Montrose Restaurant One Fifth Mediterranean Could Open in a Permanent Location - Eater Houston

"Praise the queso gods: there’s finally a Torchy’s Tacos location in Houston’s West University neighborhood. Per a press release, the restaurant is set to officially open its doors in a space that formerly housed Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant at 5537 Weslayan Street on Wednesday, August 14." - Amy McCarthy

Google
While visiting Houston this week my taco addicted niece suggested Torchy's. I was not disappointed. The service was great. The manager, Kevin, greeted us and welcomed us to Houston and mentioned some favorites. I ordered the Trailer Park (Trashy) and the Green Chile Pork tacos. They were delicious. I also ordered a half order of Street Corn which was amazing. I will definitely visit this restaurant again when I return to Houston. Big thanks to Kevin for his hospitality.

Google
My favorite place to eat!! Recently had lunch at Wst U Houston location after driving for 7 hours, it was delicious!! Place was very clean. Thanks Miguel and McKayla for such a welcoming environment.

I ordered a veggie burrito without guacamole because I get bad migraines if I have it. The cashier went to the back to tell them not to put guacamole because it requested after I already paid for I didn't read carefully about it having guacamole but even though she told the cooks not to they put it in my food anyway. After two bites I got a bad headache. I had to travel 30 Minutes back to the store and even though the manager fixed the order it took an hour for me to get the correct order and I would've gotten a refund but I didn't want to wait 3 to 5 days for my money. Then I asked for a job because I thought I could be of help for the company and she told me I was fully staffed and that's fine but she didn't have to make a comment to another worker about how she thought I shouldn't have asked for a job not knowing the menu that well. Probably best I don't eat or work there.

Google
Kevin the manager is just exceptional. He provided me service even when the location was about closed. It's friendly service and I really enjoyed my time at this location. Thank you Kevin once again.

Google
Absolutely loved my experience at this specific Torchy’s Tacos location! Was greeted and taken care of with great southern hospitality by one of their best Employees, guy named Ken! However the “Crossroads” taco w/ brisket did taste slightly bland compared to other locations… Still will give this location a 5 Star honest review.

Google
The food is good here, however the customer service is horrible, no one greeting us nothing was done respectfully, the cashier! with the injured leg was rude didn't greet us with respect at all. The woman behind us he called her ma'am with us he just said when ever you're ready order here. Learn better customer service for all people.

Loved the tacos as usual - ended up getting a breakfast taco (which is available ALL DAYYYY). It was a slow Thursday afternoon, so pretty empty. Don't mind at all - I can get in and get out. Where the door is located is a bit weird honestly; there's a bar island and could not place where the register was. Weird - of course, now I'll always know, but positioning is a bit off. Anyways, I loved my taco - I'm used to chomping on a lot of tortilla as I come to the end, but surprise! 🥚s were the last thing left. That's ALWAYS a win. The cashier honestly seemed a bit annoyed. I came in, and he needed to work. That was weird a bit. The layout is pretty sweet, though, and PLENTY seating.

Google
I went on my lunch break and the service was fast. I asked for a suggestion because I've never been but wasn't given one. I ended choosing the crossroads and fajita taco. The crossroads was good and I would get it again but the fajita taco.. absolutely not. I was surprised that wasn't the better tasting one. I prefer my tacos HOT in temperature so having unheated tacos wasn't my fav thing. I was going to get a margarita but I didn't like the price for the size so I skipped that. I feel like it's an overpriced place but worth a try

Yelp
I have no choice, but to bask in my own glory when I stumble across gems of my own volition/impulsivity. After a drawn out trip at Ross I was ready to satiate my hunger with something tasty. Came to Torchys because of its proximity and boyyyyy let me tell you....First off round of applause goes to this location in particular (because I went to another Torchys that didn't deliver as) for going above and beyond and having the cutest little setup. It has a plenty of parking, a nice open concept with an actual bar (yes, I said bar), regular seating accompanied with some booth seating, and lots of windows. Service was super friendly, efficient, and attentive which surprised me because I don't normally experience that at takeout spots, but boy was I really impressed. Everything that touched my mouth was flames. The queso makes you want to fan yourself from excitement, but the real star of the show was REPUBLICAN TACO! Interesting choice of name for a taco, but fire nonetheless! 5/5 experience will be returning (possibly next week, ha)!

Yelp
3.5 stars. Food good & fresh. They just honestly need to hire more staff. No main person working the bar. The bartender went back & forth from the bar to the register where the line stayed long. He was unable to fully attend to the bar to assist bring the line down. If they hire more staff I'm pretty sure this will assist with a smoother flow for the business.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Hanging out with family and enjoying the awesome vibes.

Yelp
my fiancé is obsessed with this place. I have other opinions, not necessarily negative but I don't view this place as perfection. The vibes of this place are weird, they're trying to combine too many things into one place. We sat at the bar to eat and drink one night with friends. The bartender acted like this was an anomaly. It doesn't fit a bar, it doesn't fit a mexican restaurant, it doesn't fit a build your own. It's just ANOTHER fast casual taco place. With that being said, the hillbilly queso is one thing I like a lot. It's delicious and has some complexity. As for the tacos, I've tried a few and they're okay. The elote is very americanized. It's a good place if you're grabbing a quick lunch. If you're looking to do literally anything else, probably not.

carmell t.

Yelp
That was the nastiest taco I've ever tried and the nastiest tacos you'll ever try. If you want your appetite to be ruined come here to eat. And if they recommend you something do NOT go for it.

Yelp
We drove to downton HTX to check out Memorial Park. We couldnt figure out which entrance to go for easy access to the food court. We ended up driving around and saw Torchy's and ended up dining in this establishment. It was our first time and honestly, I couldn't decide so I ended up with two orders. I had the Torchys Trashy chicken and Shrimp Taco, there were additional order for party of 6 ended up paying $112 including chips and guacamole. It was delicious. We will definitely be dining back closer to our area. Bike and carmeets is the best time to go If you haven't tried Torchy's, I recommend for you to try it

Yelp
There were flies and gnats everywhere. I'm sure we ate some. Service was fast but those gnats.

Yelp
So, I've been told several times by several friends that I need to visit Torchy's. I've been twice now, and each time I've tried something different, and each time I feel like the food is medicore. I got chips and queso which was pretty good, but not wow-ing. Next, I got the shrimp taco and trailer park taco. They were alright. Neither were fantastic, lacked flavor and were just fine. Next time I am in Texas, I will likely go elsewhere. Oh, before I go, I have to say, the staff was fantastic and so was the overall service.

Yelp
I was on a late night Michael's run and saw torchys across the parking lot, decided to try. The restaurant is super modern and trendy inside. Seems like a great place for a first date. I tried the steak fajita taco and the Baja salmon taco. We took a little buzzer and went to choose our seating, since some wonderful fall weather has been hitting Houston we decided to sit outside. The outdoor seating area is mediocre tbh. A lot of the seats were dirty and the lighting was sparing, I felt like I was eating in the dark. The food came quickly. I LOVED the Baja salmon, it was so creamy with salmon and cotija cheese but the creaminess was cut with the acidity from the pickled onions. I'd skip the steak fajita next time though, it was super over salted. The chips were also super salty to an unpleasant degree. I'd come back again for the cheap prices but some of their menu items are definitely a bit salty.

Yelp
This restaurant and location is one of my favorites. Their food is great and highly customizable which allows for all diet types. They offer all their tacos "in a bowl" if you're low carb. They also have many vegetarian options. My favorite taco is on their "secret menu" and is called the Ace of Spades with brisket, jalapeño sausage, and a fried egg. It's amazing. Service is good and ambiance is casual taco shop vibe.

Yelp
This chain was recommended to me by a friend who lived in Texas for a year and it was so good! I got the Baja shrimp and the special one of the day which was the pulled pork. Pulled pork was not bad but definitely the baja shrimp is the way to go. So tasty, the shrimp is fried but it's not too oily/greasy. Though it also wasn't super crispy (which I actually like when it's super crispy!). Definitely will get again if I ever come back to Texas.

Yelp
Before Velvet Taco, Torchy's use to be my go-to. I decided to give it a try after a long while, and now I know for sure I won't be back. No food experience should start with "This is it...?" when you open your bag. There was barely any filling in each taco and it all looked like indistinguishable mush in the foil. With all of the unique combos and options available, the flavors were so disappointing and meh. They also forgot several add-ons to our tacos. Torchy's used to be THE cool new taco place, but now they feel like a mediocre chain compared to far better taco joints in Houston.

Yelp
Shrimp tacos and queso didn't disappoint! Quick service and great food.

Neil K.

Yelp
Do not go; terrible ambiance, service, and don't know about the food because never got it. While it has always been slow, tonight was the last straw. Ordered a salad and a burrito in a bowl to go. Not complicated orders. Restaurant not busy. Maybe 15 people. Food never came. Had to leave after 30 minutes to get daughter from event.
google avatar

Shawna W.

Yelp
Went after school with my kids. Service was fast and lots of room to sit. Food was ok. I enjoy velvet taco so much more. Good place to come for a quick bite but much better tacos in Houston.
google avatar

Arie M.

Yelp
The service is 5 star - very friendly staff answering questions about the tacos and the manager was even going around asking people who things were. Top notch. The tacos are also quite tasty but maybe this is because we've been spoiled in Houston with so many small and cheaper taco stands, as these are not exactly cheap tacos (i think you pay about $5 on average per taco), the tacos are a little on the small side and they are a little stingy with the meat on them. Then again, with these fancier taco places, you get the beautiful clean restaurant and the nice atmosphere so maybe it's unfair to compare them with a hole in the wall taco place.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended as a place to check out while in town by more than 1 person and it did not disappoint. We ended up stopping by twice while in town for a week. Quick and easy.... you order, pay and grab a seat. Everything is brought to your table. You have the choice of flour or corn tortillas and all Tacos will run between $4/$5 and change. On the first visit 1/2 order of Guac & Chips Baja shrimp (on corn tortilla), fried shrimp Brushfire, which is jerk chicken (no sour cream) Mr. Orange (on corn tortilla), blackened salmon On the second visit 1/2 order Green Chile Queso & Chips Trailer Park, fried chicken Chicken Fajita, marinated grilled chicken Brushfire, jerk chicken For drinks I tried the Sangria Swirl (frozen) and the Sucker Punch. Everything was "Damn Good" the heat/spice in the Guac and the jerk chicken was nice and I enjoyed that the chicken wasn't dry. The shrimp was well seasoned and plump, not over cooked. The chicken fajita was juicy, tender, and flavorful. I even enjoyed the queso I'm generally not a fan of any, but Torchy's was cool, I like the addition of the Guac. My preference will always be Guac over queso, but that's just me. All tacos came with a healthy amount of protein even the blackened salmon was a nice size. Of all the tacos, while tasty the least memorable for me was the "Trailer Park". The drinks were equally good and they offer specials on the weekend and HH during the week. Just A Note: I went to the one on Weslayan St (several ppl said this is their preferred location) Like many establishments they have a rewards program and app. My suggestion is download it because you will be back.

Yelp
Great location for a Torchy's! It's so close to where I live, and actually has easy parking because it's located in a big parking lot that shares a complex with other big stores. If you're anything like me, I definitely choose a place to eat based on easy access and easy parking. There is plenty of seating inside. Perfect casual place to catch up with a friend or grab a quick bite. I typically order to-go from Torchy's, but I dined in this time with my friend. Service was really quick and everyone was very friendly. This is my new favorite Torchy's location to go to. My favorite taco to get from here is "The Democrat." If you like barbacoa and avocado, then this taco is perfect. I usually just get 2 and that fills me up completely. You also can't forget to get the queso and chips! Their queso is definitely a must to either share with a friend (or even have all to yourself hehe).

Yelp
Delicious tacos in Houston. Stopped in right before closing and had a great experience.

Yelp
First time at Torchy's and won't be the last. It was supposed to be a take out order but we ended up eating at the bar. While the menu isn't too extensive, I made my own bowl which ended up being really good. Plus, the sauces were a nice touch and the staff was so kind and helpful.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
4 out of 5 of us got tacos, the other did baby formula. My wife got a fried avocado bowl with fried shrimp added for a small upcharge. We were advised of the "secret menu" and i tried a Matador with beef and jalapeno....this one was only 3 stars for me. I also demolished the taco of the month, an Indian fusion inspired taco with lots of spices, mango, mint, cilantro and I think a piece of fried chicken strip....5 stars on this one.
google avatar

Ted R.

Yelp
Kind of odd one can't order a breakfast taco until 10am. Rather disappointing Too bad. They've got all the resources.
google avatar

Swap S.

Yelp
Queso: great. Tacos: Mediocre, but maybe I'm more of a "classic done well" vs " innovative and crazy concoction" person when it comes to tacos. They definitely had an interesting and imaginative selection. I only tried two- hillbilly and democrat. Expected more from the democrat since it seemed to be a pretty basic iteration. Not impressed. The hillbilly was like beverly hills meets ozarks and was doing too much. The sauce that came with it was pretty good though. May go back to try a few other tacos, but for now, will definitely go back for queso.

Yelp
I have been to Torchy's Taco several times, and all have been excellent experiences. The establishment is in a location where there is tons of parking so that is never a problem. The establishment is large with tons of seating across the restaurant.. it's good to come with a group friends or if you want some alone time. There is a bar there also! I ordered to go, the service was not bad, and my food came out in a timely manner so that was a okay! So I ordered two Baja Shrimps "fried", chicken fajitas, and a brisket taco, as well as chips and Queso The tacos where definitely on point, definitely try the Baja shrimp if you ever decide to take a visit here. The chips and Queso where also really good !!!! I am definitely coming back here when I get a chance. You should as well.

Yelp
the best taco chain in the nation, hands down! full of flavors and souther hospitality with the service, i will always go to torchys when i'm in the are. i got myself two tacos - the Trailer Park and the Democrat all with Diablo sauce. trust me, this place cannot do wrong! everyone is friendly and they know good tacos! there is outside seating and a wide array of drinks as well. there is parking too and the staff is awesome

Htx Delivery D.

Yelp
Unfazed by a house full of late night drunk patrons.. this location has some of the friendliest and most welcoming staff I've ever come across. Not sure what management is feeding their workforce but it's working.

Jay S.

Yelp
Service was atrocious, it was a little busy but we waited over 40 minutes and still no food. People who came after us got food and finished eating and still no food. Same thing happened to multiple tables and most had to cancel their orders or get it to go. Also when we cancelled the order for a refund I noticed the refund didn't include the tip. I won't be back.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday evening. Not much of a crowd at first but it later grew. The tacos are incredible! I had the trailer park and the jerk chicken one and it was so delicious. Two tacos and queso dip and I was full as a tick. I also had the sucker punch. Fruit but delicious. Mary was our waitress at the bar area and she was very personal and made our visit their very nice. She will definitely see us again there! I reccomend this location!

Julie S.

Yelp
Went here for the first time for lunch on a Friday. Wasn't too crowded. Plenty of parking. Walked right up to the counter and ordered. It was clean with a moderate noise level. Good for conversation. I had a Mr. Orange and my lunch buddy had shrimp tacos. Tacos were pretty good. I liked that the corn tortillas didn't fall apart. No forks though.... I had to remove a star. All in all it was a solid taco joint.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
I was not expecting much but they sure did exceed my expectations! The salmon tacos where . Can't wait to go back to Houston, I need more.
google avatar

Max K.

Yelp
I loved it here! Great Tex Mex food as well as really friendly service. The cashier really took the time to fully explain what his favorites were and why! Everything was delicious and pretty reasonable! Highly recommend the queso!

Ethan F.

Yelp
Really good food. My personal favorite is the Tipsy Chick, with the Baja Shrimp coming in second. Their servers were also very nice, and their cashier recommended some really good tacos from the secret menu. The overall ambience was great, with a bar in the restaurant and a nice interior

Mary D.

Yelp
Best in Texas. Fast friendly service, very clean and spacious. I'm not from Texas and I look forward to going to Torchys when I'm in town

Kevin J.

Yelp
Love Torchy's. The burritos are huge and amazing. Wide variety of tacos. Decent margaritas and the Mexican street corn and guacamole really rounds out the meal. Quiet and plenty of tables. Staff is fast and efficient.
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
Grate food, even though the service was slow. Understandably slow because of shortage on staff. Nice place to chill.
google avatar

Yelp
Heard so much about this chain of taco joints from my friend who lives kinda close to here. Fortunately he and I did not let the ratings discourage us from coming here. He mentioned it's fairly new so likely still working things out. Tacos in Texas mean two things usually: 1. Breakfast tacos are always and I mean ALWAYS an option. 2. Everything is bigger in Texas, tacos included. Green pork chile and the full monk breakfast tacos were my order. Paired with a margarita on rocks and this was a satisfying meal. Tacos were large and loved the green sauce that comes with it. Full Monk is a prime breakfast taco with the well-seasoned fillings and the green pork chile was tender and juicy. The margarita was better than I thought; of course paired with tacos, is there any such thing as a bad margarita? Well, maybe one w/o tequila! While there were some hiccups (long wait for margarita and tacos), I'm now on the Torchy's wagon enjoying the ride!

Yelp
I am so sad that this location has such a low rating! It definitely doesn't deserve it. I know it may have had a rough start when it first opened but it is not that way anymore! This review is based on my curbside experience today in the midst of this strange time (COVID-19). It's also Taco Tuesday AND Cinco de Mayo!!! WHAT?!?! I ordered the Crossroads (brisket) family pack & it was plenty for my husband & I & our 3 year old twins. It came with tortillas, chips, salsa, rice & beans, & all the accompaniments (cheese, cilantro, onions, jalapeños, avocado). It was all absolutely delicious!!! I usually get the Democrat (barbacoa) which I also love, but they didn't have it as they are operating under a limited menu for the time being. Don't be put off by the low rating - it's not a fair representation of their current operations. Stay safe everyone!
google avatar

Lavette N.

Yelp
Always down for a tasty taco! Always kind service recieved, yummy tacos, and refreshing beverages. The vibes are grand! Try them out, my favorite taco is the migas with queso cheese!
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
Well who doesn't love Torchy's food!? We walked in to place a to go order which I don't know if they lost....but 40 mins later after my husband went to inquire (finally ), we left with our food. It kind of defeated the purpose of not cooking on a week night, but they did give us $15 in vouchers. The bar was actually nice to sit at and wait and conversation. Will I go back? Well, yes! It's Torchy's Probably just a bad night.
google avatar

Lili S.

Yelp
Delicious tacos, reasonable service wait time. Very socially distanced at the time I went (4PM on Monday). Sanitizing bottle and paper towels were available to use. Staff wears masks. Very clean restaurant. Baja shrimp taco made my nose run so if you don't like spicy foods, don't order this
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
This is the worst Torchy's location I've been to. The queso was cold, and the MoFaux and Trailer Park tacos were way too salty. The Trailer Park is normally my favorite taco here, and I was so disappointed when the excess salt ruined the flavor of the chicken. It seemed like it was almost 4x the normal amount of salt. The only positive aspect of my experience here was the Fried Avocado taco - absolutely delicious. You're better off going to a different Torchy's location, or if you're here, just get the Fried Avocado.

Hans W.

Yelp
34 minutes to receive 1 taco ordered at 7:13pm on a Thursday - required my inquiry for it to appear. Unclear if anyone would have ever been resolved had I not asked and also had receipt w time stamp. Was informed there were many tickets before mine. Sounds like issues w labor shortages? idk - but I was offered only a mild explanation. Are their employees quiet quitting? They must have many more patrons than workers so I guess the margins will remain fat. The taco was very tasty just not that tasty. I work in customer service myself so I am patient and was polite to staff, but management needs to get a clue about this stuff. I will stick to the utterly innumerable tex-mex and taco shops around for the foreseeable future.
google avatar

Barret L.

Yelp
New Torchy's location in the West U. neighborhood of Houston. They did a great job with this location! The look is clean and spacious. There is ample seating both indoors and outdoors. I always get myself in trouble at Torchy's because I end up ordering more than I can eat. You have to start of with queso (because duh), which is zesty and filling - particularly because their queso traditionally comes with guacamole inside (something my fellow diners were horrified to discover but I found delicious). Then you order the tacos individually and you think, of course I'm going to need more than one, I'll just get two. You might also be interested in a side or two. But when the main course finally arrives (which takes a good 15 min or so), you realize that these tacos are LOADED and can barely finish what you've ordered. Better than going hungry any day! The flavors are really good. I tried The Tipsy Chick for the first time and LOVED it. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Torchy's is pretty darn good would be my short review... clean and spacious. Tacos can be a bit spicy so just know that going in.. flavors are good and priced fairly. Would we go back? Yes.
google avatar

Nathan P.

Yelp
I was in the area and didn't know where to go. This was a great spot for drinks and tacos. Their tacos were pretty good! I got their shrimp and trailer park tacos and felt full after. I recommend ordering 2-3 tacos to feel satisfied. Their chips and guac tasted stale but that's my only complaint.

hilary b.

Yelp
Slow!!! Took forever to get 1 taco! The lady at the front was short and didn't listen well and messed up the order initially too.
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
I ordered the first taco on the menu and the Baja shrimp, both were delicious but I would order the Baja Shrimp without onions next time.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Really surprised with such low rating.. This is the closest Torchy's near my house so I always come here for my to-go orders. I've never had a bad experiences and my orders are always on point! Curbside made sure my order was all there and gave me so much sauce!! Yummm

Yelp
I honestly don't knkw why this torchys has such a low rating. This was my first torchys since moving to texas and i decided to treat myself after a tough day. I tried the fried avocado taco and the crossroads taco. I also ordered a margarita on the rocks because why not. I hemmed and hawed about 2 or 3 tacos while i waited but ultimately 2 was an appropriate amount because they are super large and filling. The beef brisket in the crossroads taco was one of the best types of cow i've ever eaten. I could eat a bowl of it. The warned me that the pickled jalepenos were spicy but i didnt think so at all. The fried avocado taco was delicious too, its an awesome veggie option. Both the crema and salsa they came with were delicious, the crema on the brisket was too die for. I will def be back but im still not understanding why this location has such a low rating compared to the other torchys!!
