Best Haitian Restaurants Around Boston | Eater Boston

"Part restaurant and part grocery store, Toutwèl offers a glimpse of Haiti, where you can find staples like djon djon, epis, and chokola, essential ingredients in Haitian kitchens. At the Mattapan gem, you’ll discover mayi moulen, a cornmeal porridge breakfast staple. You can’t leave without diving into their fritay; it’s one of the best you can find in Boston. That platter packs together fried breadfruit, accra (a malanga fritter), griot (pork marinated in sour orange juice), marinade (an herb-infused fried dough) and it is finished with a dousing of spicy pikliz. Pair it with an order of ji manyòk, a cold creamy smoothie made of blended yucca, star anise, cinnamon, Haitian vanilla, almond extract, and evaporated milk." - Ashia Aubourg

Wife and I went to Haitian food for the first time. It was delicious! The fried pork was by far my favorite. The wife’s favorite was the bean sauce. The fried veggies were really delicious as well. The portions were huge! I realize I don’t have a photo of the rice… we got a white rice and a black rice. Both were a delight.

The venue is clean and spacious I thought. They have signs in place in compliance with the social distancing guidelines and a excellent customer service. In terms of taste, this is not the best Haitian restaurant, but they're sure to be one of the best value for your money. The plate was heavy and can surely feed to people. In terms of wait time i think it's best to call ahead for your order as you would for many Haitian restaurants. It's not fast food, even Fritay takes time to prepare. I thought they had my food in a timely manner regardless.

The food here is absolutely excellent. The service is friendly and attentive, which makes the whole experience even better. If you’re looking for a place that serves real Haitian food with great hospitality, I highly recommend this Toutwèl restaurant!

The food is soooo flavorful. Had the stewed goat w the fried plate - plantains, fritters, squash. All washed down w guava juice. Will be back.

I bought chicken wings and sou chicken with a small salad. There was no rice or no plantains. My total was $51… $26 for sous chicken and $26 for chicken wings is crazy! Any where else, you can get a full plate of food for around 20. I won’t be back.

I stopped by Toutwèl Restaurant in Mattapan hungry and I left completely satisfied. The goat fritay platter was outstanding: smoky fried goat, crisp plantains, akra. The patés (egg and chicken) were freshly made and so savory. I also loved the goat stew and Légim, which were seasoned beautifully and felt like comfort food to the core. The restaurant has a simple, bright setup just what you want for casual dining or pick‑up. The staff were friendly and helpful. I'd give a solid 5 out of 5

Unfortunately, these were the worst Haitian beef patties that I have ever had. The dough was so thick (like empanadas) and there was also a strange after taste that I could not stomach; I could not even finish eating it. On top of that I ordered 6 patties in total, 5 beef and 1 chicken (1 beef and 1 chicken were for someone else), I received 4 chicken patties and 2 beef patties which was very upsetting because I am not a fan of chicken at all. This left me with just 1 beef patty and I had to throw away the other 3 chicken ones (my portion of the order) because the person I ordered for did not like the patties either and did not want to eat them. In addition, for whatever reason the smell was also unsavory. I cannot explain the distinct smell but it was not pleasant. Perhaps, we got a bad batch because I could not believe how bad these tasted and smelled. On the plus side, the customer service was great! The woman at the front who prepared my order was very kind. I would give 5 stars for the customer service I had but definitely 1 star for the patties. Maybe next time I will try one of their other dishes and have better luck because according to the majority of other reviews, they have good food. **Side note (attached picture): I did not receive the patty that way, I opened it up to make it easier to eat because the dough was that thick. What is shown in the picture is what I threw away in addition to what I said in my above review.**

Yelp
While the restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, it quickly went downhill from there. Seems very disorganized as to where you are supposed to stand and receive your order. I am very familiar with authentic manje Haitian and this is not it. We had incredibly dry griot and used poor cuts, pate kode both poul and ze that were under seasoned and cheap ingredients. Very disappointing.

Yelp
Worst service ever I have ordered since 11 o'clock and I arrive at the place at 12 o'clock almost 1 o'clock and they tell me that they don't have my order and can't differentiate the orders.

Yelp
Food was amazing! They are very friendly and accommodating. We ordered several take out dishes and it was plentiful. I would definitely recommend this place. Best restaurant in the area!

Yelp
I do, love Haitian Patty and I was very disappointed for $50 worth of Patty when I called the restaurant all she told me I didn't make the party she didn't call a manager she didn't give me an answer nothing that was really rude and she wasn't professional at all please just serve the right food

Yelp
Went to get some Patties, I was not even acknowledged. They took customers that came in after me and when I asked they said "he's a regular" . So I guess If you're not a regular customer you get cut and have to wait.

Yelp
Food is great. Out of the other Haitian restaurants their customer service is the best.
