ok here we go.. I rarely have time in my household to make myself breakfast..I mean let's face it. I have 2 kids, a hubs, who many times, acts as my 3rd child. So.. between cooking, cleaning, tending to 3 kids, and trying to find a moment of "mommy me" time.. screw making breakfast, or at least of those meals.. could be lunch sometimes. IT is much easier to grab something in the AM, not to mention, I love tacos.. and I love trying different ones.
After wanting to finally, hit up the Taco Durango truck I've seen so many times on the corner of Lamar and Parmer and finding out it inst there... ?? I immediately searched for something in close proximity. Here I am..
**Please NOTE***
This place is located directly behind the Jack in the Box on Braker Lane, just East of 35. You DO NOT have to go thru the apartment complex to get here, like Map Quest sent me.. ugggh... I was so uneasy with this.. anyhow. The place is all "yellowed" out.. you cant miss it for your life.. Dan B posted a pic of the front, go look...it still looks like that! There is store front parking, but be mindful when parking in front of the other businesses signs... they don't too terribly much like it!
When I walked in:
It was quiet. Only 2 tables occupied. Seemed roomy enough. There was a bowl of freshly fried chips and salsa to try, which I thought was pretty neato! The decor is not appealing in anyway, but makes for a very Authentic setting. The music was right in line... it was nice. Seemed very laid back. Definitely nothing fancy or to brag about.
I peeked at the menu, waited for someone to come, but no one did... I was Ok with that because being my first time, I was kind of enjoying checking everything out without being rushed... The girl finally came out and I ordered. I paid and I sat and waited.
And waited. ....And waited.....
So while I was "waiting" I noticed the machinery used for the tortilla making...man, they must make A LOT of freaking tortillas to have this.. pretty impressive.
I notice the lunch side of the menu as well, namely the Barbacoa with "no cow head" printed under it? Really? what is this I wonder? Keep looking around.
Saw the filled churros they offered, the salsa bar, some other things next to churros.. not sure what they were, but they looked good.. nice and "carby".
Peeked at the restrooms... YIKES.. hold it til you get home! For sure. I mean if you HAVE TO.. I suppose.. but I wouldn't.
Took a seat.. and waited some more.. wow. This is taking forever.
Finally, the girl from the kitchen brings out the food, now, I'm no expert, but I will tell you there was nobody in that store waiting on food before I got there. While I was there the table that was already seated and eating a man went back to the counter and ordered something to go.. 10 minutes after I was there another man came in and placed an order to go as well. It is truly mind blowing how long it takes for these "tacos" to come out...??
She hollered something in Spanish... I could not understand, sorry. Its hard. Be prepared. And HAVE YOUR RECEIPT.. she checks them.
I asked about the "no cow head" and she explained its brisket, not part of the head (which is typical Barbacoa) As I mentioned I would be back to try that.. she insisted I try a sample now.. well... SURE thank you so much! A bit dry alone, but on a taco..Im guessing just fine!
Overall experience:
Wait time was a little crazy, but the food was great. The tortillas are really really very delicious! Corn and flour both. The beans were good, the egg was good.. the salsa was fantastic, spicy, but boldly flavored and I was able to tolerate it. I enjoyed my breakfast enough to go back again. I want to to go back for lunch as well!
