Torchy’s Tacos Opens West Slaughter Lane Restaurant With Free Tacos | Eater Austin

"A rapidly expanding taco chain is opening its 14th location at 5900 West Slaughter Lane; the Escarpment Village restaurant is set to open Tuesday, November 13 and will host a sneak-peek party on Monday, November 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. offering free menu samples — from tacos and queso to margaritas — and occupies the space that formerly housed a Tex‑Mex restaurant." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Always pretty solid. The queso is excellent. This time around, the tacos were a tad cold, so the cheese wasn't melted. The beef fajita in the ranch hand taco was a little gristly and tough to chew. I've ordered these plenty, and this was an exception, but it was our experience this time around. Still a great place for tacos!!

Google
Torchy’s Tacos in Austin, TX, has come a long way from its original trailer, which was truly something special. The brick-and-mortar locations maintain the same bold flavors and creative taco combinations that made the brand famous. Standouts like The Democrat, The Wrangler, and the Fried Avocado taco are all delicious, generously sized, and packed with flavor. That said, the cleanliness of some locations could be improved, especially in dining areas and patios. Investing in better maintenance, sunshades, and more inviting outdoor seating could enhance the experience. Overall, the food remains excellent, and the menu offers great variety, making it a solid choice for taco lovers in Austin.

December 2024 I have tried every Damn Good Taco on the menu and all are very tasty with great flavor. This location is closest to my home and ordered a Chicken Fajita with the seasonal Shiner Holiday Cheer. The taco was very good as usual with its messy looks to it. Once rolled up all the ingredients go well with each other. It's not spicy at all unless you add a kick to it. The beer was actually good with a hint of what tasted like, cranberry. The place is always clean with a very bartender. The patio is a great place to sit at and dog friendly, but on this day was a bit too chilly. Upon leaving I did notice they serve sweet tea and took a taste and was actually good. I love it when they decorate for the holidays.

Queso is always perfectly spicy, bar drinks are delicious. Atmosphere is very chill even when it's busy. Kid friendly, and tons of wild tacos.

Google
I liked it! Went on a Wednesday night, so not very crowded, but i know that it's a much more popular place on the weekends. The people working were nice, but they didn't really interact, they just kind of stood there did whatever. The food was great, like always, however it took longer than I would have liked. I ordered simple bean and cheese tacos, yet somehow took 25 minutes? They were good though, so I won't complain.

Google
First time at Torchy's Tacos, food was amazing and service was great!! Definitely a go to when in Austin!!

Google
First time here… The service from the girl behind the bar on a very slow Sunday was egregious. I’m not one to write negative reviews but she was extremely rude to my group and I at the bar. She was short tempered, short answered, distracted, and very rushy for no reason. You have a better chance of getting better service from your Ex, than with Jalyn. Other than that, compliments to the rest of the crew/the cooks, food was good. 👍🏻

Chris S.

Google
A nice neighborhood haunt with full bar and a great patio. The food is generally consistent, however on my most recent visit the beef fajita taco was over sauced causing the tortilla to be impossible to eat by hand. Luckily they provide free forks at this establishment!

Yelp
I really like Torchy's. Here I am thinking about ordering takeout but memories of last week have me hesitating. I get takeout from there almost once a week. A while back I ordered a Trailer Park and the chicken didn't come close to allowing chicken in every bite. I called the restaurant and asked if I was supposed to get chicken in every bite. I sincerely wondered if my expectations were unreasonable. They said "yes, you should get chicken in every bite". Well, they continue to put small pieces of chicken in their Trailer Park tacos. They are always gracious and appreciative when I let them know but at this point it is getting to feel like a bit much. The inconsistency really stinks.

Yelp
Torchys is one of my favorite comfort food restaurants in Austin, can never go wrong with the chips and queso here! This Torchys location is quite open and has ample seating indoors. Service is quick and tacos are tasty as usual :)

Yelp
I've never dined in at Torchys, as a matter fact, I've only had torchy's tacos maybe two times and one of them was from a food truck at a wedding. I was hoping they had a drive through but there wasn't one . I figured, how long could it take. Ha! I went on in, the cashier was friendly enough, placed my order and asked for it to go. I was handed a buzzer and that was about it. I had no idea where to wait, where the drink station (it's around the corner you can't see it from the register) was or anything else about this place. I finally decided to find a table and sit down outside and wait. I didn't realize I was supposed to put the buzzer on a certain spot on the table and it would somehow alert the staff where I was I guess? After about 20 minutes, I went inside and asked a bartender if I needed to pick up my food from somewhere since it was to go and he said no, I could just wait there anywhere I'd like and the buzzer sends a signal to the kitchen. I opted to go back outside where I waited for another 15 and my buzzer started buzzing! I looked around and saw no one coming with food so I figured I would just give it a minute. I gave it five minutes and got up to look and see if maybe my food got placed on the rack for delivery drivers. Nope, no food there and now the table I was sitting at has been taken over by someone else. I find somewhere else to sit and put my buzzer on the table and probably for at least another 15 minutes. It continues to buzz and no food in site. Now I'm getting really annoyed because there's no one really to ask and I have no idea what to do here or where my food is. I go back inside and another five minutes of me, standing inside looking and feeling embarrassed and someone suddenly emerges from the kitchen with a bag of food to go. Seriously?! Why has my buzzer been going off for the last 20 minutes? The taco I got was good at least but I have waited less time for a full meal. I also ordered chips and queso and I was expecting cheese, but I'm not sure what was in it except it wasn't what I expected and way too much cilantro. So all that drama for one taco and a half order of chips and queso.

Yelp
The food is good. The service from app or order need improvement. If customer didnt request sauces then do not not not put sauce containers in bag. EVER.
google avatar

Yelp
Good service and solid food! If you need a quick bite I would recommend torchys, nothing special but good.

Yelp
I love Torchy's. This has been the closest one to me for about 6 years now. I'm very happy it's so close and still go often, but I do wish that their food and quality control thereof were closer to the standard of most other Torchy's that I've been to. The staff is nice and the restaurant location and cleanliness are great. Now they just need to make sure the food comes out hot and fast and with the right amount of toppings in line with franchise standards.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Very disappointed with our breakfast yesterday at this location. I had the Wrangler and my first bite was a crunchy potato as in raw, not crispy. After my 2nd bite of raw potatoes, I removed the rest from the taco. My friend also experienced the same with her taco. Her daughter said her chicken taco was slimy so she didn't finish it and never touched her 2nd taco. What happened to the good Torchy tacos?
google avatar

Alan G.

Yelp
Always love torchys. Chicken fajita and republican are both amazing and my go-to order. Stuffed with meat. Super friendly service.
google avatar

Craig C.

Yelp
We ordered 4 tacos for pick up and the food was fast tasty and prepared on time with a reasonable price the tacos were full had great flavor and had multiple sauces included. The food is always fresh delicious and a good pro
google avatar

Laurie Ann L.

Yelp
Stopped there last weekend to grab something to eat before shopping with my daughter. I like to try different things when I am there, with the exception of always getting the amazing queso! I have never ordered anything there that I did not like. Perfect for any time of day!
google avatar

Katie J.

Yelp
The lady who took our order left several items off our order. Then when we questioned why the items didn't arrive at our table, she proceeded to print out the incorrect receipt to what she rang up. Apparently she could only ring up one of each item but her serving counterpart couldn't bring out our entire order. All this over salsa, chips, and one taco. Ridiculous!

Zoey F.

Yelp
The service here is impeccable. Joe and Lilia are the best servers possible. My food always comes so fast and is always hot and delicious. I highly recommend this place for anyone lookin for a good family friendly, scrumptious dining experience. The food is always perfect and comes so quickly. This place is the best!!

Yelp
I'm so sorry I am an idiot I thought I pressed chuys, I love torchys keep it up guys!

Yelp
When I come visit my family in Austin Torchy's is always at the top of my list of places to eat!! The food is always so fresh and delicious and their queso and guacamole just might be my favorite. I've tried a few different tacos but the Trailer Park is my #1. And of course I get it "trashy" which means they remove the lettuce and add queso. 10/10 would recommend!! This location also has great outdoor seating options!

Yelp
This Torchy's quality has improved in the past 2 years. Not sure if it's post pandemic or because Taco Deli moved in down the street but it's now worth a spot in our regular rotation. Patio is a nice bonus and the kids can run around a bit. Margaritas are respectable as well.

Yelp
Let me preface this by saying that our family loves Torchy's. The single star in this review is because we have finally had it with this particular location and will think very carefully before giving it another try. It makes me sad and angry to write this, because this location could be fantastic. For several years now this location has not had what I consider to be particularly good service. The cashiers have never been very friendly, nor have they ever been very well trained. We've generally been willing to overlook this subpar service until this past week when we invited a friend to meet us for National Margarita Day. We arrived a bit ahead of our friend and were told that the bartender was backed up on drink orders so we should place our drink order at the bar (there was only one single bartender that evening, on National Margarita Day). Our friend arrived a little later and the cashier did not tell him this and accepted his drink order at the register. The staffer who brought our food to the table asked our friend if he was waiting on anything else and he told him about the drink he was waiting on. He continued to wait. And wait. And wait. Meanwhile we were finally done with our meal and he went to ask the cashier about his drink - the cashier said they would check on it. My husband went to the bar and bought the two of us a second round of drinks -- and still, our friend had not received his first drink! :-( At that point our friend was out of patience and asked to be refunded for the drink. Our whole evening was ruined by this terrible experience and we were embarrassed that we invited our friend to meet us at this location when there were so many other places we could have gone. I submitted this feedback online through Torchy's feedback form that same night but have yet to hear back. I would honestly like to be compensated for our terrible evening. Something really needs to change at this Torchy's location! Torchy's corporate, I hope you are reading this!

Yelp
I had lunch here with my daughter and we loved the grande burrito , it was very flavorful! the nice taller young lady at the counter was very sweet , amazing service! I think her name was sky.
google avatar

LeeAnn M.

Yelp
It's a got a nice little bar for a quick drink with a fast taco. The bar is the thing that stands out. It's separate from the rest of the eating area, so I don't have to hear every conversation in the place. Brooke and Sarah are fantastic! Busy or slow, they are on top of everything and keep the conversations flowing. We love to visit here before going shopping at HEB - we get damn good tacos w a refreshing drink and damn good service at the bar. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because it's still fast food - and they took the Mr Pink off the menu awhile back

Gwendolyn E.

Yelp
It was so good! Thank you to the escarpment location for providing a free meal to my dance team!
google avatar

Larry E.

Yelp
It's OK. It is nothing as good as the original truck (yes I am that old), but it is actually better than other Torchy's I have tried. The staff was a hoot, especially the cashier, and quite friendly. I had only a breakfast Chorizo and egg taco, but watched a lot of others being made. Spice level was really low, but I have learned, and as I will drop by again, I will get some jalapenos to add. One thing I did like was the tortilla was warm. This is where other Torchy's have failed me. The manager was really friendly also, and made a point of coming over to see me as we were introduced by the cashier. Is it one of my favorite places? No. I like more traditional border style, but it will do in a pinch. If you are a fan of Torchy's, you can get an item that is loosely referred to as the Trailer Trash. It is a Trailer, served trashy style. That will be my next visit. A bit up an update: I went in today and had a Trailer Park, Trash, on corn. It was OK, and had a decent flavor, but no bite and the tortilla was not warm. However, the staff was totally on point as I went in at the lunch rush, they were having computer problems, but still pressed on. I will continue to try it now and then, and I see 4 stars in the future. I will say, right now, that this is the best Torchy's I have eaten at in years.

Yelp
Love this place. Whenever we come to austin we always make sure to come here. For being a chain it is def worth going to at least once. The one we went too the guy who was running stuff out looked like the owner and was super awesome and greeting all the customers he was super chill. JKs pro tip: QUESO and chips is a MUST! And make sure you use the sauces that go for each taco they really make the tacos what they are
google avatar

Soosan S.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing service. Damn good tacos. Plus they have napkins! Chips possibly not homemade but somehow still crispy. I was a little sus at first, but they proved themselves. Water filter might be broken though.
google avatar

Alena D.

Yelp
We love torchys but this location was disappointing. Multiple people in our party mentioned the girl at the front taking orders was rude and the taco I received was not the one I ordered. Wr had a tired toddler and were in a hurry so we didn't ask for a replacement but we wont be going back to this location.

Debbie R.

Yelp
Extremely loud. We ordered the chicken fajita taco and the Republican taco. Republican dressing was nasty. Chicken fajita had something extremely hot on it so couldn't eat it. FYI tea is nasty-order something else to drink. Not a place we will return to.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Driving through the Austin area, I made sure to stop at a Torchys for their incredible salad. This location was no exception! Customer service was fast at the counter, and I received my food in a timely manner. The atmosphere is relaxed with music allowing for friendly conversations. You've got to make your way over here!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Torchy's and I love the fact that there's a Torchy's near my parents' house. My mom suggested coming here. It was a bit hard to find (we came in from Escarpment, not Slaughter). There are a lot of businesses and the parking lot wasn't well lit. It wasn't that busy when we walked in. We took a look at the menu, but I of course ended up ordering my usual because I'm such a creature of habit (the Wrangler and the chicken fajita taco). I love that you can order breakfast tacos any time of day or night. The Wrangler was a little bit more filling than the chicken fajita taco. I kind of wished that I had gotten two Wranglers instead. The wait seemed a little long for a to go order. It wasn't super busy that night either. But when the food came out, the young lady brought it to us and showed us everything before bagging it up. It was nice that we could verify the accuracy of the order while we were still in the restaurant. The tacos were damn good (as the saying goes). Torchy's never disappoints!
google avatar

Christina F.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had Torchy's on our last visit to Austin (different location), and all I remembered was their great Queso and chips. Found them again, in Buda. We got there at perfect time around 11am. Definitely, had to get the Queso and chips again! But tried a few different tacos. Never thought of a Jalapeno sausage in a taco (flour), but was really good. You have to get the first on menu with the breaded chicken, get it "Trashy" (with cheese sauce), the Barbacola taco and the Salmon taco. All were sooo good! They are different then you would get at a normal taco place. Will come back for more next trip out to Austin!
google avatar

Elaine G.

Yelp
Good ol' Torchy's. So glad there's a Torchy's even closer to home/school for me. There's not many other options except those that require you to get on the Mopac. Yeah, there's a Torchy's on William Canon, but it's so busy around that area, and this one is more relaxing to get to and is just right around the corner! Not to mention this one looks way cooler. Hillbilly queso is a must and great to share. My fave tacos are the democrat and the baja shrimp. Service was great as well. Line went by fast and queso was out within minutes to fill us up before we get our tacos. Also, when you dine in, they give you something like those buzzers that vibrate and light up when your food is ready to pick up. I thought I would have to pick up my food when it was ready but didn't see a pickup area. These were actually different. They bring the food right to you! Nice surprise. I actually haven't seen these before. Different from having a number displayed on your table.
google avatar

Ron U.

Yelp
Tacos are really hard to screw up so of course they're pretty good. The "vibe in this restaurant is hipster and awkward. I can't see coming here with friends for dinner so I'll consider this place a large taco truck and place orders to take out.
google avatar

Donnis M.

Yelp
You had one job. And you're only open for carry-out. And you missed part of the order. But you had it so packed and tied up it couldn't easily be checked. If you order carryout don't leave without checking your order. Please improve.
google avatar

Autumn D.

Yelp
I've been a Torchys regular for years. I've eaten numerous locations in the greater Austin area. This location was great!! The food was made right, fresh and delicious. The staff was very nice and got my phone order correct the first time. Allie the manager is great and seems to take pride in keeping her location running smooth. The circle c location is my new go to location!!! It was refreshing to have a location with good food done right.
google avatar

Scout W.

Yelp
The staff there all seemed to really enjoy what they do and were all great to talk to. The service was super quick as well. I also want to shout out the bartender Andrew Brown. He is great at keeping up conversation while working and making customers feel welcomed. He is very talented and really hot. Dinner and a view!!
google avatar

Cody D.

Yelp
Food is always fine, but tack on at least 20-30 minutes to whatever ETA you are given for your food. I've been to this location probably 15 times and it's truly incredible how behind they are, even when it's seemingly empty. In fact, I am writing this while waiting for an online order that said 25 minutes and I'm going on minute 45. I'd recommend you go down the street to Taco Deli instead if you're in any rush or expect food to be on time.
google avatar

Mikey J.

Yelp
TLDR: slow service, poor quality, mediocre food/drinks, actually makes you miss Santa Rita Honestly, this could probably be a 1-star review. I've been to the Slaughter Torchy's at least 4 times since it opened, and almost nothing has changed in my experience to improve my opinion of this location since my first visit. Although, the first visit was the worst, last night's wasn't much better. Where to start? How about with as soon as you walk in the door and get in line. I've never been here when the cashier process isn't painfully slow. It doesn't matter what you order, from a side of rice to a taco to a drink, the cashiers act like they've never looked at the menu or the cash register before. It's painful to experience, and the line moves at a slow crawl at best. I expected slow cashier service during my first visit, since the staff were probably learning the system. Last night was no better. Then you move over to the drink station. In 4 visits, the drink area has been a mess. With cup lids spread around, and spilled drinks everywhere. Last night, only one of the ice machines had ice when I was there. How do you run out of ice during a dinner rush? During my first visit, I ordered a beer. It was served to me FLAT and warm. Again, I figured it was just because of opening jitters, but I no longer order beer because of it. Now, the non-alcoholic drinks are a mess too? Then the service. During my first visit, it took over an hour to get food and even then our order was incorrect. Again, I chalked it up to opening jitters. Last night, the place was half-full, and it took over 30 minutes to get our food, and guess what? The order was still messed up. Ordered a egg/bacon burrito and the egg basically a brick with a piece of bacon fused in the middle. It looked like it'd been sitting under the heat lamp for the entire night. Either way, how does it take so long to make a taco? It's not like they have an incredibly varied menu. We're talking a dozen or so different tacos most sharing the same ingredients. With the slow service at the cashier, you'd think that would give the kitchen enough time to keep up? I've been to a bunch of the other Torchy's locations in town and this is BY FAR the worst one. From start to finish and like I said this really could be a one star review, but I still like their queso. Maybe with the closing of the 1st & El Paso location, they'll move some better kitchen and cashier staff over to help this location. I know I won't be back.
google avatar

Paola C.

Yelp
4th time I've had to wait between 20-40 minutes after my order was supposed to be done. I love torchys tacos and how conveniently close it is to my house but the service on this restaurant is by far slowest and poorest. Even in College Station where there's always long lines the service is quick and professional. The young teen staff members here are not attentive to the orders. I have to call or tell them multiple times to check my order. If I don't ask I stay waiting for my order. I shouldn't have to do their job for them. This doesn't only happen to me. I've witness others get upset waiting over 40 minutes for their online orders. They've even given other people their orders faster that came after me while I've waited for my online order inside. On top of being slow my order is ALWAYS wrong. They don't even bother to check if my order is correct or if I got the right salsas, if any. Either train your staff or get more mature staff that care about customer service and their jobs. Every time I come I am disappointed and it sucks because it was one of my favorite fast taco restaurants. Don't come here if you don't want to wait over 30 mins for your order. Sigh!

Kaia R.

Yelp
Ana was a great food runner. She was so sweet and always made sure we got what we needed. Food was amazing; my favorite was the queso.

T K.

Yelp
Went there to redeem 4 Burn It cards for bad service and the staff couldn't understand how to apply it to bill. Again, totally untrained staff ! How is this continued bad service allowed?
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
This Torchys is my favorite and a must visit whenever we are in S Austin to see our daughter. It's so popular, so sometimes we order ahead for takeout as home is just 2.5 miles away. The food is always consistent and excellent, and I always get an extra green Chile pork for breakfast. Cold or microwaved, it's wonderful. The management team of Allie, Joe, & Devin are so engaged to make sure your dining experience is perfect. Love this place, just wish they had a location in Charlotte, NC!

Ryan C.

Yelp
Never really had a bad experience. Food is always ready when they say and tastes great. Employees are nice and welcoming and haven't ever had a bad experience. I also like the layout and vibe of the restaurant so it feels both modern and homey. Overall good location.
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
Man I wanna like this place but it's like they are severely understaffed or lazy. It's a huge store, no matter when it's slammed with people or empty at 3 on a Monday there's never anyone to assist at the register. Then they have this little place the left when you walk in the door that says pick up here. Another sign says pick up here right next to it but no one is ever there either, and there isn't any food bags either, so like why are those signs even sitting there? I asked for poblano ranch when I called my order in. It wasn't in the bag. I asked for a half queso to go and the poblano ranch please. They bring out chips and queso. No poblano ranch. 3rd times the charm. Come on. I had one taco, one queso, and SAUCE. Your menu is limited, I should've have ask 3 times. Feeling a little spicy today, obvi.

Carson D.

Yelp
Dis shit is bussing out the god dam seams. The manager Alli is badass too. The bartenders are dope Queso is fire
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
This Torchy's is a joke. I ordered to-go in house. They give you a number assuming they'd call it, vibrate; or leave it a pick up area. But no. Unfortunately, I only got my order after following up 40 minutes later. And it was up on the counter sitting there for the past 20 minutes. What was the point of the number and ordering to-go if you're not going to call it? Or let people know how you'll get your order. Also, service people aren't obviously happy to be here. Friday night manager 12/17 is a bit of a joke. Wishing I didn't tip. Save yourself the trouble and don't come to this location!
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
WOW...where has Torchy's been all my life? First off...the Hillbilly Queso is AWESOME!!! I went with The Wrangler, Baja Shrimp, and the Roscoe. All three were delicious but my favorite of the three...the Baja Shrimp!!! Washed it all down with a Zoe Pale Lager that had great flavor.

Jetrina M.

Yelp
I was visiting my friend in Austin and came here for a quick dinner one night. I ordered the Crossroads taco and we got the queso to share. Taco was a bit pricier than what I'm used to in LA (~$5) but the portion was HUGE. I made two smaller tacos from my order. The queso tasted good as well, although I've never really had queso before but it was appetizing and had a kick to it. There were also drinks available and a full bar. I liked that there was both indoor and outdoor seating with a covered patio for the rain. There is a free parking lot outside the building.

Yelp
I've always received exemplary service when I've visited this location. The food speaks for itself and the staff goes the extra mile to make you feel at home..

Yelp
I only get three things from Torchy's anytime I go: Baja shrimp taco, migas taco and queso. I love all three of these. I think the migas taco is the best breakfast taco anywhere! I really like that you can get your tacos in a bowl. That option isn't listed on the store menu, but it's an option online and you can ask in store to have it served that way. The problems: - you can't get extra sauces when you order online - picking up orders can be a real mess - I wish they served their sauces on the taco or in a biodegradable container rather than on the side in a plastic cup. You get it this way even when you dining in...why not just put it on the taco? I hate the amount of plastic waste this generates.

Yelp
I absolutely love Torchys BUT the service here is hands down the worst. Literally nobody at the counter or bar or anywhere for a solid 10 minutes. Took forever to get my food and ppl were on their phones. Plus my order ended up being wrong. Definitely need a supervisor here. I forgot to mention I had to go into the kitchen with everybody on their phones to get them to work and help me and the other customers in line. Torchys response is to refund my lunch? Give me a break.

Yelp
Legit Austin style tacos. Better than Joe's downtown. The meat is on point. Full of flavor! I love the pork tacos. You only need two tacos unless you are super hungry. Awesome green sauce. They also have breakfast tacos so you can get tacos all day! Bonus!
