My lovely wife and I have wanted to try out Torteria San Lenchito for quite awhile, as we have tried to go two previous times but they were closed already. Yesterday we finally made it in for a casual dinner. Our table was positioned right by their entrance. Despite its obscure location on Drake just north of Lawrence, they seemed to be doing some decent takeout business, along with a handful of dine-in folks.
We start with complimentary chips and beans, and little cups of spicy salsa. We received glasses of water initially, but it was very tough to get a refill. This lackadaisical level of service continued throughout our meal, with the young man taking our order acting particularly indifferent to us. We also just went to the register to pay up and ask for a to-go container, as we were not presented with a check.
Now on to our actual meal. Although their specialty is the tortas as indicated by the name, I ordered the cochinita pibil dinner while my love went with the steak burrito dinner. The meat was quite zingy for the first few bites, but my taste buds acclimated to the food and I actually finished my plate. My complete meal included corn tortillas, picked onions, rice and beans, a nice slab of cactus, and salad. My love was very happy with her burrito, served with a dish of rice and beans.
