The Best Hotels in Porto, Portugal

"Best hotel in Porto for design lovers Breakfast here isn’t just breakfast; it’s proof of how brilliant Portuguese design is right now. Elegantly tapered knives and forks, jade-green ceramics holding quince jelly, a chalky-white espresso cup indented with abstract patterns—all handcrafted by family-run ateliers. The rest of the hotel takes a similar outlook. In the plant-lined entrance, clay faces grimace and grin down at guests—gods on one side, earthly mortals on the other—the work of sculptor João Pedro Rodrigues, alluding to Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Paying impressionistic homage to that era, three floors of high-windowed bedrooms riff on Africa, the Americas, and Asia with tactile compositions of raffia, cane, silk, leafy greens and Atlantic blues, a roar of tiger print. All about are heavily textured paintings by Jorge Curval—a black-and-white portrait of a gentleman in mustache and bicorne hat; a thick-daubed woman smoking a paint brush. Climb to the top banister, peer down at the patterned tiles, and it feels like watching a Portuguese Downton Abbey. When it comes to the country’s post-millennium boom, Lisbon gets most of the column inches but Porto is just as exciting, and this is an apt poster child for the city’s revival. —Rick Jordan Address: R. de Mouzinho da Silveira N 228, 4050-417 Porto, PortugalPrice: Doubles from about $142 per night" - Abigail Malbon

Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments

"Set the scene Portugal’s fortunes have reversed in the past few years, with a growing appreciation of its wine, design scene, and landscapes, and a resulting boom in independent, artfully designed hotels. Much of the attention has been on Lisbon, everyone’s new best friend, but while Porto still has many empty, Miss Haversham-like facades, cranes have been marching on the horizon and the art nouveau city center has been revived. It’s smaller than the capital, much of it walkable—though there are photogenic wooden trams to hop on—and with the Douro running through it, spanned by several bridges including one by a certain Gustave Eiffel. What’s the backstory? The Torel is part of a small group that cut its teeth on the Avant Garde hotel, opening in 2017 above the Douro, with a quirky interior that takes in a living wall of moss in the spa, topsy-turvy faux-flower ceilings and rough-edged homages to famous painters. This is its second hotel in Porto and is more cohesive, classically structured in a former palazzo-turned-bank, with three floors of bedrooms linked by a dramatic central staircase, illuminated by the skylight above. The team invited in local artists and a design studio, with the brief riffing on the country’s seafaring Age of Discovery—you know, those intrepid 17th and 18th century explorers who battled sea monsters and charted far-off lands. Walk along the plant-potted entrance and there’s a gallery of sculpted heads looking down, antlered gods and spirits to one side, mere mortals on the other; large, deeply textured oil paintings by Jorge Curval—an elephant here, a cigarello-smoking woman there—are hung all about the building, alongside bespoke details such as door tassels and wooden cabinets. A third hotel opened in town earlier in 2020. What can we expect in our room? Each of the 12 bedrooms are individually designed, and imaginatively themed so each floor represents a different area of exploration—Africa, the Americas, Asia—defined by silk, raffia, cane, linens, and cotton, parrot-bright colors, tobacco browns, tiger prints, and wallpaper painstakingly made from banana leaf. The duplex Tea suite has a standalone bath rub beneath botanic prints, for example, while the two ground-floor Africa rooms have outdoor terraces; all rooms are high ceilinged, so even the smallest feels spacious; bathrooms tend to be dark, glittery spaces with brass taps and dramatic, lightning-strike marble. How about the food and drink? The dining room is a green-tinted conservatory-style space with jungle-sized fronds and tropical wallpaper prints. Breakfast is ordered the night before to avoid food waste, but can be added to in the morning, with colorful, handmade ceramic dishes bearing cheese, pastries, and quince jam. Later in the day there’s a short menu of tostas and tapas to choose from, such as cured meats and cheeses, pork cheek in a red-wine sauce, carob crepes and tuna ceviche. The bar’s more about discovering local wines than cocktails. What’s the crowd like? Small families and couples thrilled to have discovered this place, who keep to themselves apart from an occasional encounter in the library or bar. And locals are frequent visitors to the bar and bistro, which helps to create an atmosphere. Anything to say about the service? Low-key but bright, with the concierge desk set at the bottom of the stairs—this is a small hotel and most requests involve pointers to local restaurants and bars. Ask about a reservation at the rooftop bar across the Douro, owned by the same hotel group. What’s the neighborhood scene like? Turn right out of the hotel, walk up the hill and you’ll reach the railway station with its incredible blue-and-white ceramic murals, depicting historic scenes in the nation’s life; turn left and there’s the Victorian market, currently being restored. All around are small, family-run restaurants, wine shops, and workshops worth peeking into, with the rippling waters of the Douro, the neon-signed port houses and the Eiffel bridge just a short traipse away. Anything we missed? The top-floor library is a beatific, parquet-floored space flooded with natural light from the lozenge-shaped skylight—the sort of room you fantasize having yourself to shelve your own collection. Many of the titles—Rimbaud, Javanese architecture—may not be holiday page-turners, but it’s a lovely place to hole up in, particularly if you find the honesty bar in a vintage trunk. The main wine cellar, meanwhile, is housed in the former bank vault, with vintages worth planning a heist for. Anything you’d change? Very little. Perhaps put a few towel pegs in some of the bathrooms; USB chargers and Bluetooth speakers would be handy. Is it worth it? Yes, this a characterful hotel that pins you right in the fabric of Porto—though take a look at the group’s other two places in town." - Rick Jordan

My husband and I had a wonderful four night stay. Visiting in December, we were hoping for a quieter stay, less crowds outside and we were prepared for rain or shine. Porto was lively and the streets were decorated for the holiday.||The history of the building was a pleasure to experience. Located in the heart of Porto, our outings on foot were easy to plan, but the private car tour of the Douro Valley that they arranged for us was a highlight of the trip. ||The food and service were excellent, and we were well taken care of. It was easy to have a tray brought to the room if needed and also dine at a table in the small restaurant/bar.||Many thanks to the staff, especially George. ||This is an older building, rich in history. It is well staffed, clean and welcoming.

Staying at Torel Hotel is truly an experience. The service is outstanding and genuinely guest-oriented — special thanks to the housekeeping ladies who took such great care of our room and cleaned it twice a day! The reception staff were also very helpful and welcoming. We stayed in the Madeiras Exóticas Suite, and every moment spent there was wonderful. The suite was beautiful and exceptionally comfortable. The only small area for improvement could be the restaurant service. Given the rather unique breakfast concept — where everything is served fresh to the table — the staff could manage the dining room a bit more attentively to ensure guests receive everything they have ordered without delays. That said, the hotel itself is exceptional: a fantastic location, a magical atmosphere, excellent service, and great attention to detail. We also really appreciated the guided tour of Porto’s city center offered on Saturday. We will definitely be coming back!

Our stay at The Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments in Porto was excellent overall and left a very strong impression. The personnel were exceptionally attentive and genuinely welcoming, always ready to help with recommendations or practical matters. Our room was beautifully maintained and cleaned twice a day, which is a level of care you rarely encounter and truly appreciated.|The location is fantastic - central, convenient, and ideal for exploring Porto on foot. We were also pleasantly surprised with a complimentary room upgrade, which made the stay even more special and reflected the hotel’s commitment to guest satisfaction.|The only caveat was the breakfast service at the restaurant. While the food itself was good, the service felt somewhat disorganised and could benefit from better coordination, especially during busier hours.|Despite this minor issue, the overall experience was outstanding, and we would happily return and recommend this hotel to others looking for a high-quality stay in Porto.

Torel 1884 is a magical place and the staff could not have been more helpful or classy. We didn’t just feel welcomed here, we felt at home. You can tell they really love this place and want to share it with you. The location is perfect - walk out the door, and everything that is a “must do” in Porto is a lovely 10 minute walk away. The small restaurant is really good and the included breakfast is a great way to start the day. And be sure to go up to the honor bar on the third level and play a game of cribbage! We were there in late November and the value vs what we got from Torel 1884 was unbelievably high. Stay here and say hi to everyone for us!!

We had a wonderful stay at the Torel Suites and Apartments. We were located in one of the apartments with our room overlooking the street. The room was spacious with a kitchen and dining table. The bed was quite comfortable, as were the pillows. Someone came by each evening to turn down the bed and provide us with chocolates. From top to bottom, the staff was excellent. The apartments are a short walk (uphill) from the main hotel and Daniel graciously took our luggage from the hotel to the apartment and up the stairs to our apartment. The included breakfast was quite good and George provided outstanding service each morning. I can't recommend this hotel enough. For the price I doubt you will find a better hotel in Porto. Kudos to the staff and management for the great job they are doing.

An amazing experience! Our time in Porto was so memorable, and our stay here played a big part in that. Service was incredibly attentive and helpful, the rooms were very clean and beautiful, and the food delicious. They were so attentive to every detail and we just felt so welcome and relaxed while we were there. Our view from our room was perfect, and the hotel was very central to the historic part of Porto. If you’re going to Porto, this is a must stay!

Yelp
A beautiful facility with exquisite interior and well appointed rooms with views to die for. Located conveniently in the edge or old town and is close everything you need to visit. The restaurant has the best breakfast in the area, and George the morning waiter cheers you up every morning. The cherry on top is the free city tour by Francesco who is a historian of the city and he shares the insightful knowledge and observations you will never get from run of the mill tour guides out in the street. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Update to my previous review - I have uploaded proof that they were a) closed during the time of my intended stay, b) that they promised us a refund, and c) that it is now almost 7 months beyond the date of the promised refund and we have still not been granted our simple request. They have refused to answer calls or e-mails and do not allow anyone to engage with me. They have threatened me legally, saying I am harassing them, when I am only trying to get money that is legally owed to be and being unlawfully being held by this company. They have gone back on their written word - as well as violating section 4 of Decree 17/2020 of the Portuguese Law.

Yelp
Unique boutique hotel in the heart of the city. Staff goes out of their way to make your experience the best it can be! The rooms are beautiful and amenities are unlike any other you would receive in your standard hotel. Breakfast is out of this world too. Highly recommend !!

Yelp
The only reason why I hope this hotel doesn't go out of business is so that they can refund our money. They have held onto over $800 of our money since May of 2020. The trip was canceled and the HOTEL was CLOSED on the dates we were supposed to stay there. They refused to issue us a refund stating that we purchased non-refundable rooms. However, they were closed - so they couldn't provide us with the service we paid for. Finally, when the law dictated that the MUST pay us back, they said they will, but are waiting until the absolute last day possible. What are they doing with our money? Using it to collect interest. Do not stay here. DO NOT give them your money unless you enjoy supporting THIEVERY!

Yelp
It's a shame that we had to stay in one of their apartments nearby on the Rua das Flores. Because I saw photos of former guests' hotel rooms, and wow those look extremely beautiful. Not to say that the apartment we had was bad. It's just that it was quite small and the furnishings are not as upmarket as the ones in the hotel from how the photos look. The apartment we booked was a two bedroom (with one bathroom). However, it's a tiny space overall though it has a kitchenette and dining/living area. It appears that they took one apartment and split the bedroom into two. It was strange that each bedroom's doors were glass doors with curtains. But I suppose it's better than having no doors at all. Bathroom was great, shower had plentiful hot water, and the toiletries provided are from Castelbel, a high end Portuguese toiletries maker that produces lovely soaps, shampoo, and body lotion. One checks in at the main hotel then a staff member will walk you over to your apartment and show you around. Kudos to all of the staff we encountered as they were all so welcoming! Also they give guests a complimentary drink at the hotel's bar any time. Highly recommended!
