Best Restaurants to Try While Visiting Wilmington, North Carolina - Eater Carolinas

"The folks behind the Live Eat Surf restaurant group operate five Baja-Cali-Mexican-style restaurants in the area, but Tower 7 is easily the most iconic. Located just steps from the sand in Wrightsville Beach, the restaurant offers a range of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and more. Customers can try the San Felipe tacos, filled with Dos Equis-battered fried cod and topped with salsa fresca, shaved cabbage, avocado, cotija cheese, and Ranch, or opt for the Tower 7 burrito, stuffed with black beans, Mexican rice, guacamole, salsa fresca, cheese, sour cream, and cilantro along with a choice of a variety of meats or veggies. Wash everything down with one of its many margarita varieties and head back out to the beach." - Matt Lardie

If you're staying nearby, you’ve got to stop in at least once! The tacos are solid, and the cocktails hit the spot. I tried the burrito for the first time — it could’ve used a bit more brightness or seasoning, but it was still satisfying overall. That said, we’ll definitely be back to explore more of the menu!

Absolutely phenomenal experience at Tower 7! The food was top-tier—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented—but what truly made this visit memorable was Jenna. She didn’t just serve; she curated the whole vibe of the place. From managing the atmosphere with warmth and attention to detail to handling the drink orders with care, her presence elevated the experience. What really stood out was her thoughtfulness—I didn’t have a phone charger, and without hesitation, she helped me out. That kind of genuine hospitality is rare and deeply appreciated. Jenna brings a calm, caring energy that ties the whole place together. 10/10 would return.

We always have a great time here. The Margaritas are always good and we usually get a pitcher! I almost always get the chicken fajita quesadilla and when we were there last week they were especially good. The chicken is always very tasty and juicy. You can really taste the chargrilled flavor. My friend always gets the Yucatan shrimp and she loves it! The restaurant is a little run down-but it's always clean. It's a beach restaurant 🤷🏼‍♀️ and it's literally a short walk from the beach(that's why I included a photo of the beach)and lots of people come in shorts, tank tops and flip flops. So if you're looking for "high end" atmosphere, go somewhere else. But if you want good food and drinks at a comfortable restaurant that's right off the beach this is your place!

Google
So disappointed. Last time I was here the place was stellar. This time the rice was under done. The tacos were okay. The service was pretty bad. Update, manger reached out to offer to make it right. Well done! I will give them another go next time we come through town.

Google
Tower 7 is hands down the best place for fresh food on the island. I’ve been coming here for years and have never once been disappointed. The fried mahi tacos are insane and one of my favorite meals of all time. Excellent margaritas, micheladas, and beer selection. Affordable prices but excellent food quality. Any reviews under 5 stars should be ignored.

Google
Loved our food. The chile relleno is by far the best one I’ve ever had. Our server was so helpful too. She pointed us in the right direction With all of our meals. Shoutout to Miss Devon.

Google
We got the large original carne asada enchilada. First of all, they don't have Mexican style rice anymore, just undercooked white rice. I'm not going to go into the details about how our order came out completely wrong the first time. When we finally got what we ordered the taste of the food was pretty terrible given the price. At least their refried beans were ok and I liked their prickly pear margarita. What a let down.

Google
Food was quite bad. My burrito came as pictured so I ate it as a bowl snd even then it was close to mediocre. The drinks are okay at best. We were seated promptly which is good. However, for being at such an amazing location, it’s a shame that the food is laughable.

Yelp
My favorite place in wilmington! Every time I come back to visit I have to go here. Everything from the margaritas, white queso, chips and salsa, quesadillas, + so much more has me coming back over and over again. I love that it's directly off the beach access and is the perfect lunch place when you need a break from the beach or even a nice casual dinner outing. It's perfect for groups of 4 people but if you want to go with a larger group I recommend trying to go earlier to avoid a wait! Always friendly service and a great beach vibe!

Yelp
Great spot. I wish there was music in the actual bar area, it was a bigger area but it was darker and quiet, wasn't the side we wanted to sit on for lunch. It would be awesome if they took the front area vibe and ambiance and pulled it through to the back bar area. Food was good, good price. Skinny margarita was a little tart.

Yelp
Came here twice on our trip to Wrightsville beach. The food is really good, except the rice! Both times, it was dry and stale tasting. Everything else we got was GREAT! The veggie fajitas were fresh and perfectly grilled. The margaritas were tasty. The restaurant was comfortable and had a good vibe. The staff was very attentive to our needs which was nice because we had a toddler so needed quick service haha. My only complaint is that the first time we came, we split the veggie fajitas and added an extra side and extra tortillas. The second time we came the waitress said we could add on a share plate and both get sides and tortillas and save money--I wish the first time we came the waitress had offered this to us. Either way we returned and will be back on our next trip to Wrightsville Beach! Thank you for some delicious vegan food right in town!

Yelp
Every-time we come to Wilmington this is a must stop. Great to go or eat in. Have had damn near the whole menu. Apps are awesome.

Yelp
First time at Tower Seven Baja Mex. Great lunch and a yummy margarita while sitting at the bar. Casual place. Food: Salsa and chips, queso cheese appetizer, and a Carne asada taco. That taco was excellent! There were lots of flavors that made me want another one, but it would have been too much food. The salsa had a little kick. Perfect. And the queso dip was nice and creamy . I'm glad I found this place.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This place has amazing tacos and service. I had two citrus shrimp tacos, and the flavorful shrimp was overflowing. We sat outside on the patio, which had a nice simple, white ambiance.

Yelp
Tower 7 has gone downhill... the experience of authentic Baja Mexican food here in Wrightsville Beach has been something that I have always held close to my heart. The problem is, the food has lost quality, ESPECIALLY for takeout. An abhorrent price, for second-rate presentation. Time to hit the drawing board and figure out what has been lost. I miss the old Tower 7.

Yelp
Every time I visit the Wilmington area I have made sure to make a stop here for atleast drinks. This time my friends and I went for dinner and drinks and it was fabulous. We ordered spicy margs and queso to start and all were amazing. Love this place!

Yelp
Recommended by a friend. We arrived to a 30-45 min wait on a Friday night. Normally that wasn't too bad. But on this day, it was pouring rain. Place was packed and very limited space to stand and wait. Hostess told us we were next but then came back to say there was another group in front of us. Great... There were seats at the bar but if you have someone under 18, don't bother. Once we sat down, server brought us menus. We ordered queso dip with ground beef. It was spicy and yummy or we were really hungry. On our list: Pulled chicken enchiladas Steak soft tacos Ground beef hard tacos I was not fond of the pulled chicken. It was boiled chicken with sauce but it was bland. The texture was just off. The rice was very dry. I did like the touch of the fresh cut corn in it. The steak taco was seasoned and cooked well. Flavor was wonderful. The ground beef taco was just your average taco. It was good but nothing to rave about. I would def try this place again and maybe opt for something other than pulled chicken. Service was okay. We asked for napkins which she forgot. By then it was end of the night and I'm sure she was tired.

Yelp
If you are in Wrightsville Beach, you must go to this spot! I asked two of my friends who went to college in the area and they both had this restaurant as their number one recommendation. We took an Uber were immediately seated at the bar - we arrived around seven pm on a Monday. The bartenders were extremely attentive, and Service was super fast. They had great recommendations and the salsa was the star of the show. You must get the island tuna tacos, they were the best tacos I've ever had hands down. PS they are HUGE (see photos!) My partner got the tacos in a beach towel which were good, but nothing too special. We loved this place and will be back soon!

Yelp
The food was okay, margaritas were good but they also switched out a more expensive tequila without being requested and they misinterpreted an order bringing 2 dishes to one person. Food was okay, cute place but be overly clear about your order. The restaurant reached out after my review to make things right!

Yelp
It's been four years since my review, and honestly, they've lost a star. They're still good, but not like they used to be. The meals are now hit-or-miss. The chips at all of their locations drive me crazy in that they're not served warm! Their salsa is still good, and I like their black beans. I LOVE a good margarita, and while they have a large selection, they aren't consistent when making them. I can get two skinny versions, and each one tastes different, which is not how it should be. My biggest gripe about this place, though, is the layout. It is a horrible layout, and it could be so much better with just minor changes. Two of the tables are so close to one of the doors that it knocks against the table or the chair each time the door opens. And, please move the host stand near the front, so every single person doesn't have to walk through the restaurant, past the people eating, to get on the list. The service is consistently excellent, though! They do a great job hiring and training.

R C.

Yelp
Lol rudest bartender ever! Standing at bar waiting on a drink and was told just so know I'm not going to serve you because you don't have a seat at the bar. What happened to service!
google avatar

Hans E.

Yelp
I'm a local, and this place rocks, great food and great service. Head that way if you are on the island and want some food.
google avatar

Robin J.

Yelp
We had an awesome dinner! I was a little worried when I saw that they changed the name of the shrimp tacos. The tacos were just as awesome as ever, and the addition of avocado makes them even better. The salsa is yummy! The margaritas are the best! The service was great too! It's a chill beach bar type of place.
google avatar

Yelp
The chicken shredded chimichanga was excellent. The service was friendly and super fast. Highly recommend it.
google avatar

Caitlin S.

Yelp
The only downside to tower 7 is that they don't take reservations and they get really busy. We went with a group of 8 on a Friday so we knew it would be a while; took about an hour to get two tables of four. Our table ordered a few different margs and they were all good. The food came out quickly and everyone enjoyed it. The tacos are a good size - they come in a 6" tortilla.

Yelp
I love coming to Tower 7 and the sister restaurants in town. The Vegeta-bowl was really good and made for a colorful photo, it comes with a side of cilantro lime vinaigrette, it is a vegetarian dish! The Triple C had chicken, chorizo and cheese. It was delicious, they have the best shredded chicken! I also ordered a margarita, it was tasty. I would give the food 5 stars! The service on the other hand needed improvement. We did not get refills on drinks or salsa. We were there for lunch and it was decently busy. The servers were all standing around the host stand chatting. We ended our meal with a full container of chips and no drinks. I will return for the food and hope for better service.

Yelp
Every time I visit Wrightsville Beach I have to come to Tower 7. The food and service are always great!
google avatar

Aimee C.

Yelp
Worst Mexican / Latin food I've had in some time. The margarita was the best thing about this place. I guess I didn't have enough of them to be able to appreciate the place or the food.
google avatar

Ted H.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday hit the spot! Plus $4 Margaritas!! Service was fantastic. Music on point!!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Best Mahi Taco ever. Blue Tuna taco was really good too. The Margarita was spot on delicious. Had the queso with ground beef to start with the complimentary chips and salsa. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Tower 7 with a large group before and I must say I was a little afraid that it wasn't going to go smoothly with the crowds that I've always encountered there before. But luckily it was off season, the weekend after Flotilla so there weren't a million people there. We arrived at 6:00 to start standing in a line for a table, much to our surprise there was no line. We got the table and waited for the rest of our party and everything went smoothly, everyone found a parking space and it was great. Our food was super, our waitress was very attentive and the table drink lots of margaritas of all kinds and probably could have tried more. I would definitely go back again and go with a group.
google avatar

Gregory H.

Yelp
Stopped here with my bride during a stormy weekend. There was not much open, so choices were limited. Good choice to stop here. We quickly ordered drinks, and the Rico Suave was smooth, as expected. The shrimp tacos were very good as well. Great service. Ambiance is aged, woody and cool - I liked it. Confusing entrances. A sign was on one door saying to use the other entrance, but the sign on the other entrance stated it was for the bar only that dining should use the other entrance (the one with the sign on it that said to use the other entrance). We expect to be back next time we visit the area.

Leslie S.

Yelp
Chips were thin and salsa was very fresh for starters. Maybe a suggestion one bowl of salsa per person. Salad was very fresh and tasty and generous portion for the price. The bowl was delicious and a generous portion for the price. The quesadilla was delicious, but the portion was a little small for the price. The food was overall good and prices fair. The restaurant had a good atmosphere and was worth the wait!

Yelp
Being from Wilmington, I've been a loyal "Live Eat Surf" fan my entire life. K38 is usually my go to, but I am SO glad that I finally started going to Tower 7. I've avoided it mostly due to the hassle of trying to find parking at the beach. At any location, I always order the Vegeta-bowl with no shell and grilled chicken. The food at Tower 7 is always better than the other locations. I've never had a dish there that was constructed poorly.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
While this location has a good spot right near the beach the food has something to be desired. It's pretty bland, the salsa is just tomato sauce and the quality is so so. Definitely not worth the price and wait.

Hugh T.

Yelp
One star, maybe one and ahalf because the beer was cold. This is a crowded, noisy beach, bar with mediocre food and service. I had a ground beef and a chicken taco. The ground beef had a funky flavor, and was barely edible, and the chicken taco was not much better. The rice was dried out, as others have reported. Parking is a nightmare, and will make you go crazy. I'm highly suspicious of all these four and five star reviews. OMG.

Joanna O.

Yelp
Tower 7 has nothing Mexican about it. We ordered 2 fish bowls. When we got our fish bowls, the bowl was full of lettuce with "3" small mediocre pieces of "supposed" cod fish. After traveling 4 hours Tower 7 definitely disappointed us! Service was lousy, we were forgotten about and we had to flag down a waiter to ask for our check. We will not be going back to this establishment. 100% DO NOT recommend this establishment.
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
Great food and awful service. We went for an early dinner (in January) so they weren't super busy. The food came promptly, but our waitress spent more time behind the counter gossiping (which we could watch and hear) while our drinks remained empty. Might be best to get a to go order unless you want to see a group of 7 servers huddled behind the counter chatting. Another group had to go up to ask for their checks, but luckily we were able to flag ours down to avoid waiting further. The food is great quality and came out quickly. The guacamole was probably the best part!
google avatar

Max M.

Yelp
What a fun place with friends or family. Visited from out of town and was amazed at the friendliness, service and food. I sat at the bar, but thoroughly enjoyed watch friends and family gather. It was on a Sunday night too... I'd definitely go back!
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican spot! Nachos were EVERYTHING and I'm so happy I got the Shrimp tacos because they were absolutely delectable! Staff was courteous and friendly and prices were reasonable - A total GEM in Wrightsville Beach!
google avatar

Kat G.

Yelp
After a few yelp reviews we decided to check this place out. Looks closed but open, you wait outside and a staff member lets you in. Staff are wearing mask, I didn't see the tables tapped off but there weren't a lot of people inside. Tex Mex menu- I ordered the Yucatán quesadilla and a strawberry Margarita. I like they offer chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh and flavorful. Nice place to grab a quick bite and then walk it off at the beach.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Awesome!! Love love this chill beach place. It's tight l, but the service has always been quick and good. Food is great every time. Fresh and delicious. Very generous portions
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
Under construction. Looks scary outside but the food was fantastic. Can't remember my bartenders name but she was great!
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
Tower 7 always hits the spot! Their queso is yummy and always warm, their drinks are tasty, and the service is fast!
google avatar

Kara M.

Yelp
We stopped in here pre-pandemic on Valentine's Day weekend. It was winter, so parking wasn't too bad, but I could see it being tricky in season. We arrived around 3 PM, the restaurant was fairly busy but we were able to get seated quickly. Lots of great Mexican staples on the menu. The drink menu was fun with lots of beachy beverages, we had margaritas mixed with sangria. I'd describe the drinks as average. Warm chips and queso were brought out quickly, they were tasty. Our meals came out in a timely fashion as well, food was good. Cute spot and I would definitely come back if I was in town.

Sergio C.

Yelp
Great salsa. Good hot sauce selection. I had a carne asada taco which had great flavor. I also had a chili rellano which was very good. I would come back! Wait staff was very attentive.
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in the beach. Great for lunch, dinner, or a snack and drink. You are not always able to order out on the weekends and you can not make a reservation. Worth the wait! I have had many items on the menu and they have all been good.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
I'm officially upgrading tower 7 to tower 8 after my experience. This restaurant couldn't be located in a better spot when accessing the beach. It truthfully gives that small town beach bar vibe once you walk in. The pitchers of beer are an absolute steal with all the refreshing options (choose wisely)! I decided on the fish burrito and it was great. It had a bunch of flavor at a great price point. I've never wanted to kick myself more until I saw the tuna tacos . From afar I think I found love in a hopeless place. Those looked like some of the best rare tuna tacos I've seen in years. The pineapple jalapeño Margarita was the icing on the cake. Tower 7 gets my stamp of approval.

Jason C.

Yelp
Horrible service, wait for 2 hours when told 40 minutes Ridiculous. Food was one star too...just horrible
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This place is much better than the outside leads on. Go inside and give it a try! The bar area is cool, food is pretty good, and they're generous with the chips.

K S.

Yelp
Definitely not Baja Mexican food. We had the tacos and it was all bland. The rice that accompanied the meal was so undercooked I was afraid I would break a tooth. Wish I had ordered a beer as the Sangria was sour with no fruit flavor. I felt like I was interrupting the wait staff service from checking their phone when we wanted to order.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch the other day and once I walked in I loved the vibe. Very cool bar section and quaint set up. From the outside you'd never know. I had the carne asada quesadillas. They were very good with a nice kick of jalapeños. Washed down with a few Tecates. Nice Worth stopping by.

Justin C.

Yelp
Perfect way to end a beach day. Cold drinks and great tacos. Looks and feels aged but for a spot right on the beach it's worth ignoring!
google avatar

Dani N.

Yelp
They have their own tequila menu! 'Nuff said? I've been on the search for authentic, affordable Mexican food since moving to the Carolina coast. Though nothing is what I'm accustomed to, Tower 7 does a pretty good job in its own way. Their salsa is fresh and mild and the chip basket is never ending. They have tons of options on the drink menus and a pretty standard food menu with something for everyone. So far I've had the tostada salad and veggie burrito! The tostada is for sure the best bang for your buck - $6 for a large salad with tons of guac (free of extra charge), sour cream, beans, salsa, cilantro and cheese! It may sound basic but the simple flavor combo is delicious and totally filling, especially after that basket of chips. They have meat topping options for additional charge, as well. Tower 7 has a Daily Deal from Sunday to Thursday starting at 5pm. Check their social and/or website to see what the up to date deals are. I've heard great things about the Taco Tuesday $2 hard shell and $3 soft shell tacos + $1 PBRs. Can't argue with that! Parking is confusing.. tourists, you'll probably have to pay a meter unless you come in the Winter. It is located right across from the main entrance to Wrightsville Beach. Great place to grab a marg and head out for a surf!

Mark R.

Yelp
Fresh, Tasty Food. Great Drinks. Great Service. Chill Ambiance. This place is awesome!

Bruce B.

Yelp
Arrived after the kitchen had just closed but the manager was super-sweet and let me put in an order. Food is FANTASTIC!!! 3 Tacos (shrimp, chicken, beef) were all awesome and the salsa is so good and really fresh. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! 6 Stars if I could. Don't miss it!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Tea is amazing! great server! Very smart and knows the menu thoroughly. She has a great personality and made our dining experience wonderful!
google avatar

Ananya V.

Yelp
You have to stop by here if you're heading to the beach! They have the cheapest drinks, best food, and a great ambiance. The inside of the restaurant looks like a little Tiki hut. We received this restaurant recommendation from a local and he said the place was usually busy. They were right so I would call ahead and check on the wait beforehand. They have $13 beer pitchers which is an unbelievable price. The Jalapeño margarita was delicious along with the veggie toasted. All the food was so delicious and affordable. I plan on stopping back here every time I come to the beach.
