love some good bbq. I went out looking for food. So I Google food near me and, this place popped up. That food was so good I would come back to Georgia just to go to this place. The guy that worked there was nice and friendly. The food was off the chain. ❤️

Google
Very disappointed. By the taste the food was not fresh and covered with BBQ sauce to camouflage the chicken and ribs. I know what good and fresh BBQ taste like and this isn’t it. Don’t waste your time nor money I definitely won’t. Dissatisfied customer.

OMG!!! Y'all, please don't let the outside fool you! My daughter and I stopped by to get dinner, trying something new. The service was pleasant. The cook/owner was there alone, but he handled it. Y'all, this food was delicious! Not only was it great, but it was more than enough for the price! I'm a country girl, and I love me some good BBQ, and this was it! Y'all really gotta go in and get a plate. I had the chicken, potato salad, and baked beans. There was enough for 2 days on my plate. And yes, it was still good the second day. Just try it! The food is delicious and the prices are great! Thank you, Tookes!!!

I’ve live in this area 8 years! And Tookes is a never miss ! My fave is the pulled pork sandwich! I’m funny about baked beans but these never miss!!! And mister in the back is fine 😆 sooo good food, great southern hospitality and manners… and eyecandy! I’ll take it !!

Google
Went to Tookes for the second time this year. Their food has changed some. They smoke the meat really well but it still needs more seasoning. I will say they give you enough food for what you pay. The sides were the best thing I've tasted in awhile, especially the mac and cheese.

Google
We hadn’t visited this for a couple months. Unfortunately, we both that the food has dropped off considerably since our last visit. I had the combo plate. The chicken skin was tough and the chicken was dry. The sides (slaw and Mac n cheese) were even worse. I ended up eating the ribs and threw everything else away. My wife had the rib tips of which she said were tasteless. She also threw out half the meal. I really can’t explain what changed but I’m pretty sure I won’t be going back.

Google
This is quite unlike any other restaurant I've been to. It's VERY rustic, VERY old fashioned. But the food is excellent and the former owner, Mr. Tooke, is a cool guy too. If you're in the mood for ribs, this is not a bad place at all.

Yelp
Small, isolated establishment in Rex, GA (outside of Morrow). I believe that it is Black Owned. Service was good, especially with it only being one person there when I went. We tried the chicken, rib, chopped pork combo, rib dinner, smoked sausage, and lemon pound cake. Highlights: Ribs were very good, tender. Potato salad was tasty. Mac n cheese was good. Cake was very enjoyable. Smoked sausage was good as well. Sauce was good, just a lot of it. Pulled pork was solid. Lowlights: Greens were average at best. Chicken half was very dry and the sauce didn't help. If your ever in the area, it's worth a try.

Yelp
The food here is really tasty, and the owner is awesome. Every time I go I get the pulled pork and I enjoy it.

Yelp
Good food and good people at this restaurant. Although it's small there are tables on the inside if you want to eat on the inside.

Yelp
Food is consistently good! I eat here at least once a week. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I'll preface this review with whomever said to not judge a book by its cover obviously never ate at Tookes Country Barbecue. The outside of this place looks like it's about one spark away from going into flames. My wife and I ate take out from here the other day. We ordered the plate with ribs, pulled pork, and half a chicken with a side of beans, mac and cheese and coleslaw. The best thing I can say, is that the bbq sauce was pretty good and the only thing saving the review from being a 1 star. The meat on the ribs, chicken, and pork was all over cooked and stringy. We think that they bbq'd the meal at too high of a temperature and for too long. As for the sides, the mac and cheese and coleslaw were average, and the beans arrived suspiciously looking like potato salad. I don't think we'll return and would not recommend this establishment.

Yelp
Great food and very friendly people!!! Worth a trip to try good bar b que. Tried "It's It" and it wasn't good. Go three miles up the same highway and enjoy real bar b que!!! Be sure to try the links and ribs!!!

Yelp
Wow my friends. Just wow. There are maybe a dozen or so memories a person will remember so vividly that a life of experiences won't fade their potency. A first kiss, birth of a child, first car, ect... Well I can without a doubt add my visit to Tookes' to that list. The bbq was outstanding. Fall off the bone ribs in an original and delicious sweet & tangy sauce. The Brunswick stew was a treat and will be a staple on my return visits here. The pulled pork sandwich was everything God intended great bbq to be. Smokey, juicy and flavorfull. But my friends, hell even my enemies. You must recieve, without hessitation the unbelievable blessing of Tookes homemade peach cobbler. I was moved by its quality and flavor. Smacked right back into my grandmothers kitchen. Full of wonder and awe as a fresh peach cobbler was pulled from her oven. Stunned at how those simple few ingredients could create such an indescribable experience. Amazing. Listen don't even think about it. Get in your car, on a bus, put on your shoes or whatever and go get some Tookes Bbq. My only regret is how long I have passed this place without stopping. DO NOT MISS THE PEACH COBBLER
google avatar

Priscilla A.

Yelp
So to take so long you would think the food would be fresh. I ordered ribs and chicken with collard greens and okra. The meat was dry and hard and they gave me green beans instead of collard greens!!! NEWS FLASH I'M ALLERGIC TO GREEN BEANS SO THAT'S WHY I DID NOT ORDER IT!!!! If you run out of something at least ask the customer instead of just doing whatever you want. I was rushing on my lunch break but wish I checked before I left. Very bad first impression! The okra was fried way too hard too. It was overall just horrible.

Yelp
This is what IMO BBQ in the south is all about. This place is a "joint". keep your fancy signs, your fancy decor. Give me good old fashioned BBQ.. preferably pulled pork and sausage, stew and slaw and I am happy. Tooke's delivers all this and more. Neat folks who do the cooking and the serving. Perhaps Father and Son? In any case, do not miss this place and do not drive by because it is not fancy looking. Not sure where they get their smoked sausage or even if they make it but it is some kind of good but toss the bun they give it to you in and slice it up and slather in some sauce. Put some South in your Mouth.
google avatar

Kelli K.

Yelp
OMG!! If you love authentic southern "BBQ" then you'll love "Tookes BBQ" the chicken plate is to "live for" the chicken falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth, simply "flavor upon flavor" this is definitely one of Georgia's best keep secret! Mr. Tookes is very personable w/ a heart of gold, you can just tell that he appreciates each customer. He gives his customer a chance to experience the history of what authentic southern BBQ really taste like. If your every in Rex, Ga stop by "Tookes BBQ" I assure you that it won't disappoint. Enjoy! Oh..! One more thing try the home made potato salad its Mm.. Mm.. Good!

Yelp
The food is amazing, the customer service is outstanding and I give Tookes Country BarBQue two thumbs up!! Best ribs in Atlanta hands down

Yelp
I have definitely had better bbq, can't say that I will return. The green beans were tasty, but the BBQ was just so so..Mac and Cheese, mediocre and the Peach Cobbler (NOT GOOD) and I love some GOOD Peach Cobbler. I can not say I will return. I was really hoping I would have liked it better

Mildred T.

Yelp
Sadly, the tip were burnt and very tough. The peeach cobbler was mushy. The Mac and cheese was okay. The bake beans were very good.
google avatar

Shasta G.

Yelp
The place is T-I-N-Y and rough. The menu is limited but they still managed to get our order wrong. The food was passable but nothing special. The counter clerk was completely disinterested. Bottom line: They offer no customer service and forgettable food. p.s. They are NOT honoring restaurant.com certificates.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is incredible. Yes it looks like a shack on the side of the road, but aren't those the best places sometimes?? The food was all around delicious and perfectly cooked. The bbq sauce was flavorful and not over powering like some can be. And the owner, Mr. Tookes, waits on you himself at times. He makes sure everything is just the way you want it. The only thing I'm mad about, is that I lived just a few miles down the road for years and never knew this place and never knew this palace was there...until now. We will definitely be going back!
google avatar

James N.

Yelp
I would drive any amount of miles for some Took's! Literally the best BBQ ever! The spare ribs are insane and the people are so gracious. We drive from North Atlanta just for Took's!
google avatar

Rodney N.

Yelp
I was born in a little town in West TN called Humboldt. This place took me back in time. From the way the screen door (remember those!) slammed to the fact that the floor is not quite level, this place is as authentic as authentic can get. I do not like ribs that are cooked dry & then you put your own sauce at the table. This place cooks dry ribs & I loved them!! I believe that there are 3 levels of sauce so that should cover most peoples pallets. It started raining when I was there & that sound on that tin roof brought back so many good memories. The ribs basically come well done so if you are a rare meat aficionado, this is NOT your place. What kept me from 5 stars, do not get the sides. Frankly they were horrible LOL. If you like ribs/pulled pork with sweet, spicy sauce, this as close as you can get outside of S. Kakalaka...

Yelp
I went to Tookes, after I had taken a Buddy to The Mustard Seed BBQ in the Cascade area, and his comments was it was just as good. The Ribs cooked by the owned David Tookes where done right--I requested the Large end and could ownly eat half my order of the rib sanwich cause it was so fulling--fully cooked ribs moist and tasty with an option of sweet or spicy bbq sauce, both were good. David is the only one who can approve samples and he allowed me to try before you buy the rib tips and the ribs,he had sold out on the bbq chicken, his story of starting out on the street corner and working his was up to a store now 8yrs. strong, was a feel good story, nice guy Q that does'nt dissapoint. I re-warmed the last half of my order the next day and it was just as tasty, yummy...did it raise the level of The Mustard Seed, No! but the personality of the food was different ( if you cook you'll my drift,) would I go back?, definately!!!--David fm Tooksville Georgia is a stand up small BusinessMan who deserves community love and support all through the winter and summer...As per Kenneth G, his family help needs training, a smile and an attitude of gratitude...time will tell or $$$ will walk.

Yelp
This food was good, the fries and sweet tea were excellent. The bbq wasn't to my taste as I prefer my bbq spicy but they only had one type of bbq sauce so you don't have much choice in the matter. Their mac'n cheese was okay but clearly microwaved. I also didn't like that they didn't have a health inspection listed. If I came back it would be for the company and not the food. The service was nice and had a more family atmosphere.

LeKeisha B.

Yelp
I am usually not one to knock anyones restaurant because I to owned a restaurant but I was very disappointed with the catering I ordered. I ordered 10 whole chickens and the chickens were way too small. The chicken leg was do small after you bite it twice you were finished. The most disappointing part was the fact them I called the restaurant there was no apology or anything just a thats how we do it. But I ordered chicken from them a couple of weeks before and the chicken was bigger. Because of this I can no longer support this business.

Yelp
I am so in love with this place. I always get the smoked link sausage with bake beans and Mac n cheese. N dip the sausage in the BBQ. Feel like I am in haven. excellent customer service treatment you like family.

Thomas K.

Yelp
Best BBQ I've had. Okra and green beans are on point. Pulled pork is my go to. First time eating peach cobbler and they've got a good slice. Only complaint is they are only open 3 days a week. If your near by and hungry for good food stop by.

Yelp
This place was recommend to me, and I have to say it was the best recommendation in a long time. The ribs were meaty, the moist. The pull pork was delicious. and the mini sweet potato pie was great. The ice tea was just right.

Yelp
Great food . Had the chopped pork bbq plate ,and the sandwich had so much bbq it was falling out. Also great Cole slaw ,just the right amount of sweetness. Also peach cobbler . And friendly folks and plenty of food .

Yelp
Very consistent BBQ, ribs literally fall off the bone. Go for the 1/2 slab combo, mac n cheese and green beans - sauce on the "side." My personal favorite. Never fails. If you're traveling down 675 or 75 it's worth going on the off beaten path. Going down 42? Stop by. Good food. Limited seating and wait can be long "as with good food places" - call in your order and it will be ready in 10min.
google avatar

Sharonda R.

Yelp
I purchased the 1/2 slab combo, with Mac and cheese and potato salad. I was not pleased, the meat was fall off the bone when there was meat. The bones literally supported just the fat. I've never seen that much fat on ribs, it was disgusting. The Mac and cheese was sad, a dish so hard to mess up was missing the cheese. It was dry and flavor less. The potato salad was different, in a good way. Full of flavor and kind of sweet. I wouldn't recommend the ribs, I prefer more meat on my bones!!!!!
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Decent ribs. Tasty potato salad. The greens needed a bit more seasoning and a little longer in the pot. All together good, but we've had better. Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Craig L.

Yelp
I had the sliced pork sandwich and the smoked sausage. What a great little spot. The sausage was amazing. Everything was a bit greasy but that is where the flavor comes from so it is hard to complain. I would just not eat here too often. Great screened in porch/patio and an awesome produce stand next door. I will be back many times when I get into the area.

Deborah Y.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here for some good southern BBQ while driving through Georgia. It was excellent and the roll made the sandwich even better!!! Nice people. Don't let the looks fool you. They know the BBQ

Yelp
I've been looking for a BBQ place for years now ever since the owner of my preferred BBQ restaurant retired, and I must say that the food was extremely good. The ribs had a natural grilled taste (and didn't taste like lighter fluid like most rib joints). The meat fell off the bones and were seasoned to perfection. I had the baked beans and potato salad as my two sides, and both were very well made. The rib bones were a good size and had enough meat, and the food was fresh and hot (minus the potato salad of course). I ordered a rib plate that came with 4 rib bones, two sides and two slices of toast for $12.99, and it was worth every dime. I also purchased the peach cobbler which was very good, and the owner refused to let me pay until my order was made and he had the chance to show me the meal just in case I didn't like what I saw, and he even asked if everything looked okay before cashing me out. He was extremely friendly, and the restaurant reminds me of the old south where people would walk a few blocks down the road to a hole the wall to get the best BBQ. The place is very small, but the customer service (along with the food) is worth the trip. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for high quality BBQ on the south side of Atlanta.

Yelp
Had a strong hankerin for some good BBQ tonight. Not really any goo places for BBQ near ellenwood so I decided to try this little hole in the wall place on Hwy 42 in Rex called Tookes Country BBQ. Walked in and the door almost hit a family style table when a family was having dinner. Everyone in the place stopped to look at me. You know the scene in the movie when someone walks into a place and it gets real quiet. Yup, that what it was, I felt like I had walked into someones home interupting there dinner. I stepped to the counter of this tiny place and when the guy asked what I wanted I said I would need to find out what my wife wanted. I stepped out to call, came back in to place the order and was completely ignored. The guy actually left to go get his phone and charger out of his car, came in plugged it up and sat down. Wow, I politely left without a word. What a shame because the food looked and smelled really good.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I had a friend in from out of town (2/28/15) who is a huge fan of bbq and swears that the hole-in-the wall places are the best ones. So I went on restaurant.com and found this place. I called ahead to make sure they were honoring the rest.com certificates, and the guy who answered said they are not and have not been for some time now and that he wished they would remove him. My friend and I decided to go anyway. It was a Saturday. The place is as small as it looks from the outside. But we were still able to get a seat. I had the pulled pork platter w/ mac & cheese and baked beans. My friend had the smoked sausage with fried okra and baked beans. We both agreed that the baked beans were nothing special, but he really liked the okra. My mac and cheese was good and very cheesy, but a bit on the salty side. The pulled pork was very good, not too dry, and the sauce was excellent. The sauce that came with my friend's smoked sausage was even better. He said the smoked sausage itself was also very good. Service was relatively quick and with a smile. The owner came out and checked on us at one point which was a nice touch.

Stu M.

Yelp
Awesome BBQ! The rib meat fell right off the bone and the okra was so fresh and crisp. This place was amazing and we can't wait to eat here again.

Yelp
I used to go to Tookes Country BBQ around 5 years ago and they were great. But boy have they changed. I agree with Sharonda R. you're paying for fat and very little meat. One rib had nothing on it but fat. I believe that management is trying to cut corners and buy cheap cuts of meat. The potato salad and cole slaw was very good but I didn't go there for this. The BBQ Chicken was just ok. The BBQ sauce was mostly salt. If you're watching your salt intake please beware. I spend the rest of the day drinking water to compensate for all that salt I ate. We also bought two little potato pies. They are in 4 inch little foil tray and they look as if they were baked in a little girls Easy Bake Oven. The cost: $7 for both. They were not all that good either. For that price I could have bought a whole pie. The folks are still very friendly but their product has gone downhill fast. We ordered two meals a Chicken BBQ and Rib BBQ with two sides each (Potato and Cole Slaw Salad) and with those two baby pies came out to $32.69. Next time I will go across the street to Sarges Rib Shack and see how they are (I've never been there). I'll leave a review for them as well.
