Hold The Fort: All Along The Watchtower Hotels

"Italy isn’t exactly hurting for impressive small hotels, but Torre di Moravola stands out all the same. Frankly, they had us at “thousand-year-old Umbrian hilltop watchtower converted into a seven-room boutique hotel,” and that was before we ever saw inside. For while the exterior may be a thousand years old, the interiors are as modern as they come." - Mark Fedeli

Torre di Moravola, Umbria, Italy - Explore & Book

"The project of architect Christopher Chong and his designer wife Seonaid Mackenzie, Moravola is the result of years of hard slog and an extraordinary shared vision. The bones of this 10th-century Umbrian watchtower – built to protect the hill town of Montone and once inhabited by knights – have been carefully restored to their former glory, while inside the space has been transformed. Concrete, glass and travertine stone dominate in seven bedrooms, their monastic simplicity and sleek, architectural details complementing the medieval vibe. Overlooking the Carpini valley where St Francis of Assisi roamed, it’s hard not to slip into hyperbole about the views. Wizened olive trees grow on vertiginous hillsides, thick forests that once hid bandits now thrum with birds and wild boar... indeed the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a shepherdess here. Moravola is a perfect retreat for starry-eyed couples or large groups of friends who can make as much noise as they like. Christopher and Seonaid produce delicious local food and have a relaxed, house-party approach to hosting guests. Highs Peace, beauty and history steeped in every inch of wild, green, mountainous Umbria, still untouched by the Chiantishire tribes Moravola is its owners: Seonaid and Christopher are energetic hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble; I got married here, and it all went beautifully A seamless blend of ancient and modern: a cantilevered glass Juliet balcony, landscaped terraces, sleek pavilions, a stone fire pool The Main Tower Suite with its mezzanine walkway and private terrace The spectacular views and sunsets; a sense of being removed from reality Lows If you’re not a fan of fuss-free design or minimalism, this isn’t for you Service is friendly to a fault but slightly haphazard – there are no swarms of staff or room service Moravola is isolated (a plus in itself but you’ll need a car), and hard to find. The hilltop road leading there is either exhilarating or hair-raising depending on your disposition! We have yet to see the latest additions in person but they look amazing No kids between the ages of 4 and 15" - Charlotte Sinclair

I selfishly wasn’t going to write this as I felt I wanted to keep it to myself! That wouldn’t be right!|This might be one of the best places I have ever stayed in. |It is not possible to describe in words and give justice to the setting/location, it simply gets full marks.|The rooms are on a different level, as in “off the scale”. They are very modern, funky and what ever the opposite of boring is!|The lay out of the villa/hotel (not sure what the official term is, feels wrong calling it a hotel as it’s just too nice for that) is incredible. There are multiple outdoor (and indoor) seating areas that you will not be able to exhaust on a few nights stay. The ones we encountered were just amazing.||Food - again, simply put - off the scale. Not just the best food we have ever had in Italy but most probably wider a field. ||The variety on the few nights we were there was insane. From very basic/simple salad and lasagne, which will go down as one of the best we have ever had (sorry if this is getting boring now but feel compelled to get the point over), to some extremely different, non Italian with a Far Eastern twist. |With regards to breakfast, I’d challenge most people to see if they have ever had anything better..||Service - same theme, exemplary. Lovely, extremely interesting people who love what they do and do it with passion and it shows..

DO NOT STAY HERE. ROOM INFESTED WITH SCORPIONS, CENTIPEDES, SPIDERS, SLUGS, AND MORE. ||Photos speak for themselves. ||The room wasn't weatherproofed at all, so critters were crawling in and out as they pleased.

My wife and I stayed at Torre di Moravola in the West Tower suite for 3 nights in September 2024.||Torre di Moravola has just 7 rooms/suites. The guests are international.||Location, welcome, combination of a watchtower of around 1100 with modern design are beautiful. The property is run by an male architect from Hong Kong and a female designer from Scotland and was completely renovated by them around 15 years ago.||||The man is also responsible for the kitchen and does his job very well and is a very empathetic person.||||His female partner also appeared very helpful at first. There was a warm welcome and lots of good tips for the area (e.g. visiting the nearby cities of Perugia, Gubbio and Assisi).||It was a bit irritating that she addressed her cat with “you fat bitch” in front of guests and gave me the tip “you have to be intelligent..”||||My wife unfortunately arrived at the hotel with symptoms of illness (later it turned out that it was a bacterial infection - emergency at the next place on our trip).||The hostess of our hotel recommended her homemade Chinese laxative tablets (“Flush it all out") to my wife. A big mistake on our part to take these pills. Due to the adventurous stairs to our suite, my wife had problems reaching the toilet in the basement from the bed upstairs the following night. Unfortunately, the room was also not cleaned the following day. The day after, I was immediately asked to a "consulation" by the “hostess” after our return from a day trip. In this conversation, the “hostess” complained angrily and loudly and in the presence of other guests about the condition of the room and about my wife! ||So the hostess complained about an effect she had previously caused with her pills!||No "how is your wife" nothing.||I was asked to leave Torre di Moravola immediately with my sick wife - I was able to negotiate on the regular departure day. Before the interview, she had already asked the tour operator about me and complained. I was also charged 150 € extra cleaning costs (3 towels, 1 blanket).||I have never experienced such a rude service situation like this in any hotel before.||Hospitality looks different. Don't go there.

Hello, Torre di Moravola is the most special place I have ever stayed at. The owner Seonaid is one of the most generous hostesses I have ever experienced in a hotel. The hotel is Gorgeous!! impeccable style, super clean and the food is to die for. The surrounding area is so magical and the air smells divine. It is so beautiful there that we actually did a photoshoot for a beauty brand there. Seonaid has incredible taste and style. Her husband is the architect who made this place a mix of ancient history with modern luxury. The rooms are so unique. I am very picky with cleanliness, this place is spot less and filled with fresh air. They also customize the food for your dietary needs with the most delicious yummy ingredients, healthy and locally grown. It is hard to get a reservation as they are open only part of the year. Super worth it to book in advance… can not wait for my next visit! Thank you Torre di Moravola

Lovely hosts. Modern renovation of a medieval watch tower. Loved the ideas and the clean lines of the modern style. Definitely not a ‚classical‘ hotel stay. | Breakfast, lunch and diner were delicious. Diner is not offered every night, but there are so many places to go to in the surrounding countryside. | Recommend cooling down in the infinity pool, while taking in the country views…

Seonaid and Christopher reimagined a ruin into a modern design forward hostelry. They are the most gracious of hosts and are accomplished design professionals in their own right as well. Christopher and the hotel dogs Daphne and Aphrodite took us on a guided ramble showing us the varying landscape around the grounds, and the hotel despite being in a rural setting is convenient to the many delightful hilltop towns in Umbria and Tuscany. The food and wine were wonderful as were the rooms and grounds and we cannot wait until we visit again.

Seonaid & Christopher are incredible. What they’ve created here is absolutely genius, a truely restorative experience of peace and tranquillity with a relaxed family vibe. The spa suite is beautifully designed and gives you your own space but you can still enjoy the Villa public spaces if you want to mix it up. And their gorgeous pets just make place even more genuine.
