We completed a three week trip around Italy at this beautiful retreat near Montone in Umbria. If you're interested in staying at a Belmond, 4 Seasons or a large luxury brand, this isn't the place for you. If you want a unique experience, in a beautifully restored 12th century watch tower, set on the most perfect hillside, with amazing food and surrounded by impeccably designed interiors, then Torre Di Moravola is for you. Seonaid and Christopher are a special duo. Christopher is the chef and also the architect of this beautiful restoration and Seonaid is the main host. I was a bit put off when we first arrived, as Seonaid can be a bit prickly. After we settled into the main tower suite and had a wonderful nights' sleep, the morning brought a beautiful breakfast on the east terrance and a less prickly Seonaid. It's a small boutique hotel with 7 rooms. Each quite beautifully decorated by Seonaid. The setting is sublime. Views over the hillsides of Umbria. Christopher's design of this restored building is impeccable, combining a modern feel and incorporating the original details. The furnishings in the two living rooms are beautiful. I can imagine coming back when it's chilly and sitting with a book by the fireplace in one of these spaces. The main tower suite where we stayed is stunning and super comfortable. The east terrace where breakfast is served looks out onto hills with white cows grazing. The west pavillion is where we had lunch. Again, gorgeous views and delicious food. Speaking of food....Christopher is an amazing chef. We only had breakfasts and the occasional lunch at hotel, but each meal was wonderful. There are some days when you're on your own for dinner, as the hosts take a night off occasionally, but the restaurants in the nearby towns are fabulous. Seonaid recommended a little spot in the town of Montone where I had maybe the best steak I've ever eaten. The pool area is beautiful with, again, non-stop views and beautiful gardens. There are a few things that the hosts could improve upon: a/c would be nice, although with the windows open (screens attached) and a fan, I was quite comfortable. Getting bottled water was a bit of a fuss. Would be nice, just to have it replaced every day without asking. Lastly, there seems to be a space next to the mini frig that looks like it was meant to have an espresso machine, but unfortunately there wasn't one. Overall, staying at Torre di Moravola was a unique and wonderful experience. If you're too fussy this may not be the place for you. This isn't run like a usual hotel. Sometimes the service is spotty. You can't really put a value on an experience. Each person is different and have unique expectations when they're on holiday. If you stay at Torre di Moravola you need to be flexible and speak up if you need something rather than wait and think it's going to be provided if you don't ask. I found both Seonaid and Christopher to be interesting, eccentric hosts and enjoyed almost every minute of our stay at their stunning retreat. I would definitely stay there again if a trip to Umbria is in my future. I rated everything as excellent, but I found the eccentricities of the hotel charming, someone else might not.
