Best places to eat and drink on campus at Wayne State University in Midtown in Detroit | Eater Detroit

Keith McNally on the Restaurant That Changed His Life

"A worn cafeteria notable for a huge red neon sign and three large windows; its visible interior convinced the author and partners that the site would make an ideal restaurant space and led them to sign a lease for the location." - Keith McNally

Well I truly did not think that Towers Cafe could get worse…but somehow they managed to do so. This is my fifth semester of eating here and it is by far the worst one yet. I regret purchasing a meal plan. Not just the food, they changed the whole layout of the place and managed to make it more inconvenient considering the number of students who dine here. Only one drink station in the whole place actually works and has stacked cups. They took away the one in the extension, and a different one doesn’t have cups anymore. They took away the large salad bowls, and replaced them with little cereal bowls (but honestly considering how gross the salads are now I guess no one would want a big bowl anyways) The lettuce is sometimes decent, but most days it’s pretty brown and wilted even more so than last semester. At least I haven’t found a bug in my food yet but I have seen hair and bit of plastic in it. There used to be two soups to choose from daily and now there’s just one. The ice cream machine still isn’t running and I’m not sure if they ever plan to turn it back on, probably not. That being said, most of the staff in the cafeteria are polite and doing their best. I just think Sodexo was a downgrade

I know it's the cheapest food for the biggest amount of people, but it is honestly ridiculous. Like others have mentioned, unless you come at peak mealtime hours, there's not much for you. 10-11, 2-5, 8:30-11, it's ridiculous. Many of us are required to have meal plans but still end up cooking or getting food elsewhere because the hall is so underwhelming. This is not even to mention the staff and the service. The adult workers look like they hate being there and are frankly very rude sometimes. The students are always chatting, or on there phones. Personally, when I see someone who was just scrolling on their phone go and touch my food, I lose my appetite. There have also been times the staff has been too lazy to even do their job. There have been two times I've cane for omelettes in the morning and I've just been entirely ignored by the worker behind the counter. For a service we are required to pay $3,000+ a semester, this is absolutely unacceptable. Nobody expects the dining hall to be a 5 star experience, but it shouldn't be this laughably abysmal.

This Dining Hall is a complete disappointment. The adult staff are visibly annoyed and uninterested in doing their jobs 80% of the time, and the student staff seem more focused on chatting, chasing each other around, or being on their phones. To make matters worse, at least two of the managers even brings their kids to the dining hall, where they run around, scream, and eat food off the floor—completely unprofessional. The food situation is just as bad. During odd hours of the day, there’s nothing available. Between 10-11 AM, 2-5 PM, and 8:30-9:30 PM, you’re lucky to find anything other than pizza, fries, or maybe apples and bread. It’s unacceptable that a dining hall, which should consistently provide real meals for students, leaves us with no options after a long day of classes or work. For a service students pay for, this level of carelessness and lack of basic meal availability is truly ridiculous

would give 3.5. they’re really trying but it gets pretty old after eating there multiple times a week. anything made-to-order is your best bet, the halal station is usually pretty good (stirfry is the best monthly offering from there). the best though is the omelette station (was MWF mornings this semester), but they usually stop after 10am to get ready for lunch(can’t blame them). wish they were just a bit better about labeling food, i’ve had mislabeled “turkey” sausage a couple times that was pork. overall this isn’t as bad as ppl say in my opinion, n the adults(nonstudents)who work here are super super nice. p.s. the music here is usually pretty loud for my sensory ppl bring ur headphones oh and check the timings on the website bc that’ll really determine what kind of experience you’ll have (full din vs just pizza and sandwiches for example)

It was a buffet, six years ago; they had a great selection. I recommended the pizza burger; a burger with pizza spice used as either bun, red sauce already included. It's ok food, affordable. Self service. You have, using regular buns, got to try peanut butter on a burger, no other sauce, get your protein.
