We let our hunger get to the best of us. My boyfriend and I had spent nearly three hours at nearby Meow Wolf (which was amazeballz), and needed sustenance before our drive to Albuquerque. Since Tortilla Flats was nearby, we decided to dine here for a late lunch.
Tortilla Flats' space is huge. It reminds me of a locals-only diner, but with a New Mexican twist. Breakfast seemed to be their pride and joy here, with lots of plates coming outta the kitchen with breakfast items, smothered in chiles.
My boyfriend ordered the pork chop in green chiles while I went with the Tortilla Flats Breakfast Special, an open-faced tortilla with hashbrowns, meat, two eggs, cheese, smothered in red or green or both. For my entree, I ordered mine with ham, over-easy eggs (they said they couldn't do poached) and both red and green chiles. We also ordered a side of the sopapilla, which was the first time we had sopapillas, and was an item our server highly recommended we try.
The sopapillas came out first, and gotta say, I really was pleasantly surprised by them. They were sooo good and unlike a bread I've had before. The sopapillas are a fry bread, which has a pocket, so once you tear off a piece, there's a hollow center. Drizzle some honey per instructed by our server, and you have a wonderful dessert, especially since the sopapilla was so soft and warm! It was definitely one of the best foods I tried while in New Mexico.
However, I wish I could say the same for my entree. The Tortilla Flats Breakfast Special was lackluster. The tortilla was not as soft as I anticipated, so didn't eat most of it since the texture was on the stiffer side. The ham used were thin slices, like deli meat, which I wasn't expecting. I wish the pieces had been cubes of ham, which I believe would've been more consistent with the entree, since it was all mixed together with the hashbrowns and eggs. The chile sauces were the most disappointing. They were super bland, watered down, with no spice at all. It was very surprising and disappointing, since we were trying to get dishes that had the famous chiles New Mexico is known for. My boyfriend felt the same way about his entree.
Overall, it was hit and miss for us. We loved the sopapillas, and for a side of it, you get two, which was awesome! I'm still thinking about how delicious they were. But for the primary reason of why we visited Tortilla Flats, for some good, sold New Mexican cuisine - it sadly disappointed.
