Tortas El Recreo - Review - Iztacalco - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"Tortas El Recreo a.k.a. “El Vaquita” is atorteríain Iztacalco that doubles as a culinary dare. Their tortas are piled so high that they seem to defy gravity. They only have two sizes, the one-pound chica and the two-pound mediana, but both can feed a small army. We suggest the torta de pierna al horno, draped in cheese that stretches into long, mozzarella‑style ribbons. Adding to the fun of eating here is the approachable and rowdy energy. Think neon lights, constant chatter, and staff who’ll greet you like long‑lost family." - Guillaume Guevara

Always a treat!!! These are the ORIGINAL ones!!! Don’t be fooled by those around the area!!! The passion fruit drink is to die for!!! Also their “fresas com crema” (strawberries in cream)!

I don’t understand why all the buzz around this average meal, it’s overpriced, overrated and quite frankly not even slightly good ! The bread is regular sized, it doesn’t have an extraordinary good taste. The flavours are at most, if not less, rated as plain barely OK, absolutely nothing beyond that, $130 is not worthy. Don’t waste your money and time here, there are far better options available far testier.

I saw them on YouTube and I had to try them delicious tortas. The sauces they use is flavorful, the meat is tender. Would recommend.

My wife and I went to this place due its famous reputation in social networks and ended up quite disappointed. The place is located at Av. del Recreo, a little bit close to Metrobus La Viga, a 650 metres walk. When we arrived we get surprised because the venue was too small. There were some tables underneath a small tent at the edge of the asphalt, so we sit on a table and ordered 2 tortas and 2 sodas, the tortas are made with roasted leg of pork, avocado, cream, sliced raw onion, sliced tomato, fried crushed beans and butter. At the first sight the tortas look like normal size, but when you open its wrapping, you will notice that the proportions are more than enough. When we tasted the tortas for the first time were delicious but suddenly started loosing flavour, we observed that the meat was just boiled and when the cook was preparing the tortas, he spread some butter on the grill and then put the meat over to add some flavour. At the end we resulted paying $320 pesos just for 2 tortas and 2 sodas, such an expensive experience. Maybe this spot was famous in the past but nowadays it does not worth have a bite here.

The tortas are really good, about a pound for the "small" ones. The prices are a bit on the high end but considering the quality of the ingredients, I will definitely pay for them. The salsa is not spicy at all and is flavorful. Only thing is, they are usually open from 6:00pm to 3:00 am and I can't ever finish one of them during that time range so I always take half to go.

Yelp
What can I say, perhaps the best tortas in CDMX. I saw them featured in a YouTube video so we decided to give it a try. Glad we did. Abuelita was busy turning them out that we couldn't wait to bite into them. Delicious to the end. They are large, enough to feed two or one if really hungry. Service was great, and abuelita spent some time talking to us at the end. Great person. If you are in CDMX don't miss out on this gem. Look for the rear sign that says Las Originales" as there are others close by that look similiar.
