I hosted a cocktail event here during the holidays and I could have not been more pleased with the level of service and professionalism we got. Megan (and the entire service team) went above and beyond to make our event a success. I appreciate how efficient and accommodating they were. I didn’t have to worry about a thing because I was in good hands. Also! The food was excellent and the cocktails were creative and delicious. I’ll definitely be coming back here!

Tortazo in NYC offers a delightful dining experience! The food was delicious, with flavors that truly hit the mark. The vibe was lively and inviting, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal. To top it off, the staff was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall great experience. Definitely a place worth visiting.

Believe the Hype. This food was so delicious and filling. The portions of the tortas are just right. The ingredients are fresh and the churros are so light and crispy. Highly recommended.

Google
Tortazo is an impressive dining spot with a large, beautifully decorated venue. We started with chips and guacamole and fried plantains, both delicious. The highlight was the mushroom and extra cheese quesadillas, so amazing we ordered another to go! Kenny, our server, was exceptional—friendly and attentive to our every need. Highly recommended!

Google
Love Rick Bayless and the food was overall really solid. The salsa and chips were supper salty but flavorful and the Milanese torta was the winner. The Cubana was light on filling and they were out of barbacoa. The bar staff was not attentive despite only one other at the bar and we had to flag them down for water, drinks, and food.

Google
Very pretty restaurant with just ok food. The churros were overcooked and tasted like crispy bread sticks. Buy them on the street instead to get the actual real ones which are thicker and chewier. Speaking of chicloso, the carne asada was like chewing gum. I prefer my tortas heftier. They need to add refried beans and jalapeno, etc. the tlayuda was small and interesting fact, they serve it with scissors so that you can cut it up into manageable pieces. The restaurant is gorgeous though! Beautifully decorated.

Google
We had a great experience at this Mexican restaurant. After a workout, we were looking for some healthy and delicious food, and we found just the right place. We shared the chorizo and avocado tlayuda, a traditional Oaxacan open-faced pizza made with a crispy corn tortilla, topped with refried beans and other toppings. Even though we've been to Mexico many times, it was our first time trying this dish. The portion was generous for two people, and with a cocktail each, we were completely satisfied. I would recommend the tamarindo and mango Paloma if you like something unique or the watermelon margarita if you prefer something sweeter. They also have a happy hour from 4-6:30 pm on weekdays, which we plan on taking advantage of during our next visit.

Really liked the experience here. Very chill spot with good food! Really enjoyed the roasted mushroom quesadillas and tacos - must try! Also can never go wrong with churros. Service was great too! Would recommend!

It was on the quieter side for a Monday night, to which we enjoyed as we could sit at the bar and chat up with the bartender. The decors were very upbeat! They also have a happy hour from 4-6:30 pm on weekdays, which we plan on taking advantage of during our next visit.

Yelp
Bummed the NoMad location of Tortazo closed, but this one is also great and accepts reservations. I tried: + Prickly pear agua fresca + El Tortazo salad + Chips and guac + Steak and rajas quesadilla The quesadilla was my favorite. Also enjoyed the guac and drink. Service was great and food came out quickly - you can definitely be in and out of here in 45. Useful as a casual pre-theater spot!

Yelp
On family vacation to New York City, and we were feeling like Mexican food, and saw a place across the street from our hotel. I recognized the name attached to the signage, and knew who Rick Bayless was. We went in and no one was inside customer wise (this was at 7pm on a Saturday). I was a bit worried, but we sat down and ordered. The service took a while, but eventually we had our orders taken and some drinks. The food came out before the drinks, but it looked delicious and it was hot and fresh. I asked for the hottest hot sauce they had, and they delivered. Excellent food, great drinks, and a fair price NYC wise. Keep up the good work, but bring those drinks out before the food!

Yelp
Second time trying Tortazo and I must say the food was still very mid. I had a torta this time. Since they built their reputation around CDMX style tortas, I thought it would be worth a go. I ordered a chicken Milanese sandwich and churros. Nothing about the sandwich reminded me of CDMX. There were barely any refried beans on the sandwich and overall, the food lacked flavor. I also wasn't crazy about the jalapeño slaw. It wasn't spicy (which was actually a positive for me) but it didn't add anything. The churros were pretty good though. My order was ready very quickly for takeout. I can't say they did anything wrong this time, it's just not somewhere I would probably order from again if given the choice.

Yelp
I was so super excited to hear that Rick Bayless opened up a restaurant here in NYC as I've only had his amazing Mexican food when I've visited Chicago. I stopped in before a concert at MSG and had a Maíz old-fashioned which was very strong but very good and a Cubana Torta. The flavors of the torta were outstanding! So much rich and deep flavor with nice heat and avocado to cool it down however, I was really disappointed it was only one thin slice of pork in the sandwich. I'd really like to go back and try some more and hopefully those are put together better.

Yelp
Tlayuda with asparagus, arugula, and goat cheese and some inexplicably wonderful salsa. Guacamole and 2 salsas that shouldn't be missed and a beef torta that wash luscious. The Dj was excellent as well as the service. Will definitely go again!

Yelp
Rick Bayliss is America's king of authentic Mexican food. It's great that he's opened these casual and value priced outlets for Mexican Street food, and even nicer that it's an affordable option with table service near Times Square.

Yelp
I would have expected more quality from these place as it has many locations. The service is okay and the restaurant is nice but the food is literally bad. Its VERY SALTY and it has no real flavor. We had the SALSA CHIPS, CHORIZO AND AVOCADO TLAYUDAS, and CARNITAS TACOS. Honestly the salsa chips was the only decent dish. We drank 2 jars of water and couldn't finish the food. They make you tip on their faces, which is honestly rude.

Yelp
Tortazo has gone through a transformation that can be categorized as a devolution. When they first opened as a fast casual concept serving easy Mexican cuisine you could order from a kiosk, I quite enjoyed the concept. The food came out decent and you could even get cocktails at the bar. Once they turned into a full service sit down restaurant, the prices shot up, the food lacks flavor and the service is abysmal. It feels like a restaurant in the suburbs, and not in the most competitive market for restaurants.

Yelp
Affordable mid-level Mexican restaurant just South of Times Square. This is a quick walk to a theater and port authority. It's convenient whether you are heading to Broadway or Bryant Park. The atmosphere has lounge style plush bench-style seating and standard wooden chairs. There were enough tables for a group, but I'd recommend 4 people max given the layout and table size. There's ambient music but nothing was distracting. The tortilla soup was served in a glazed clay pot. It was a large meal-sized portion. I was surprised at the amount of cheese in this. I think the salt level was a bit too high. I took a star off for this. If you like a less spicy, more cheesy version, this is it for you. For a small up charge you can add a generous portion of sliced chicken. This was the first time I've tried tlyuda. We went with the corn tlyuda which had chihuahua cheese, pabalano peppers, radishes, and serrano pepper Mayo. We were given a pair of pizza scissors to cut our own slices. This is a perfect sized appetizer for 4. The tortilla is crispy and breaks like a cracker. Our waitress told us that this is a Oaxacan dish and there a person typically eats this as a single serve portion. They fold it over to eat like a sandwich. I appreciated the background on this. The flavor was mild but texturally satisfying with a nice crunch.

Yelp
Stopped by here during happy hour while waiting for an appointment in the area. Had some chips and salsa and tried the happy hour margarita and paloma. Everything was great and the prices are great as well! It is located in a very touristy location but is not crazy busy inside (or at least when I was there).

Yelp
Fast easy, really good Mexican food. Great service! The carnitas tacos and guacamole are a must! Times Square location makes for a quick, easy meal before or after a Broadway show. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Quality chips and flavorful thick guac with red onions. I was less of a fan of the green and red sauces.

Yelp
I was riding the R train up to Margon to get a Cuban sandwich and the train was packed, so I got off at 40th and Broadway and figured I'd just walk the rest of the way. When I got up to the street, boom! Turns out Rick Bayless has a new restaurant right at the subway stop. I've long been interested in his books and show (I'm a white guy who likes making Mexican food, surprising, I know), but had never made it to Chicago to go to one of his restaurants, so seeing that the place was open and there was no wait, I had to stop in. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a friendly bartender who provided a menu and water (there is bottled, but I went tap). Looking through the menu, there's a variety of options suitable for groups and solo diners. The namesake, tortas, are obviously available, with chicken, pork, beef and vegetarian options, each recognizable as classic Mexican sandwiches as interpreted through a more upscale take. Though I didn't get to try this time, the tlayudas are also very tempting, and would be fantastic for a bigger group or happy hour. The menu also features tacos, tostadas, soups, salads, snacks, sides and churros (also didn't get to try, but the person dining next to me at the bar got some and they looked absolutely incredible). There's also an extensive cocktail program and draft beer. Having already been in the mood for a Cuban sandwich, I figured a torta cubana would be a great choice, as well as a good comparison to tortas I had previously had. I also ordered a draft beer (a Mexican(?) craft lager) and the peanuts with chili and lime. As you'd expect, the peanuts came before the sandwich and were very good, providing a nice salty, citrusy snack to eat as I sipped on my beer. Soon after, my torta came out. It was simply fantastic. The cilantro crema and chipotle mustard provided a wonderful creaminess along with the avocado that balanced nicely with the smoky meat and crunchy roll. Easily one of the better tortas I've had in my life, and well worth the $16 (I can very easily see myself walking over to pick up a to go order when I'm in the city for work). Overall, fantastic. Writing this review is making me consider going back for the second day in a row tomorrow. Go now before more people realize how great this place is.

Yelp
Holy $&@! did this place suck! Soggy chips, salty enchiladas, friend didn't finish his highly recommended shrimp tacos as they were "one note and a crappy one at that"... The margaritas were good though. But the food was just plain sad. The fact they could screw up the most simple dishes was beyond logic. Waitstaff was good. Food just sucked.
google avatar

Emma K.

Yelp
Just ok. $10 happy hour marg which is nice. $19 for three enchiladas with no other side. Flavor of drinks and food is lacking. You're in Times Square/theatre district and it is what it is-- you don't need a res, but nothing to write home about. Service was great and very friendly though! Always a plus for that.

Yelp
Hidden outside of Times Square, we found this restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised. Didn't realize it was a chain because it tastes very authentic! Everything is very fresh but keep in mind of the ingredients because it can either get spicy real quick or bland. Staff are very helpful and smiling every step of the way. I enjoyed the vibe very much (although I don't speak Spanish) and the kids were dancing all of the way through. It's nice to find a restaurant that you can get out of the Times Square hustle and enjoy a meal! Try it for yourself!
google avatar

Ash B.

Yelp
As a vegetarian, I'm always hesitant when mushrooms are used as the veggie option or meat substitute but the mushroom tacos here were phenomenal. Super flavorful. The crispy cheese in the tacos made them even better. And the salsa served with the tacos? The eggplant torta was delicious too. Honestly, great place to grab a bite!
google avatar

Gavie V.

Yelp
Excited to have a New Mexican option in the area and the tortas from here are amazing! I've only been able to visit for takeout during lunch, but it's still pretty busy. Very cute tropical decor that's inviting you to have a good time! The staff seems to be very friendly and even offer you water while you wait for your meal to be ready. So far I've had the torta de pollo Milanese twice and I can't help but crave it. The bread is super fresh and pressed and toasted to a great texture. The creamy bean spread and pickled radish is a great compliment to the crispy chicken. Cannot wait to stop by for an after work bites and a drink, seems they have rotational cocktails and beers on tap.

Yelp
At Times Square, we went all the way from mid town, based on there advertisement about taco style pizza. Well what was shown on menu, website did not match. Server told us it is seasonal and not available. Well, we were hungry so decided to order something else. Being vegetarian- limited options. Also Chips & Guacamole - chips were terrible - looks like triple fried. Quesadilla with mushroom- it was full of oil and soggy. Service was quick but attitude of servers were bad. Avoid this place at all cost. Ambience - good. Place was 90% vacant and service was poor.

Breanna S.

Yelp
The aesthetic of this restaurant is delightful! Definitely a whole vibe and they got great music playing. Customer service was spot on, they were all polite, helpful and definitely giving off a vibe that they're the kind of restaurant that's "family". (Green)Chicken chilaquiles: 10/10, would absolutely recommend. Shrimp de Diablo tacos: 6/10. They were good but didn't remind me of my grandmother lol. I'm biased.
google avatar

Yelp
Welcome to Times Square, Tortazo! I got a sneak peek before the opening, and the decor, food, and staff are amazing. This is opened by Top Chef Masters winner Rick Bayless (also a 7x James Beard award winner), and it will likely be one of my new go-to spots in the area. ORDER: Torta, Tacos (I love the carnitas!), Chips & Guac, Churros, Mexican Hot Chocolate TIP: There's a Churros & Hot Chocolate window that's so cute - stop by to pick up a treat on the way to Bryant Park or before a show - open Jan 19!

Yelp
We were on a girls trip in the city and our first stop was Joe's Pizza. Unfortunately, there was a long line to wait and order a slice. Fortunately we walked past it and stumbled upon Tortazo. From the get go, the service and the speediness of getting our food was exceptional. Our cocktails and food were quite tasty. Who goes to Manhattan and dines at a Mexican joint when you are from Texas? We were pleasantly surprised and very content with every aspect of our dining experience. Lastly, the bathroom was super clean and high tech with no touch Dyson products. We highly recommend Tortazo's.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Ok, so I have mixed feeling about this place. My friend and I visited right before our Broadway show. The bartender and staff in general were extremely nice and friendly, I have 0 complaints in that department. We had a "Cubana" sandwich which has Berkshire pork loin, bacon, cheese, arugula, cilantro crema. As you see on the pic it wasn't ta big deal, barely any meat in it or even arugula. The margaritas we ordered were tasteless :( so watery! Also, it was either cheap tequila or we were just not feeling them. I would love to give this place another chance, perhaps come back during a different time? By the way we were there on a Tuesday night so it wasn't packed or anything.
google avatar

Sharm S.

Yelp
All you need to know is there is a churro window. I mean it doesn't get much better than that! Came in for a preview before opening. Love the decor and all the delicious food. For my veggies def try the mushroom tacos. Churros come with chocolate or sprinkles. I think this is a great addition to Times Square!
google avatar

Joel C.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place after a long day in Manhattan. Service was incredible and the food delicious. Chips and salsa were delicious with the chips being thick. The mushroom quesadilla was to die for. Full of flavor. Carnita tacos were delicious too. Ended the meal with pistachio glazed churros. Amazing! Yari, our server and Donovan the kitchen manager, were both attentive and helpful. Definitely a great experience.

Yelp
Before our Broadway show, Once Upon A One More Time (which is a fun show to watch), I wanted to go to Joe's for dinner and get some slices of pizza, but the line was wrapped around the block and the rain was coming down, so we ended up at Tortazo. I know who Rick Bayless is so to see this is his Mexican restaurant, I was kind of excited to try the food. My family kept it simple and we all picked a dish and overall, the food was fine. The chicken and bacon quesadilla was yummy. It was juicy and cheesy and the salsa that came with it was addictive. I just wish there were more, there were only three pieces, which I found to be stingy. I would think for the price you'd at least get a minimum of four pieces. The guac cobb was boring, the guac on it was the best part of the salad. The chipotle-roasted chicken torta was my least favorite. I just thought there was too much going on. I wasn't even sure what flavors I was tasting and there was too much arugula and I am not a fan of black beans. I'd probably try a new dish if I go back, or stick to the chicken bacon quesadillas that I liked.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Wednesday and was able to get seated right away. Food was pretty tasty, fast service, and overall had a nice vibe for being so close Times Square, I thought it'd have more tourists. I wouldn't say any dish stood out in particular, but this is a good place for hearty Mexican food at a decent price.
google avatar

Ciara M.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place as one of the first suggestions and trusted that it had good reviews. The food was AMAZING!! Many times American Mexican restaurants lack flavor but that was not the case here. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and shrimp tacos and were blown away. Definitely give this place a try if you're in Times Square or nearby!
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
I can't believe this place isn't mobbed! I guess New Yorkers haven't discovered Chicago's Rick Bayless' outpost here yet. My wife and I split two tortas- the carne asada and the eggplant milanesa. Both were incredibly flavorful, but not crazy spicy. For Times Square, it's a fantastic bargain!
google avatar

Ulrike W.

Yelp
I'm s so glad they opened this location, it's very close to my job! I ordered for delivery, so I can't comment on the service or atmosphere, but knowing that it is a restaurant by Rick Bayless,I feel confident, it's very good. The food was really good, with little twists, will order again!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I found myself in Times Square with a challenge to find a decent, non-national chain for dinner. Tortazo seemed promising with its cooking show history but it left some to be desired. The menu is big and I decided to go for the smoked salmon ceviche tostadas and started with guac. The guac was a bit plain without the usual fixings but the chips were hot and delicious. I asked for extra chips for the leftover guac and I sadly got charged for a whole order of chips and salsa (one of the smoked salsas was terrific however). The salmon was pretty good but a little forgettable. The happy hour deal of snacks being half off made the meal worth it, but I was a bit turned off by the touristy atmosphere and empty tables on a Friday evening. As for an affordable, standalone spot in Times Square, this might be your best bet, but venture elsewhere for a less suburban feel.
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
I was craving tortas, and ordered the carne asada torta, which had a lot of flavor, but could've used more meat. The Cubano torta was pretty good, but not my favorite between the two. The food came within an hour of ordering, which was perfect. I don't know if I would be ordering again unless they promise to put más carne in the torta . Otherwise, definitely recommend if you're looking for a quick lunch.
google avatar

Arturo C.

Yelp
From a Mexican visiting New York, this place did not disappoint. We had the flautas, mushroom tacos and carnitas tacos. All of them delicious...every bite was savory.
google avatar

Linnea H.

Yelp
We had great service from Makeila and enjoyed an early dinner here on a Saturday evening. The menu features mostly elevated handheld Mexican food, like tacos, tortas, and tostadas. The churros at the end were my favorite. Be sure to get the pistachio churros!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Been to this place several times since they opened and the food is always great, the service is always great, and the staff is really friendly. I've had a mushroom quesadilla, chicken quesadilla, and a few others, all delicious and a perfect balance of innovation and tradition.

Luz T.

Yelp
Love love love this place, I've only gone once, but I WILL be going again. Great drinks, and such good food. Amazing, friendly staff. And the inside gives off a chill/casual vibe.
google avatar

Seema S.

Yelp
Pretty good Mexican food. I've tried several things as a vegetarian. The potato-poblano flautas was very good and one of my favorites, the Tortazo salad and eggplant Milanese sandwiches are also my go-tos, very tasty and fresh. I recently tried the heirloom tomato sandwich, I wanted to like it but it was a little bland for me, same thing as the refried beans. The churros were pleasantly surprising. I would avoid the esquites or maybe I need to give them another shot - ordered to go and they were completely soupy, basically corn in a Mayo soup.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Good atmosphere and ambiance. Food was really good and service was excellent. The churros were a great way to wrap up dinner.

JR G.

Yelp
This is the worst torta I ever had for 2 tortas was 40 bucks the asada torta had like 3 three pieces of meat, and each side of torta. It was more veggies than anything else in order the chicken milanesa torta, and there was like a chicken tender torta. They're lucky that I had to take our order because if I would've been in the restaurant, I would've told him take that back and never pay for it. Worst food ever.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Had higher hopes for a Rick Bayless experience. I absolutely LOVE Frontera Grill in Chicago so I was excited for this place. Ambience was a nice escape from the Times Square chaos. Food was good, but extremely salty and I LOVE SALT so that's saying a lot. Flavors were good but execution could be better. Felt like maybe the food was sitting in the kitchen for a bit before served so things like the tortilla on the tacos were just soggy and lukewarm. Most of all, the service was mediocre which isn't surprising for a Times Square restaurant. Everyone was perfectly nice but they seemed stressed out by a party of 5 on a Sunday night without a reservation when the place was not even close to full, nor did it get much more full. If you look stressed, your customers are gonna be stressed and uncomfortable so not a great first impression. Not enough servers. It looked like there was only one! Slowwww wait staff and bar staff (altho the margaritas were excellent; well balanced and fresh!) Not necessarily compelled or rushed to go back but happy to know there's at least a good margarita place with decent snacks! But I do think standards could be higher here at this location!

Erika V.

Yelp
I had high expectations considering it's a Rick Bayless restaurant, but it fell short of the mark. The tortilla soup broth was too rich and heavy on the seasoning. The chipotle spread on the cuban torta had a strong horseradish/wasabi flavor that did not play well with the other ingredients. The asada torta was good but small for the price. The churros were skinny, kind of hard and minimally dressed although we did not get the naked ones. Lastly, the hot chocolate was too thick and very small serving for the price. Good service, but I would not go back.

Jim P.

Yelp
$28 dollars for 1 soup and chips & guac 1 TORTILLA SOUP chipotle chicken $12.65 1 CHIPS & GUACAMOLE - ALMOST NAKED $13.80 Items subtotal $26.45 Sales tax $2.35 Adjusted total $28.80 The soup was delicious and it's tough to find tortilla soup in Times Square. The chips were good, but the guacamole was just ok - it was no better or worse than what you can get at Dos Toros, but it was indeed a HELL OF LOT MORE EXPENSIVE. I ordered to go, and the food was packed well (soup had an extra bit of plastic wrap to secure the soup inside the container). I'll go back, I do want to try one of the sandwiches, but not in the near future.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Excellent food for a reasonable price (NYC prices) and the service was 12/10. Great spot for first date - great ambiance & good music (low enough to hear what people are saying but loud enough to vibe)

Heather F.

Yelp
Such a great vibe and the art is beautiful. Our food was delicious we had brunch and had the cornmeal pancakes and the carnitas hash and some pistachio churros that were amazing. Service was fast and very kind!

Roy W.

Yelp
This is a nice restaurant but the food is way overpriced. I wouldn't mind if the proportions we decent but I can get full for far less $$$ at Chipotle.

Niki W.

Yelp
This place is fun!! And the food is delicious!! Well worth the trip in! We even ordered more to take back to our hotel room for later. Everything was super clean and the staff was wonderful!
