Toshi Sushi Review - Mount Pleasant - Vancouver - The Infatuation

"Eating out is a lot of people’s favorite thing to do in Vancouver and staring at your phone for 30 minutes in a doorway while you wait for a table is something you just get used to doing - and Toshi is no exception. This is partially due to their no-reservation policy and the fact that it’s only slightly larger than a walk-in-closet, but it’s mostly because the food is really good and affordable. If you do end up waiting the usual hour or more and items haven’t sold out yet, the eel oshi sushi, caramelized barbeque eggplant, and buttery black cod are incredible. Try and go as early as possible to put your name down, then have a drink up the road at El Camino’s or Sing Sing Beer Bar to pass the time." - Shelley Mason

Food 4.8/5 authentic and tasty! The eggplant is sooooo good! Seasonal clam sushi was good but stopped the second time I went. Yes I went twice in a month. Chicken skewers turned out to be the least satisfying. They are very heavy on Sake so non-alcoholic options are limited. Service 5/5 super warm and helpful. Sat us down best as they can without a reservation. Ambiance 4/5 Cozy, crowded, not the most comfy and clean but it reminds me of Izakaya in Japan. 😌

Google
Hands down my favorite sushi spot in Vancouver. If you're looking for fresh, quality sushi at a great price point, with good service this is it! They have a wall of features as well as their staple menu, which makes every visit unique and fun. It's always busy, so generally there is a bit of a wait but it is so worth it. This is a must try!

My mom and I came to this restaurant for the first time on Thursday in the afternoon. We ordered some sashimi, nigiri sushi and roasted miso eggplant. I forgot to take a picture for the nigiri sushi we ordered. The food is very fresh, but 2 out of the 4 pieces of uni sashimi are incomplete. I expected 4 complete pieces of uni. It was cool to see some seasonal food items and I enjoyed trying the firefly squid with the special sauce.

We visited on a Wednesday evening after work, and the restaurant was packed—with a 30-minute wait for a table. We ordered the Spicy Combo (spicy tuna roll and spicy scallop roll), Philadelphia Roll, BBQ Sea Eel, Gindara (miso-baked black cod), Box Sushi, Fig & Yogurt Ice Cream, and Yuzu Green Apple Ice Cream. The miso-baked black cod is a standout—it literally melts in your mouth. Incredibly tender with a delicate umami flavor, it’s a must-try. The BBQ sea eel, one of their specials, was also delicious. The house-made ice creams were smooth and flavorful. I especially loved the fig for its natural taste, while the Yuzu Green Apple had a bold, sour citrus punch—perfect for fans of tart desserts. Everything else we ordered was decent, though slightly overpriced compared to other sushi spots.

Google
Nice food, nigiris are the best, very good price because of the quality. Other things are rather mediocre, tempuras are really oily and the taste of oil is pretty distinct, spicy tofu is just okay, nothing special, the bbq chicken probably needs to be made in a higher heat and the meat pieces definitely needs to be thinner, this tastes like it’s roasted in a lower heat for a longer time and they’ve not been flipped while roasting. But considering the price, they’re all pretty good. the lady that takes the orders was awesome. This restaurant has a rather compacted space but it’s nice and cozy. I’ll come back for the nigiri but not other foods.

Google
Truly excellent sushi 🍣 the quality and taste are really good, service staff friendly and fast. Minor deduction for the small tight dining room, but who cares (don't let that deter you, but just so you know). The line up outside says it all. No reso's taken, just gotta show up! A++

Google
Price for quality is amazing! The store is a quite small and squishy, but has cosy vibes. The food feels very authentic, and not your slap-sauce-on-everything vibes many Japanese restaurants go for nowadays. Everything was amazing! We got the special White Spring Salmon sashimi, blue fin tuna akami and ootoro nigiri, salmon roll, spicy scallop roll, negitoro roll and spicy tofu. It was all amazing but the scallop roll was a standout. My meal was so satisfying and we paid $37 each after tax and tip. We got there around 5:10pm and there was one table in front of us. We only waited 10mins tops. But definitely recommend going when they open if you don’t want to wait. I’m coming back when I can 😌

Google
The service is good here but the food quality is really lacking. We got a yam tempura roll, avocado roll, california roll and dynamite roll. The rolls were smaller than average for the same price as other places. The rolls were just thrown in boxes and not in nice pieces. They were not uniform sizes. The imitation crab was really weird and not what we are used to. Will not go again.

Yelp
The food here is always amazing. Love the black cod, fried chicken, nigiri combo, ice cream, and sashimi. We also tried the Uni from Japan for $13, regular Uni was out of season. The Uni from Japan was small but creamier and more delicate in flavor than regular. I would just order the regular when in season. The black cod is our fav.

Yelp
Probably the best sushi and sashimi I've had in the United States. I won't compare it to sushi in Japan but yeah it's damn good and fresh. There was a wait but it was worth it. The uni was so good that was definitely the high light of my meal. I chose less rice on some of my sushi pieces since my gut can't handle too much rice and they were fine with this, Rdawg refused to order it for me. It's okay they won't kick you out geez.

Yelp
Definitely waited at least 45min- 1 hour but it is one of those places worth eating at! The host and servers are really nice and they seem to know regulars by name. I am not a sushi lover but found ones that I enjoyed!! It was very tasty!

Yelp
*Updated review* A friend suggested going to Toshi for dinner on a Saturday during the May heat wave. I was a bit apprehensive as my friend wouldn't be available until 5:30pm and there are always line ups outside the restaurant. We were lucky to score free (shaded) parking about 2 blocks away from the restaurant and one of the people outside waiting advised us how to put our names on the sign up sheet. There were at least 5 names before ours but our name was called after 5 minutes. We were pleasantly surprised with the short wait but having only 2 people is a lot easier, as we got seated at the bar, since there is limited seating for parties larger than 2 people. We ordered the House combo, the crunchy combo, box sushi, 2 uni nigri, and one saba nigri. The sushi was of smaller portion but was all fresh and tasty. We left feeling just satisfied and split the bill - about $31 plus tips each. Unfortunately, they only sell ice cream by the pint so we decided to head to Earnest for dessert instead. Toshi has been around for a long time and has consistently kept up their quality of food and service.

Yelp
Delicious spot! A rotating stream of customers coming in, and you have to put your name on the waiting list in person. Fish was so fresh and I love that they have a limited selection menu - encourages you to try new and different items. My favourite items were the blue fin negitoro roll and box sushi! The shop itself is small but cozy. I will be back to try their handmade icecream!

Yelp
Was recommended by a friend to try Toshi and glad we did. The sushi is super fresh and the price is very reasonable. The wait was not too long, we were a party of four and waited around 15-20 minutes. Would definitely come back and try the grilled food next time.

Yelp
This was our favorite meal on the whole west coast! Exterior is lowkey and settled within a cute residential neighborhood. We were immediately welcomed upon walking in and wrote our name on the waitlist on the door. Heard there's usually a long line, but we were fortunate in a Friday to make it in upon arrival. Sushi was soft and fresh, beautifully paired with sauces and veggies. Waitress explained food in length and made us comfortable to ask questions and try new items!! We loved everything we ordered and were thrilled at the reasonable cost at the end. Perfect sushi stop for families and those looking for high-end sushi in a relaxed and cheerful environment. This was exactly what we were looking for in Vancouver!

Yelp
Stopped for lunch in for the day from out of town. Quick and delicious. Limited lunch menu, but that was OK because it was well done. Very friendly family feel.

Yelp
Amazing sushi, kind staff and reasonable prices is what you get at toshi! We got the usual order including their house combo which comes with sashimi (butterfish is some of the best you can ever have), house roll and tuna maki. I really enjoyed their negitoro roll as it was filled very generously and their rice is very well flavoured. In addition the chopped scallop roll, toro nigiri and uni nigiri were all of high quality and again, had perfectly compliment rice. The special of the night for us was the "new years eve" roll that the chef made for me even though it wasnt meant to be released yet (my bad at understanding instagram posts...) but they were so nice to make it for me anyways! It came with real crab, red tuna, shiso, avocado and oshinko. The flavours and textures worked together perfectly with the crunch of the pickle, the refreshing shiso and the fishy red tuna. It was a delicious bite and I wouldn't hesitate to get it again! Overall, you cannot go wrong with Toshi!

Yelp
I'm sure this place is great for fish, but for veggie sushi, this place is real lacklustre. We did a pick-up order one evening and was quoted half an hour for it to be ready. They delivered on that. We ordered: -Soy sheet veggie roll (x2): $4.75/roll. This comes with a thin green sheet of soy sheet that is rather tasteless but I guess is more interesting than without it. The interior is pretty lame: mostly cucumber, some carrot, and a hint of lettuce. One of the least inspired veggie rolls in the city. Lame. 2.5/5 -Avocado roll (x2; this normally comes with mayo, so, if vegan like us, ask for it without): $5.50/roll. Very standard run-of-the-mill avocado roll. Fine. 3/5 -Kampyo roll: $3.75/roll. Nice texture to the sweet gourd, but otherwise pretty standard. 3/5 -Inari (x3): $2.50/pc. On the small side, but perfectly acceptable and served the exact way that a hundred other places do. Standard. 3/5 -Wakame ($5.75). Standard seaweed salad that you'd buy a big carton of from a grocery store. Fine but nothing special here. 2.5/5 All in all, not a good spot for veggie sushi. If nearby and seeking veggie sushi, go to one of the many other sushi spots in this neighbourhood (recommended: Sushi Mania).

Yelp
Excellent sushi! The quality was top notch! We came here with friends and ordered a variety of sashimi, nigiri, sushi rolls and other small plates. The highlights were: Agedashi tofu - truly one of the best tofu I've had All the sashimi/nigiri: especially tuna and scallop Baked eggplant - perfect sweetness to end the meal with Food and drinks were super well priced and we loved it all. Looking forward to coming back here!

Yelp
This was our first stop for dinner on our first day in Vancouver. We were not disappointed. Everything on the menu looked so good, it was hard to decide. The food was so fresh and delicious! The service staff were very attentive. This is a small, intimate place which only seats about 20 people. We were lucky to score a table! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
I'm going to be an outlier here and say that Toshi is just fine. Maybe it was all of the build up over the years of hearing how amazing it is, but I really don't get the hype. There is definitely much better sushi in this city. Perhaps it is because I ordered mostly vegetable based sushi and not so much fish? I expect that a good restaurant should excel across the board and not just at some things. I'm not saying that I'll never have it again, but it won't be my go-to.

Yelp
I am visiting Vancouver and looked for a sushi spot in the area and stumbled upon Toshi. I was in a group of five, which is not ideal for a small restaurant like this, but we wanted to try it nonetheless. We waited over an hour for the one table that accommodates us, but it was worth the wait. They have daily fish specials, and I spotted the negitoro bluefin tuna roll and had to get it. It was stuffed with a hefty amount of fish and it was the perfect handroll to start. I ordered the #4 House Combo which comes with a tuna roll, the house roll (shrimp tempura with avocado), and assorted sashimi. All the fish tasted super fresh and the sockeye salmon and albacore sashimi were my favorites of this combo. Our table shared the tempura and miso glazed eggplant, and both were incredible. The tempura had the perfect light, crispy batter and the eggplant was dessert-like. Overall, there is a reason why this place gets so busy and that reason is a good one.

Yelp
A solid place for sushi. Everything was fresh and delicious. The price was also very reasonable and thr servers were really attentive. Their nigiri was very yummy. I would come again and still come when they open because there was a line at around 6 pm and they don't take reservations. If you want good authentic sushi, this is the spot!!!

Yelp
You can't make reservations. Get there and write your name in the list. Worth every minute of wait. The food is amazing, the service is great and everyone is smiling.

Yelp
Toshi Sushi has been on my radar but the long lineups has deterred me from coming often. They're sister restaurants to Shiro, one of our favourite sushi spots in the city. We came at 5:15pm on an early Wednesday evening and it was already full. We added our name (go inside and find the list) and ended up waiting 45 minutes for a table. The inside is small with less than 30 seats. Saw many people doing takeout instead. The menu is short; soup, udon noodles, salad, tofu, agemono, yakimono/itamemono, donburi, sashimi, nigiri, sushi combos and maki. Trip #1 - 2x Green tea - servers came by frequently to refill our teas. - #4 House combo ($19.00) - house roll, tuna roll and 6 pieces of sashimi (2 each of salmon, hamachi and red snapper). Sashimi was fresh; my favourite was the hamachi. House and tuna roll are on the small side. - 2x maguro ($2.75), 2x salmon ($2.75), toro ($3.00) and tai nigiri ($2.75) - rice was nicely packed and properly seasoned. - Chopped whole scallop ($5.00) and negi hama ($5.25) - these two makis were solid. Negi hama (yellowtail and green onion) was a nice change from our usual order of negi toro. - Nasu dengaku ($6.95) - baked eggplant and miso sauce. This came out last; nicely grilled but the sauce is quite sweet. Trip #2 - 5 Nigiri combo ($21.00 for 10) - albacore tuna, wild sockeye salmon, saba, ebi, hamachi, ika, amaebi, hokkigai, aji (horse mackerel) and tamago. My favourites were the saba (not too salty), hamachi (good bite), amaebi and aji. Tamago was respectable but didn't sway me one way or another. - Assorted sashimi ($29.50 for 15) - included albacore tuna, hamachi, wild sockeye salmon, aji and hotate. The hotate were B's favourite; plump and sweet. The aji was my personal favourite; a bit more texture. - Yakitori ($5.75 for 2) - two grilled chicken skewers. Okay but found the sauce a touch sweet. Probably wouldn't get again. - Chopped scallop ($5.00) - the ratio was more rice than scallop. Still doesn't beat Sushi by Yuji or Shiro's. - Umeshiso ($3.50) - delightfully tart and sour. - Negi toro ($5.25) - the better of the two maki's that we ordered. Negi was fresh and had a good consistency. Is it worth the wait at Toshi's? Either go early or get your order to go. Good but doesn't crack my top 3 sushi spots in town. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
i've heard a lot of good things about toshi and finally got to try them out last night. we arrived at around 7:50 pm and added our party of two to their self serve waitlist. the place was packed, we waited around ten minutes and was greeted by a lovely server who asked how my day was. this place is tiny and feels a little cramped, specials were posted on the wall and a one page laminated menu at our table. it was odd that we were served water in plastic disposable cups. we were given a complimentary dish of chilled eggplant marinated in miso that was very delicate and delicious. not sure if this is to whet our appetite, or an amuse bouche but my spouse said it comes with his beer. i was excited for what's to come and thought everything we ordered was just okay. the tuna and sashimi ten piece portion were very small, the gindara was cooked well and flavourful, the assortment of tempura was okay and the chopped scallop roll was fine. not quite sure what the hype is, maybe we ordered the wrong things, or my expectations were too high. i may come back again, to try their unique japanese inspired ice cream flavours, if i was in the neighbourhood.

Yelp
I used to frequent Toshi Sushi years ago and it was amazing. Tonight, I didn't feel the same. We had the Saba Battera and it was probably my favourite item. The rest: Chopped Scallop Roll - it felt sort of skinny and without much scallop unlike most places Avocado Salmon Roll - the avocado was in irregular shape so not sure who was on avocado duty but knife skill was poor. More surprising is the sushi chef ended up using it. BC Roll - it was tasty but a bit dry for my taste Pork Gyoza - this was deep fried. Wasn't bad but wasn't spectacular Hamachi Sashimi - this was really good, fresh and no hint of fishiness. Negitoro Maki - this was nice and full and although it is a small roll but they packed in a generous amount of tuna belly. Very fresh and love the perfect amount of chopped green onion The service was nice though

Yelp
Toshi is a cute little place my friends originally introduce me to. It's tiny but mighty with fresh options to choose from. When things were normal, you could always see the line formation that would happen-- stretching well beyond the tiny gem. COVID protocols: I've only ordered through Ubereats so I'm not sure what it's like dining in. My order: Salmon sashimi -- wild sockeye 4/5 Tuna sashimi 4/5 Spicy combo 4/5 Final recommendation: Honestly, I come here for the classics! It is a very small place so I may not be comfortable dining in and with the new protocols it's not happening.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese sushi in mt. Pleasant. Pros: - super fresh ingredients and delicious outcome. Special Menu changes frequently as a result - fast service - super reasonable prices FYI: - closed Mondays - be prepared to line up 30min before they open because there will be people that will (very Vancouver) - leave your name on the clipboard on the wall and they'll collect you while waiting outside (they encourage people to stay out of the inside foyer for fire safety reasons) - skip the line. Get take out. - free parking just the next block up on 16th Ave, close to the park

Yelp
I found this restaurant to be a little overrated and overhyped. After seeing all the great reviews, I expected a lot more. Knowing that there is usually a line up, we arrived at around 4:20 pm and we were maybe the 4th in line for a table. Once the restaurant opened at 5, we were seated, with plenty of people queued behind us. Spicy agedashi tofu: the favourite of what we ordered. The tofu pieces are lightly battered, and the spicy sauce is amazing. Ended up using this sauce for other things. A must order! Box sushi: ordered this for the gram. Very beautiful, however, the taste was just meh and nothing special. I'd recommend taking the thin slice of lemon off as it was very bitter. Combo: this was a good value. You get 6 pieces of sashimi, a tuna roll, and dragon roll. The rolls were average tasting but this is a good filler dish. Ikura nigiri: sadly, they no longer do this with a quail egg. I do enjoy the roe though, nice and salty. Japanese butter fish nigiri: a bit on the pricey side as their normal butter fish was sold out. Not at all what I expected, I would have preferred tuna or mackerel instead. Grilled eggplant: way too sweet for me, and the skin was chewy. I saw a table only eating the top part and leaving the skin. I felt like I could have made a version of this myself. I didn't find the food to be amazing or of excellent quality. It's definitely all right, but I wouldn't say the value is there as prices are about average. The tuna tataki looks promising, although it's on the pricier side. Would I come back? Probably not after the underwhelming experience I had. I don't think the prices were outrageous but it definitely was not good value. I'd consider getting the spicy agedashi tofu again. It's definitely not worth the wait.

Naomi ..

Yelp
Toshi is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Vancouver, the fish is super fresh and the dishes are delicious and consistent. I love the owner and her team is friendly and attentive, prices are also so reasonable for the quality and care that goes into the food. Thank you!

Yelp
I finally tried this spot and glad I did. Having tried sushi around the city, I was quite impressed with the freshness of the sushi. The price is decent as well. First, the restaurant has good safety measures during covid-19. There is a little table set outside where you can pickup or place your order. It has hand sanitizer and menus under plastic. The more important thing for me, is the taste and quality of the sushi. I ordered the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, plus a tuna tataki roll. They were all very fresh and tasted great. One measure of a sushi restaurant is the freshness of the wasabi, and this restaurant has very soft and quality wasabi. One thing that is lacking is more variety in the types of rolls you can order. It's always nice to be able to choose sushi that has a creative mix of ingredients. However, if you like classic Japanese sushi and other food options, this is a reliable satisfying choice.

Yelp
During our 5-day trip to Vancouver, we ended up going to Toshi Sushi twice because we enjoyed it so much!! It's a cozy, little restaurant with a long wait on the weekends, but trust me...it's worth the wait. They have a daily special list that changes out frequently. If there's something you want, order it fast, otherwise they might run out! That happened to us on the second visit with the King Salmon sashimi. All of the sashimi was super fresh and delicious. Because we went twice, we had the chance to try a variety of things: + Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi (Toro and Akami) + Albacore Tuna Sashimi (Toro) + Sockeye Salmon Sashimi + King Salmon Nigiri + Chicken Karage + Spicy Agedashi Tofu + Negi Toro Roll + Matcha Beer (100% would recommend) + Hot Sake (around 5 shots for a small) My absolute favorite has to be the Blue Fin Tuna, especially the fatty Toro pieces! It literally melts in your mouth like butter. We were so sad that we only had one order (4pcs), but we had plenty of other delicious sashimi too. The tapas were also pretty bomb - the fried chicken was juicy and flavorful. We also got the tofu with spicy sauce, it reminded me of Korean spicy rice cakes, but with a nice crunch. I absolutely love this gem of a restaurant - drinks were on point, food was amazing, service was pleasant, all for a good price point too! Each night was about $65 for us, with all the stuff we ordered + drinks! Definitely worth every penny, worth stopping by if you love amazingly fresh sushi!

Yelp
Super efficient waitlist system, service and simply great sushi and sashimi! Delicious blue fin tuna toro and reasonable price. No complaint!

Yelp
The line ups are worth the wait. The last few times my partner and I ended up sharing a table, but that other couple actually added to the experience. We ended up sharing/splitting a few dishes that we otherwise would not have tried.

Yelp
Must try if you're in Vancouver and looking for authentic Japanese. Fresh Sp scallop, toro nigiris and sashimi here are our go to, also like to treat ourselves to the fresh sheet now and again - they often have a nice selection of UNI and Bluefin. Cod and eggplant are total bangers too! The staff's always so friendly and welcoming, takeouts a great option if you want to avoid the line. It's worth the wait!

Yelp
Ordered take-out (that's all they have right now). Aside from the 30 cent bag fee which isn't their fault, 5 stars for the sushi-very fresh. Ordered (real crab) california roll, sockeye salmon roll, sockeye salmon sashimi, dragon roll, and shrimp tempura.

Tracy S.

Yelp
Great basic, well-prices sushi!!! No complaints here, and I'm picky about sushi. That's all I have to say, and it should be enough. :)

Yelp
Magnificent food. Been here many times, been lucky sometimes, and unlucky on others. On our last visit we got very lucky. Short wait, someone put 2 hours of parking in the meter before we pulled up, the server was very nice to us, and we got a nice table to ourselves. On other occasions I've waited ages, been abused, and then sat at a shi#ty seat, feeling very under-appreciated. So for that -1 star. When we were lucky, I did see some other people get the short-end of the stick. In some sick way, humans enjoy that, because you feel like the chosen one, you feel special, and the definition of special, means everyone can't be it. However, I think to be a truly great restaurant you have to design the experience from start to finish for everyone. So while the food is fantastic, they are a victim of their own success. They should sit down and figure out how to improve a few more aspects of the experience at their restaurant.

Yelp
Got takeout from Toshi yesterday! Called to order around 6PM and it was ready around 6.30PM. Seemed to be quite busy, lots of people waiting around the sidewalk outside to pick up their orders. I ordered the following: -Dragon roll -BC Roll -Umeshiso roll -Oshinko roll -Tempura -Nigiri (Unagi & Tuna & a few others) Total price for above was about $50. Overall I thought the sushi was good, the fish and rice was fresh and the rolls were tasty. My favourite was the unagi nigiri, nice and fresh and not too sweet (sometimes unagi is served with a very sweet sauce). I was a little disappointed in the BC Roll, salmon skin itself was good but roll had too much mayo for my taste. I will definitely come back here for fresh sushi!

Yelp
We were recommended to try this place out by some friends who knew we were visiting town. We drove over and looking at the restaurant, were sure that we had looked up the wrong place. Toshi is a small hole in the wall restaurant just off the end of a busy street. But there was a huge line outside, despite the pouring rain. So people must know something, we figured, so we gave it a try. Even on a weekday with pouring rain, it was still a good 40 minute wait because they only have half a dozen tables -- and people linger to enjoy the food. The sushi is fantastic. We're both Japanese and both agreed that it was some of the best sushi we've had in the States. I've had some better sushi -- but that was in Seattle and was $100+ for a plate, where as this was $50 for the both of us. For the money, this place can't be beat. We ended up two very full, very happy campers. The final bill was tiny, less than we've paid for some Chinese takeout. And well well worth it. Would come again.

Yelp
3.5 stars. The place is relatively small compared to some other places, probably fits about 27 people or so. On any given night, there is always a line up. They have a few 4-seater tables, a few 2 seater and a bar area that fits 7 people. They don't recommend any group larger than 6 as it will be hard to accommodate. The food is good. You pay for quality over quantity and some of the rolls are decent sizes. They aren't large like some other sushi places but I rather get something that's good, than just a larger roll. We ordered the dragon roll, spider roll, kanpachi, salmon cheek and aburi. The rolls were small but they tasted fresh and well balanced.

Yelp
Continues to be one of the best Values in Vancouver...lineup for 430p to get in at 5p... We've been going here for years and honestly there are only a few restaurants we'd be willing to lineup in Vancouver, and this is one of them. Opens at 5pm so if you get in at 430p you'll be guaranteed in the first seating...after that all bets are off. Sushi, Sashimi and other Izakaya (like Tempura) are all here. At good value prices and fresh flavours. Two people for $50 or so is not a problem, and you'll be full. Staff are friendly and professional. Your WHOLE Group has to be seated together...otherwise, they may make you wait!

Yelp
To be fully honest, I came into Toshi Sushi with very high expectations due to all the rave reviews. But I've now visited and picked up to-go orders a few times now and all the experiences have been mediocre to average. The sushi competition is fierce in this city and there are plenty of great options. In comparison, Toshi is a-okay to average in my books. I've gotten a few different rolls now: + Dynamite Roll + Cali Roll + Dragon Roll + Spider Roll + House Roll + Spicy Salmon Roll + Chicken Katsu Roll + Sweet Potato Roll + Chopped Scallop Roll While the sushi tastes fresh, the portions are fairly small. I mean it's fairly priced - the rolls are anywhere from $2.95 to $9.50, so in comparison to other spots you definitely are paying less. The restaurant itself is fairly small, so on most evenings there tends to be a line out the door. My suggestion if you do decide to come here is to call in for pick up, or visit around lunch time.

Yelp
Super quality sushi and reasonably priced given the pandemic. The choice of fish is few than most other places that we go to, however the quality wins by far. Note portions are smaller than the typical American style places but the quality and price way over compensate for it.,

Yelp
Toshi is oishi It's good for the value that you're paying for. And don't just trust me, trust the many others that are willing to wait in line! The place doesn't take reservations, so the early bird gets the worm on this one. A cool little practice that sets this place apart is their introduction to daily soecials. Right off the bat before you're seated you'll be taken to their specials wall and be introduced to the days special Unfortunately this day they were low on specials, and with a group of friends we were only able to order incomplete sets of special nigiri to try out To our delight, people have got to try this fish - the Akayagara It tastes like an offspring between a Tai and a Saba. With the sweetness of Tai and the firmness of Saba, this fish will make you craving more For the night we also had spot prawns , regular prawns (amaebi), prawn tempura and fried spot prawn heads, a sure prawn extravaganza. Don't forget fresh Saba, tobiko and ikura!

Yelp
It has been ages since we visited Toshi partly because it is a bit far for me now. Anyhow, due to the pandemic, the restaurant is only takeout. So, no long line ups. We ordered the following for lunch: -House roll -dragon roll -bc roll -box sushi All rolls were delicious and they were always my favorite at Toshi. One thing noticed is the menu has shrunk. I am a little disappointed not to see my other favorites like the the miso eggplant, miso black cod and the tuna tataki. I hope Toshi will bring these back one day.

Yelp
I have always been convinced that I KNOW the best sushi. I make sushi at home and tell my friends and family that I am a great chef. Looks like I stand corrected as Toshi is now the best. What a taste! I get goose pimples when I think of ordering sushi for my son. It finally feels like he respects me as a parent and I have Toshi Sushi to thank. I recommend Toshi to all of my colleagues and friends. Thank you Toshi!!!

Yelp
I've ordered twice during COVID times and it's been fine, but nothing to get excited about. I tried the box sushi, roll combo, appetizer tempura and spicy curry udon. Box sushi ($12) is interesting, I personally wasn't a huge fan of the lemon but I'd still recommend giving it a try as it's unique and the fish was fresh. The roll combo ($22) comes with a tuna maki, house roll (tempura prawn and avocado), and 6 pieces of sashimi. I wish they had more maki options for delivery on the menu - aside from the box roll all the sushi rolls come as part of a combo and it would be nice to be able to pick a selection of rolls that I like best, or add single additional roll to a combo. Appetizer tempura ($8) was pretty standard. Spicy curry udon ($16) had a nice variety of pork and prawns on top and was definitely spicy. Overall it's good but doesn't really live up to the hype.

Yelp
A great spot for casual and fresh sushi and sashimi and other standout dishes including soft shelled crab tempura and baked miso eggplant. Overall: 4/5 Value: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Decor: 3.5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Sashimi and sushi offerings are great here and at fairly reasonable prices ($3-4 a piece depending on variety). Fresh and delectable. They have several other good dishes like black cod (good and melt in your mouth tasty but sort of expensive for the portion size. The miso eggplant is such a great mix of savory and sweet with caramelized miso glaze! The bbq squid was quite good as well. Overall it's a casual and simple place but with good attentive service and fair prices compared to other options. It's not in the most central area but worth a visit. To note, they don't take reservations and usually has a line before opening at 5. Would recommend coming like 15 min early and trying to get in the first seating.

Yelp
How does this place have a lineup out the door all the time? I've been wanting to come here for MONTHS and FINALLY got a chance tonight and I was quite disappointed. FOOD/DRINK: 29/50 This is why people go to restaurants, obviously. I would like someone to tell me what's so special about Toshi Sushi. I had so many people recommend this place to me but it truly didn't have anything more exciting than the next $4.50/roll sushi house. The only thing that got me remotely excited was the gomae (2nd best I've ever had). The miso soup wasn't hot. The "spicy" tuna roll wasn't spicy. The quality of tuna was average, not terrible though. The baked eggplant is apparently one of their most popular dishes... Really? It was nothing more than mushy baked eggplant (that wasn't very hot or fresh) brought out to you on a piece of tinfoil sprinkled with what tasted like brown sugar and soy sauce. I'm not trying to bash this place, just giving my honest experience. I will not be back, but from the looks of it, that won't effect their business too much! ;p SERVICE/SUPPORT STAFF: 19/30 We were greeted with a BIG lovely smile and promptly brought to the table. We waited for about 5 minutes before our server finally came to take our drink order. He tried to leave before I could stop him to order an appy too. This made us feel rushed. He was very kind and hit all his marks other than that. Our tea was topped up without a wait throughout the meal. Thank you! We did not finish more than half the eggmush and the other waitress asked if we wanted it packed up. I said, "Absolutely not." She did not ask if it was exceptional, she just took it off the table. If it were me, I would have taken it off the bill. It was awful. When it came time for the bill, we wanted it separate but they brought it all on one. When we asked for it separate, another girl came back with a calculator instead of ACTUALLY separating the bill by seat number. Haha. We paid and left less than impressed. ENVIRONMENT/VIBE: 11/20 It's small, cute, but you have to wait to get in because, for whatever reason (did we really just have a bad experience???), there is ALWAYS a lineup for this place! I didn't use the bathrooms or get a good look at the cleanliness of the kitchen. It felt like a nice family owned business, but still, in general, there was nothing "special" about this place in my opinion! OVERALL EXPERIENCE: 59/100 Won't be back! Enjoy your mush! :D

Yelp
One of my fave sushi spots in the neighbourhood. No reservations and always a line. Come when it opens to get a table right away or put yourself on waitlist. The chicken yakitori is amazing and has a delicious sauce. Other faves include the wild sockeye salmon sushi.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and the sushi here is always fresh and tasty. But there is also always a wait to get in. Last night, we got there a bit past 7pm, so we waited just over an hour for a table. I've heard a lot of great things about the nasu dengaku (baked eggplant). So we decided to order it to give a try. It didn't disappoint. It has a nice miso glaze and is comforting on a rainy night. One of the specials they had that night was fresh saba. It was delicious. My friend saw it and said it looked really good and ended up ordering one for herself as well. It was one of our favourites of the night. Honestly, everything that we ordered was delicious. We had a variety of nigiri and rolls. The chopped scallop is a bit different than other places because it is larger chunks of scallop with a dollop of mayo. If you want something more similar to other sushi places, then the Sakura scallop is the one to go for (scallop mixed with mayo and tobiko). The family roll, which is salmon and ikura, is an interesting one because I've never seen it at other restaurants. We both really like ikura and were happy to see it in a roll. The negitoro roll is different than most other restaurants because the rice is on the outside of the roll rather than the inside. Overall, the sushi was great, prices are on par with the quality, and service was excellent. They frequently came to fill our tea and check up on us. We never felt like we needed to wave down a server, they just came by. Great sushi place to try, but be willing to wait in line.

Yelp
There are millions of ways to cook fish, but we just like to eat it in the sashimi-style. Toshi, apparently is one of the few places to go for sushi in Vancouver. There is always a lineup outside of the restaurant even sometimes we go before it opens, but we wouldn't leave the line and come back later because the daily menu is limited in quantity and usually sells out quickly. Toshi is not roomy, but nobody would mind. Welcomed by sushi chefs with a warm smile when we walked in while their hands were busy rolling the rice sheet, like a typical hard-working Japanese style restaurant. I would recommend choosing from the daily menu first, and the eggplant appetizer. Nigiri can be ordered individually, as many kinds as you wish to try. Don't worry, anything at Toshi was chosen with care and trusted quality. Toshi is a Japanese restaurant we go most often and always feel satisfied. (Too bad our favorite sushi chef recently retired, please send my best wishes to him)
