"Inspired by the classic roadside motor lodge and set along the Hoosic River, this light‑wood, glass‑happy hideout blurs indoors and out with big windows that look straight into nature. Opened in 2018 and still the cool kid in North Adams, it’s a stylish base for nearby art pilgrimages—and after a day out, I’m back at the firepit for s’mores under the crisp Berkshire night." - Jessica Chapel

"An unconventional hotel in the Berkshires, offering artist performances and wellness treatments, located next to MASS MoCA." - Alexis Benveniste

"Inspired by the American roadside motor lodge of yore, Tourists is built for contemporary design lovers with lots of light wood on the banks of the Hoosic River. Many of the large windows in guest rooms look straight into nature, helping blur the line between the outdoors and indoors. Opened in 2018, Tourists still feels like the cool new kid on the block with the clientele to match. For those exploring Williamstown and North Adams, Tourists is perfectly situated. It’s approximately three miles from the Clark Art Institute, MASS MoCA, and Bright Ideas Brewing. If you’re visiting this corner of the Berkshires, there’s nowhere more stylish to stay." - Alex Van Buren, Andrea Whittle, Devra Ferst

"Many decades later, my husband and I sat on the patio at Tourists, a reimagining of the archetypal American motel built on the site of an old motor lodge halfway between Williamstown and downtown North Adams. We took in the crowd around us: a guy with a New Order T-shirt, a gay couple with a big white dog, a stylish man and woman in their eighties. The scent of burning wood filled the air. I heard a train pass in the distance. Caleb's beer came in a can designed with the same font and color palette as the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album. Then a server spread an entire garden before us: sweet and spicy hummus with marinated vegetables and a sheet of naan the size of an elephant's ear; crispy quinoa and freekeh tossed in a creamy kefir dressing and topped with avocado and jack cheese; a salad of fire-alarm-red tomatoes. Moments before, I had overheard a man at another table going on about how 'fresh' the food was. Yeah, yeah, I thought. Everything's 'fresh' these days. But this was picked-five-minutes-ago fresh. Watching the sky above the lodge's peaked roof turn a smoky purple, I mopped up the last of the hummus and felt a tingling sense of delight." - Travel + Leisure Editors
"From the Rockwell Museum, it was an easy hour’s drive to Tourists, a motor lodge in North Adams; a staffer told me the property’s two charging stations are now a hot commodity as the share of guests arriving in EVs has grown significantly, I plugged in and took Remy to make balsam-and-cucumber-scented candles as part of the hotel’s Art & Adventure program, and the next morning we explored its 30-acre nature retreat where we bumped into another family at one of several giant musical installations and performed a symphony together." - Lauren Matison Lauren Matison Lauren Matison is a writer and editor specializing in outdoor adventure, sustainability, and family travel.
