I first had Torchy's in the Dallas area about 8 years ago. I was on a business trip there for 4 days. Ate at Torchy's three times in those 4 days. When I moved to Florida, I checked to see if there was a Torchy's. There wasn't. But finally, finally, one came to St. Pete. I was super excited when I found out. But, St. Pete is about an hour away and I hadn't had a chance to go, until last Friday. Wife and I were at Indian Rocks Beach, an awesome beach if you are in the area. On the way home, she said tacos sounded good, we were in St. Pete, and I checked the map. Torchy's was 1 mile away. It was meant to be, plus I got to introduce my wife to Torchy's, my favorite non-Mexican taco. The staff there is super friendly, just like Texas. But would the food be as good. Well, walking in, the location had a familiar feel to it. That was a good start. The menu had just changed, but I was up for trying some new amazing flavors. The most popular taco is the democrat. I tried that. The Republican sounded really good as well. And for kicks, I got the Tipsy Chick. Who could resist bourbon, bacon sauce? Well, the democrat was good, but the brisket and grilled corn relish of the Republican, oh my goodness, heaven. I ordered the tipsy chick after the other two tacos, and it was closing time. I don't think the season on the chicken was the normal, it was pretty bland, but everything else, off the charts. Wife love the chicken fajita taco. she liked the steak fajita taco, but the meat was a bit fatty. That was a small complaint as she was using the last bit of the tortilla to soak up the sauce and last bit of veggies. Overall, this place was just as good as I remembered, which is saying a lot. The vagabond, one of their tacos of the month, last seen in March, is my favorite, but that republican taco with the brisket, AWESOME. You can put any of the meats with any of the tacos, but whatever you do, brisket is a must try. Torchy's is not a Mexican taco like I would get in San Diego or Tijuana. It isn't a southwest taco like you would expect from a Texas based restaurant. No, when you think of Torchy's, think Master Chef and Gordon Ramsey is asking for an elevated taco. That is what this place is, King of the Elevated Taco. Bold, amazing flavors, friendly staff who seem to really like working there, and a cool factor most fast casuals only wish they could have. Give Torchy's a try, then come back here and thank me.
