Best Drive-Thru Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"Only one of the popular Austin-born, now-national taco chain is a drive-thru, and that’s on Spicewood Springs Road. Takeout orders can be placed online." - Darcie Duttweiler

Torchy is in Austin fan, favorite, and for good reason. They have been immensely popular because of their interesting array of tacos, and fun names to go along with them. This particular location is nice, and has some nice outdoor seating along with a handful of inside tables too.It is near Mesa on Spicewood Springs, but you can only access it from the westbound lands of Spicewood Springs. There are a lot of trees out front so if you’re not looking, you could drive right past it.

Food came out fast. Great as always. This is one of the OG locations before they went nationwide. Good local spot.

Google
What a wonderful taco dive! The employees were so attentive. Margaritas on the rocks truly rocked! Loved the triple appetizer with the award winning queso (10 star), great guacamole and choice of salsa (Roja or tomatillo). The corn tortillas are possibly the best I’ve ever had. Taco fillings were very generous, wished for another tortilla. Causal and laid back, this place is a true gem.

I recently stopped by Torchy’s Tacos and decided to try The Democrat and The Republican—both were fantastic in their own ways! Overall, both tacos had a perfect balance of flavors, fresh ingredients, and a bit of that signature Torchy’s flair. Can’t wait to come back and explore more of the menu!

Such a pleasant experience. Sam took my order at the window and was very patient and polite. Being kind goes a long way. Colorful personality and the looks to go with it!!! My type of interaction for sure! 🥳😁

First, you have no idea what it meant to us to allow us to have our two small dogs in their stroller to sit on the awesome covered, shaded, cool patio for our meal. Next, TWO staff members went out of their way to ensure that we as vegetarians AND our first Torchy's experience since we first visited the original food truck back in 2016, felt included and valued as customers. Hannah, who ended up taking my order, spent so much time with me ensuring my picky family members had exactly what they would enjoy and allowed me to get small 2 oz cups for them to be able to just taste test the various sides and sauces I ordered. She shared what she felt we would enjoy and what maybe we should pass on given our lack of ability to handle the heat! She was beyond helpful, and made the slightly overwhelming experience, so pleasant! Ok now on to the food. The chips and queso were absolutely phenomenal. My usually picky father, asked me to refill his 2 oz cup four times! I tried a tiny taste of the diablo sauce that Hannah had given me on the side, and thank gosh I did, because it was WAY too hot and would have ruined the queso for my entire family. The rest of us could not stop eating it either! Amazing! Kudos Chef! Next, my father got a real beef fajita and ate it up entirely. My mother got a potato egg and cheese but wanted to try the fried avocado so she got that added to the taco. It fell out immediately of course because of how packed it was, but she ate it and enjoyed it all. My wife who has only been a vegetarian for a year and a half ordered the grande burrito with the cowboy style Beyond Beef. She agreed that the seared tips would have been better, but she did enjoy it! And lastly, I decided to get the Trailer Park taco sub fried avocado. I must say, after having the taco of my life back in 2016, I was expecting so much more, but it was totally lacking in flavor and the fried avocado just tasted like slightly crunchy mush. But that's ok, because the street corn I got for us made up for it and I could have made a meal of the queso, chips and street corn. In fact, with our leftover street corn, I mixed it at home with some store bought queso and dipped it in chips and it was perfection! Anyway, way to go! Even though my taco was less than outstanding, our overall experience was just wonderful! Keep doing what you're doing, but do please consider bringing in maybe one other meat alternative. Thank you! Michelle and family.

Best torchys in Austin. Old school the way it should be. Layla was so kind and cared about my order. She was really nice to the person in front of me too. Thanks!

Google
Great taco joint. This is the predecessor to other joints like Smoke Taco. They do specialty tacos. I got the “Republican” and the “HogFather”. Both were delicious and I was surprised to find that I liked the HogFather more. The staff was nice and the atmosphere is good. Nothing too fancy but it felt like it was an authentic place. Also the chips and guac/nacho cheese is delicious.

Yelp
I had a not great experience last time I ordered due to needing to cancel the order and still having the order delivered anyway. They had been nice enough to not charge me again since I had received a refund, so I thought I'd give some more business their way. We ordered some food for delivery today, including using my wife's free queso+chips for her birthday. The queso did not arrive with the order. I called and spoke to Cameron who told me that I would need to call DoorDash even though the order was placed through the Torchy's website. I called DoorDash to request a redelivery and they said I would need to call Torchy's as they were unable to redeliver since I ordered through Torchy's. I called Torchy's again and spoke to Cameron who said I would need to call DoorDash for redelivery. While he did offer a "credit" for next time I came in, at this point I'd decided I would not be eating at Torchy's again. The customer service has been spotty over the years at this and other locations, but I'd tried to give the benefit of the doubt. This is the last time we will be giving Torchy's our business. Obviously they'll be doing just fine without it, but hopefully this feedback will help so that future customers won't encounter this kind of situation. No real apology offered with any of my interactions, either, so it's clear that losing a customer is not much of a concern, which works out, I guess. Also, I tried submitting this feedback through the Torchy's website, but it would not allow me to submit it, which I'm assuming is because it was not going to be positive. Damn good tacos but damn poor service.

Yelp
The Belterra Torchys has slipped in quality of late, which is highly disappointing. We go there on a regular basis, enough to have the menu memorized by now to the extent that we await with a modicum of eagerness the new Taco of the Month for something different. Previously, it's always been more than decent quality and very innovative approaches (which is systemic for them, I suppose). And the prices are incredibly low for the quality and quantity. However. None of that held true for the last stop. What we got was lukewarm at best, and not up to their standards. MyTrailer Park had one large chunk or fried chicken that had to be pried apart to spread it over the tortilla. And it was tepid. My companion pronounced her Democrat 'awful' because of the temp and the flavor. She did, however, feel her frozen margarita was 'perfect'. Because of,our fondness for Torchys and this location, we're hoping this is a one-off, and we'll be back for a redemption tour. Hoping that they cure whatever is wrong back in the kitchen or the delivery system. Otherwise,we'll just stop at the bar only for the margaritas. Postscript: Torchys contacted me, and the manager refunded the entire cost of our meal. Way to go, Jason Redding. You proved out Torchys customer service. Thanks. We'll be back.

Yelp
Tanmay's scale: - Food quality: 4/5 - Service: 5/5 - Ambience: 2/5 - Cleanliness: 2/5 - Value for money: 3/5 - Vegetarian friendly: 3/5 - Parking: 5/5 This is the smallest torchys considering the indoor seating. There are hardly four tables. Our food was ready even before we got a table. They have plenty of outdoor seating but it was too cold to sit outside. We ordered queso, fried avocado, migas, and a trailer park. The tacos seemed a bit smaller than the other locations, but it was equally tasty.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
Gosh I love this place so much. Queso, whatever taco sounds good and a margarita hits the spot every time.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
I've come here many times before and love it always . The tacos are stuffed with many ingredients and I can taste all the flavors. This time I got the Baja Shrimp. The lime juice enhances all the flavors and the shrimp is mouth-watering. Lots of seating available. Sitting outside is great if the weather is nice!
google avatar

Adela M.

Yelp
Love the chicken fajitas tacos! And the queso and guacamole! Judy is always so helpful in the drive thru!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Tacos are so good. The service here is amazing! Nice little outside dining option too.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Food is really good, they have the best beans. They definitely cook with pride and they really try. The service is also really good. The interior also looks nice. Best bean and cheese taco for kids. Not spicy. They cook the beans perfect. -Review by a very pleased 7 YO
google avatar

Maria W.

Yelp
The migas taco is superior!! So yummy!! Ordering ahead is a huge time saver, and the staff are always friendly.
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
One of the best taco places in austin! They always have a great taco of the month and of course I have my favorites. The Republican and the Democrat but I think my all-time favorite is the trailer park tacos. Get 'em trashy! It comes with queso ("mmmm queso") Some places are a little tight to drive through and park but it's definitely worth checking out. They have chips and drinks but their handmade salsa is awesome! Pictured is the habanero and Pico de gallo.
google avatar

Loni M.

Yelp
Being new to Austin, I wanted to try some tex-mex that I hear so much about. Torchy's Tacos had great reviews by other yelpers so I thought I would try them out. I was immediately impressed that they had a drive thru but then immediately disappoint when the drive thru took over 30 mins to receive my food. That being said, all my annoyance of the long wait went out the door when I tried their tacos. Delicious! They have some interesting tacos on the menu. Some of the combination I've never seen before. I got The Democrat, Crossroads and trailer park. All were 10/10 in my books. Amazing flavor and good portions. I was full after 2. Will definitely eat here again but maybe order ahead next time.
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Excellent fast food tacos! When in Austin you must go to Torchy's! I don't believe that they make a bad taco... oh and make it Trashy!
google avatar

Steph R.

Yelp
Honestly not the biggest fan of Torchy's. The tacos are fine but I've definitely had better. Personally, I enjoy the breakfast tacos and anything with their brisket. Their queso and salsa are also delicious and maybe my favorite part.
google avatar

Rashaka B.

Yelp
I downloaded the app and used for the first time today. My order stated it would be ready at 3:25. I arrived at 3:20 and told them I was there. The female cashier said it will be ready in a few minis without even looking up the order. I stood and waited. No customers came to the store or drive through. My order was next in line. I saw the male cashier check and did nothing. At 3:25 I asked for a status check and I was told it is not supported to be ready yet. Just so happened that the manager walked in and reviewed the order. He immediately went behind the food prep counter and started my order. 5 minutes later the order was ready. The manager apologized multiple times. He gave a lame excuse about how shift changes can cause delays. Not something a customer wants to hear or experience. The male and female cashier were unbothered that an order could sit there waited to be completed with a customer waiting. When the male cashier handed me my food he did not make eye contact. So much for under promise and over deliver. This type of service kills restaurant. Not being customer centric is awful.

Yelp
Great drinks, great food, usually good service. It's a standard torchys. My favorites are the queso and fried avocado. The have a couple of vegetarian options. The sangria swirls is also amazing

Sophia G.

Yelp
My Migas taco had meat in it and I am deathly allergic. Thankfully I checked, because that's what I unfortunately always have to do. Do better! What a waste of time and money.
google avatar

Nelu R.

Yelp
Been coming here since high school (almost 10 years wowza) and NEVER not ONCE has it disappointed me. This is amazing, Torchy's, please don't ever change. Breakfast tacos always have a special place in my heart, no matter the time of day - specifically the migas and potato, egg, & cheese ones. Torchys' breakfast tacos just hit different. Fried avocado, baja shrimp, and the brushfire are always solid choices. The queso of course. Mmmmm. Nookies are amazing. Now I must depart and get some Torchy's.

Tyler M.

Yelp
Ordered a couple Trailer Park Trashy tacos and got a fried piece of something (plastic maybe??) in one of my tacos instead of chicken... Everything else in the order was fine. Maybe the chef accidentally dropped whatever that was into the fryer and I just got lucky. They gave me a refund on the order which was appreciated, but won't be eating at this location again.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Torchys is me and my sisters go to when figuring out late night dinners, my personal favorite being the Democrat and the green chile pork while they enjoyed their trailer parks (make them trashy). You go in expecting that the tacos will not fill you unless you get a few, trust me when I say, TWO tacos is all you need. I have trouble finishing even two with how full I feel. Overall, service is great, food is great, will continue coming here. Insta- @texasfoodadventurer

Yelp
First time at this location. Omg best ever! Talk about an Austin eatery. Lots of bc personality. And is this a flagship store?! ‍ Brought family member for first Torchy Taco visit. We ordered the fried avocado tacos but didn't understand the avocados would come out breaded. For someone that eats gluten-free this is the place! Went back in to order avocados with no breading and Spencer hooked us up! He wouldn't let us pay for the reorder either. Thank you for the great service, plentiful fresh food for a great price and an even amazing-er staff attitudes all around.

Angela Claire J.

Yelp
I've loved Torchy's for years, but now every time I order breakfast tacos the potatoes are undercooked. I mentioned this to the manager and he told me the corporate office made the decision to outsource the potatoes to a third party to save money instead of doing them in house. But what about the money lost when I have to find a new regular place to get my breakfast tacos?
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
Don't sleep on the salad with grilled chicken! It may have been the best salad I have ever had. The toppings were fresh, the dressing was the perfect amount of creaminess and full of flavor. I washed it down with their incredible queso and large portion of chips. My only regret is not saving room to actually try their tacos. Next time for sure! Service was friendly and fast, be sure to ask for salsas! There is plenty of outdoor seating and several tables inside as well.

Anne W.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been to this location because they used to get my order wrong 75% of the time. Still, I decided to try it out again today and it was a huge mistake! There was only one car in front of me but I sat in the drive through for about 25 minutes. If I wasn't stuck between cars I would've driven away much sooner. I actually wrote this review while I was in line. I also drafted an entire novel and aged 3 years. Never again.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
No parking. Businesses around location have signs that say they will tow Torchy's customers. Steel roof over seating, so no internet/cell reception. YES!!
google avatar

Bethany L.

Yelp
Call the cops because tacos this good should be illegal. I tried The Cougar, a special taco they were serving. AMAZING! 10/10 We also ordered the chips and poblano ranch salsa. Perfect as usual. Only complaint was that they didn't have margaritas at this location yet. But it's okay because the tacos were top notch. It's always a good day when I get to go to a Torchy's Tacos.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Really good tacos and a nice outdoor patio area. Red salsa had a good kick to go along with the chips. Tacos are bigger than we remember, and we probably ordered too many. The Wrangler, #4, and other breakfast tacos were all very good. The Scallywag, Democrat, and other varieties we tried were good as well. At $5/each, they're not cheap, but they've got good flavor.
google avatar

john j.

Yelp
A great spot for some local tacos. Everyone said GET the Queso and of course we did! Great flavor and many specialty tacos. My favorite was the low rider, we also tried the shrimp, brisket and of course the trailer park. All in all decent tacos with the clear winner being the taco of the month. The low rider, get it before it's gone.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
Dear Torchy's, please take care in your kitchen using all manners of safe food prep and handling. I was stricken with a nasty bout of poisoning after eating a pork taco from your kitchen.
google avatar

Desree W.

Yelp
So sorry, no photos this time. Trust me, Torchy's is the bomb! We had the Democrat and Beef fajita tacos on corn tortillas and the Queso and chips. SOOOO GOOD!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
I really liked the avocado taco. The plant based meat taco was no bueno - was over powered by the seasoning.
google avatar

Vaani S.

Yelp
The tacos here are good, if not better than any nearby place. I absolutely loved the mad cow taco. They have all these traditional Mexican flavors with a zing of their own. This location is rather small with about 5 tables so it gets a bit crowded sometimes. The service is fast but the order process was a bit long, the staff gets very confused when you have a bigger party. But the food makes up for all other flaws.
google avatar

Alina P.

Yelp
Sadly Torchy's has slowly declined in quality, as many of Austin once illustrious taco joints, going from outstanding and original to barely above gas station worthy. But at least they're making money. Right?
google avatar

Carroll R.

Yelp
Great tacos. Pricey but well worth it. I Wind up going there at least twice per week. Even the to go tacos are worth it. Packed perfectly.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Yes I do love me some Torchy's. The Chips and Queso is 2die4 and love the Breakfast Tacos but have had quite a b of problems lately with order correctness concerning Breakfast Tacos as well as the sauce/salsa that is ordered with them. I sadly stopped getting takeout from here for the last couple of months because of this. Love u Torchy's just had to see other taco shops and sow my wild oats, maybe we'll see each other around?
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
Steep prices but pretty good food. I recommend any of the tacos with shrimp, the shrimp are so plump and juicy!
google avatar

Alexandra S.

Yelp
This was the most disappointing Torchy's experience, and the worst location I have ever been to. This is a really small location, there is a drive-thru, but no margaritas. I understand because it's so small they can't have a full bar like other locations, but Torchy's is known for their margaritas. Put up a frozen margarita machine and call it a day. This has NOTHING to do with my poor review, just a disappointment. I went inside to order because the drive thru seemed to be taking forever - makes sense as it is made to order. I got inside and placed my order. There was a guy inside not wearing his mask properly, and no one who worked there said a thing to him. If people cannot follow the rules, they shouldn't be allowed in. While I waited for my food, another man came in waiting for his food and had his mask hanging under his nose as well - again, no one said anything. The tables inside are closed for eating, which makes sense because the place is so small inside. However, they were not keeping up with how many people were in there and it was impossible to keep 6 feet. And a staff member went to eat, they sat at the table area inside with their masks off, right next to everyone. Not social distancing at all. Their safety protocols need to be evaluated. As I waited and waited for my food, more and more people came in and ordered their food. Somehow I was the last person waiting for my food in there. Everyone else received their food before me. I think 6 cars went through the drive thru behind the car we were originally behind, and got their order before me. They do not have any priority to filling them. They just fill them and are all on top of each other trying to do so. Now the food. I ordered the fried avocado in a bowl and a chicken quesadilla. The fried avocado taco was not fried. They battered it and stuck it in the bowl raw. Raw gross breadcrumbs (picture attached). I mean seriously? My chicken quesadilla had no chicken in it and was overstuffed with half melted cheese. It was an inedible, greasy glob of cheese. Just beyond disgusting and disappointing. My boyfriend said his food was good tho - he had a trailer park, trash and a chicken fajita. I understand that they were super busy, but Torchy's is usually busy and they should be able to keep it together. Their efforts yesterday were beyond pathetic. There is no excuse for uncooked food and not maintaining health and safety guidelines. I would definitely suggest a different location if you want the true Torchy's experience.
google avatar

Lori B.

Yelp
Ordered a Wrangler no sauce. Got a Wrangler with sauce, no meat. Sent an email to company with my polite request for a refund. No sorry, no refund, no nothing. Waited a good while for this taco at drive through only to be disappointed, I get it, mistakes happen. A simple sorry would have been nice

Anne L.

Yelp
I am a big fan of Torchys, anyone who knows me can confirm. It's close to my house so I am there frequently. I've noticed a change in the taco shells I don't love. They used to give you two shells per taco which was too much so I always wasted one. Now they've switched to some other "corn" taco but it has a weird texture. Taste is good but forget carry out! It falls apart, cracks and I end up eating it with a fork. I've sent in complaints and never heard back. I hope they get this resolved soon since I've been scoping out other taco joints.
google avatar

Dale Wade D.

Yelp
I'm in Austin for work for the summer, and I'm already addicted to Torchys. Though at this location.....I'd it normal for the guy at the drive thru to hustle for tips? He was practically begging and it definitely makes me not want to go back to that location.
google avatar

Joy W.

Yelp
I debated what to star this. This is my usual Torchy's location and so I'm sort of use to the staff. Some are really pleasant while others can't be bothered. My son and I have come to the conclusion that they're just SO busy here that customer service isn't on their radar. Does that make it right though? I'm not sure. No one is out right rude but friendly is not their repertoire. I will say that the house is clean, and this location is constantly pushing out tacos. The food is consistently delicious and that's what we're ultimately here for right? They have monthly taco specials and a hidden menu. Between vegetarians and meat eaters in our house, it is awesome to find a restaurant where everyone is excited about the food.
google avatar

Terri J.

Yelp
Torchy's tacos. Even President Obama made an effort to stop here! Yummy! Their queso is some of the best I've had. Spicy and good. Their tacos are great - lots of options - even custom. Salsa is very good, too. My favorite feature about this particular location is the drive-thru. It makes for an easy stop to grab & take back to the office.
google avatar

Buu N.

Yelp
Quick, friendly service! No wonder this chain is so popular! Everything on the menu is good and their staff is super friendly. Every time I come here, I have to get the queso. Soooo good!
google avatar

Lasonya M.

Yelp
The Spicewood springs location ALWAYS does a great job ! The staff is always nice and helpful
google avatar

Sheila R.

Yelp
Ok so breakfast tacos are $3 a piece but can you please take some time to make sure that we can eat all the contents of our tacos. Gave you another chance but honestly for normal breakfast tacos there are much better places to go that make bigger tacos for the same price.
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
LOVE TORCHEYS, this place though (spice wood) needs some training in customer service. The drive thru worker that works nights is not friendly. I have experienced him many many times as I'm a regular, and he changes the way he talks to you based on your tip. Tonight I didn't leave him one as he was rude and he slammed the window on me twice.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
I love that this spot is more old school. Some of the newer locations have been very hit or miss over the past year. Especially since they are trying to go public. Shake shack take 2. Anyway this spot is small inside with most seating outside and awesome tacos.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
Wow everything is bigger in Texas...;) My friends and I came to TT right when they were opened which was 8am. We thought it'd be nice to have us some breakfast here before visiting Hamilton's Pool Reserve that morning :) Surprisingly it started getting busy within an hour. Didn't realize this place was that crackin' in the morning but who doesn't love tacos for breakfast?! My friends and I ordered about 2/3 tacos each. My fatass was debating about going hard and ordering 3 tacos for myself, but thank god I did not. When I saw how big the tacos ended being I was like oh god damn...good thing I only ordered 2 :P We all shared the Green Chile Queso & Chips was so freaking good. Especially when you dip your tacos in the dip...yasssss. I ended up getting the The Wrangler (Bfast taco) & The Democrat. The Wrangler had beef brisket while The Democrat had beef barbacoa. Both were so good and so filling. They really stack a lot of fixings in your tacos. Each taco is about $4-$5 each which is a bit on the pricey side but you definitely get your moneys worth. If I could eat a taco everyday I would. My tummy wouldn't let me but my mouth would! Definitely hands down a place to try when in Austin! :) I will be back!
google avatar

Helen P.

Yelp
Torchy's is always my first stop when I've been away from Austin. My "Wecome home!" meal - Fried avocado tacos!
google avatar

Henna A.

Yelp
WOW! I never had these before and wasn't sure what to expect when trying out for the first time. I was super hungry and looking for lunch. This popped up on my search for lunch joints in Austin. Incredible tacos, the Trailer Park Tacos are THE BEST! It has become a favorite now
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
Ordered through Lunch Drop. How can a taco restaurant tolerate bad/inferior/less than excellent corn tortillas? I awarded the third star because the chips and queso are - holy cow! - delicious! wonderful! unparalleled! - incredibly delicious. If the corn tortillas ever improve (even to average), then I'm a fan. Until then? I have better things to do with my money and my calories.
