****Somebody call the Firefighters! My mouth is on fire!!
The decal on the side of the truck has a mexican dude, with a sombrero, blowing fire out of his mouth is legit. One of the spicest food I've ever had the pleasure to try.
After heading to Santa Ana to donate a tv to Goowill (this place accepts 26 in' +), we had our eye on some good looking tortas drizzled with sauce all over it "Ahogada". From the yelp description, the food was mexican but upon arriving we realized it was also a food truck that seemed to be their permanent spot. It was situated on a small street with cars lined on both sides. On the sidewalk, they had a small bench set up against a fence and it was littered with customers. People were littered about standing, sitting in their cars, and on the benches in order to scarf down their delicious meal.
After perusing the menu, we decided to tentatively order the carnitas ahogada, being that we weren't sure how good, or bad, this was going to be. After a short wait, our order came out, a beautiful torta screaming bright red due to the sauce; there were slices of onions and extra pieces of carnitas shrewn about.
The first bite yielded emotions ranging from slight confusion, to recognition, to awe, and then love. It was slightly confusing to us noobs that the bread they used was soo hard, but then the delicious and flavorful carnitas hit us, along with the combination of the sauce, created utter magical explosions in our mouth! We also started to understand that maybe we were supposed to let the sauce soak into the hard bread to soften it up a bit and to further flavor the torta. Amazing, we've never tried anything like it. 5.0 stars!
After getting our feet wet, we decided to venture into bigger game and tried the Pastor Tacos and Pierna Tacos.
Pastor-5.5 stars! One of the best, fatiest, oiliest, most flavorful adobado tacos! For $2 a piece, you get tacos fully loaded with protein and even slices of avocadoes
Pierna- 4.5 stars! Didn't know what it was at first, but the owner said pork leg. Again the shreds of proteins yielded tasty results but I didn't find it as tasty as adobado.
To wrap this up, I talked to the owner for a bit and it seemed like these guys were around for at least 15 years already, but I guess real authentic mexicans, that know how to eat, don't really yelp.
It was a little different from the hipster food trucks we were used to, but heck, I'd take this roach coach over any of those fads any day! Can't get any more authentic than this, definitely deserving of a MUY BUENO stamp!
