When you walk into the Chinatown food court, it's very easy to gravitate towards the right side of the hall, probably because of the fresh roasted meats on display. On the other side of the food court sits Top One Gourmet. It's clearly a more modest option, you can see right into the tiny kitchen, run by an Asian auntie and her husband and I'm guessing, son? Dark photographs line the wall next to it, showing off the food on offer in pictures. It seems as if Top One Gourmet is isolated from the rest of the stalls.
I won't lie, I ended up trying Top One Gourmet out of pity. It ended up being my go-to place for a nice bowl of noodle soup within Chinatown. I would usually go and get a bowl of their fish and shrimp noodle soup and it was such a great dish on a brisk day. The portions were fantastic, the bowl could fit a lot of noodles, broth, seafood and vegetables. The individual components of the dish were mildly flavored, but the broth had some heat to it, so when you ate everything together it warmed up your taste buds. I think the funny thing about this place is that they always gave a giant side of rice, with a lemon, even if I had ordered noodles. For the noodle soup I'd order, it was great to either spoon the soup onto the rice, creating a bit of a "gravy" situation. Or, I would just dump the rice into everything and that was great too.
I guess the moral of the story is that you should always give a restaurant a chance, especially if it's been around for a long time. From what I hear, it's been a staple of the community, so they're pretty old fashioned. They only accept cash so that seems to be a symptom. Don't be afraid to venture to the other side of the food court!
