The Best Katsu Sandwiches In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Torraku Ramen used to be a ramen-only food truck, but now they’ve got a brick-and-mortar spot in Potrero Hill serving everything from donburi bowls to yakisoba. They also have a katsu sandwich that’s all-around excellent, and we especially love it because of the spicy mayo. The sandwich also comes with a side of dressing and cabbage salad, which you’ll want to stuff inside the sandwich yourself for a necessary crunch." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Google
The ramen was really good. Much better than what I can find in Toronto. The service was very welcoming. Plus was quiet and felt great after a long day in SF. If you’re near it. Check it out!

Google
Had 2 of my dinners here during my stay at the Samesun Hotel a couple of steps away. The food here singlehandedly raised my impression of Japanese food. The seafood yakisoba is the absolute best stir-fried noodles I've ever had - and I've had amazing Asian food before. They are also generous with their portion and protein. The staff is super adorable and respectful. The wait time may be slightly longer than what I'm used to but you know they made their food with care and skills. Highly recommend - you have to try!!!

Adam

Google
The food was delicious. We went from 5-7pm which is their happy hour, (discounted prices on select dishes). I got the Katsu Don with pork. It was crispy and fresh. They also gave us some pistachio ice cream at the very end. Would highly recommend.

Marwah Ibrahim

Google
I got the beef yakisoba and my firend got seafood ramen—both were super tasty! The yakisoba had tender beef and great flavor, and the seafood ramen came with fresh shrimp and squid in a rich, comforting broth. Portion sizes were generous, and the service was smooth. Will definitely come back next time I’m craving ramen! Highly recommended.

Google
A small place in the heart of San Francisco with cozy atmosphere, fast service and great food! Recommendations: Vegan/Vegetarian Appetizer: Edamame and soy nuggets Must try! Absolutely delicious nuggets served in a light, delicious broth. Ramen: Miso Vegan Ramen Decent and tasty ramen broth with great seaweed, tofu, tender bamboo shoots and soy protein chashu. For Meat lovers Appetizer: Chicken Karaage Crispy, tasty and wonderful. Must try! Ramen: Paitan Ramen Tasty broth and good Ramen! Dessert Splendid way to end the meal with coffee flavored ice cream!

Google
Still one of the best ramen experiences of my life — maybe even the best! The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles perfectly cooked, and every bite was just pure comfort. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were genuinely kind and attentive. Highly recommend to any ramen lover — this place is a gem!

Google
I got the Shoyu Ramen with the pork shoulder. I don't have any complaints at all but I'll start the rundown: Bowl was full, Broth was yummy, meat was tender enough, egg was PERFECT, the table spices were so yummy, and the employees were kind! On top of that the bowl was fuller than I've seen a few others lately. I'll remember her for sure 💜. What's cool too is that tip is included AND they gave me complimentary ice cream samples. 10/10

Google
So good!!! Had the Curry, and the others the tofu, it was all delicious, highly recommend!!! The place was so nice and very relaxing, the food looked exactly like the web site pictures!!!!

Lyle B.

Yelp
The food was excellent, The Yakisoba was huge, the flavor was perfect. Busy little place, worth the trip, and the surprise dessert was delicious. The artwork painted on the walls made it a more authentic Japanese dining experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Such a good ramen spot! A little bit hole in the wall vibes but the food is delicious. The miso ramen broth is so flavorful and you have to add the garlic crunchies for texture and extra flavor punch! You order from your phone but service was quick.
google avatar

Carrie Z.

Yelp
I ordered the Tonkotsu Super Paitan Ramen for $20. The broth flavorful, and the noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right texture. Unfortunately, the roasted pork shoulder had an off-putting taste and smell that affected the overall taste of the dish. I didn't think much of it at the time, but about an hour later, I experienced a stomach ache that lasted the rest of the afternoon. Also worth noting: the restaurant adds an automatic 18% service charge.

Yelp
Carload of teens, enjoying a drive through the City, and everyone was craving ramen. Headed through Union street and over Van Ness to Torraku. Small place with wild wall art! They told us upon entry that menus could be accessed with phones with QR codes on the wall. Of course, my phone wouldn't let me order online, only see the menu, which was quite frustrating. I used one of the kids phones to order, but would have rather had a menu. We ordered edamame, chicken karaage for appetizers. The chicken was unbelievably delicious!! So crunchy and great flavored coating, with tender thigh meat. We also had the chicken Katsu Don with rice, and two Paitan ramens and one Shoyu ramen. The broth on the Paitan Ramen was so flavorful, and the roast pork on mine, very tender. The others had pork belly and there were no complaints. They loved every bite. We were even given a sweet treat of homemade pistachio ice cream at the end of the meal. Would definitely come back for ramen, and chicken, too, but will ask for a menu next time.

Yelp
Excellent noodles and great customer service. I got an order to go and it was well packaged. It took a bit to get the food, but the wait is worth it.

Ann Y.

Yelp
Ordered the Gyu don. The beef was too chewy for me. Add an egg for additional $3. The egg was very good. Total $26.59 including tax and tip(18% added on by store) I think it is overpriced. Food was just okay. Store ambiance was good. Very minimal service because you order and pay by yourself by scanning the bar code on the table.

Miguel R.

Yelp
10/10 Best ramen I have ever tried. Top service and the ambiance was spectacular. For 20$ you have an amazing meal.

Yelp
We came here a few nights ago because we were in the neighborhood and craving ramen. It's one of those places where you scan a QR code at the table, place your order and pay before receiving your food. Note: they automatically include a tip when you pay. We started with some edamame. I was happy to see some veggie options and so I ordered the Miso Vegan Ramen, which comes with soy based chashu. I thought the broth had an overall good flavor and was pretty satisfied with my choice. My husband had the Seafood Ramen which, after tasting, he was not overly enthused about. He felt there were too many chewy/rubbery seafood items in it. To cap off our meal, the server brought over complimentary samples of yummy pistachio ice cream! Was this our favorite ramen in the city? Not by a long shot. But we thought the service was good and pricing was reasonable.

Yelp
I had my ramen with pork shoulder and it was so good! The service was quick and easy which was great since we were very hungry and had a flight soon. At the end of our meal, they offered us free pistachio ice cream! I loved this place and definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Andie H.

Yelp
Another good meal at Torraku. The tonkatsu ramen is my favorite, with the miso broth in close second. The chashu is super tender, and the pork belly is fattier, also very tender. Karage just as yummy as I remember it. $20 for a bowl of ramen. You now order and pay on your phone via QR code taped to the table. 15% gratuity is automatically charged to your order. They do have happy hour prices at certain times.
google avatar

Karlee J.

Yelp
A great addition to Lombard street! We loved every thing that we got including the house ramen and miso ramen! The service was excellent. They even had a high chair and baby silverware for our little one. We went at 5:30 on a weeknight and it wasn't too busy! Will be coming back:)
google avatar

Yelp
Hole in the wall gem! We order online while inside the restaurant, but pretty fast service. The ramen was oh so delicious and rich.

Yelp
Nice, little hole-in-the-wall ramen shop. I came here on a Sunday evening with some friends and had a pleasant experience. There's plenty of seating inside, as well as a few tables on the patio if you're looking for an outdoor/sidewalk experience. The staff here are super helpful and friendly. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen with pork belly (roughly around $20) and it was delicious! The broth was filling without making me feel too bloated afterwards. The egg is gummy and goes so well with the ramen. Next time, I'm ordering an extra egg with my bowl. My group also tried the chicken karaage and it was tasty and well-made. The texture of the chicken was great and it came with a tangy spicy-mayo sauce. Would highly recommend, especially during happy hour. Happy hour is 5pm-7pm, if I remember correctly. Drinks and appetizers are discounted. You could get a beer for $5. Come enjoy this awesome restaurant!
google avatar

Janus C.

Yelp
Ordered their squid karaage, their gyoza and their Tonkatsu ramen. I found the tonkatsu broth to be a bit weird - like they added a lot of soy sauce to the broth. Apps were tasty, especially the fried squid. Nice service and prompt!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was really good! It wasn't very crowded when we came for Saturday dinner, and the staff was super nice to let me order a chicken katsudon with steamed veggies instead of rice. The chicken katsu was super tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, and I was glad that I had veggies to go along with them.

Yelp
Been ordering from Torraku regularly for the last year and it's great delivered, but it's even better to go in person. Lately, I've been going in a couple times a month. You order from your phone. There's a QR code planted on each table and you pay directly for your food when you order. Simple, easy, efficient. Their happy hour is excellent. But it's all about the product. Let me be clear: I've had their ramen many times and it keeps me coming back. But I sat down to write this review because after eating their ramen dozens of times I finally tired their wings. And oh my goodness they are some of the best I've had in the bay. I love chicken wings. But these wings were dangerously crispy. The chicken itself was cooked perfectly so it pulled right off the bone, piping hot, juicy chicken flanks. You can choose a couple sauce flavors and they bring it out in a bowl on the side - preserving the crisp. Where to begin with the ramen? I always order the super paitan. The broth is unbelievable. My favorite part might be the bamboo shoots. Super tender, super good... The marinated egg half is perfectly gooey, and the portion of meat is substantial. It's even top with saffron. Also, shoutout to whomever painted the artwork on the walls. Galactic ramen! Super fun.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
We went on a Friday afternoon, and got seated right away. It's a cozy area, and the wall art is trippy. I got the miso ramen, and the portion is quite huge! The flavors are also deep and delicious.
google avatar

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Place sucks ass. Super understaffed. Waited 40min for our food, the couple next to us never even got their food so they left.
google avatar

Ann P.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this humble, hipster ramen joint. The broth is very well balanced- not too fatty and salty. Generous portions of chashu. And the noodles cooked on the firm side which I prefer. I added extra corn and menma - so good. Bonus points for the awesome Japanese city funk playing in the background.
google avatar

Iris H.

Yelp
More like a 3.5/5. I enjoyed the ramen broth and the fried squid a lot. The broth is flavorful but not too salty and the squid with the spicy mayo sauce is also very good. I didn't like the chashu from the ramen personally. I also wished the shrimp is crispier. It tastes more creamy than crispy, maybe due to the thin breading. Everything is transactional where you scan the code and pay online to get the food. It's a quick and easy dine place if you just want something casual.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
Got seated fairly quickly. My partner got the Katsu Sando and I got the Miso Ramen. They were both tasty, but the Ramen broth was a little too salty for my liking. Overall, a good experience!
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Great food. Nice staff. Would definitely come back next time we are in San Francisco. Curry Ramen was amazing!
google avatar

Gerard Y.

Yelp
Ordered a pork Tonkotsu Super Paitan Ramen along with chicken Karaage for appetizer. The breading on the chicken was crunchy and thin but the pieces were big and meaty. I'm glad the Paitan wasn't too heavy either as it seems to be at other places I've ordered from. This place was also playing great, jazzy jpop music. It's rare that I can mention eating a good meal while listening to great background music.
google avatar

Bella C.

Yelp
I've been craving ramen for so long and glad we decided to come here! We were able to sit down immediately and ordered online through the QR code. The inside interior was super cool and loved the ramen decor as well! I got the Miso ramen with black garlic and was super tasty! I loved the marinated eggs in the ramen and my boyfriend was super satisfied with his ramen as well!
google avatar

Ayush K.

Yelp
We went to Torraku ramen for dinner on a weekday. The place wasn't busy when we went, and it appeared like there was only one person working at the front desk and taking orders. Once you are seated, you can order as well as pay individually through their online menu. There were 3 of us, so we got a few items to share in addition to our individual ramen. We tried their fried shrimp, pork gyoza, chicken karaage, shoyu ramen, and tonkatsu ramen. The staff recommended the tonkatsu ramen over the curry ramen since it was our first time there. Chicken karaage was pretty good. It came with Japanese mayo. Its citrusy taste went really well with the karaage. Gyoza was decent, too. The ramen were a bit disappointing. The broth was flavorful but very watery. The chashu was very dry.
google avatar

D C.

Yelp
The restaurant is inconspicuous and it was slow when I arrived. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen with black garlic. The broth was very flavorful. The noodles were thick. The chasu was fatty and was a good portion to go with the bowl. I ordered the happy hour gyoza which was just okay. Overall a solid ramen spot that I would go back to. Next time I'll probably order extra noodles and try the other broth flavors. I'll pass on the happy hour items. The staff gave me a complimentary dessert as I was eating alone.

Angel R.

Yelp
Some of the best ramen I've tried plus amazing service!! Would definitely recommend to everyone.
google avatar

Steph P.

Yelp
We came on a Saturday with our toddler. Very efficient and friendly service. It was easy to get a seat. They had a high chair for our little one. We had the edamame, fried chicken appetizer, Tonkotsu special ramen and the vegetarian ramen. They were all great! We ate everything. In fact, we have never seen our toddler eat so much in a restaurant. Will definitely go back!
google avatar

Zena L.

Yelp
Came here for the happy hour. You scan a QR code and order from there. The order comes out pretty fast. I might have over ordered. Got the edamame, karage, shishito peppers, and ramen. Service was good and quick.
google avatar

Jim R.

Yelp
Wow. Best ramen I've ever had. The broth was so delicious. Sat quickly, inside is clean. Give it a try.
google avatar

Marilyn N.

Yelp
Came at 2:30 and got the whole place to ourselves. The meats were so tender and flavorful! Thank you for the sustenance, we were able to hike up the huge hill to the top of Lombard street afterwards.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Solid hipster spot for ramen, yakisoba and other tasty Japanese treats. Prices are fair and portions are large. Would definitely return. Happy hour 5-7 with alcohol and select food items included! Will definitely return!
google avatar

Brandyn N.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday just in time to order from the happy hour menu, immediately ordering the karaage and a healthy sized pitcher of beer, which ended up being more than enough for 2 people to drink. The karaage was tender, topped with some chili powder, and served with kewpie mayo. Nothing spectacular here, but definitely paired well with some Asahi. I had the Miso Ramen with Kakuni and added fried garlic. The ramen itself was good, with a tasty broth that hit the spot for the cold day it was. I was impressed by the fact that it was served with a tea egg. Though it was soft boiled, I felt that it was beginning to lean a little hard boiled. The pork belly was tender, however, certain cuts had a little too much excess fat on it. Overall this was a good experience. Torraku has plenty of tables to sit and enjoy, with a modern vibe and a lo-fi playlist to listen to as you eat.
google avatar

May L.

Yelp
A cozy little ramen shop near Lombard street. Clean and great service. Our large party got seated right away. Ordering is efficient. There's an online menu to directly place your order. The walls are decorated with interesting pop art. We sat across from an abstract painting of a neon orange sun. Was not the biggest fan of the bright colors, but just tried my best not to look at the wall. Food was great, and I enjoyed my meal. Unagi Don: 8/10 So delicious! The eel was rich and glazed with a sweet and savory sauce. My favorite. Miso Ramen with pork belly: 7/10 Solid ramen. Broth was tasty and creamy. Pork belly meat was tender. On the salty side, but the rice dish balanced it out. Overall a nice ramen spot for some good broth and comfort food. Would recommend!
google avatar

Neha J.

Yelp
A simple spot with delicious ramen. The ingredients are fresh, and there are lots of other options besides ramen which is great for those who are not in the mood.
google avatar

Jaime N.

Yelp
My favorite was the tonkotsu super Paitan ramen 5/5. That was the best broth I've had. It had thick ramen noodles with the right density, the braised shoulder was a better option than the pork belly, and they made the egg my absolutely favorite way...gelatinous. This is now my favorite ramen place. It kept well as leftovers too..except the noodles become too soft. My partner gave the curry ramen 4/5. I personally did not like it. Curry broth soup is not for me.
google avatar

Helena L.

Yelp
Friendly local spot for ramen! I stopped by for coffee next door and decided to pop in for lunch after. This is a definitely good value ramen stop that has an amazing amount of flavor. I really love how tender the noodles are here. Owner gave us some additional spicy paste that I am not kidding is HELLA SPICY but so worth it. You should definitely get the geso karraage since it tastes so tender and perfectly fried. My partner and I go the tonkatsu with chasu and shoyu with pork belly and both meats were flavorful and delicious. Egg well marinated too!
google avatar

Pam M.

Yelp
I dined with a friend & we realized that you order & pay via QR code after wondering if they handed out menus. Anywhoo, the orders via QR code go directly to the kitchen so there's less likelihood for error. We had edamame & fried oysters as appetizers (yum) & I had pork belly ramen & my friend had char siu ramen (leaner pork). We shared a small bottle of sake too. Everything was yummy. No dessert is available but they offer snacks for purchase at the counter.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Pretty good. New little spot, noticed it driving by and seems to fill up quick. Ordering was easy at the register with QR codes for the menu. We had gotten a seaweed salad, the shoyu, and the tonkotsu. Both were pretty heavy and oily I'd say, but the flavors were good. The noodles had good bite to them. I'd say my only gripe would be the temperature of the broth really. I'd generally just want it hotter but that's personal preference. I'd be interested to try the vegetarian offerings tho to see if the flavors work well for those as well. I'd likely get it to go and get the temperature up at home haha.
google avatar

Ricky K.

Yelp
Pretty convenient to have a good ramen place in the area! You would usually go to places like the Sunset or Japantown to grab a bowl of ramen, but you can come to place located on Lombard street, which to me is a pretty unique location! Overall, it was a pretty good place to eat at! I ended up getting the curry ramen and my family got the vegan ramen. I actually really liked the vegan ramen when I tried theirs but the curry ramen itself was good as well. the curry I expected to have a bigger taste profile to it. Maybe an extra bit of curry would of been a lil better but nonetheless it was still good. The ramen egg was nicely marinated and the pork belly inside was tender. But definitely to my surprise, the vegan ramen took the cake for me! I thought the broth itself was really good and aside from the tofu, the vegan patty was actually really good. I could definitely see myself ordering it for myself again and I would of course add a ramen egg to my bowl as well. This was a pretty solid ramen place overall. The service was good, and the food came out very quickly as well which was a plus. I would come back here for sure!
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
Eh, it was ok, very average experience in ramen, not great but edible. The soup was marketed as long time in the pot, didn't taste like it

Michelle N.

Yelp
My husband and I LOVE eating the food here! It's consistently very delicious. We especially love the ebi furai and katsu sando! I'm not one to usually post reviews but I felt compelled to because of the phenomenal service! The person at the cash register was a taller gentleman and he was very friendly. I always order my food to go and he handed me the bag with a smile. I get in my car to drive home and it won't start. Long story short the super friendly worker in the front HELPED ME JUMP START MY CAR. I try to give him some money for his troubles but he politely declines, saying "I'm just trying to help." WHAT A GOOD PERSON!!! The whole ordeal took a while (because I don't know cars) and by the time I got home, the food STILL tasted SO GOOD. I can't thank you enough Torraku Ramen worker! I am definitely going to come by more often!

Lauren W.

Yelp
Delicious food! First time in the area and was looking for dinner. Had the tonkatsu ramen and beef yaki soba. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Idalia D.

Yelp
I had always wanted to try the REAL way of eating Ramen but honestly it just wasn't for me. The brown egg through me off and the flavor just didn't hit. My son loves it but he was also stationed in Korea for over a year. The place is so super cute and the service was great! I think I am use to the cheap old Ramen way. lol
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Their Ramen is very good and hearty. Parking in the area can sometimes be a little difficult to find but not too bad.
google avatar

Szymon R.

Yelp
8.3/10 Overall good tonkotsu ramen, on the pricier side but overall I enjoyed it. Enough msg. Good balance of toppings. Good noodle and solid broth.
google avatar

Gaurav S.

Yelp
Excellent service and vibe! Ramen was very tasty! We even tried the pan fried noodles and they were delicious as well! Would love coming back here for another yummy retreat!
google avatar

Julia J.

Yelp
good ramen, easy way of ordering. Service can be better given that they automatically take 15% tip with the mobile ordering and payment. Place looked clean. portions can be bigger given the price.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place! I have tried many ramen places and this place is pretty good! We got the geso karage, paitan ramen and curry ramen. The geso karage was soooo good! I would come back just for this! So crispy, it's a must have if you ask me. I thought the curry ramen tasted more flavorful than the paitan ramen. Also you get a choice between chasu and pork belly. Go with the pork belly, so much more flavor than the chasu in my opinion!
