Tower House

The man on reception was friendly and helpful, allowing us to check in early. I really liked this quirky hotel, from it's wooden beams to it's beautifully tiled Victorian bathrooms. The rooms are spacious, very comfortable and had everything we needed. The complimentary hot chocolate went down very well. The rooms are well furnished with nice wooden furniture and artistic lamps. The location is perfect for visiting central Oxford, you are in the middle of it all. Perfect for graduations at the Sheldonian Theatre, which is a very short walk away. If you are a tall person, you might not like it here, but for everyone else if you want a very comfortable, slightly quirky old fashioned hotel in a perfect location look no further.

We thoroughly loved our stay in this accommodation! We stayed in the Bastion Room and found it to be clean and spacious. While the hotel staff does not seem to be on site at all times, they were easily accessible by phone and responded quickly to my questions by email before our trip. When we did see them in person, they were very friendly and welcoming. Staying in a 400 year old building within a city wall was such a unique experience that I would recommend.

Probably wouldn't recommend. Not really a hotel, more like a guest house/Airbnb type of setup. Looks nice in photos but was not the cleanest. Room not cleaned daily, and bathroom was pretty ropey. Shared bathroom feels like it shouldn't be a problem, but in reality it's 1x toilet between 4+ people, so not ideal. Rooms were tiny and would be no good for taller people, but also had no air flow (bad smell) and no reliable heating (just a fan heater) - difficult to dry wet clothes/shoes from rain. ||Pros: location is great. Check in/out were very easy.

As soon we went into the room we were overcome by the stink of smoke and it had cigarette ash all over the bed, the sheets appeared as though they had not been changed since it was last in use. Clearly the room had not been cleaned in a long while as it was so dirty. The wall with the window was extremely dirty and damp. Their picture on the website is not the room you get. We went down to reception and told him we will not be staying the night, he made an excuse about someone was only smoking in the hallway and landing. We knew this was not true as the smokey smell was worse in the bedroom and there was cigarette ash on the bed. The receptionist said we would get a refund through booking.com, on which is where I found the room, they say that it was a partner company and the owner will refund it. Booking.com clearly had a no smoking room on their website, surely they are also responsible and if not why on earth would they allow a room of this standard to be advertised on their websile, surely someone must check them out first.

The Tower House is very well located in the heart of Oxford, just a few minutes to shops, restaurants, pubs and the city attractions.||Rooms are spacious, clean and have character. Service is good, and staff very friendly.||I’ll visit again.

We spent one night here in order to extend our stay in Oxford. If you like museums and historical sites, there's lots to do here, so I'd recommend two days. This hotel is built partly in what was once the city walls, so portions of it are over 400 years old. We were looking for something with that kind of ambiance. The downside is that many rooms have very low headroom, and you may have to climb a narrow staircase to access them. We fortunately sorted that out in advance by emailing the managment and requesting a room with decent height on the first floor. The management, I might add, was very good about replying to our emails promptly. Our room (wish I had remembered the name, but it's the one with the queen bed featured on the website's opening page) was roomy and airy. Our private bathroom (not all rooms have en suite bathrooms, so be sure you know what you're getting) was small but not cramped, and the shower was modern and clean. We did hear some creaky floorboards above us when someone checked into the room above, but it wasn't enough to wake anyone up and, hey, that's part of the adventure of an ancient hotel like this one. The price I was offered in early July 2024 was better than anything else near central Oxford. I noticed in the reviews that many guests were directed to a breakfast at an establishment around the corner, but that was never mentioned to mel breakfast wasn't included in the cost of my room. Overall, we enjoyed out experience here. It helped make Oxford memorable!

Do not stay here. Cracked ceilings and walls - flaking to the touch, floor literally slanted at a 45 degree the house being old is not an excuse it is not livable. Mould covering windows and the stench of it too. Stay somewhere else - seriously. Location is good but just .. don't. Terrible smell in the room. Sink in the room on the carpet is weird. Trust me. Go elsewhere.

Our stay at the Tower house was lovely. Just recently newly aquired, there were changes taking place when we arrived none of which stopped our hostess Elizabetta from taking excellent care of us. The room was clean and quiet as was the shared bath. We went to the No1 restaurant for dinner as per Elizabetta's suggestion and recieved complementary aperitifs from the Tower House before an amazing meal. Breakfast was also included the next morning and the eggs benedict had a perfect sauce, not too heavy. We would definitely return.
