27 Best Hotels in Madrid

"The minimalist design and buzzing energy at TÓTEM Madrid draws locals in, and they stay at the bar for fizzy cocktails and Spanish wine. Before it opened as a hotel, the 19th-century building underwent a full restoration; the lobby's original wooden staircase spirals up the five floors. Today, sandwiched between the popular Serrano and Goya shopping streets and close to Paseo de la Castellana, Totem, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, has found its rightful place in Salamanca."

TÓTEM Madrid

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?Sandwiched between the popular Serrano and Goya shopping streets and close to Paseo de la Castellana, this newcomer has found its rightful place in Salamanca. Beautiful staffers and minimalist design infuse Totem Madrid with buzzworthy energy that draws locals to the bar for fizzy cocktails and Spanish wine. What's the backstory? The building was gutted to produce a high-design, art-filled space—now the flagship of VP, a Spanish hotel chain. There are plenty of eye-catching pieces in the public areas, none so captivating as the courtyard water sculpture, the handiwork of Catalan designer Pere Gifre. In total, there are more than 300 art pieces spread throughout the hotel, including the rooms. Tell us about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The guest rooms live on the higher floors of this mixed-use building, and even the rooms that face away from the square have lovely views of rooftops and the city skyline. Despite major construction work in the square facing the hotel, you’d never know it thanks to excellent soundproofing. The design style is decidedly contemporary; think hardwood floors, Scandi touches, velvet armchairs, well-placed power outlets, L’Occitane toiletries. There are nine types of rooms; even the Standard (the smallest) feels cool and trendy. In-the-know travelers can request one of the seven rooms with a balcony or one of the five with ensuite workout equipment. The largest suite, the Presidential, has dual views of the Royal Palace and the square plus its own fitness center and a shower large enough for a small party. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?The Wi-Fi's free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Gingko Sky Bar is immensely popular—arrive early to beat the line. The adjoining restaurant, which serves Mediterranean and Asian dishes, spills onto the building’s signature wraparound terrace. Its new menu rotates quarterly depending upon the season’s freshest ingredients. And the service? There’s a whiff of “we know we’re beautiful” among the staff. Dress and act as they do, and they will be impressed. What type of travelers will you find here?Well dressed and widely traveled. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene?Salamanca is fashion-forward and trendy, but there’s a lot more of Madrid to explore. Book a themed experience directly through the hotel—say, one that focuses on local art, music, or crafts. Is there anything you'd change?Only the higher-priced rooms have Nespresso machine, and we think free caffeine should be available for all. Any other hotel features worth noting?Plenty of Madrid hotels have rooftop pools, but none seems to be as high as this one. What else should we know?Small Luxury Hotels of the World has partnered with World of Hyatt; book your room through Hyatt to take advantage of the loyalty-program perks." - Ramsey Qubein

This was recommended by friends and they were right. A beautiful hotel, in Salamanca. Great neighborhood for shopping, dining and easy walk to many of Madrid's sights. We had a drink every night in the cool lounge/bar, breakfast in their charming dining room. Room was very nice, comfortable beds. Upon arrival we were greeted with a lovely bottle of wine and pastries. The front desk staff was professional and well informed. Special shout out to Javier, the concierge, for his dining recommendations. I would definitely stay here again.

I have visited Madrid several times and usually stay at The Principal. I decided on Hotel Totem for this trip based on its reviews and new-to-me Salamanca location. The location is indeed great, just around the corner from Mercado de la Paz, in the middle of endless high-end shopping and restaurants, close to the Museo Arqueológico Nacional and an easy 15-minute walk from the Prado. ||On check-in, I was offered a “better room” for “just 30 Euro more per night”. I was sold that this was a much more sizable and pleasant room with more outside light coming in from the street-front location. I unfortunately elected the upgrade. I was kept awake through each night due to the loud street noises late into the night and street lighting that I could not get the blackout curtains to close out. When I complained to the front desk, I was told they would “make a note of it”. The room itself was clean, but small and spare. I was traveling solo and cannot imagine how cramped this would feel for a couple. Room noises from adjacent rooms were apparent. The bathroom had a slow-draining shower that caused water to spill under the glass doors and cover half the bathroom floor by the end of my short showers necessitating me to cover the floor in towels so I would not slip on the wet tile. ||I elected daily breakfast. I do not drink coffee. Tea was a huge disappointment. Despite my asking each day for “very, very hot water” I was brought a pot of lukewarm water which would not steep. The tea itself is of inferior quality, dismaying for a high-end hotel. You would think the hotel gets lots of British travelers so this would not be an issue. Food was equally disappointing. I ordered an omelet with cheese and onions two days in a row. The first day I received an omelet with tomatoes. The second day I got an omelet with chunks of uncooked cheese and onions inside a runny, uncooked center. ||Turndown is exactly as others have described. Upon opening the door, I was not asked if I wanted turndown service or whether I needed fresh towels or to have my trash emptied. Rather, I was just abruptly handed a bottle of water and told to have a good night.||I was overall disappointed and will not stay here again. I expect my overall negative review will receive a defensive response from management as others who have complained have received. I urge readers to consider what this says about where the guest falls in the hotel's hierarchy of whom to please.

Lovely hotel in the heart of Madrid. Great rooms, splendid staircase, amazing service at the bar. However, they charged me 22 euros for a laundry bag without any previous warning/communication that there was a fee for using it. It is a normal laundry bag, granted made from recycled materials, and at our disposal in the closet, like in any other hotel. I would not have used it knowing it cost 22 euros! So if you stay there, watch out for hidden costs....

This is quite a gem located in a terrific neighborhood. We had one of their large rooms which was comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast service was very good and responsive. The room pricing varies from day to day, but I viewed the higher prices as a pretty reasonable value especially compared to other European cities.

Gem of a small boutique hotel in the barrio of Salamanca in Madrid. Incredibly helpful and proactive, genuinely friendly staff from front desk, to doormen, bar and restaurant. Excellent follow up service and after completion of request. Eager to problem solve and provide alternative solutions and suggestions that responds to guest needs and is not formulaic. All basics are met. |Rooms are in excellent condition, clean and thoughtfully appointed. Tasteful contemporary design without being over the top, or gimmicky. Great bar area that also serves snacks and cosy enough to have catch ups or reading. While the hotel is not in the central of tourist sites and away from the buzz, if you enjoy walking, and small hotels it is very accessible. Transport is easy to major sites.

We visited Madrid and stayed at the Totem Hotel. It was an outstanding experience from their front desk Staff, to the bar tenders in the lobby bar and the Pimiento Verde restaurant (subject of their own review). ||We reserved a suite and it didn’t disappoint. Room was comfortable with a comfortable bed and a good shower (always a key to a good stay). ||They have a small gym w two treads, two stationary bikes, and additional small space for stretching. Since the hotel wasn’t crowded, it was usable but one morning with two other people, it got a bit tight. ||It’s located in a nice area near downtown Madrid with several restaurants nearby. But you must have dinner at El Pimiento Verde, which is also outstanding and right in the hotel. ||Staff at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner were very attentive and friendly. We highly recommend the Totem and we’ll return.

We stayed here for one night before catching our flight out of Madrid airport and I wish we had more time here! What a gem! The service here was simply outstanding. So attentive and helpful. Really convenient for the airport while also being in a beautiful neighborhood in Madrid that felt more residential. Fantastic location with tons of excellent shops and great food. Rooms are small but well organized — but small rooms are expected in Madrid! The hotel itself is beautiful. We would absolutely stay again when exploring Madrid.
