The 22 Best Sandwich Places In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Chicago has a ton of Mexican restaurants, so at any given moment you’re just a short walk away from a torta. But Torteria San Lenchito in Albany Park might be the most prolific torta-maker in the city. This small spot has 26 different types, with a framed photo of each one on the wall. There’s no such thing as a bad choice here—from simpler tortas like al pastor or carne asada, to the San Lenchito: slow-roasted pork, ham, poblano peppers, onions, and melty American cheese." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor, nick allen

The Best Restaurants In Albany Park

"While the large number of Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood means that tortas are everywhere, the best ones are at Torteria San Lenchito. With over 26 different versions to choose from (and an impressive photo for each on their wall), deciding what to order can be daunting. But a torta at this tiny torteria comes with the assurance that everything is delicious. Stay simple with a single filling like al pastor or carne asada, or go all out with their signature San Lenchito: slow-roasted pork, ham, poblano peppers, onions, and melty American cheese." - john ringor, adrian kane

Google
Has been consistently solid. I think it's a Family biz, in this case, that's a good thing; it feels like everyone cares about being the best because they all have a stake in San Lanchito's success. This would be a good place to order from for friends from out of town. It's Chicagoey and not the usual.

Google
For the price, the food is really good and the amount of food is very generous. The torta is very good, especially the bread. The bread is my favorite I’ve had in a torta though I think the asada could have a bit more flavor. Overall I rate the torta a 4/5 but the overall experience a 5/5 especially for the price. Also the beans and rice are amazing, probably the best I’ve had.

Estephani Paredes

Google
The food for the price was astonishing. The beans were excellent my five year you doesn't like beans ate my whole side hehehe. The cheeseburger was huge the tortas or sandwiches were satisfying However there was a wait on the food but it was completely worth it! I advice to call ahead so when you come in the food is ready! Other then that it's the perfect place to eat cubanas order it with rice and beans totally recommend it 100%!

Google
Food was phenomenal, we got the carne en su jugo and three tortas everything was very good and well made, fresh meats and bread. Service was a little spotty, server wasn't too attentive and when we were checking out they ran my friends card and he was charged three times (which they refunded so we'll see) aside from that I'll definitely be coming back.

Google
It's a hole in the wall Mexican sandwich place. Are you looking for a torta? They have tortas. They also have burritos, quesadillas, and tacos which are; in my opinion, also Mexican sandwiches. Are you wondering if it's good? It's good. Is it the best sandwich you're ever going to have? Will this sandwich change your life? I wouldn't go that far but it's good, the price is right, the people are friendly, and it's fast.

Google
Amazing food and quality. Didn’t expect this place to be that good but it really is. The people are super nice, great service, and food comes out fast. Would highly recommend if you’re in the area. For some reason the beans were the best beans I’ve had in while. I don’t make reviews at all but this place definitely deserved it!

Google
This place is life-changing - super nice staff, huge portions and incredible quality for the price. They made the best pollo en mole (mole chicken) torta I've ever eaten. The torta cubana was also fantastic. Definitely also try the cafe de olla (sweet cinnamon coffee). We will be back many times.

Google
Excellent cemitas, we had a carnitas and veggie one and loved both. Friendly and helpful staff. Huge menu with lots of specialty options, very tasty homemade food, everything made to order. Hidden gem in Albany Park.

Yelp
My lovely wife and I have wanted to try out Torteria San Lenchito for quite awhile, as we have tried to go two previous times but they were closed already. Yesterday we finally made it in for a casual dinner. Our table was positioned right by their entrance. Despite its obscure location on Drake just north of Lawrence, they seemed to be doing some decent takeout business, along with a handful of dine-in folks. We start with complimentary chips and beans, and little cups of spicy salsa. We received glasses of water initially, but it was very tough to get a refill. This lackadaisical level of service continued throughout our meal, with the young man taking our order acting particularly indifferent to us. We also just went to the register to pay up and ask for a to-go container, as we were not presented with a check. Now on to our actual meal. Although their specialty is the tortas as indicated by the name, I ordered the cochinita pibil dinner while my love went with the steak burrito dinner. The meat was quite zingy for the first few bites, but my taste buds acclimated to the food and I actually finished my plate. My complete meal included corn tortillas, picked onions, rice and beans, a nice slab of cactus, and salad. My love was very happy with her burrito, served with a dish of rice and beans.

Yelp
Always Awesome. A good place to get food for out of town visitors seeking something special from Chicago.

Yelp
This is a small mom and pop place. The sandwich was huge so easily shareable especially with the fries. I preferred the combo protein sandwich than the carne asada. There are isn't much seating inside but there are several tables. It's about $15 a torta so don't expect a bargain. As a side note, this place is right across the street from a local supermarket which you can park at if you can't find street parking. I grew up in this neighborhood in the 70's and 80's. So much has changed since then.

Yelp
Small torta shop with many options. Service was great. Our waitress was very nice. Free chips with beans. Our food came out pretty quick. Huge portions. One torta can really feed two. Great prices as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes. Yes. And yes. Come here hungry! Their cafe de olla is also good. Huge portions and quick service.

Arturo R.

Yelp
Food taste amazing and service is quick and they are kind favorite new spot for Mexican food.

Yelp
Hidden gem - the tortas are amazing!! We tried both the steak and chicken Milanese and both were packed full of flavor.

Yelp
Torteria san lenchito sooo many options I been here many times for lunch with great friends this time I was disappointed because I ordered a semita poblana The only thing authentic is the bread bun with sesame seeds on top, but the ingredients are not really Cemita poblana soupost to be Milaneza, ham ,avocado ,Chipotle pepoers, papalo, and lots of queso Oaxaca string cheese This one was milaneza lettuce, tomato Was ok but not the original cemita anyways, torteria san lenchito is still my favorite torteria. See you soon again

Yelp
I came here last night, and the employees were super kind and helpful. The food was amazing, and I'll definitely be coming back for sure. They have tons of options to choose from, and what I bought was good. The horchata was also delicious. I didn't sit and eat there because it's a little small. Their salsa verde is also very good!!!!!

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and it always hits the spot! Really tasty, fresh, and delicious. Staff is very friendly and place is clean. I tried the chicken fajitas and was pleasantly surprised at the portion. Highly recommend this hidden gem!

Yelp
Absolute neighborhood gem! Great food and service. Huge portions too!!! One of my go to lunch spots for sure.

Yelp
Super tasty and authentic food. We were welcomed with fresh nacho chips and beans. Our al pastor tacos and torta were terrific. Big portions for an affordable price. The owners are very kind and friendly, and we are happy to support a small and nice family business.

Yelp
Everytime I come here I say WOW... And the next visit I'm even more impressed. The food here ROCKS. The bread is out of this world, super fresh ingredients, clean and the nicest people! I've had several menu items and honestly they are all delicious! The fries here are delicious and always cooked perfect. One of Chicago's best IMO!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered through Grubhub. Food was delicious. I ordered steak torta meal and chicken quesadilla both excellent.

Yelp
This spot is actually in our neighborhood that we were able to walk into and be seated right away. The staff was so friendly and once they sat us down gave us chips and beans which were really good. They have an amazing selection of tortas. I got a veggie torta and my partner got a bbq torta. Overall the food was good but it was missing some seasoning. Overall I think the food was decent and definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Wow, this place is amazing! Me and my fiancé were craving Mexican food and we found this spot on Yelp. There is a reason why this is rated 5 stars!!! The food here is amazing! We ordered the chicken mole, the cemita poblano, and an al pastor taco and every singe item was so delicious. We also got nacho chips with beans and salsa while we waited for the food to cook. I've been to so many Mexican food spots and this one is definitely at the top of my list. I can't believe I haven't come across this place sooner. The owners Virginio and Alicia were so kind as well. Thank you for a great experience and great food, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Really good food. Saw reviews on Yelp . They start you off with a bowl of lentil soup and chips with the most delicious refried beans. I had a hibiscus tea, excellent . We shared three tortas. 1. Mole n chicken with lettuce tomato 2 three meat combo 3. Chicharrones and pork My favorite was number three Perfect ratio. I ordered refried beans and rice to go. It was that good. Sides torta came with Fries Salad Rice and beans Try this won't disappoint.

Yelp
I had me a hankerin fer sum Mexican food. Eye tuk a quick gander tru Yelp at sum of da choices fer Mexican food and found Torteria San Lenchito (4 1/2 stars) @ 4810 N Drake jest north of Lawerence Ave. Like most Mexican restaurants they started out w/chips & salsa. The chips had refried beans on top. They also gave a small complimentary soup w/lentils, carrots & celery (meh). I had a hankerin for the Chilaquiles that came, w/onions, queso fresco cheese, a big old blob of sour cream & a fried egg over easy on top of the tortillas smothered in spicy green salsa. The egg was cooked over easy the way I like it w/a nice runny egg yolk. I asked for steak ($2.00 extra). The steak was thin sliced like a piece of bacon. This dish came w/beans, rice and a salad w/iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber & avocado. Just a warning this dish is ginormous. I ended up taking over half of it home to be consumed at a later date. The food was pretty good, but I didn't feel that it was 4 1/2 star worthy. The service was excellent. Torteria also has a huge selection of tortas and other Mexican cuisine.

Yelp
Off the beaten path, but worth making a destination. Everything was fresh and super flavorful. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Best tortas in this area. So many to choose from! I always eat there when I'm near Lawrence
google avatar

Emil P.

Yelp
Same quality and hospitality, definitely hidden gem for good authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Claudy C.

Yelp
I want to say I continue to love this place but it's sorta going downhill. The last few orders, I've received old soggy brown fries with my burger or torta. The burger patty was so salty and the fries lacked salt. I don't know what's going on here but I hope they begin to work on their food or I'm not going to order from here again.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Cemitas Poblanas #26 were so good! We got carnitas and a veggie one, both were huge and tasty. Portions are generous here. Everything is made to order and comes out quickly. It's a very small and humble place with lots of plants in the front windows. Easy to miss if just driving by, it's a little north of the corner. Great place that's a hidden gem in Albany Park!
google avatar

Loyda V.

Yelp
It's a small hole in the wall. The staff is very attentive. Food was very good. Large portions. Amazing price. It's not on the main street so it's easy to miss. Totally worth going though.
google avatar

Yelp
Mmmm yame this please is unbelievable good service is is always good service I would recommend this please to everyone I know thanks Russ

Yelp
After a recommendation to try San Lenchito for their tortas it was a must try. Right off Lawrence ave and Drake(and not Toronto very own but Chicagos drake) a hidden gem in Albany Park honestly. I Myself ordered the Campechana torta and my gf the popular Cuban torta. To begin the tortilla chips they bring to your table are different from your usual restaurant, they have a layer of warm frijoles(pinto beans) on top. Which made it quite tasty honestly. Once our tortas came out they looked and smelled delicious and that's exactly what they tasted like! So fresh and delicious!! I highly recommend this gem, also as soon as you walk in you're welcomed by the restaurant staff they are so warm and welcoming. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did!!!

Yelp
Came on Saturday afternoon. Huge breaded chicken tortas, mom liked the breaded steak sandwich. Huge taco salad. Friendly family owned place. Will come back!

google avatar

Kiersten S.

Yelp
This place is the best. Food is always delicious and authentic. Seriously so good. The family that owns the restaurant is so kind and wonderful. This place is the best.
google avatar

Nguyen T.

Yelp
Came here because all of the reviews rave about the tortas. This place is straight up fantastic!! The staff was friendly, attentive, and the tortas were top notch. I ordered a Campechana which is their most popular torta. A sandwich with steak, chicken, and al pastor (oh my!) as meat filling. You have a choice of sides and I opted for the rice and beans. You get complimentary chips with a layer of beans, salsa, and a lentil soup as a starter. Such a nice touch! And of course no Mexican meal is complete without horchata (around $3). Overall, a really good experience. A little out of the way for me or else it would likely be a go-to spot..
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
This place has amazing sandwiches. Trust me. Just go. I've tried 6 of their sandwiches so far and they were all really good. The Juaritos slushie is a bit much.

Christopher K.

Yelp
Small family owned business. Friendly owner and great food. I would definitely recommend this spot.

Yelp
Just moved to Albany Park this summer, but haven't had a lot of time to explore the restaurant options. It's a cool fall day today, and everything about it said "tortas" to me! I dropped in to check out this little place, and all the reviews are spot-on. It's close and cozy inside and exceptionally tidy from what I can see. My server was sweet and fast, and the chef did a great job with my giant sandwich! I heard the sizzle on the flat top as every ingredient was prepared. I got the chicken mole (love love mole) with fries and a bottle of Coke. The chips they give you as a little appetizer came with refried beans on top AND a little cup of bean ... soup? I don't know if I was supposed to eat that bowl of beans with a spoon, but it came with one so I did. The homemade salsas were excellent on top of the crispy, freshly fried chips. The torta was enormous (I could barely finish half) and amazing. I'd never had a torta with mayo on it, and it wasn't too much - just added a nice richness. Chicken mole is one of my favorite things, and this had a great flavor. Not too saucy to eat, and perfect with little drips of red salsa. I will be back!! Winter is long and cold here and I need mole to keep me going!!
google avatar

Karl V.

Yelp
had the HUGE chicken torta Milanesa with PERFECT fries. So good. Big enough for 2 people really. Love the vibe at this cute, clean little family run Torteria. It deserves all the praise it's had on Yelp! Will definitely be back to try the rest of the tortas
google avatar

Viviana N.

Yelp
google avatar

Cara Haren G.

Yelp
I really loved this place that is highly recommended and for the family the space of the place is the best!!!
google avatar

Sue M.

Yelp
This place is well deserving of nothing but 5 star reviews. They have over 20 different torta sandwiches to serve! I ordered the Milanesa Pollo (breaded chicken) torta. It was amazing! It came with free soup (delicious) and chips. So much food for such a great price. I'll definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Fernando N.

Yelp
So living in the Hispanic area of Chicago there are tons of Mexican food options. This was the first place that I've been to that's provided an overall excellent experience. The staff was fast and friendly. I ordered a burrito with steak and fries. The fries were fresh and hot and the steak burrito has good flavor. One of my biggest observations is the temperature of the room. Most Mexican restaurants I go to are hot and sticky. This place was definitely comfortable. I'll be back.
google avatar

Lia H.

Yelp
Torteria San Lenchito has a wonderful variety of tortas. I had the campechana, which comes with steak, spicy pork (pastor), and Chicken. I also had the chilaquiles torta with the red sauce. All tortas come with beans, lettuce, tomato, and onion. I really recommend this torta. They're not overwhelming and the bread is toasted just enough to have a nice crunch. After putting in our order, the waitress brought us a small vegetable soup. Very tasty and a nice way to start the meal. I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Korina L.

Yelp
The tacos de asada and torta de milanesa de pollo were delicious. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Brett J.

Yelp
I'm so lucky Torteria San Lenchito is near my apartment. The food is absolutely AMAZING. Everything I've had is better than most any other Mexican restaurant I've been to in the whole city, and I've eaten a lot of Mexican food! The enchiladas are some of the best I've had. I've ordered both he cheese and the chicken. Last visit I ordered the campechana torta. Excellent. Filling and every single bite was great. They also have a great milanese de pollo and the steak torta is also great. Service is always friendly. I ordered for curbside pickup last week. The food was ready when they said it would be. A great experience each time I come here.

Chris F.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos around. Staff is super nice and always helpful. Worth the trip!
google avatar

Jacob J.

Yelp
Imagine applying burrito contents into a pressed sandwich. Refried beans & mayo on a sandwich... Not my jam. My Mexican friends say this is the way a true torta is created. In this case, perhaps I'm just a boring American. Not quite a hole-in-the-wall. It's a tiny joint with service aimed to please. Costs are minimal and the menu is expansive. Side note: They serve a breakfast burrito which is California style, my favorite style. With chorizo, breakfast potatoes and avocado. (and NO refried beans.) This is one item I'll have to return to try.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
We ordered takeout and I thought the tortas were simply all right, but not as good as I'd hoped. After reading all the great reviews, we expected more. We were disappointed because my wife ordered hers without avocados and they still put them on the sandwich. She happens to be allergic to so needless to say she didn't eat her sandwich.
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
My favorite torta spot in the neighborhood. Service is always timely and food quality is consistent. I havent seen many places with torta filling selections such as these other than in Mexico city. My favorite is torta de milanesa with a side salad. Place is family owned so i always feel good about giving this business my money and always have a satisfying meal.

Yelp
Food quality is excellent. I had the torta Al pastor. My guest had steak tacos. The place is Tiny and off on the side street and easy to miss. It's not fancy in any way. But if you're in the neighborhood and need a good torta I would go to this place. While it's not fancy the place is very clean and the staff is very nice.
