"Responsible for school canteens in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, the town hall apologized after 14,000 children were served pre-packaged “industrial triangular sandwiches” — with tomatoes, bread and butter, a slice of watermelon, and an apple — when a four-day weekend disrupted regular meal deliveries. Outraged parents called the substitution scandalous, complained that promised “organic and local” tomatoes were actually Spanish, and accused the canteens of often serving food cooked days in advance and reheated on plastic trays.
