7 Curious Collections Hiding in Restaurants and Bars

"From the outside, Topolski might look like just another South Bank bar, but venture inside and you’ll find parts of what may be the most ambitious work by Polish artist Feliks Topolski, his “Memoir of the Century,” an epic chronicle of the key events and figures of the 1900s. Feliks Topolski was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1907. After completing studies at the Warsaw Academy of Art, he traveled across Europe and eventually settled in London in 1935. His skill as an artist was quickly recognized; he was soon designing costumes and sets, and during World War II Topolski was hired as an official war artist, even sketching the Nuremberg Trials. Throughout his life Topolski traveled extensively, visiting India, the Holy Land, China, and the United States, where he rubbed shoulders with many influential and famous faces of the 20th century, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Alec Guinness, and Laurence Olivier. His travels and meetings were documented in Topolski’s Chronicles, a collection of broadsheet-style drawings produced on cheap brown paper. The artist began work on Memoir of the Century in his railway arch studio in London in 1975, painting on 15-foot-tall hardboard panels. The mural depicts the key events and figures of the 20th century, all in a fluid and expressionist style—which can make it hard to identify some of the subjects! The piece took Topolski nine years to complete, and totaled 600 feet in length. Topolski donated his work to the U.K., resulting in the Topolski Century Gallery, situated in the same railway arch studio. Though initially free to visit, the gallery was poorly maintained and suffered damage from damp and defacement. Some £3 million was allocated to its refurbishment, leading to a reopening in 2009, but within 18 months the gallery had closed again due to poor visitor numbers and rising rents. Selected panels were removed to a private studio for conservation, and those remaining were incorporated into what is now the Topolski bar." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Lovely bar next to Waterloo. Drinks are well made with a decent selection, use the right glasses. Happy hour is a bit short at just 5-6 so it feels a bit pricey outside that hour although you can for a pint for £5 (2 during happy hour)

Amazing place! Have very cool vibe. You can get delicious drinks with a fresh bite to it. Central location but not in super busy street. Totally recommending! My fav drink - Poisoned apple 🍎 😋

Hosted a private event on Friday and they did a great job! Staff worked though the extensive cocktail orders quickly (I recommend the maple old fashioned) and they were polite and helpful. I would happily host there again.

Awesome place to grab drinks and light bites or pizza. Happy hour from 5-6pm on cocktails and cosy atmosphere.

Nice little bar close to the river and station. Not bad for a date bar, but also good for groups. Have a happy hour from 5-6

I don't usually write reviews but this one is worth mentioning. Don't go on weekends. We booked a table for a birthday party on Saturday, it took us 20 min to order Beers at the bar as the place is obviously under staffed and probably 90% of the staff still under training. Around 8.30pm we asked for a food menu. This was provided to us, but after only 5 minutes, when we proceeded to order, the waitress communicated the kitchen was closed. Since it was a birthday celebration and in the hope of saving the night, we then asked if we could bring food from outside, but the answer was a straight no. At that point we just left to find somewhere else to eat and hopefully a drink which didn't require standing at bar for 20 minutes. Would not recommend.

Google
Great place for drinks during the work week. The prices are decent, and interior decoration lends a really nice, industrial feel to the space. Also usually have old Japanese cartoons projected in the background, which is fun! We've never had trouble finding a space to sit or perch, as it's got a good balance to busyness. Wouldn't come here if you're looking for a boisterous Saturday night out (if you're looking to dance, this is not your place).

I like this space. For a Friday night after work drink it's surprisingly spacious. Happy hour offers a good selection of delicious cocktails. I only wish table service was available seeing as the bar staff are so quick to come to your table to remove empty glasses

Yelp
Drinks only review - Alas, here I go on yet another fucking useless Tinder date, what is life, why am I still here, will I die alone bla bla bla and we end up in Topolski. The place is cool, it has that urbany 'ok im a twat but i deal with it' vibe and its dark enough so that Tinder boy can stare at my tits without being so obvious and so that I can endure his presence in the dark and think he's far hotter and more interesting than he actually is. And the drinks are good. Service can be a tad slow and sweet Jesus every office party this side of Waterloo comes here, but the music is fun, kind of like a club, and it served me right cause then i got to shake my butt in front of the dude and now he cant stop calling me so

Yelp
Super moody kitsch. That what appears to be an 80s era Polish solidarity film adds tons to the soviet-esque atmosphere. There are no waiters, no. Order your drinks at the bar, and the Polish sausages, too. And better watch your step, it's dark in there. Cool place to relax after a work day. Give their quirky gin mixes a try.

Yelp
I have been meaning to review this place for months, as it's basically become the watering hole for our workplace as of late. You know that situation when you have a regular with work and get extremely bored, so of course when a new place opens you jump at the chance to change. And we're glad we jumped! Between 6-7pm is happy hour, 2 for 1 on a great range of drinks and cocktails. In particular, they have on-tap prosecco at 2 for £7. I will have a glass of that! In fact I will have two, because one is free HA They also do free nibbles - cheese and black pudding, ham and pickle and salmon with capers on various crispbreads. I think that's a nice free touch. The place inside is weird, it's always busy and there's no table service. But it's our regular. And I do love it!

Yelp
I spent a week visiting a Polish friend in London, we were close to south bank so we decided to give it a try. First off, there is very little that is Polish about this place, no Polish food or drink to be found. Only one beer on tap, and it was expensive. Music was loud we could not hear each other talk. The décor is acceptable, with art hanging from the ceilings, scaffolding holding fixtures in place. The seating is uncomfortable, old 1940's/50's chairs you'd find in a school or community centre. Do I want to visit this place again, not really.

Yelp
I don't know what to think of this place. It's a bar? It's a gallery? There's food I think? Its an old hangar with a metal skeletal frame built inside with art pieces hanging on for dear life at a neck craning slant while a movie projected on one side plays with unrelated music blasting at you...in the dark...Riiiiiiiight. Wanted one last drink after attending a street food pop up and this happened to be next door and less daunting as the nearby steak house or PingPong. They had infused spirits sitting in repurposed, slightly questionable looking, jars at the back of the bar. I asked what they had and the friendly bartender tried to explain through the blare of the dj. She had me at earl grey infused gin. Made me two G &T's with the infusion. Twas tasty. We were able to catch a spot at a table outside which made it bearable. But then a slightly rude staff member told us to get off the table as he had to clear them away at the end of the night as a rule. That's fine but how bout the usual apology not apology before that sentence buddy. "Sorry but," would have sufficed. Nie dziękuję

Yelp
Perfect for a quick after work drink, this dingy under-the-arches bar serves up good cheese and meat boards and have happy hour offers on prosecco, they also distill their own spirits.
