"Tucked away in the outskirts of Beaverton, Toshi is a homey, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that serves an impressive spread of Japanese comfort dishes. Even though Toshi hasn’t garnered much media attention, it’s a well-known Japanese institution on the west side. The chirashi bowl here comes with a standard assortment of items such as salmon, tuna, shrimp, mackerel, and eel; however, it can be upgraded to a deluxe for some salmon roe and sea urchin." - Seiji Nanbu

Everything here tastes amazing! The sushi pieces are big and packed with fresh fish, with just the right amount of rice, definitely not overloaded. The croquettes were a standout too, super crispy on the outside and filled with smooth mashed potato patty inside. I also tried the morisoba and the gyu don, both were full of flavor and absolutely hit the spot. The don, in particular, was rich and satisfying. Service was prompt and really friendly, and the cozy, welcoming atmosphere made the experience even better. It feels like a truly authentic Japanese sushi spot. One of my new favorite places, I’m already looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu!

some may call this place a “hidden gem” (literally in a small, unassuming place in a strip mall) & I would certainly agree! this is one of my fav places in this area to get quality & delicious japanese food! being from hawaii, I feel like I’m pretty picky about where I go & this place has my japanese mother’s approval as well. if any of this means anything to you, I’d say it’s pretty well vetted lmao. I always recommend this place to people that want good quality asian food in (and around) portland, so make sure to go check them out!! — FOOD — their menu is EXTENSIVE & I love it!! so many options to choose from. they have a whole sushi menu, bentos, ramen, & a whole bunch of appetizers and entrees that are hard to find elsewhere! also make sure to look at their specials posted near the sushi bar! here’s what is featured in the reel: - chirashi bowl : super fresh with so much variety & the rice was perfectly seasoned! - miso salmon special : salmon was cooked to perfection - agedashi tofu : my family’s fav appetizer treat – fried, savory goodness! — MORE INFO — PARKING : strip mall has a big parking lot, lots of spaces. SEATING : not a ton of seats, but haven’t had trouble getting a table on a weekday. may need to make a reservation on the weekend. SERVICE : super sweet staff! AMBIANCE : the restaurant reminds me of small japanese restaurants in hawaii. super nostalgic & cozy!

Google
Japanese restaurant tucked in a strip mall with ample dining space that serves flavorful meals. Their ramen soup 🍲 is tasty and sushi 🍣 is as fresh as it gets. Good to try and the place won’t disappoint.

Google
If you love authentic Japanese food. You might find what you like. However, I think it’s overpriced. I spent $30+ for a Toshi Nabe that is supposed to come with scallop but I only find a mussel. It took a long time to cook somehow but I don’t feel I am getting what I paid for.

Google
Lovely little restaurant. Authentic Japanese serving very good home cooked fare. Sashimi is fresh and flavourful. Miso soup hot and tasty. Salted broiled mackerel fillet was cooked to perfection, with a crispy skin. I’d highly recommend this place.

If you’re looking for authentic Japanese cuisine on the west side, this little gem is for you. Located in the Baseline Center at the corner of SW 185th & W Baseline get there early because this restaurant is small and it fills up fast. Everything was on point from the service to dinner making the overall dining experience absolutely wonderful. So, if you’re ever in the area and lucky enough to get in, give this place a try and don’t forget to support small businesses!!! Service ✅Food✅Atmosphere✅Mahalo Toshi Restaurant! 🤙🏽

I ordered pot stickers and Gomoku Don. My husband ordered some sushi rolls and chicken curry. Everything was fantastic. The staff was very attentive. Not a long wait at all. Small seating area, best to get there as soon as they open to beat the dinner crowd. The soup and salad served with dinner was good too!

Matti Baltrusaitis

Google
The most authentic sushi spot in the Portland area. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but the tastes, atmosphere, energy take you to another country. I love the simplicity of this hidden gem. The homemade gyoza were huge and so tasty. The sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. Can’t wait to stop in again!

Ploy N.

Yelp
A lowkey homey Japanese spot serving authentic Japanese dishes. Their seafood was super fresh. All our rolls were delicious and packed with tasty seafood. I think their flavors were 10/10 and prices were great too. Four rolls were enough for two people. We got the Shrimp & Radish Sprouts, Tuna, Spicy Tuna, and Unakyu. We shared a Shio Hokke which was a perfectly grilled Atka Mackerel as an appetizer and it's soo succulent. Service was also attentive and sweet. Will definitely be back for more.

Yelp
A tucked away gem! Was craving curry tonight and googled for the nearest restaurant near me. So lucky to be close by because it tastes just like the curry I had when I used to live in Japan as a child.

Mary B.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! This restaurant has literally been on my doorstep for 20 years and I never went until today. Absolutely fresh delicious fish and an ambience very similar to the tiny restaurants I visited in Tokyo. and who could beat fresh fish from Tokyo's Toyosu market! This is a secret spot that only those in the know or in the neighborhood know about. I could not possibly begin to list all the good things on the menu but the sushi we ate and mussels were incredibly tasty. Meals come with miso soup and salad and the portions are perfect. As we left, we planned many more outings here to work our way through the menu. So good! Service was friendly and attentive.

Yelp
It's been years since I have been to this local favorite. Same hole in wall Japanese authentic small restaurant in a nondescript strip mall. The food is great, the service is average "family" help, acceptable. Will keep coming back for the food and small family feel and service, LOL

Nancy T.

Yelp
Nice little place in a strip mall with about 8 tables for 4 and done counter seats. Service was pretty quick and friendly. I had the Hamachi Kama (collarbone) and husband had the Toshi Gozen (house combo). Food was good quality, although my Kama was a little overcooked. I really liked the dressing on their salad. Not sure what was in it, but looked like some grated carrot?

Awmber M.

Yelp
High quality fish and service, cute little hole in the wall feel. But also feels like a neat real place you'd walk into in Japan that's been around forever. Sashimi was excellent.

Miki M.

Yelp
Toshi's is a tiny and unassuming restaurant in the strip mall near me and I've heard nothing but great reviews. It is Japanese owned and operated so I had high expectations. I had their take-out once a while ago but I honestly don't remember how the food was, so I was eager to try it again. They have quite an extensive menu, ranging from ramen to sushi to even Japanese-Chinese food (called Chuuka), which is a rare find. I ordered the Lunch Sushi Combination which comes with salad and miso soup. The salad was delicious. I love the carrot dressing they used, it seems homemade. The miso soup was good too, but I really enjoyed the sushi. All of the fish was fresh and the rice was well seasoned. I appreciate that they gave different nigiri besides salmon, since it's so common among sushi places here. It definitely added authenticity to their sushi craft. I would love to come back and try their other items!

Vy N.

Yelp
This place is my go to for authentic Japanese food. The food was delightfully and very quick service. It gets crowded during lunch time though, come a bit early or later for dinner. My favorite orders would be chirasi bowl, grilled yellowtail collar and new favorite that I would totally recommend is their udon - with fish based broth. You can order any protein listed on the menu for the udons.

Aiden L.

Yelp
I regret only now discovering such a delicious Japanese restaurant in Portland. Japanese restaurants are my favorite, and this place might just become my go-to spot. You can enjoy delicious and fresh sushi and Japanese dishes here. The staff, of course, are friendly. Free parking.

Oscar E.

Yelp
Easily my favorite sushi in the Greater PDX. Such care in preparation, outstanding quality.

Zack F.

Yelp
I had the 7-piece ngiri lunch special and was not disappointed. If you are looking for high-quality sushi at a reasonable price in Hillsboro this is the place.

Mia H.

Yelp
After seeing a Tiktok online, I really wanted to try this spot out despite being pretty far out (in comparison to many places I typically go to in Portland area). Located in a plaza, there's plenty of parking and it may be easy to miss this small Japanese spot. Walking into the shop, it's very cozy and you're greeted by very kind Japanese staff. The service the entire time was so kind and fairly fast. Their menu is fairly big for a Japanese spot and has so many dishes you typically don't see. After ordering, we received complimentary salad and miso soup, which were great! The miso soup was pretty standard, but the egg dressing on the salad was so different to anything I've had and very delicious. The chicken karaage we ordered was so crispy and the portion was fairly generous. The sushi was also so fresh, thick cuts, and delicious. Although we were a bit disappointed that there was no uni the day we went, everything else was delicious (the o-toro was so so fatty, if you're into that!). Although it is a bit far for me to go back again, I do think it's pretty good and would recommend to others.

Kristen D.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese! The nicest staff, who help you choose what you want and they are so fast! It a small shop so quaint inside that is intimate and makes you feel that you are back in Japan! I got the scallops, tempura, fried squid, and hands down my favorite salmon skin hand rolls I have ever had!!! This place is amazing and I do not know why I just found out about it recently, I would drive 45 minutes, and I would wait in line, and I would eat here at least once a week!

Carmela G.

Yelp
If you're looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant, this is it! Tip: always order their agedashi tofu as your appetizer, it's the best I've had. I don't recommend their sukiyaki beef. Everything else is great! Their fish is always fresh.

Evan P.

Yelp
I normally love small cozy lowkey spots like this, but the food was simply not good. The service was fine, no issues there. As much as I wanted to love this place, the quality of the fish was simply poor and did not taste good.. I want small places like this to thrive, but the quality did not even meet average conveyor belt sushi standards. I think Toshi's might benefit from refining the menu down to a few really quality dishes, and investing in good quality ingredients. Their menu is large, but quality was not there... I simply cannot recommend.

Iris L.

Yelp
Pricing is very affordable and quality is good. only one sushi chef so be patient with your orders but it came our quickly if you go right when they're open. Tried both calamari and baby octopus, recommend the squid legs more as it has lesser batter and still makes it tasty and crunchy without too much grease. Baby octopus was more battered than just fried itself.' Curry katsu was good and more sweet taste than expected, I did explain to my partner that different origins of curry have distinctive taste and spices they used and recipe varies too. there's another menu that had many many many items and seemed very traditional authentic dishes. will try again if in the area Excellent customer service, very courteous

Johnny B.

Yelp
Seating: limited. Decor: authentic Japanese style Service: just right Taste of food: close to authentic. Sushi better elsewhere. Tempura tasty. Miso soup lacking ingredients. Price: pretty expensive for what you get. Overall experience: good but we have other places that are favorites.

Yan W.

Yelp
初めて行きました。First time going...? If anything, I may have went when I was a tiny kid but have no memory of it. Environment: Very small but it feels like a local Japanese place in Japan! It has been here for many years so it does have that old feeling but there's lots of great things to see such as Japanese decorations and all the specials for the day :) Staff: quick and friendly! I tried to practice my Japanese but they used English haha. I guess I still have lots to learn :) Food (take outs): 1. Ramen combo: $17.95. We ordered a side of california rolls. The ramen noodles were also with the soup. I was worried that the noodles would get mushy being in the soup so we ate that as soon as we could. Luckily, it was still bouncy and the texture of it was still really good. The soup base was also delicious and it was piping hot! There were pieces of nori, one slice of char siu, and some bamboo shoots. It was very delicious and amazing. There were 6 pieces of rolls and I'm not sure if the crab part was artificial or not. The reason is that it didn't look like the typical imitation crabs but it also didn't have fresh crab flavor. Haha. Either way, it was still good but nothing outstanding. 2. We also got the shake-don $24.95. It had some seaweed salad, seaweed, ginger, wasabi, and other little greens. Oh, and a fresh slice of lemon! There were at least 11 slices of raw salmon that was fairly good in size. It was fresh and lovely. The rice was also very good, a bit of a chewiness but not hard. It was really nice and wish I had more salmon because I haven't had good salmon in awhile. Very pleased with today's meal. Yes, the prices may seem to be a tad bit more expensive than other places but it's really good quality and quantity. So come and try it out! They open everyday except Sundays starting at 11:30am.

SA N.

Yelp
Authentic sushi. I recommend their tempura and agedashi tofu too. They have an extensive menu with foods you don't see in other Japanese restaurants in the states like Japanese style "Chinese" dishes. It's a bit pricey but totally worth it. Also love the 80s/90s J-POP they are always playing. The seats are limited so we usually try to get there by 5pm.

Nicol L.

Yelp
We headed to this hole in the wall restaurant after a trip to Goodwill. It's located in a plaza with plenty of parking. I was so impressed with the tuna straight from Tsukiji Market in Tokyo! The fish was perfect and tasted so fresh. The menu is in Japanese so you know it's authentic. The tempura was so crispy and I loved the assortment of different tempura. The curry udon was so flavorful. Service was quick, attentive, and kind. Loved the atmosphere.

Alex N.

Yelp
I love this place coming from HI this is probably the best mid tier sushi restaurant I can get. Fish itself was fresh the tempura was crispy and the vibe was nice to grab drinks and chat with friends. It's a small family shop but they work hella fast. Always coming back

Kevin T.

Yelp
Mmmm yes it was realy scrumptious. Food was realy delicious & sashimi tasted yes. Mmm

Mila L.

Yelp
Authentic delicious fresh sushi and other amazing dishes best was the onigiri I was so excited to eat a rice ball for the first time and was not disappointed

Monalisa H.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese restaurants in Beaverton Sushi and Sashimi are delicious, and the service is excellent! It reminds me of when I visited Japan, Shibuya. Toshi has the vibe. No need to make a reservation is a good thing in this place. Next time we will come back to try their lunch set menu. Thanks, Toshi

Caleb T.

Yelp
I've heard Toshi's be held in high esteem by foodies in town, but i found it to be a middling experience for its price point. Though the skill and preparation of the food is unmatched, I found the eating experience to be lacking. The interior feels rather crowded, and service came slower. Granted, it is a very popular spot. The sushi is expertly prepared, but came out much colder than anticipated. I've been told the restaurant wasn't always this way, and from what I can tell, seating / service demands for this restaurant have progressively raised- especially after covid. I'm willing to take a second chance on Toshi's for the sake of the chef's expertise- but it seems like other elements are holding it back.

Khin K.

Yelp
I went to this place for the first time in Aug 2023 and it was awesome. Price is great, fish is fresh and such a nice cozy restaurant. Came back again in Mar 2024, the price for the same item is almost 140% increased. I also noticed they put less expensive fish. I can understand the price increased with inflation and everything but not happy with food quality during the second time. I wish they kept their quality consistent.

Megan Y.

Yelp
This is probably the best place to get sushi in the Hillboro/Beaverton area. The quality of the sushi can't be matched. I usually order hamachi or tuna dishes so I can't speak to the salmon options, but the spicy tuna hand roll is one of my favorite things on the menu. They also have a huge menu of other Japanese dishes, which makes it easy for everyone to find something they like even if it's not sushi. I really enjoy dining in here, but it's a tiny restaurant with maybe about 10 tables that fit 2 to 4 people. Sometimes I'll order takeout, but you don't get the complimentary miso soup and house salad that comes with a dine-in meal. The salad here is one of my favorite items because the house dressing that they use is sooo good! I'm not sure what it is, but I would buy it immediately if they bottled it. If you're craving sushi or Japanese food in general, Toshi's is the best!

foodfoodfood f.

Yelp
Worth the drive from Portland when you need that authentic sushi fix and there's a two-week wait to get into Kaede. While it is not inexpensive, with many rolls around nine bucks, It is definitely a quality place. It was terrific from the miso soup on. We ordered some $24 sushi, lunch specials, yakitori, and random assorted nigiri. There were also some very appealing sounding cooked lunch specials like miso salmon. I will definitely go back.

Jeffry L.

Yelp
Awesome small shop. You would never guess how good this place is based on location driving by the strip mall. 27 seats by my count. 5 star service, very fast & friendly. The workers were going hard and fast. Perfect for a quick sit down sushi lunch. 5 star quality of ingredients as well. Presentation was probably 3 stars (which I don't care about), some of the sashimi was a bit odd shaped, but who cares. I didn't order any nigiri and just one roll, but will definitely do so next time. Ate lunch with my picky wife, so ordered based on her wants. The uni was the daily special and the best I've had. Highly suggest.

Jo S.

Yelp
Adorable little restaurant. Ordered food to go and it was delicious. They have several vegetarian options which was so nice. We got a few vegetarian sushi rolls and some vegetable noodles. Highly recommend both.

Steve M.

Yelp
Phenomenal sushi. Best I've had in a long while. Good service. Been back for return visit. Will go back again.

John C.

Yelp
A hidden gem in plain sight. I've always came by for the pho in this complex and never thought to look at anything else except Sesame Donuts after the meal. But when the wifey had a sushi craving looked up on yelp and decided to try this spot. We ordered: Deep fried tofu sauce on the side (I like to dip it when it is crispy) Karaage batter was more on the soft and chew side but still was good. California roll add salmon on top. Tempura Udon with tempura on the side (again I like deep fried to be crispy and not swimming soggy in the broth) Salmon teriyaki bento. The salmon tasted fresh and a nice balanced teriyaki sauce. The portions were on the smaller side but that's how authentic Japanese food comes.

Janice M.

Yelp
I have been an avid fan of this place since I moved here in'17. After last night I don't think I will be back. We came in hungry and ready for some food. It was busy. We were sat. Weirdly no one came to greet us. Then about 10 minutes later, a server came to our table and said that we would have to relinquish our table, because someone had previously had a reservation and they didn't have a table for them. (Meanwhile others were sat.) He told us we would have to wait at least another 30 minutes. Not only were we humiliated but it was with no remorse. No apology no care no customer service. I am not only shocked but saddened that our special night was ruined. Maybe learning some customer service skills would be great.

Patrick W.

Yelp
Toshi's continues to be the West side/Aloha gem now that it's back open. Same decor, same owner feverishly working hard to give you fresh, authentically sliced and well prepared sushi and sashimi cuisine. Prices have skyrocketed, but the quality and portions are the same. This is not Toshi's fault, inflation and fresh seafood is just way more now. Personally I greatly appreciate the strive for consistency and will gladly pay over literally razor thin slices of fish over massive amounts of rice you now see at conveyor belt sushi joints trying to keep prices steady. On a Saturday night even showing up 10min after they open, be prepared for 40+ minutes wait for food to actually come (post salad and soup). They have to keep staff at a minimum to survive, so be patient, you're getting a master preparing your sushi. In addition, the much larger volume of ToGo orders helps their business but makes it longer to wait for dine-in. It hurts the pocket book more now but it immensely pleasures the palette still.

Brandilyn T.

Yelp
If anyone asks me for a recommendation on where to get sushi I tell them this place. I love the comforting atmosphere here. This restaurant can be really quiet or really loud depending on who's dining. It's very small so I wouldn't recommend a large group to dine here. I love that they say where they got their fish and what is fresh that day/week. The portions here are great too! Everyone here are very kind, especially this one lady who serves. She's super sweet and talks with her customers. Their menu offers so many of my favorite Japanese foods so I don't think I'll ever get tired of this place. If you're craving sushi or other Japanese foods give this place

Angeline P.

Yelp
I have lived in Beaverton for most of my life but had never tried this place (mostly because of the area that it is in), but I am so glad that I finally did! It's definitely a small hole in the wall type of restaurant, but that makes it feel much more authentic and special. I immediately felt like I was transported to Japan when I walked in. I ordered the regular sushi combo, which came with soup, salad, several nigiri pieces , and a tuna roll. This was a really good deal for the amount of food that it came with. The fish tasted fresh and my favorites were the hamachi and the crab salad. The sushi wasn't crazy spectacular, but the combination of the ambiance, sushi chef, and customer service really made the dining experience worth it. Will definitely be back!

Kevin N.

Yelp
Friendly staff, but unfortunately the chicken katsu was overcooked and dry. It was very flavorful, and the katsu sauce was thick and yummy, and the chicken was crispy, but only if it wasn't overcooked, it would be 5 stars. I'm not going to be put 1 stars since it is a sushi place, and maybe it was my fault buying fried chicken at a sushi place but idk, still not good to surve chicken dry as the desert. Personally I wouldn't try it again, but I probably would go for sushi, because, well, you can't really mess up raw fish haha.

Lisa H.

Yelp
One of my friends recommended that I come here since the sushi is prepared by a master sushi chef. It's a small and cozy restaurant with both tables and counter seating. Decided to try a bunch of different dishes and they were all delicious!!! Squid salad: much better than I thought - lots of squid covered in a light sauce. Tamago, Inari, Unagi, Spicy Hotate Hand Roll: All tasty and the tamago was noticeably higher quality than the tamago made in other sushi places. Onigiri: the onigiri here are huge. You can order 2 and it could be your whole meal. My fav was the bonito flake one. Chirashi: very fresh and tasty. Again, noticeable different - higher in quality vs the other sushi restaurants in the area. Tempura: light and crispy, I loved the sweet potato tempura that they make! The prices are also great for the quality and quantity that you get. Honestly, I don't see why you would pick other sushi places in the Hillsboro area when you can come here. Only thing to note is that it will be harder to accommodate larger parties here due to the limited space inside.

Cella A.

Yelp
I finally got around to trying this spot, and I'm glad I did. Seared Salmon Sushi (nigiri) was good, Agedashi Tofu was solid. The salad they serve in the beginning was absolutely amazing??!!! I've had similar salads at other sushi spots but this one was my fav. For entrees, I shared Curry Udon with a side of Chicken Katsu & the summer special Hiyashi Chuka Cold Ramen Noodle. The curry broth was good but the udon noodles could have been more chewy, which was prob due to preparation, but admittedly the intimate restaurant was busy with a Friday night dinner rush. Paired with the chicken katsu it was delicious though. My real winner from this spot was the summer cold ramen, for $17.95, which I'll be coming back for many more times this season. Portions were generous, and I came hungry. My bf had to finish off my food. The staff were amazing, kind, and accommodating!! Loved my experience :)

David K.

Yelp
One of the best, most authentic sushi in town. Service is good, small venue but good quality sushi makes it worth while. And it's long been a staple around this part of town.

Gwen S.

Yelp
The best sushi in the Beaverton metro area hands down. Fresh, large pieces of fish. I love the Spider Roll and Spicy Hamachi Roll. Tempura is light and crispy. Service is friendly and efficient. It gets busy, call ahead for reservations or be prepared to wait.

A. H.

Yelp
Did not expect to find myself going to get Japanese food at a strip mall but knew just by looking at the menu that it would be authentic Japanese comfort food. And it was delicious, as hoped and expected. The music is authentic Japanese 70s/80s/90s oldies and there's always at least one or two other tables with Japanese customers. Because it really is the best Japanese food you'll find at any restaurant in the Portland area. Menu variety A+++ Food quality A+++ Service is also A+++

Yuli L.

Yelp
My friend raved about Toshi's for a really long time, saying it is one of the best sushi restaurants in Beaverton. So i figured why not give it a try since take out is the best way to support our favorite restaurants during this pandemic, right? So i quickly placed a to go order by phone, and was asked to pick up 30 mins later. I ordered a unakyu roll (river eel with cucumber), a rainbow roll (highly recommended by my friend), and a set of creamy scallop nigiri. By the time I picked up the to go box, I noticed it's quite warm. Probably from the rice, I thought. Which later proven to be the case. First of all, everything looked oh-so-pretty; especially the rainbow roll. It reminded me of sushi donuts, which have all ingredients on top. The creamy scallops were also neatly wrapped and topped as well. I was cheery when I saw the presentation :) Then, I got to see and tasted the aftermath of warm sushi rice: unakyu roll fell apart because of the steam, and raw fish toppings lost their crunchiness as well. The heat wasn't hot enough to cook the raw fish, but just enough for me to see/taste the difference. The meal was still enjoyable, it just isn't what I expect from a sushi house. Even though this experience wasn't mind blowing for me, I can see how amazing it could be if the sushi rice wasn't so warm. It's a family own shop that offers good sushi, I hope it'll be awesome when I visit again. Wish I could give 3.5 stars. PS. The menu photos helped me ordered my sushi, so I took some extra for others as well.

Jonathan Y.

Yelp
Toshi's always hits the spot. The toshi don to me is the best deal in terms of flavor price and portion. The workers are really nice and hard-working. The one thing though is if you want to eat Toshi's on the Friday night or Saturday night, you'll need to prepare a long wait as it gets really busy. Usually when we call in for takeout it's always over an hour with today being over 2.5 h from order time. It's not their fault but with it being so close to our house and so good we usually will opt to wait.

Yelp
Very good delicious food, I recommend closing your eyes and just chewing the sushi feeling the texture and flavor, because it's as fresh as can be!

Yelp
Fantastic food and service. I really enjoyed how small and intimate the restaurant was and the staff was fantastic!

Yelp
Back again and food delicious as always! Tenzaru soba and tuna don hit the spot! Assorted sushi rolls are fresh and delicious, all made by the owner himself Toshi! Udon also has a good soup broth, daughter loved it! If your craving authentic Japanese food this is the place to go! So hard to find good Japanese food here in Oregon.
