The Best Dishes to Try at the Atlanta Chinatown Food Court in Chamblee, Georgia | Eater Atlanta

"Offers familiar Chinese-American takeout classics—salt-and-pepper calamari, Chinese spare ribs, wontons in chili oil, and generous fried-rice portions—while also serving regional dishes like mapo tofu for those seeking something with more Sichuan character." - Alex Leo-Guerra

Yelp
When you walk into the Chinatown food court, it's very easy to gravitate towards the right side of the hall, probably because of the fresh roasted meats on display. On the other side of the food court sits Top One Gourmet. It's clearly a more modest option, you can see right into the tiny kitchen, run by an Asian auntie and her husband and I'm guessing, son? Dark photographs line the wall next to it, showing off the food on offer in pictures. It seems as if Top One Gourmet is isolated from the rest of the stalls. I won't lie, I ended up trying Top One Gourmet out of pity. It ended up being my go-to place for a nice bowl of noodle soup within Chinatown. I would usually go and get a bowl of their fish and shrimp noodle soup and it was such a great dish on a brisk day. The portions were fantastic, the bowl could fit a lot of noodles, broth, seafood and vegetables. The individual components of the dish were mildly flavored, but the broth had some heat to it, so when you ate everything together it warmed up your taste buds. I think the funny thing about this place is that they always gave a giant side of rice, with a lemon, even if I had ordered noodles. For the noodle soup I'd order, it was great to either spoon the soup onto the rice, creating a bit of a "gravy" situation. Or, I would just dump the rice into everything and that was great too. I guess the moral of the story is that you should always give a restaurant a chance, especially if it's been around for a long time. From what I hear, it's been a staple of the community, so they're pretty old fashioned. They only accept cash so that seems to be a symptom. Don't be afraid to venture to the other side of the food court!

Yelp
I'm surprised this place has only one review and it's a one-star. This place isn't that bad. Top One Gourmet has been inside Atlanta Chinatown's food court forever. It's staffed by a sweet old Chinese lady who successfully suckered me in to buy dinner there a couple nights ago at the UYE (http://www.yelp.com/events/atlanta-buford-highway-uye-chinatown-food-court). Well, I was looking for a change from Chong Qing Hot Pot and Hong Kong BBQ anyway. Top One has a massive English menu posted all around the stall. If it's intimidating to you, you can ask the lady for her recommendations or better yet, take a look at the picture menu. They have pictures of almost every entree or at least the ones that are worth taking pictures of. Top One serves almost every common Cantonese dish imaginable and some Sichuan too. Cold dishes, appetizers, soups, meats, seafood, vegetables and tofu, hot pot, noodles (wet and dry), and more. Everything is inexpensive with most dishes costing less than $8 each. I ordered the mapo tofu and beef chow fun. These two dishes came with a heaping plateful of white rice and two bowls of hot and sour soup. The mapo tofu consists of chunks of tofu and red chili peppers in a thick bean-based sauce. This is an OK dish. The entree came out piping hot and I had to let the tofu sit for a few minutes before eating. The chili peppers were very spicy. I thought the sauce went great with the rice. I ordered the beef chow fun because I love beef chow fun and I also wanted to compare it against Hong Kong BBQ's excellent beef chow fun. Hong Kong BBQ is still the winner, but Top One's version is not bad either. This is naturally a flavorful dish and the noodles and spring onions were fresh and yummy. The beef was chewy (perhaps a little old), but I still enjoyed the dish. Like the other Chinatown food court restaurants, Top One is cash only. You get water and tea yourself with tiny styrofoam cups. You can order in or to go. I took some food home and on the way, my soup tipped over 180 degrees, but did not spill. Those cheap cups and lids actually work. If you order in, the old lady will find you and bring your food out to you. I'd order from here again.

Yelp
I used to love this place! Between 1995 and 1999 I visited Top One Gourmet like it was my religion! I worshiped at the counter, paid my dues and basked in the glow of my rewards, which usually was a huge serving of shrimp fried rice. I met my wife for the first time just a stones throw from here at my place of work and this quickly became a date spot for us. Broccoli fried rice in gravy was her favorite item (not on the menu) and the little elderly women who cooked it for us almost 2 decades ago was still in the kitchen on my latest visit. However, nothing about those great old memories tasted the same. I credit this place for the success of my early relationship with my wife. I'm a carnivore of epic T-REX levels and she can barely stand the sight of meat on a plate. It was one of the only places we could go on a date and both be fully satisfied with our choices back in the days when Atlanta was not the food scene it is today! While I want to give them 1 star for the under cooked wings and horrid burned pan tasting shrimp fried rice I trashed a few days ago (and by trashed I mean I gave it to Bill G who eats anything and even he didn't like it), I am going against all yelp rules and giving them 3 stars solely based on nostalgia. My heart simply can't give Top One Gourmet a harsh rating. Just know that once upon a time, this place was 'da Bomb... but not anymore. Not by a long shot! 2017/26

Yelp
Top One Gourmet is located in the Atlanta Chinatown's Food Court. And, it is well known as the cheapest food stall that people least. With all of the delicious foods in the same area, why choose to dine at and review Top One Gourmet? Well, there is one reason and one reason only: WONTONS IN CHILI OIL, my favorite dish. Yes, they are the only vendor that serves them and makes them well. While not the best I have ever had in my lifetime, they are pretty darn good. There is only one other stall that will serve this dish as a special request and charge almost $7 for it, and it was gag-inducing. I have tried other dishes and they are a little better than suburban take-away places and very oily. So, if you are a fan Wontons in Chili Oil, like me--- order them from Top One.

Yelp
The number 11 chicken is delicious! I got the number 11 here and soup from another place and that made one delicious meal!

Yelp
I have been going to this restaurant for years. Top One is truly an anchor of the Chinatown Mall food court. They have a huge menu, albeit a bit intimidating if you don't know what you want. They have added a photo menu in addition to the Chinese and English menus to ease the navigation for the novice. What I like the most about Top One is they are willing to cook you anything you can describe from the most common Americanized Chinese to the the most obscure and authentic. You can be sure you will be served large portion of whatever you get at a very reasonable price. A solid bang for the buck every time.

Yelp
Hands down, the worst tasting Chinese food I have EVER had. It had an odor to it that was so awful that I could never explain it. It was gross all the way around!

Yelp
Located in atlantas chinatown food court. This place has a large menu and the prices are incredibly cheap for what you get. I've been to this place maybe a dozen times and the quality is always top notch and consistent. You get alot for your money and some dishes can be split 2 ways. The food's simply delicious.
